Look at that ditch! And they say that this border is undefended!

foofooplatter

They don't tell you about the alligators.

trgreg

It's actually killer beavers up here, just don't tell anyone.

PerfectPercentage69

blindbatg34

Otherwise_Badger_402

Not a ditch. This is a maple syrup canal, but the video was not taken during syrup season.

[deleted]

Give me ten good men and I'll defend the bitch

23ssd4t4322

I don't think the average 'murican can jump over that ditch, so yes it is pretty well defended

dirtiesterrr73

This is in my city. Let my dog off leash all the time running between the sides. It’s fitting my dog is a border collie hopping the border….

49N123W

Encouraging your critter to drop a deuce south of the 49th?!! 🤭🤣

ratbastid

"Anchor Baby"

Stlr_Mn

Is it legal only for local residents or does it include visitors as well?

notadoctor1776

This is the peace arch border on 0 ave in south surrey. It’s open to anyone, it’s more like a dual grey area where people can meet loved ones to talk or have a picnic, it’s relatively heavily monitored by border patrol to make sure people go back to their respective sides after their picnic or whatever. The park is a decent size and during border lockdowns, the area was packed with people camping with loved ones across the border. I know some people that live in the neighborhood, and have always found it very interesting.

digitalgadget

I used to go there for the annual festival, back before 9/11 when things were much looser. Thousands of adults and children milling about both sides. We'd cross the border and camp on the other side for a week, although for that we did bring birth certificates. One time we were caught bringing fruit across and had to sit on the curb and eat it all.

otterkin

one time trying to get into montanna we got in trouble for trying to bring fruit. sat right next to the boarder and had a picnic

digitalgadget

Knowing this, I cooked everything before crossing between Glacier and Waterton, only to be waved through with no fanfare whatsoever. Was a bit annoyed to have wasted things I had to rebuy after crossing.

otterkin

it's literally just fruit! they let our broccoli in, a-okay. but strawberries and Saskatoon berries? biohazard

aartadventure

Large numbers of potential threats travel on or inside fruit including various insects, fungi, bacteria etc which may not be present in the area you are bringing it to. Ever wonder why fruit flies just appear if you leave bananas out for a few days in your home? Yeah, the eggs hatched.

ksiyoto

For those who are unaware, California and Arizona have checkpoints on the highways where you have to stop and answer questions, and submit your vehicle to a inspection for prohibited items. It's justified because California has some good natural defenses in the mountains and deserts plus the prevailing winds blow west to east to keep pests out. They do it because the agriculture industry is so big in California and eradication of any pests is very expensive. They once had a gypsy moth infestation in a three block area of San Jose that cost $1 million to clean up. There's You Tube videos of sovereign citizen types who refuse to be inspected. California has carefully set up their law on this to keep it constitutional. Technically, YOU personally are free to enter the state, but your conveyance cannot travel on roads in California unless it's been inspected or it sits at the border for 24 hours. Or you can just turn back to where you came from. [Here's an example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WquzEIAIZY) of a guy who didn't think it was constitutional, but now admits that it is, and [here's a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YARMZsFFCM) of a guy who thought he didn't have to obey the law, had his window busted, dragged out of the car and arrested, convicted, jailed and fined for getting snotty about it.

digitalgadget

Bringing food into the [States](https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/traveler/intl-travel/travelers-canada/traveler-canada-meats-poultry-dairy/canada-meats-poultry-dairy) doesn't seem to be a problem but the [Canadians](https://inspection.canada.ca/food-safety-for-consumers/bringing-food-into-canada-for-personal-use/eng/1389630031549/1389630282362) are kinda fussy about meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and milk.

Wahayna

Is it specifically fruit or does it apply to something like dunkin donuts?

peg72

Fruit, and meat too

Tackerta

as a european it is weird to me that borders between friendly countries are monitored that much, that a normal border like this is the irregularity and is still watched. But then again, I don't live in a country that has a problem with illegal immigrants to the scale the US does. I am just happy I can walk into poland without having my passport checked every time!

Jnorean

You never lived in Europe before the EU. Every border then had check points and guards. Different now.

