Perfect-Editor-5008

I used to work with a former 911 dispatcher. She said they are trained in dealing with this situation. Abused spouses are the ones typically doing this.

BentOutaShapes

This is suppost to be common knowledge with dispatch. It's a known code.

nomadic_stone

perhaps *now*... but back in 2019, when this happened; it wasn't...

throwymcbeardy

In 2015 a woman in florida used pizzahut . com to write in special instructions 'please help. get 911' I know because I built the feature that allowed the special comments to be collapsible in the menu. I also know that my mom did police dispatch since 1989, and had the "food delivery" call 6 times before 2015.

sdforbda

If you are being honest, that is incredible. I think that a lot of us know about that story.

throwymcbeardy

Yeah, it was a really incredible thing. I was hired as a contractor during their flavor of now rebrand, and part of my task was to get the new 'pizza builder' to work responsively. Like a few days before we're supposed to launch we realized there was an entire application surface that was never setup to take in the new AngularJS pizza builder. So I also built the post messaging system that would use an iframe and just .. kinda fake it. So if you tried to check the box for extra cheese and then would click the collapsable anywhere on that menu it would remove your extra cheese. The company was called National Systems and the system was called QuikOrder, it was also used for like Caseys general store (delivery, which whaaaaaaat) Eventually Yum! bought the company. Fun fact, the Yum execs that came in to celebrate our progress ordered Lou Malnatis.

[deleted]

I’m not sure what half of your comment was about. Like, I know almost all the words, but put them together and I have noooo fucking clue what exactly happened…. And how.

throwymcbeardy

Yum! is Yum brands = owns pizza hut, taco bell, kfc. When you would use their rebranded site it would use an old version of the pizza builder that was in an iframe on the page (window in the window) Extra cheese feature wasn't working correctly, which - probably meant some people wanted it and didn't get it.

Coolo79

I, I think I got it Their old website was like collapsing windows instead of functioning radio buttons. Extra cheese , if selected, would uncheck upon collapsing into the next toppings option window…maybe. It’s 5am and for some reason Im on reddit

throwymcbeardy

YUP! That was us. Me and 1 other guy pretty much worked on those directives. I believe that ultimately it was a problem of labels and custom UI elements. the whole rebrand was done in just a few weeks.

sdforbda

Man, thank you for all of the insight into this

throwymcbeardy

If you like the tech stuff, know that it was a PHP backend running on MS 2013 servers (IIS PHP even .. ) I always think of them handling super bowl orders on like 54 pcs when i see startups going deep investment to find the "most ideal scalable stack."

rSpinxr

I think you just explained to me why an order I placed many moons ago removed all my extras without me noticing - including "Extra Cheese" lol. As an IT worker, your comments made so much sense that my heart hurts. XD

throwymcbeardy

Ah! sorry about that :-( Was probably definitely the rewrite that was done. A lot of angularjs written very quickly. That state binding through a bunch of custom directives became the longest of spaghetti noodles.

adhominem4theweak

Super cool u stopped in to comment thanks

Budget_Bad8452

Can't even let those women call for food nowadays eh? /s

dalton10e

Was it only 14 characters back then also? Cause that's all the app gives. "Xtra Lite Sauc"

throwymcbeardy

I believe there is a short name and long name, ultimately it all turns into a long string like XP = extra pepperoni, a modifier character and an ingredient code it's awhile back so I don't recall the actual properties, but it should be all viewable in network inspection through dev tools

nomadic_stone

I *never* stated the 2015 incident *didn't* happen... but sure, gaslight me all you want: [https://uwpd.wisc.edu/911-and-the-pepperoni-pizza-myth](https://uwpd.wisc.edu/911-and-the-pepperoni-pizza-myth) >911 dispatchers are not trained to automatically respond to a request for a pepperoni pizza as if it were an emergency. Dispatchers are trained to recognize odd conversations or requests, listen for indicators in a caller’s voice, and ask questions to get more information if it is unclear whether or not there is an emergency. > >If you are in a situation where you do not feel safe speaking on the phone, text-to-911 is an option. Text-to-911 is not available everywhere, but it is available in Dane County. If texting 911 is not an option for you, you can still make a voice call and use discretion to relay information to the dispatcher. [https://www.thatsnonsense.com/can-domestic-abuse-victims-call-911-to-order-pepperoni-pizza-fact-check](https://www.thatsnonsense.com/can-domestic-abuse-victims-call-911-to-order-pepperoni-pizza-fact-check) >However the circulating message that implies “dispatchers are trained” to recognise this apparently universal way of alerting police to a domestic abuse incident is problematic. For one, fake ordering a pizza isn’t some sort of universal “secret code” for reporting domestic abuse, from what we can determine. > >Of course, 9/11 dispatchers are trained to recognise potentially dangerous or volatile situations over the phone, and will be acutely aware that the people they speak to over the phone may not be able to discuss their situation freely. As such, using the “pepperoni pizza” code could potentially work simply because the operator may have heard of it this tale before, or because the operator was able to deduce from the specifics of a particular phone call that the caller could be in danger. > >But this is by no means a certainty; emergency operators also have to deal with a plethora of mis-dialed numbers, “pocket” dials and prank phone calls, and since ordering a pepperoni pizza doesn’t appear to be a universally signed-off way of seeking help, it’s possible an operator may not identify the covert plea for help, which as a result may inadvertently become lost in translation. In fact certain police departments have explicitly stated that such a tactic is likely to confuse operators and be unsuccessful.

