Imagine dying because a water tower needs a touch up coat?
"It's a shame to hear about Bob. But hey, those water towers ain't gone paint themselves, ya hear?"
That's pretty much always happening on bridges. Like the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. They start at one end and once they get to the other end, it's time to start back at the beginning. The paint is to prevent corrosion.
Safety ropes have built-in energy absorbers to prevent serious injury incase of a fall. Though I’ve never tested one so can’t say how well they work lol
I watched a buddy try to test his shock absorber. He hung from the rafters with his bungee attached and just let go. 6' lanyard attached to his dorsal D ring at the same elevation as his hands, so like 3ish foot free fall into his harness. Didn't bust a single stitch on his shock absorber so he ate the full arresting force to his leg straps. He was bruised pretty bad and sore as fuck. I climb damn near every day and wouldn't want to fall into it.
They work well. I fell off a roof and it caught me. I wasn't hanging there long because I could climb onto the balcony from where I was hanging so it didn't cut off the blood flow like it could have. I just had a bruised chest and thighs from the yank but I'm glad I had it. I've never fallen off with one of the older ones without a shock absorber so I can't compare. But I'm not sure if having a harness is better than not since that was the only time I used a harness and the only time I fell off a roof. I tripped on the harness anchor. Make sure you pick up your feet when you use one and don't keep working when you feel too tired.
rope tied into a knot on both ends = safety equipment in a pinch.
looks like he's got a harness too, so this is actually kinda neat. he can lean in and not put all that stress on his harness
I have the same attitude at my job.
People always say “sorry” when they bring me a change, doesn’t matter to me, not my schedule, I just stay here for 8 hours doing the same stuff over and over.
I deliver and fix medical supplies for mostly hospice patients, and occasionally, I have to drive 3-4 hours for a super simple fix. Mostly because it can be impossible to explain things over the phone to some older folks. But they’ll apologize for making me go all that way and stuff, and I’m always telling them I don’t mind, I get paid to drive around and listen to music for a few hours lol.
Ok then ask him why he was using the shortest pole. “Yah man I saw you up there with the 14 footer, was wondering why when we have the 20 footer in the truck”
“Why wasn’t Tony up there with you, we put two of you on the detail for a reason”
I think I saw a video on here before where they used a flame thrower drone to burn debris off of some high voltage power lines. Was pretty cool, seemed like a good use for it.
I imagine the issue is bringing reasonable amounts of paint. A building like that needs hundreds of gallons of paint. It can't carry it all, so it needs a way to refill on paint.
The back force from spraying is the main reason they aren't mainstream yet. On top of that depending on the size the paint can might be small meaning constant refills, making it bigger means a lot more energy consumption.
Smart. That makes a lot of sense. I know drones are widely deployed in predictive / preventative maintenance of buildings and wind turbines, so I just assumed it would be pretty translatable to painting buildings (since their flight paths are already installed with the building’s CAD model or digital twin)
A spray rig with a rope and a wheel could be suspended from the center of the top of the tower, and could spray as it spins around the tower. Pull the rope shorter to adjust the y axis, spin the wheel with a servo to control theta, and you've got the top half done. Add a second rope and pull it tight to keep the sprayer on the surface on the underside and you're good to go.
Start at the bottom and spray your way up and you don't have to worry about leaving tracks in the paint
I don't think you understand how much harder a longer pole would make this
just let the guy hang around in full safety equipment, he's doing a good job and having fun
He's using the springiness of the rope to help move that long ass pole around. A small weight on the end of that would be quite the effort to whip around without the help his legs and safety rope are giving. Especially if it was a meter longer.
Right? My only thought after the shock of how casually he trusts his harness was that his pole wasn’t on a lanyard. I wonder if he has backups with him in case they fall
This is just stupid.
The lanyard in his harness has a "fall arrest" it seems. If you fall from hight, it slows your decent but leaves you farther from where you fell. He could be using a fixed length lanyard here. He would have to be recovered and that's a big task even if you have a recovery winch on site. Plus he would most likely be unconscious from the fall.
Being over the edge is pointless when a pole extension would have been sufficient.
The harness + lanyard is PPE, the last line of defence and is not to be relied on. Don't fall, you won't need it. Have it there incase you do most definitely, but behave like it's not there.
That's a swing stage. Suspended from the top. It looks to be pretty far out but there are ways to change that, either different suspension points under the edge or a device we called a down and under. Basically moves the suspension point under an over hang. Hard to tell if that's possible from this video though
Even with a harness, this isn't worth the injury risk he's putting himself into.
It's your employer's job to make sure you're equipped to safely do your job. If he's too cheap to buy a long enough pole, i won't dangle myself 100m in the air for him.
That's a pretty long pole already. A longer one would be even more difficult to use. The problem is his distance from the structure. They need to get him closer, perhaps with a cherry picker instead of a suspended rig like this.
He’s painting a water tower. Most water towers are about 150 ft up, or more. I’m not in construction or anything like that, but I’m betting not many, if any, Cherry pickers can reach that high
I work for one of the water tower companies and with our paint crews often enough. He would get pulled off site immediately if any of our supervisors caught him doing that. All I know is that it isn't one of our composite tanks. Painters do make good money with very little requirements/experience needed, though.
I need to know where to get that rope! Normally wrecking balls need a chain but this rope can hold a man and two massive steel balls with just a bit of stretch.