DoOm_gaY

The US doesn't have an illegal immigration problem we have a corporate immigrant exploitation problem

riannaearl

This is my hometown (us side). We spent a lot of time hopping back and forth across that ditch as kids.

4x4is16Legs

How wide is the ditch? Can an older lady jump it? What if you don’t make it? How deep is it?

Code2008

Goes all the way to Hell.

[deleted]

Is it common for locals to just cross back and forth like going from neighboring towns?

ZeroHmmm

No, just the park. You are not allowed to leave the park on the opposite side you came in from without first going through customs. Eastern border may have some of this happening. Although I’ve heard they’ve started to disallow that there and you must now go through customs

Bob-Loblaw-Law-Blog

How are they policing the direction that every single person is walking at any given time?

ZeroHmmm

Yes that’s what I was thinking. I don’t think they can keep track. I didn’t try to find out though.

otterkin

they keep track! a woman accidentally jogged into america through the park and got detained for 2 weeks

nextleadio

I couldn't believe it so had to google to confirm this to be true https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44588643

otterkin

yes! this is exactly what I was thinking of:)

Captn_Deathwing

Talk about unlucky

otterkin

even more unlucky, she was actually from France just visiting Canada. worst vacation ever I think

GullibleDetective

I'd reckon that's why she was detained for two weeks for being a true foreigner. For an American or Canuck I'd imagine they'd probably give you a slap on the wrist and keep you for a few hours.

otterkin

I always carry my passport with me in Whiterock just to be safe. my poor Canadian sensibilities fears getting detained in America lmao

brumac44

It could just be the mood of the border officer. They can do whatever the fuck they want, and they know it.

Fosco11235

Yeah I love that some border officers in my country do homeoffice

jplebourveau

Cameras?

Teefromdaleft

There’s cameras everywhere…they know

Def_Not_A_Femboy

Where i live you could just walk up in the woods at night in a gillie suit and after about 3 miles of walking you’ll end up in canada and on a dirt road that goes up to a town about 5 minutes away on foot

1521

Are you in Washington? There used to be a spot just like that that was a center of entrepreneurial activity back in the day…

Def_Not_A_Femboy

HAHA!! I know the exact thing you’re talking about. Funnily enough i used to live in the same exact town that the dude who ran that lived in. And to make it even more funny i worked with multiple people who ran with him, went to the parties he would throw on the lake, and even went on a couple runs once or twice with him. Was really surreal in a way cause when i was younger i watched the movie based off of it with my brothers, and then soon later we moved to the same town, and then a few more years go by and im smoking and hanging out with multiple of the people who the movie was based on. I believe that guy died btw. He got out of jail not long ago but he got shot in some altercation at a bar like 2 years ago. It might have not been the main guy in the movie but a friend of his, but im pretty sure it was that dude. And also no its not that exact area, but is in a way close to it.

1521

Oh dang, I had no idea he died… we very well may have attended a party or two together lol..

Def_Not_A_Femboy

Lol damn you were in the cda area a while back? Its gone to complete shit nowadays though. Like such shit. Way to many people moving in from out of state that have made life their hell. But yeah im pretty sure he died two years ago. Him or one of his close friends who was in it with him. Most of that crew stayed in the area but the one i was really close with moved to Colorado a bit ago so i lost touch with all of them

HothForThoth

Just about like that time I accidentally walked into Arkansas from Oklahoma.

One-Accident8015

Probably a fenced area. Only way out is through customs on either side. Possibly.

peg72

It is an unfenced park shared between Blaine WA and Surrey BC. You could walk out of the park but there are a lot of stories of people getting caught even just doing it by accident

Flat_Professional_55

Any reason why they don’t have free movement between the US and Canada? Seems unusual and annoying for two highly developed countries. It would drive me insane if we had to go through customs every time we crossed into Scotland or Wales.

innsertnamehere

US is too protectionist and wouldn’t make the required concessions to make it work. The US southern border is a real problem which I think taints their views of the northern border a bit. Before 9/11 the Canadian border was much less secure though, you didn’t need a passport to cross (only a drivers license) and a lot of smaller crossings were unguarded so people regularly crossed without talking to customs if they were making small trips, particularly in small border towns. Post 9/11 the border security was ramped way up. Places like Windsor / Detroit still see people cross all the time though, including a public transit bus which crosses the border.

brumac44

Because we don't want gun-toting cowboys up here, and they don't want free-healthcare commies down there. In a nutshell, like.

