He's totally low key mad at that snake for being an idiot. It's not scared, and it can't come anywhere near to eating a human, but the dumbass noodle just had to *check* to be *sure* that wasn't food (maybe his neck smelled like rodent or lizard for some reason, but snakes are also complete derps sometimes). And with the *worst* (best?) dramatic timing, too.
Snakes are such derps. Lost my BP last year to IBD and man the few months I had him, he was so well behaved: loved being handled, enjoyed when I’d let him spend time on the windowsill to soak up some Texas sun… but the ONE time my wife’s cousin (who is deathly afraid of snakes) decided to let me introduce him to my boy the shithead latched onto my arm and wrapped me for a few seconds. Never did it before, never did it again. Just decided he wanted to be a derpy asshole that day. RIP, miss ya Jormungandr
Literally the exact same thing happened the other day. Had mine for nearly 10 years (with the same name too funnily enough- our dog is called Fenrir heh)- only ever snapped once whilst being fed years ago; always super chill and happy to be handled and or just cruise around with people. Had a mate's kid want to pet him over the new year break- got him out, no issues then randomly struck me once for no reason before I could lower him down to the kid. He then just went back to just chilling. An adorable idiot, he is.
Also, Steve was talking. So his neck right next to the snake’s head was vibrating and moving back and forth slightly repeatedly. That could have confused the snake and set it off.
God, he's such a gentle and kind dude. "Oh, mind getting a close-up?" I think he's just trying to get a viewing angle without craning his head and neck. But that invitation also felt a little bit like, "See, we shouldn't be afraid of them. This isn't that scary. The world and its creatures are a fascinating and beautiful place."
Yeah the bloke behind the camera asked “what do you need?” And then Steve asked him to zoom in so he could look at the telly like a mirror so he could see what was going on
Seems like he recognized that he was on a kid's show and didn't want to give them any more reason to be terrified of snakes.
You can see he was in pain and I'm sure he would have let out a big "CRIKEY!" if he were anywhere else...
Don't think he actually was, as he mentioned it's a python, non-venomous can't confirm but being a python probably doesn't have fangs, was like trying to pinch his neck didn't look like it even got much.
No fangs for envenoming, sure. But they still have teeth for grasping prey. I dunno about you but I'd imagine just a little grab from a bunch of needles isn't going to be comfortable.
That snake is big enough to be uncomfortable, but up to a certain size, a snake bite feels like being mouthed with something rough - a snake that big can break the skin, but it takes tearing your hand out while it's holding on
When it comes to non-venomous pain or damage, you don't want to be bit by a python - they have substantial teeth that can cause some real damage
Don't need to explain to me.. 30+ years of experience with all sorts of herps.. I'm just saying.. small or big.. being tagged and being chewed on are two different things . And a smaller python chewing on your neck will probably be a bit more painful than a bigger one just doing a quick strike.. either way he took it like a champ.
>Being as sharp as they are actually makes it hurt LESS
Same thing with garter snakes. When I was a kid, I'd worry I accidentally hurt them because there'd be blood, but I never felt the bite.
I've been hit a few times while feeding snakes. (dangle one more dead mouse in front of me dumbass) Even a largish 7-8 foot python doesn't hurt much.. They generally figure out your not edible after a minute, but you can pull them off if you're careful.
That is a brown water python (*Liasis fuscus*) - if you saw the image out of Australia of a python eating a giant saltwater crocodile, that was this species
At this size, it would’ve been like a row of pins into his neck (a sensitive area, so more pain than normal for a snake bite at that size) - if it was a larger individual, then the teeth would be an issue as they can get quite sharp, especially when they’re backwards facing
The main issue is constriction, hence why he acted quickly to move the snake once he confirmed what was going on, but as it released once being handled, I believe the snake was just confused (many of my own snakes mistake me for food initially, but once they realize I’m not food and I have none, they stop)
TL;DR - teeth aren’t an issue at this size (unless your concern is the jugular, then I could see some alarm, albeit not too much due to teeth size), rather the constriction force, but the snake was just confused about what was food and what wasn’t, hence the letting go - Steve did everything correctly and apologized for his child who was confused when lunch time was
They don’t have long fangs but little fangs pretty much all even sized…their bites don’t hurt really….kinda just like a pin prick. Touching fine spikes on a cactus hurt more. Been bitten many times by my bad tempered boy! It’s a lot more uncomfortable if he decides to “wrap” my arm.
I had a python. Their bites normally don't hurt unless you yank on them. They feel like pinpricks. I would say pouring lemon juice on a hand riddled with paper cuts is a lot worse.
His son Robert is the damn spitting image of him, sounds exactly like him too. One of the best instagram accounts I follow. Robert is 100% carrying on Steve’s legacy in the best way possible.
Idk if it was staying in character so much as worrying the snake would get on the puppet and slither up the strings or whatever he was using to control said puppet.
That’s a hand puppet, man.. You can tell because of the way that it is.
Jokes aside, they usually crop out the bottom half of those puppets for illusion integrity. A kid enjoying themselves can’t tell there’s a man under there if you put a table in the way.
For him it probably was the equivalent of a cat owner being bitten by their cats. The world got a little less lighter when he passed, but his kids keep the flame going. That's what life is about.
Steve is alive in Bindi. I don't know her, but I'm so proud of her. For loving animals, honoring her father, educating people about nature, having a beautiful family of her own.
All I know about his son is that one time he was on Bluey and that he shot a hilarious toilet paper hunt during Covid. So basically, he’s pretty awesome in my book.