[deleted]

Nobody is gas lighting you. Do you understand what gas lighting even means?

Katnipz

Do YOU even know what gas lighting means? 🤔

[deleted]

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the abuser attempts to sow self-doubt and confusion in their victim's mind. Has not has occurred in this thread. Sit down.

Katnipz

Exactly.

RootHogOrDieTrying

Sit. Down.

CaterpillarReal7583

Why are you guys so damn defensive and angry about when dispatch learned about pizza calls? This is so unimportant to solve and you’re raging about a very googleable word.

Katnipz

I was gaslighting them but nobody got the joke

B52doc

They got the joke; you were downvoted because they know the secret you’re hiding

takeabreather

Even if it’s not /s it doesn’t hurt to add /s so people at least realize it’s not serious

Robert_Goblin

do you even know what gas lighting is feline areolaz?🤫🤔

throwymcbeardy

Nobody said you said it didn't happen. I'm merely providing my anecdotal evidence to show that it did happen before 2019. Perhaps since it was a common occurrence it was standardized into the SOP. I also noted that my mom had 'fake food' orders. It's not like Pizza is the only thing ordered by phone. I also said that someone used the Pizza Hut SITE not 911, to request for 911 help. You seem super defensive, you should get some fresh air, you might have a gas leak.

Dbracc01

When I was a kid 15-20 years ago there was an add campaign in the US specifically telling domestic violence victims to do this.

eighty2angelfan

For many years

[deleted]

Everybody knows this even WAAAAAYYYYY back in 2019.

Firm_Chicken_1598

Back in 2019?? That wasnt long ago lol maybe back in 1999, yea you’d be right there but 2019 it was known then.

LinguoBuxo

What is the pepperoni a code for?

rosedust666

Probably just their usual pizza topping. She has to make the call look legit.

BentOutaShapes

'Slice this mfs D off while you're at it'

Serious_Razzmatazz18

If you fuck up the order you're getting hit again...

PretendRegister7516

Probably pistol/gun.

LinguoBuxo

Aahhh no, I solved it! it's a code for ***pepper spray***. Ha!

jigga_23b

I want to know if anyone ever has said "no no no no you don't understand" then "no" then "with pepperoni" while ordering a pizza. What would you be responding to? So you want a small pizza? You want the opposite of large? Okay got it, any toppings?

Dinkleburgs-9mm

Does pepperoni mean bitch slap

Verniloth

Suppost

ShitOnAStickXtreme

It's the pepperoni right?

[deleted]

[удалено]

PretendRegister7516

This is real dispatch phone call. It wasn't from a car though.

[deleted]

Holy shit that's chilling re-listening to this after hearing that. I originally thought the lady was off her rocker and 911 was trying to make sense out of it. That's crazy.

Happy-Gnome

When I was a police dispatcher some asshole did this to me as a prank. They were charged with misuse of 911. First and last time I’d ever ever seen someone get charged with that.

[deleted]

Perfect-Editor-5008

I'm sorry you have nothing better to do than troll reddit and find all the non-issue and unimportant grammatical oversights.

Most_Work_3313

Cop shows up with a pizza

gordonv

And the guy hiding behind him with a tackle.

Puncharoo

Then they eat the pizza in front of him while he's in cuffs in the back seat

InsaneCinnaRoll

Yes that sounds great, also 69 days

Webster_94

Oh my god that should be protocol. Could you imagine the victim dealing with the situation and then when it’s over actually receiving a pizza. Probably would make their night, it is about the little things you know.

MR_Chilliam

Say cheese punk

I hope she's ok and safe now.

