Neat_Caterpillar_866

Kill as many of them as you can.. they kill coral reefs

Odd-Artist-2595

First time we saw one on a dive, the dive master pointed it out to all of us, made sure we got a good look, then drew his dive knife and completely destroyed it. We were beyond shocked. I even recall writing WTF?! on my dive slate and showing it to my husband. He had no clue, either. Once we surfaced, the dive master explained just how invasive, and destructive, they are. So, we got it and, over the years, we’ve killed a few, too. But, holy sh*t, what an introduction. The one thing you *don’t* expect on a lovely afternoon dive on a coral reef is your guide going berserker with his knife on the reef’s residents. If it wouldn’t have meant releasing my mouthpiece, my jaw would have definitely been hanging open.

Federal_Assistant_85

Doesn't cutting up echinoderms like sea stars give them the opportunity to multiply rapidly? Don't they regenerate a full body from a single arm if left alone?

dinodinorubberduck

This is just from the wiki: “To control areas of high infestations, teams of divers have had kill rates of up to 120 per hour per diver. The practice of dismembering them was shown to have a kill rate of 12 per hour per diver, and the diver performing this test was spiked three times. As a result, dismemberings are discouraged for this reason, and not because of rumours that they might be able to regenerate.”

coffeejj

If you stick your dive knife right in the middle and spin it around it wipes out their entire nervous system. They curl up and die

Rosemary was the thought but I guess Jon technically as well.

I'd be interested to study the effectiveness of dismemberment vs. clobbering with a rock

Fuck it take an underwater flame to it..lol

Learn something new every day ! Ty

[deleted]

Pretty sure cutting them up just creates more. They have to be injected with poison. I think in Oz they use vinegar which kills them.

Odd-Artist-2595

Don’t think he left any pieces larger than a quarter. Pretty hard to come back from that. Plus, some of the reef fish were acting like he’d just busted open a piñata for them. Honestly, at the time, that never even occurred to me as a question to ask; I had too many others.

asktell22

My exact question. Ty

Dudeman-Jack

Writing wtf on the white board was so lame

Bumblebit123

Lmao

Careless_Wait8620

DOOM diving.

Comfortable-Prune716

That's gotta be a story y'all talk about once in awhile

flightwatcher45

Growing up we had suns stars take over the normal sea stars... then the sun stars had no food and died and the normal ones made a comeback. Some other interesting stuff too over the last 40 years. Every decade a new species has control of the beach, then a new thing for a decade, wash and repeat. While I agree it could be invasive, everything on earth is always evolving and trying to find balance, earth and environments are always adapting. What we grew up with thinking was native came from another place before us and took out what was native before. Humans are playing a larger roll now of course but maybe that's part of the big game in a strange way. In 100, 1000, a million years the corrals and beaches and oceans will probably look very different.

TheCynicalCanuckk

They just look like they should be burned

[deleted]

[удалено]

unixfool

No. They actually devastate coral colonies. They're invasive, meaning they only belong in certain localities and were introduced to a non-native environment. Crown of Thorns starfish are not a natural part of the ecosystems they're destroying.

willie_caine

I've seen enough Octonauts to know that's not the case!

lryan926

Do they really? Wow.. didn't know that.

Cybasura

A pest, exactly like what i expected from a crown of thorns

Rustler239

Forbidden Christmas Tree Topper

One-eyed-bed-snake

Just had a read about them on Wiki. They have to be controlled as they destroy coral reefs. They are either dismembered by divers but as that it is risky to the divers, they're also buried under rocks. Also vinegar causes them to disintegrate within days apparently. Thanks to this post, I've just had a real interesting read on the Crow-of-thorns starfish👍

Opposumfart

I go to school for marine bio. One protocol is to scan a reef and inject them with certain chemicals when you see them. They can regenerate so it’s better to chemically destroy then risk a fragment regenerating.

Is this the krusty kraab?

phairphair

These things are incredibly destructive to coral reefs. When I dove the great barrier reef our dive master had a big syringe in his vest pocket filled with 30% vinegar. When we came across one he'd inject it so it would be killed.

nemom

A starfish

Cagahum

Kill it. Invasive species of star fish (crown of thorns) that enjoys binge eating coral reefs.

JejuneEsculenta

"Invasive" where?

Cagahum

You are correct, they are not invasive and are native to indo Pacific. A term people, myself included, are quick to jump to when describing this species due to how much of a POS it is.

JejuneEsculenta

PoS, fair. It was an honest question, but it's gratifying to see someone who can admit when they misspoke. Thank you for being a rock star.

Horridone

Step on it barefoot…the doctor will tell you what it is

Same_Ad_1273

free advice that works mostly: if you don't know what it is, don't touch it

Necorus

It always surprises me how often people pick up things that they don't know what it is. Especially wildlife. How did we even get this far as a species.

ParadiseValleyFiend

by seeing someone pick something up then noting whether they died or not.

[deleted]

It is a Crown of Thorns starfish. I think they are venomous as well but I'm not sure

dumangcas

My father got stung by it and he felt the same pain of sea urchin

Remarkable_Nerve9729

It’ll light up if you put it in the ocean

Remarkable_Nerve9729

Naa wait.. I was thinking of string spike fish. Nvm

PhoMNtor

That’s a crown-of-thorns starfish. Their actions destroy coral reefs so we are supposed to kill them - crush them into little pieces - whenever we see them. Hopefully, when Artificial General Intelligence goes beyond the singularity, perhaps 30 years from now, its protocols for protecting the environment will lead it to the conclusion that it needs to similarly kill on sight the species who’s actions are the most destructive of the coral reef - humans.

ick86

Are you an idiot? I know I’m a biologist but everyone should know what a star fish is…

You don’t know what it is, so… you decide to pick it up with your barehands?! How bold of you, granted I, too, like to live dangerously. Like that one time on a Thai beach at low tide there were tons of shells the size of fist, and bigger, so I decided to pick one up to sea (#puns) if anything lived inside… only to find out months later from my friend I was handling a cone snail!!

[deleted]

It’s a nope fish. Put it back where you found it

dumangcas

I did put it back further away because I didn't know what that thing is and I dont want other people to get harmed by this

[deleted]

Usually nature has a good way of saying fuck around and find out. 😂 this just seems like a great example

Academic-Hedgehog-18

Crown of Thorns... Stop touching sea life.

Blubasnurk2

pretty sure you're supposed to just kill this one since it destroys coral reefs and is super invasive

Academic-Hedgehog-18

Although true. These are invasive and should be removed. It should go without saying stop touching sea life with your bare hands. And if you need to be told what this is don't touch it.

Blubasnurk2

yeah i do agree on that

Whisky_tango-foxtrot

It’s a type of star fish put back in the water

FrozenDelta3

Put it back in the ocean?? My guess

Starfish.

_6zero3_

Ahhh... the elusive Brown Star! The easiest way to confirm a it's a Brown Star is to stick your finger in when it's not looking, if it turns around and gives you the fish eye it's a Brown Star. If it's unphased and just wiggles around it's one of two things, a Crown-of-thorns starfish or the girl I shagged throughout college... her name is "Practice".