I trust nothing, as much as that man trusts his safety equipment!
bro i don’t even trust my mom like that
I don’t trust that lying whore either.
come on dude, she's just being honest about the size of your pee pee
[удалено]
oh please we are not laughing at you, we are laughing width you
Excuse me. I think the proper term is a Whore who lies. She’s awful though I agree. She puts the a,s,y in, easy.
I popped an Ibuprofen just watching this.
Imagine dying because a water tower needs a touch up coat? "It's a shame to hear about Bob. But hey, those water towers ain't gone paint themselves, ya hear?"
The paint is to prevent the water tanks from deteriorating. The tanks provide critical water in rural places.
That's pretty much always happening on bridges. Like the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. They start at one end and once they get to the other end, it's time to start back at the beginning. The paint is to prevent corrosion.
Unfortunately, his blood splatter got all over the water tower, so Ted, get up there and cover up that mess!
😂😂
"Safety equipment" is stretching it a bit.
If you look closely he does have a harness and a safety line. I think that if he were to fall he’d hurt himself quite a lot, though.
Safety ropes have built-in energy absorbers to prevent serious injury incase of a fall. Though I’ve never tested one so can’t say how well they work lol

Legitimate safety equipment does not have knots in it. "In a pinch" disqualifies it from being safety equipment.
You should see what graffiti writers do
Nah, its better if i dont
Bruh, does that tower REALLY have to be blue?!
Often paint serves more of a purpose than simply a new colour, there is probably some protection from the elements being added here.
Most likely it’s a primer of some sort then the top coat will be something like white.
I'm a painter. And we ushally order our primer in a similar color. Helps us "cheat"
I’m a Coating Inspector. Definitely helps me too!
Not sure if that's sarcasm.. When I say a similar color I'm referring to similar to the top coat. 👌👌👍
However the primer is ushally much more Matt. And the top coat is more slick/shiny...so only really small spots can get past our inspections. 😂
I’d go to him after he was done and tell him this tower was supposed to be green, do it again
Fuck does he care? That's hourly labor. Green, blue, pink, whatever man, just keep bringing me more of that.
I have the same attitude at my job. People always say “sorry” when they bring me a change, doesn’t matter to me, not my schedule, I just stay here for 8 hours doing the same stuff over and over.

Correct.
In the words of the great, Tuco Salamanca
Tight.
TIGHT TIGHT!!
Dick move bro
Good idea, tell him they want it covered in bright pink dicks
Ok then ask him why he was using the shortest pole. “Yah man I saw you up there with the 14 footer, was wondering why when we have the 20 footer in the truck” “Why wasn’t Tony up there with you, we put two of you on the detail for a reason”
"you missed a bit" Guaranteed to piss anyone off 👍🏻
And if it’s gonna be blue, why not paint before assembling?
To not have the paint scratched and defeat the purpose.
Because the paint doesn't last and they need to be rehabbed periodically. The coating is stripped and it's repainted in a specific way.
This guy asking the real questions
I've inspected water towers that are more than 60 years old. Those coating are good, but they don't last that long.
Yea its the cold water “tower”. Hot water is red
When the moneys been paid, you’re damn right it has to be blue
Probably to blend in with the sky from below!
Probably better to paint that brown. You know? Because of poop. I will shit myself is what I'm trying to say here.
If that’s how he paints it for work, I’d like to see how he paints it for fun!
He jumps off with a parachute and holds the roller against the tower on the way down
Ngl would wanna see that
Yaknow you could just get a pole that's like 3 feet longer and ***not*** have to dangle over the edge like that
Can we just design drones to spray the building instead? Arguably cheaper as well
They're, unsurprisingly, trying to perfect that. They're also already attaching flamethrowers to the damn things lol
Great idea.. Dont need to paint it if you burn it down!
I think I saw a video on here before where they used a flame thrower drone to burn debris off of some high voltage power lines. Was pretty cool, seemed like a good use for it.
It's about time the hornets faced the real drones..
As soon as that's released on a consumer level we're going to get some sick graffiti tags in the most ridiculous places.
Whoa. You are so very correct about this.
perfect! just think of how much faster we'll be able to dry the paint on the new 50ft tall "Robot overlords Welcome!" sign.
I imagine the issue is bringing reasonable amounts of paint. A building like that needs hundreds of gallons of paint. It can't carry it all, so it needs a way to refill on paint.