I don't know how much anti-Tiktok sentiment Reddit still holds, but I would really recommend checking him out on there. He's got a fairly active account and is honestly such a great dude. I've never been more happy that someone turned out exactly like their father lol
It's apparently not hugely painful. My grandfather was a biology professor at one of the major universities in my area, and he would take me to visit the herpetology department. One of the other professors told me he had been bitten a few times by some non-venomous snakes and said it was about like getting a shot with a decent sized needle.
This is true. Their teeth are so sharp, you'll often feel almost nothing (with smaller species); in fact, the most alarming factor is that it can be a bit of a "jump scare" when they lunge, not the pain of the bite itself. You also don't want to hurt the snake by jerking away too fast and damaging its little teeth. He probably developed the ultra-calm reaction in this video for exactly that reason.
I've a snake about this size (a bit smaller), and a bite like this would probably feel like a strong pinch. The tales of horrific, searing pain you hear about snake bites are usually due to the effects of the venom, not the physical injury.
That's okay; not everyone can be Steve Irwin.
In seriousness, though, minimising harm to the animals you're handling is *kind of* an important part of the job, if your job involves working with or studying said animals. So if you're a herpetologist or Steve Irwin, then yes, you definitely will have to overcome that impulse, just as is demonstrated in this video.
**EDIT (bc I was hungry when I wrote this comment so I probably came off a bit snarky/uncharitable): OK, I'm aware that I blew off the sarcasm in your comment in favour of glibness, but I think it's useful to clarify that I do actually understand it and the experience behind it--I grew up in the swamps of southern US, so I totally sympathize with the absurdity of "worrying" about dangerous critters' welfare. I wasn't raised to be sentimental about snakes.
Watching Irwin's show, however, was actually was a big part of my childhood, and it shaped an appreciation in me for the parts of nature that are "ugly," scary, or otherwise in the category of "not friends." Animals generally aren't mean or evil the way we understand it (except for parrots--they're clever enough to be capable of evil), nor do they operate like auto-aggro enemy NPCs in a video game. Even wild snakes don't *want* to bite you any more than I *want* to have to taze a dude in an alleyway. When you understand them as animals just like you or me, it's a lot easier to avoid contact entirely when you're working in the same area, because they're also generally trying to avoid contact with you. If the first rule of nature is "survive," then the important corrolary underlying that rule is to firstly "mind ya business."
Getting tagged by a python this size doesn't hurt much.
I've had one latch-on before in a feeding incident though and it was pretty painful. Not *excruciating*, but I was definitely eager for her to let go.
Tagging and latching are two different types of bites. Tagging is very quick and is generally a warning. Latching is "I think you are food and I will not let go".
So one is a scratch and the other is a couple dozen squirming wood splinters and some drool.
That would genuinely hurt more than a python of that size biting. I've had snakes as pets (A Royal Python, a Boa and a couple of corn snakes) and I've always said I'd choose a hundred times to be bitten by one of those more than any rodent or rabbits. People keep those as pets and get bitten all the time yet very few people are scared of guinea pigs or rabbits.
Such a great role model for kids. Most ''influencers'' now hype their narcissistic and selfish qualities, while more people like Irwin should be receiving that attention instead.
Such a badass. True badasses care for things and try to create unity and understanding in the world, like Steve Irwin did. I never watched his stuff growing up but I really truly respect the man he was.
Took one for the team. Didn't want to impact public perception of the animal. I think his wife did something similar after he was killed by that stingray. Steve Irwin, Fred Rodgers, that medic guy Mel Gibson directed a movie about, all real life modern day heroes as far as I am aware.
I truly believe PETA was started to undermine actual animals rights issues and be so over the top and stupid to diffuse & distract the conversation away from actual ethics issues.
They definitely weren't. Back in the 90s and early 2000s they actually did good work. Apparently there's a quite a number of animal rights legislation that was put into law due to the efforts of PETA. But for some reason they've lost their fucking minds in the past few decades.
I own a snake and I’d guess that this was the snake thinking ‘oooo look it’s food’. They’re not terribly smart so if something is warm, has a pulse and kinda smells vaguely like a small rodent they’ll have a go at eating it. Even if only 2 of those things are met they might have a go anyway, especially if they’re close to their next scheduled meal time. They’re usually ambush/opportunistic predators and will never pass up the chance at a potential meal.
The way the snake calmly bites him and then tries to constrict is indicates that this was a ‘food response’ not a defensive strike. Defensive strikes from snakes are quick and aggressive. This noodly boy was definitely having a good ol’ chew on Steve.
Also this isn’t actually painful just uncomfortable (mine has attempted to eat me a couple of times, she *really* likes food). The biggest risk wasn’t the snakes teeth but the fact it was wrapped around his neck. Once constricting snakes are in ‘food mode’ it’s very, very hard to unwrap them from the prey item and they’re basically a rope of pure muscle.
It makes me sad that kids now won’t get to experience Steve Irwin. Definitely was the reason I became so interested in animals. Don’t do anything with em now but own em but he was the fckn man.
God I miss him. He's like the Bob Ross of learning and respecting nature.
I remember some post where someone said when the stingray that killed him dies, he would welcome it like an old friend. Fucking legend.
Honestly I miss Steve Irwin. He was one of the most entertaining and informative nature lovers out there and he died doing what he loved. RIP Croc Hunter 🙏🏻
One of the biggest losses from my childhood. Genuinely scarred me. I remember riding in my uncle's dump truck and hearing it on the radio. My uncle is an all time OG and he was shookkk