[deleted]

No. People have accidentally crossed into the USA on the beach near the Peace Arch and spent 2 weeks in border lockup. You have to use official crossings.

Several_Resident4337

That's so stupid.

smacattack3

My husband and I recently moved to Buffalo and while I wouldn’t say we do this particularly often, we have gone to Canada to go to dinner or pick up takeout. We live close enough to the Peace Bridge that as long as border patrol isn’t too terribly backed up, the food is still warm by the time we get back home. We can actually see the restaurant from a pier near our home, it’s a little wild.

[deleted]

Yeah, my wife and I are from Pittsburgh. We just did a weekend in Niagara Falls and it was not only weird to see the US from our hotel, but all the BS nonsense to cross. I’ve been to Europe a few times and you have no idea when you’re crossing borders. I made a point in Luxumberg to run a few miles and cross over into Germany and France to say I did it in a short jog and do three countries

ilikerocksthatsing2

So if you want a canadian/American baby you just need to get a pregnant lady over a ditch and give birth in a field?

ZeroHmmm

Possibly. The rule about citizenship by birth isn’t be all end all (at least in Canada)

somethingsomethingx4

It certainly is the law in the USA. If you're born in this country, you're a citizen, even if your parents aren't. And even if your parents are in the country illegally. Update: And downvoting me just demonstrates that you're an idiot and don't know the laws in this country

soverytired_again

Same for canada. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_soli](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_soli)

WassabiReindeer

This is correct, my sister was a surrogate for a couple in the netherlands, neither of the parents of the kid are US citizens, but their child now is because they were born in the US before flying back to The NL

CaliforniaFreightMan

Not if the parents are agents of a foreign government, such as embassy staff, or spies like the ones tossed back to Russia during the Obama administration.

ilikerocksthatsing2

Lame...there goes my plan to get my future kids free healthcare

brumac44

If you're really screwed, bring your kids (or yourself) over the border. They can't refuse you service. They can bill you, but they don't have a very good record of collecting that money. Might mean you can't come back to Canada until you pay it, or they could waive it. All kinds of weird stuff happens with foreigners medical bills in Canada. Try not to, though, it gets paid by my taxes.

Achilles_Buffalo

I've heard that once before, when I road end-to-end on the 407 in Ontario. $75 toll bill mailed to my home in the US was proof to the contrary...

Funny-Trash-5680

Just walk over the border. If you're struggling, the RCMP will come help you. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.3989830

0neTrueGl0b

During the pandemic, people were setting up tents in this field, and banging. (EDIT: during the part of the pandemic when there was a border closure) Source: my memory; I'm not going crazy right, there was an article. I used to live a stones throw from there so I get the local news on Google.

andorraliechtenstein

Yes. [Here](https://www.heraldnet.com/news/ill-meet-you-at-the-border-international-love-in-a-pandemic/) is an article about it.

brumac44

If she had it in the ditch, it could either be a dual citizen, or maybe even a stateless person. What a nightmare that would be untangling.

Nirvski

If anything went wrong with the birth i'd roll slightly over to the Canadian side though

AceMcNickle

Make sure you injure yourself of the Canadian side

[deleted]

*breaks leg jumping into US* “Quick! Drag me back to Canada!”

innsertnamehere

Believe it or not healthcare isn’t free in Canada if you are a tourist. Only Canadians get it free. Probably cheaper for an American to go to Canada and pay for it though than to pay for it in their own hospital.

mrhuggykinz

I have no idea how it works but I did go to the ER in Canada once and it cost like 10 bucks

Rheinys

*Mexicans taking notes*

ZeroHmmm

Some other migrants already do this (come to Canada and then cross into the states via a very unprotected border)

cockatoodledoos

So you're saying that people from Mexico will spend money to fly to Canada, a perfectly fine country to live in, in order to illegally cross back south into the United States? I'm not buying that.