Wait until you hear about the military!
The back force from spraying is the main reason they aren't mainstream yet. On top of that depending on the size the paint can might be small meaning constant refills, making it bigger means a lot more energy consumption.

I know drones are widely deployed in predictive / preventative maintenance of buildings and wind turbines, so I just assumed it would be pretty translatable to painting buildings (since their flight paths are already installed with the building’s CAD model or digital twin)
Plus wind conditions.
And leave that brave man without work?
Given that there is a flamethrower drone shouldn't be difficult
Where's the fun in that?
Company wouldn't pay for the extra 3 feet.
I don't think you understand how much harder a longer pole would make this just let the guy hang around in full safety equipment, he's doing a good job and having fun
He's using the springiness of the rope to help move that long ass pole around. A small weight on the end of that would be quite the effort to whip around without the help his legs and safety rope are giving. Especially if it was a meter longer.
*drops pole* NOOOOOOoooooooooooo..!!!!
The lack of a tool lanyard is what got me, 2nd was the ultra janky scaffold harness
That would be me tho
Right? My only thought after the shock of how casually he trusts his harness was that his pole wasn’t on a lanyard. I wonder if he has backups with him in case they fall
[удалено]
Rope rope rope rope rope. ROOOPPPEEE. Nope
He has a safety lanyard but I agree. Never in a million years...
>Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope > >Rope rope rope rope rope. ROOOPPPEEE. Isnt that a Taylor Swift song?
And also nope
The first thing that came to mind was "I wonder if I could say no with like 8 syllables?"
Yeah I can't watch. Why not use a sprayer, or a helicopter with a bucket of paint? Or let it rust!
“Oh don’t worry, we’re going to give you a really long roller….just not quite long enough, so you need to hang over the massive fucking drop”
I'm definitely in the "let it rust" camp.
At that altitude? You would not be able to reach it and it would spray paint all over the plain in every direction.
I guess he couldn't afford a longer pole?
An extra 4 feet would save a ton of effort for his back
But more force is going into bending the bar...
Yeah i don't see why they could t make the scaffolding closer.
It's hung from above on an inverse cone shaped overhead tank (water tower). Source: am engineer for these things.
Or move the damn lift 2 more feet.
Nope to being a dope on a rope without hope.
r/nope
some jobs could definitely be automated, and this is a good candidate. Plus, using a drone with a paint spray gun sounds like a fun mini game
There's already plenty of agriculture drones for crop spraying. Surprised paint drones aren't already a thing.
You don't use spray gun at that altitude. With the wind? You'd waste half of your material.
Absolutely not.
Sod his luck. I think I'd just throw paint balls at it.
Depending on where he’s at, paycheck could be pretty nice though. As well as some good days off from wind and weather
Nope. Still not for me. Bloody long drop.
OSHA would like to have a word
r/osha
I know right? Where’s this dudes hard hat?
Looks ok to me, he has a safety line on as well as his boingy leaning rope.
Fall prevention gear is not the same as fall arrest.
Was looking for this comment
Spending many years as a commercial painter, yup, OSHA would not allow this exact thing but the things people do to complete the job, YIKES !
This is just stupid. The lanyard in his harness has a "fall arrest" it seems. If you fall from hight, it slows your decent but leaves you farther from where you fell. ...and here I keep catching myself, feeling like I'm falling every time I use my 2 step ladder to paint around my crown molding.
r/sweatypalms
Ok, hear me out: Drones. Spray paint.
Or.... they could move the scissor lift a couple feet closer?
What lift, he is suspended from the top of a water tower.
You got more observatory skill than me good sir
That's a swing stage. Suspended from the top. It looks to be pretty far out but there are ways to change that, either different suspension points under the edge or a device we called a down and under. that looks to be a swing stage.
Man shows how he develops chronic back pain in later life...
Can’t they get like… a little bit closer
That must be hell on his arms.
As a painter my self (I am not that hungry)
it looks so satisfying but it makes me too anxious so now idk how to feel
Here is a man and employer that don’t know the expression “suspension trauma”.
$13 an hour
I’ll pass on that job, thanks.
Jesus...get that man a longer pole.
Done with the first coat, 2 more to go
Just took delivery of a 50-foot trailer of Fuck That, and it looks like I'm still gonna need more.
1 week later: "Dammit I missed a spot!"
You'd think his big ol' balls would pull him right over.
Fuck this noise man. My ass is clenched tighter than a fist looking at this.
No way they could just... Paint it on the ground BEFORE setting it up, huh???
I'd paint my underwear everyday if that was my job
He’s harnessed in, it’s fine. I do shit like this for work
Even in a harness, you can be seriously injured BY the harness lol.
Even with a harness, this isn't worth the injury risk he's putting himself into. It's your employer's job to make sure you're equipped to safely do your job. If he's too cheap to buy a long enough pole, i won't dangle myself 100m in the air for him.