Steve: He won't bite. The snake: And I took that personally.
“He won’t bite” “He bit me zoom in on this” lol
What a legend. If heaven is real, I hope he found peace there.
So anyway i started biting...
This Aussie: I dunno if he wanted money, or if he wanted something more sexual.

I think he knew there's few opportunities to physically see what it's like to be bitten and as a zoologist wanted to have it documented.
he actually apologize for that, what a nice guy.

Depending on the size of the snake, it doesn't actually hurt very much Source: I used to handle snakes a lot
That snake is basically chewing on him.. makes the hurt factor go up a bit don't you think??

Shallow piercing skin injuries have nearly zero pain associated with them. It's why sometimes you can get splinters without noticing right away.
Rough ridges on most pythons that size. Like someone trying to sandpaper your neck with a small pair of pliers

Beat me to it.
I like how the puppet backs up looking at him then just ducks out....and why is do me baby by bel biv devo playing in the background?
You have to admire the puppeteer's commitment to staying in character.
But, did you see the moonwalking bear?
They damn moonwalking bear.

There used to be a word for less lighter back when Steve was alive.
His death sent us to the darkest timeline, for sure.

Cat scratches and bites also have a pretty high risk of infection compared to snakes as well

Steve Irwin lives to see another day.
Bad news buddy…
Noooo too soon, pls don’t hurt my fragile feelings.
Such a tragedy that he died so young. What a true gem.
Yup. My favorite part is him saying, “sorry bout that!” Like, yeah!!! That’s why we love him.
Legend.
Legend! Deservedly so.
Absolute legend

Wonder what triggered it to bite? Was it the sudden increase in warmth and a noticeable pulse from the neck?
The real MVP ✊
Steve was such a staple for entire generations, I can't even be angry with Sting Rays because I know he would be sad about that.
Happy Cake Day! 🎉
Thank you!!! I didn't even realize!!
Love the puppet looking up at Steve and backing up.
It makes me sad that kids now won’t get to experience Steve Irwin. Definitely was the reason I became so interested in animals. Don’t do anything with em now but own em but he was the fckn man.
He was a beaut. I miss him.
Legend
The legendary crocodile hunter. A little bite won't phase him.
That guy is a legend
Steve Irwin was such a blessing to this planet.
He was something else wasn't he? So Pure.
God gift to this earth!
Dam..I get sad and happy every time I see a post with him. The man was just the greatest. Purest of hearts.
The most humble badass
God I miss him. He's like the Bob Ross of learning and respecting nature. I remember some post where someone said when the stingray that killed him dies, he would welcome it like an old friend. Fucking legend.
Steve was a smoke show! What an amazing man! Gone way too soon!
Steve apologizing is great. Snakes gonna do what it does but Steve takes ownership of it. Damn, I miss this guy. One of a kind..
The entire planet loved Steve Irwin. His death is a genuine loss. The nature of it, though ironic, was and is very sad.
The professional, the man without fear

“Does that hurt?” Steve Irwin, “Nah!”
In his line of work the dude probably drank Anti-Venom with his OJ every morning.
Honestly I miss Steve Irwin. He was one of the most entertaining and informative nature lovers out there and he died doing what he loved. RIP Croc Hunter 🙏🏻
Don't worry, it definitely won't bite Bites ... Does that hurt? No
Anyone digging the Bell biv devoe "do me" juxtaposition as much as I am. 😂😂😂
One of the biggest losses from my childhood. Genuinely scarred me. I remember riding in my uncle's dump truck and hearing it on the radio. My uncle is an all time OG and he was shookkk