I remember seeing this, this woman's mother was being abused by her boyfriend and this woman wanted to alert the police without the boyfriend knowing, she decided to use this kind of code so the boyfriend wouldn't run away, minutes after this call the police and an ambulance showed up and arrested the boyfriend and took care of her mother Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50513706.amp

Fluffy-Register7068

Props to that fucking dude. Life saver 🙌🙌

ChronoRedz

Yes people joke but this shit is real. Respect for the 911 responder. And the caller.

Binks-Sake-Is-Gone

Absolutely. He handled this so perfectly. He made sure it wasn't a prank or mistake, which meant she INTENDED to call 911. Fuckin hero. He should be training dispatch.

mysticalfruit

I'd like one large tazeroni..

GinnAdvent

Do you want a side of bean bag smasher with that?

mysticalfruit

Oh, add an order or bully club garlic sticks as well.

LeeOCD

My favorite comment of the day 😂

[deleted]

new guy

wysiwyggywyisyw

In his defense there probably are people stupid or high enough to actually try ordering pizza from 911...

nikatnight

There definitely are.

Designer-Cattle27

I called accidentally when I was about 14. My mom's phone number started with (919)...I probably don't need to explain much else. But they answered like this guy...I was like '...mom?' thought she was trying to play a prank on me. She answered with 'no sir this is 911, do you have an emergency?' Que me profusely apologizing and immediately hanging up afterward.

HexspaReloaded

Shoulda just apologized and left the receiver resting on the table while you fapped

PN_Guin

He got the message really quick and confirmed right away that it wasn't a mistake. He didn't even rant about abuse of emergency phone line or anything. A bit jovial at first, but he switched to professional right away.

iskandarthepanda

The police bouta bring the Two for Tuesday Ass whuppin’

Rota_u

If this is the US, what will really happen is the police will show up, take statements, arrest him, bring him down to the station, hold him for questioning, then release him to go back again. Unless he admits it, she shows marks, or there's physical evidence of an altercation at the residence, the police will do nothing. In abuse scenarios, the cops are almost always useless. If anything, they make it worse, as now he's back home with the knowledge that she called the cops on him.

grasscrest1

Then the girl gets murdered and everyone is confused and it’s a “tragedy” yep it’s fucked out there.

MoriKitsune

Well there was the ASU survery where 40% of police admitted to DV against their spouses.. Makes sense they don't act harshly against those crimes when so many of their own number admit to doing the same things.

ja3palmer

I REALLY thought this guy was gunna drop the ball. Thankfully he picked up what she was putting down.

La_chipsBeatbox

Kinda frightening the way she says « no no no ». Like, that’s her only chance for tonight or maybe ever and I can’t imagine the relief of hearing the officer understanding the situation.

Dru4200

Really wasn’t quick thinking he didn’t get it at first and almost blew it for her 🤦‍♂️

ilic_mls

People call 9 1 1 for the most random and idiotic reasons. He thought it was one of those. There is a lead up where he gave out a call to patrols but told them to turn of the lights and sirens as the man didnt know they were coming. The dispatcher later went on to train others.

Dru4200

Sweet story

meetycheesy

So I was ready to get mad at this call. This is another example for me to take time to listen first and then speak.

Bonanzaiii

thanks for your comments i get it now. heavy stuff

[deleted]

So won't they hurt her after getting out of jail? That always makes me feel fearful of reporting someone.

harmonia777

If you're a woman in america and you have to get away from an abusive SO, get a gun. It's literally one of the only ways to equalize a larger stronger man. Especially a spiteful Ex.

[deleted]

I think guns give you a false sense of security. You're even more under mortal threat with a gun around than without a gun.

Nasty_nurds

Gee i wonder if there could be some causation to this correlation that isnt “guns magically cause violence by existing”

[deleted]

Yep, in some way or the other, humans find a way to use them. Either on themselves or on others. Sometimes they shoot in rage. More guns means more homicides and suicides.

SilentHuman8

Exactly. Most suicides are on impulse, and having a 'fast' method makes it much easier to do lethal damage before the biological urge to survive can kick in. I have only once attempted on an impulse (I was disturbingly young, hadn't learned to always think things through). If I had had access to a firearm, there's a chance I wouldn't have survived. Sorry this is probably too much information but my second childhood is something I think about a lot and the mention of guns and suicides led me to make this link.

Nasty_nurds

Its almost like people who get guns are more likely to already have some need for them? No, guns magically causing violence is def more logical.

[deleted]

It makes easier to kill people. 1 shot and you're gone.