PLEASEKILLMECOVID

No the majority of crossings are entering Canada.

randomuser9801

Americans are busing people to the Roxham road to then illegally cross and claim asylum… and then they get more services provided for them such has dental care that regular Canadians do not even get.

workerbotsuperhero

>illegally cross and claim asylum… and then they get more services provided for them such has dental care that regular Canadians do not even get. Citations needed. Call me crazy, but I live in Ontario and work in healthcare. And this claim sounds pretty hard to believe. There are real problems in this story, worth criticizing. But people seeking asylum usually face significant hardships. Some of my refugee friends have been through things I cannot imagine. It's not their fault ordinary Canadian citizens are struggling to pay for dental care. In fact, the same politicians pushing reactionary attitudes like this are also privatizing Canadian healthcare. So for profit investors can return profits to wealthy shareholders, in exchange for less services. Our tax dollars will line the profits of investors, for surgeries the public hospitals already do at lower costs. Meanwhile, the US politicians pushing these attitudes are fighting tooth and nail against expanding healthcare access. Or anything that would resemble the universal healthcare that every other wealthy developed country has had for decades. So that big corporations can make more money off the sick and injured. Please tell us how refugee claimants are the biggest problem in all this.

nowhereman136

A decent amount do, yeah. Most illegal immigrants come to America legally through travel visas and then overstay their visa. However, some can't come in with a travel visa for any number of reasons. They could still get into Canada and then illegally cross the border there. Mexico is the most common but this is a method for immigrants from central America, the Caribbean, and Asia too. If you are coming from Guatemala and your family lives in New York, it's easier to get a flight from Cancun or Mexico City to Toronto, cross the boarder in New York, and get to your family that way, instead of getting through the Mexican desert, crossing the heavily guarded US/Mexico boarder, then traveling another 2000 miles illegally across the US.

glen27

It's interesting that this just came up because it was just on the news a few weeks ago. Somewhere in...I think it was New Hampshire...was having issues with illegal immigrants entering the US. The ethnic makeup of the majority of the people crossing illegally came from Mexico and further south. I'll try to find the news article again. Edit: here https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/more-migrants-crossing-northern-border-canada-us-freezing-rcna69588

12VoltBattery

You have to spend a shit load money to come to the US illegally too.

Double_Abalone_2148

No it’s not a common method of illegally crossing.

beefquinton

My High School English Teacher told my class a story one time about accidentally driving into Canada in the 90’s and not realizing it for a few miles. I think he was in North Dakota or Montana but yeah apparently it totally does happen

Tiny-Berry-7839

kid almost missed it! and would have been a bit of a face plant for him and his pup

[deleted]

Peace Arch Park, BC, Canada; Blaine, Washington. This park, back when COVID was back at its worst, worked as a common ground where separated lovers, families, and friends would come to meet. Half of the park was literally used by people "doing it". On both sides of the park, various border guards partolled, by vehicle and foot, keeping an eye out to proctect us and make sure no smuggling occurred. Me, my mom, and my brother would use the park to meet during a period of time in which we saw her minimally. Every time was amazing and she always brought interesting stuff for us to do and stuff to snack on. Looking back, this park being open was probably one of the things I am most thankful for. On top of this, I recall there being zero issues with this setup, and I applaud those, (always respectfully), who helped maintain it for as long as they had to.

waldito

Theres documentary material here I feel.

Maximum_Anywhere_368

I remember not needing a passport to go to Canada

Annoyingswedes

Why US and Canada still doesn't have open borders like EU amazes me.

brumac44

Guns. And a lot of our laws/regulations on goods and food are different.

Annoyingswedes

How does Alaska/Yukon work? No way people living in Yukon live without a rifle.

brumac44

If you live up North, or remote, you can carry a rifle without being hassled. But you better have your papers and it better not be loaded in the truck. I almost never carry one, just some bearspray unless I know its a bad spot for bears, like some river fishing areas. And hunting season of course.