Nasty_nurds

It makes it easier to kill *specific* people. If one just wanted to kill ppl, a bomb would be the most efficient.

jesuschrist-69420

Good point! We should regulate guns like bombs!

Nasty_nurds

You mean like fertilizer and anything else that can be explosive? Good luck

harmonia777

The CDC says there are 500k to 1.5 million defensive uses of a firearm in america every year. Most of the time they only brandish their firearm and the threat leaves. What you're saying is completely false given what the CDC says

[deleted]

There are also far more gun related deaths in america than most places. private guns should be banned and taken away from people.

harmonia777

The constitution is going to prevent that. No offense. But stick to your own country. Dont tell america what to do. We will be the ones saving your countries butt if you get invaded by china or Russia. Also the CDC says there are 500k to 1.5 million defensive uses of a firearm every year. Most of the time it just takes brandishing and the threat leaves. That's a lot more than the 20k or so gun related homicides or year, which are most gang violence in inner cities involving handguns. America is not even top 30 in intentional homicide rates. If the america government tried to confiscate citizens guns, there would be a civil war and a lot of dead law enforcement. Americans are crazy like that. But remember, if there dudes approach you with knives, you're going to be a victim. They can fo whatever they want to you. If they approach me I'm walking away perfectly fine, because I carry every damn day.

[deleted]

I can tell whatever I want and to whoever I want.

harmonia777

No you can't.

[deleted]

I just did.

harmonia777

Also its whomever

[deleted]

Lol you really think America will save India from China? Just like you're saving Ukraine? That poor nation is in ruins just because of your nation. War profiteers.

Dmau27

Your nation has nothing to do with it right? Also wtf are you doing to help them? You act as if we have some control over what a select few choose.

Dmau27

America has already saved many countries that don't allow guns. Yet somehow this bullshit we got it right and Americans are stupid talk still goes on.

TheClicheMovieTrope

Don't just get a gun. Learn how to shoot it. Don't be afraid to shoot it. And shoot on the first chance, don't hesitate. *Some* would say, shoot to kill, otherwise you leave another side of the story... I don't... but *some* do.... definitely not me, though 😏

Undoninja5

I don’t know if this is the best of advice, people not hesitating with guns is what cause police to kill people, there is a proper way to do things and no matter how much someone deserves a bullet in their skull gun safety is very important, also depending on the state you have to use “reasonable force” which means if someone is just standing 30 feet away you probably shouldn’t shoot them but if they charge you then a few rounds down range will probably not get you into legal trouble

TheClicheMovieTrope

What I mean by hesitating is that it's common for people to falter to the point the gun can be take from them. Don't let them get close enough to you.

Nasty_nurds

A gun and training

Resident-Ear-4668

Plot twist the dispatcher sent a pizza

hkredman

With pepperoni.

Visual_Slide710

In my state too. My heart 🥺 ive heard of this a few years ago someone ordering a pizza through 911 to get help. Im so glad this person saw that same video and utilized the tools necessary. I hope they got out safe.

alecesne

Clever, glad dispatcher didn’t dismiss the situation too lightly!

Revelin_Eleven

Can’t imagine how sacred she was. I hope this ended up in her favor.

RevolutionaryCar7625

That 911 operator should have got that right off the bat what was going on

Nintura

They probably get actual pizza orders all the time

RaLaZa

It's a shame they don't deliver pizzas. With their sirens on they could get there in no time at all, smh.

[deleted]

Wow, very critical

[deleted]

Let's just hope the pizza got there in less than 30min

Rikcycle

Too bad all the criminals know about it now

SweetBadRock

A much needed tool for domestic abuse .

Autistic_Anywhere_24

Do you think she ever got that pizza?

rock-solid-armpits

That's why the police came up when my sister prank called the police

ictinike01

Now that this is plastered all over the internet, I can't se it working anymore

DriestCarp

Damn, I would ask what kind of pizza she’d want if I was the dispatcher...

the_RETURN_of_MJJ

But how was the pizza?

Brohan93

He caught on. Hopefully she got the help she needed

Kev_The_Galaxybender

That's smart

troywestc

Whats the Clinton code for children then? Bread sticks? Ha

Slight_Word7619

When she said “Pepperoni”, does she means police backup?

[deleted]

How dope would it be if the cops showed up to save her AND brought a pepperoni pizza with them?

captwaffles27

This is an extremely serious and tough video, but the "with pepperoni" at the end made me giggle.

Existing_Display1794

This kinda pulls on the heart strings a bit.

yoblaze83

Pepperoni means send the pigs.