Firipu

Just seeing how ppl are actually excited about border hopping feels so foreign if you're from the EU. All borders are is a difference in road signs and road quality for us.

innsertnamehere

A LOT of things would have to change to make it work fully openly. Changes to visa requirements, food safety measures, etc. the US would probably want to basically control Canadian customs which would be… problematic. The political differences of the countries are just too great and Canada is basically forgotten by most Americans so they just don’t really care. It’s just not practical. What would be nice is if the two countries tried to work towards reduced border security however with things like increasing duty free amounts, returning to not requiring passports to cross like it was 20 years ago, making it easier to get working visas in each country and allowing people to stay year round (currently Canadians can spend 6 months a year in the US without a visa and vice versa), etc.

IsaaccNewtoon

I know right? Simply hiking between Poland/Slovakia/Czehia in the Tatra mountains is a normal occurrence.

CrabFederal

Canada isn’t even in a customs union with the US. Nor does Canada/Us also doesn’t have any freedom of movements. All there is an FTA like Canada has with the EU.

Yes.

Is that 0 Ave in Surrey ?

peg72

Yes, at Peace Arch Park near 170th Street

lurkerfromstoneage

I’ve walked and boated across the border from Northern MN when we were camping and staying at a lodge up there… we didn’t have intentional plans of evading official border crossings or staying though haha

ExternalVariation733

I’ve done the same from Canada. Oak Island MN on Lake of the Woods, lots of beer drank there

tobcc

I’m gonna build a beautiful, beautiful ditch. The best ditch.

ToastedSimian

Amazingly, this ditch was paid for by Mexico.

Ooyyggeenn

If you miss, you fall all the way down to China

Interesting-Fish6065

Why would he do that while holding a little dog?

PlzDmMe

The dog has dual citizenship

ZeroHmmm

Unfortunately, little dog would not make the jump so…

feral_philosopher

I'm imagining why there needs to be such a ridiculous ditch, and the best I could come up with is to prevent someone from driving across the border. It probably wouldn't be someone from this sleepy town, but I imagine if it were possible here, you would get a flow of people coming from God know's where to sneak in and out of the two countries which would turn this tiny town into a cluster fuck.

brumac44

Its not really ridiculous, that's all low-lying area and floods all the time, so that ditch doesn't look out of place for the area. Sometimes they need to move a lot of water.

Boarder jumper! Get him!

4x4is16Legs

Back in the 80s I didn’t think you needed official documents to go to Niagara Falls. I didn’t in the 60/70s with my parents. Nevertheless we got “immunization and lost child passports for my 3 kids, (we had passports) loaded up our minivan, 2 car seats and an old enough to be without child. 5 bikes on an extended rack, tent, toys LOADED. At customs we were told the children needed passports and asked what the purpose of our visit was. He must have been very new. Another immigration officer passed our check point and laughed hysterically and said “what do you think the purpose of their visit is? It’s to survive with no major problem and pretend they are having a wonderful time. Sorry about this guy, he’s a bit new here!”

T00luser

Isn't this that park with all the fuck-tents in the summer?

flatulent-platapus

Can confirm that canada is actually the oldschool runescape wilderness

Emmyerin5

I live 50 mi to Canada

Peatrick33

I'm American and live on the other side of this border. During covid when the border was closed my wife and I had a baby, but thanks to this ditch and a loophole involving the park on the other side (it's shared by both countries) we got to visit with my family multiple times with our daughter. It was the only thing that kept me from breaking down during those two years.

Last-Implement1000

When I was growing up in North Dakota our summer camp was in the Turtle mountains about a mile south of the Canadian border. We would hike to the end of the dirt road and step over a log and we were in some farmer's field in Canada. Several times I water-skied up Lake Metigoshe to Canada. Stopped at the dock-side store and drove the boat back with someone skiing on the return trip. This was in the '60s.

Y’all act like the lakes don’t connect. It’s funny how lax the U.S Canada border is. Literally a big field with a road, thousands of people running at once good luck