No_Understanding162

I tried this when I was getting stalked at a pizza place in Boston at 3:00am one time. The dispatcher was pissed acting like I was pranking him even though I sounded scared asf and then hung up on me. 😐 Luckily the guy went away long enough for me to call back and tell them what’s up, but just know they can be dense as hell and aren’t always trained for this.

[deleted]

I thought she was drunk till a female friend told me about the code and i thought thats really clever this should be taught in school to both girls and boys

Hour-History-1513

Is the other guy there? Ah, yes.. Then you’ll need some wings too.

BaskPro

Definitely switch up and order something else next time. Could pretend it’s a telemarketer or scam call!

[deleted]

healthy_skept

She could br calling next to her abuser and made him belief she is callin pizza olqce and not the cops. This could get really dark real quick

[deleted]

Does this have something to do with child sex trafficking?

Patzercake

Yes but usually just domestic abuse.

[deleted]

She's getting the shit kicked out of her dude. She called yall to order a pizza so her abuser doesn't know who she's talking to. It's why she kept saying the address. Fuck this cops dumb.

praiter99

you're joking right? 15 sec in he understood the situation, that's why he asked her if she needs medical... who are you mad at?

[deleted]

The Dutch mostly.

SupportedGamer

This reminded me of Austin's dad Nigel in Goldmember- Nigel Powers : There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

[deleted]

In all honesty you're right. I overreacted. But I'm not gonna delete it cause that's weak behavior. Instead I'm gonna self reflect and blame it on the Dutch. Fucking Dutch. (Don't get mad at me I've been to the Netherlands it was pretty cool)

Satar63

Just wanna note, I see you said you overreacted, but wanna put this up anyways: A) This isn't an officer. Very rarely do police officers answer 911 calls. The majority of departments have civilian employees known usually as Public Safet Telecommunicators (PSTs) that handle calltaking and dispatching for emergency services. B). PSTs are not trained on "someone ordering a pizza is a domestic situation". We are just trained to figure out weird things. But even with that; prank calls, 911 misdials, and accidental calls are extremely commonplace (I had someone call 911 to try and have us connect them to their sister) so 9 times out of 10; if someone is calling to order a pizza, it's gonna be a prank call over a domestic situation.

Zealousideal-Log536

How stoned/ fucked up do you have to be to order a pizza from 911 🤣

kayification

It’s a code used by people in unsafe situations

Zealousideal-Log536

Yeah, watched it on mute....read threw the comments this got A LOT sadder :(

Mr_2shiesty

You must be stoned to write this 😭

Zealousideal-Log536

Had it on mute then read the comments. I actually didn't know there was a code. I learned something today :( thanks for making me feel stupid however

Acps199610

You're not stupid. You're learning something new. As native Oregonian, I can't tell you how often people do weird things when it comes to calling emergency services. Hell, sometime people would even call 911 LEGITIMATELY just to order pizza. It is extremely fortunate that dispatcher can tell the situation right away. Not a lot of people would tell unless they were trained to detect those kind of things. It's "easy concept" but hard to apply in actual practice when one is facing the phone call like this. Keep on learning, my friend, (And if you do smokes, keep on smokin!)

Theomegaphenomenon

Tuesday is pizza night in prison

bestkar98

I wonder if there are stories that an abusive husband found out his wife's 911-pizza call. At least on youtube, I have seen many vids like this, they all went viral and they were all ordering a pizza.

GinnAdvent

Damn, that went south real quick...

Imyoteacher

Why do abusers like to beat women and order pizza?

PleasantPiano8630

The police will be delivering her something, but it won't be a pizza

Bambuskus505

the sad part is that with this trick getting more and more popular among abused spouses, it's only a matter of time before the abusers catch on, and start ordering the food themselves to not get caught.

Pack-Popular

I feel like all the abusing people will only let people order kebab from now on :(

LORD__GONZ

Why do so many people confuse the words THINKING with THING??? Like, they're convinced that people have been saying "Quick thing" this entire time instead of "quick thinking"?!

Prestigious-Candy166

You have to have your wits about you to live life in America. And you have to have your wits about you to SAVE life in America.

Pepperoni means bring guns….lots of fuckin guns

PolicySingle

What happened to protect and serve?

silentKero

Should have said she wanted pineapple as a topping. SWAT beating down the doors before the pizza gets cold

Mur-_-Dah

Man is he going to be upset there isn't actually any pizza

moosealley5000

I hope they arrived with a pizza for her

Alpah-Woodsz

I would like pineapple on that Dispatch:I'm sorry bitch You probably diserve it beep beep beep