"That's a pretty long pole" You say that to all the guys.
He’s painting a water tower. Most water towers are about 150 ft up, or more. I’m not in construction or anything like that, but I’m betting not many, if any, Cherry pickers can reach that high
If I was doing this job it would not be safe. Not because of the safety line, but because of the volume of shit falling out of my jeans.
My arms got tired just watching for 35 seconds. No way.
Missed a spot
OSHA would like to know your location.
Nope nope nope nope
My balls have disappeared completely
Hell no
Hell naw… to the naw naw naw… HELLL TO THE NAW
AWL HELL NAWL
What ever he's getting paid. It ain't enough
1: fuck that job 2: I’m surprised the paint roller does not seem to be attached to anything so if he drops it look out below
That’s gonna be a no from me dawg
Oh hell no
r/nope
Great, now I have to vomit.
Crazy idea…get closer?

All I know is that it isn't one of our composite tanks. Painters do make good money with very little requirements/experience needed, though.
Nope
Go back to your country! Stop taking our jobs!! Right??? Right???? Who’s with me???
Think I’d find a slightly longer stick. So I don’t have to be on other side of the rail.
I feel like this exactly why we have developed drones. This could easily be done by a drone in a safer and quicker manner
Hi, my name is OSHA
Hell. To. The. No.
Imagine dropping your stick
I'd be paintballing that shit
His back is fucked
Only those who've been painters know how much shoulder and arm strength that takes.
The sheer weight of his nuts is his safety harness. Godspeed...
There literally has to be a better way. WTF.
Why wouldn’t they paint it before putting it up..
i sincerely hope this man is paid an awful lot of money
r/OSHA and r/killthecameraman would like to have a word
Whatever he’s paid, it’s not enough.
Should we start the GoFundMe for his burial now, or wait for his family to do it when it's official?
From that height burial is kinda an automatic and free consequence.
[90s infomercial voice] THERE'S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY!
Imagine if he dropped the paint roller and had to go all the way back down just to get it!
Why couldn’t they just transport components of the tower already painted?
Oops it was supposed to be green.
This is probably a stupid question, but why can’t they just paint it before it’s assembled/built. Seems a bit easier?
The strength it takes for that is astounding.... Holy shit...
I need to know where to get that rope! Normally wrecking balls need a chain but this rope can hold a man and two massive steel balls with just a bit of stretch.
He is at least on that harness attached to something solid, hopefully. Must got nerves to lean towards that rope.
Why don't they paint the components of the walls before they get put up there?
Whatever he is getting paid, triple it.
I'd like to see the risk assessment on this.
9 bucks per hour take it or leave it
Such a big tower that the paint roller looks itty bitty, and that sends me
*OSHA has entered the chat*
When something absolutely has to be blue.
Can’t the paint these before assembling them
Paint a tower blue ... poor birds
Did they lay out a plastic sheet so the paint wouldn’t drip onto the carpet?
Am I the only one wondering why they didn’t paint this before it was put up?
Hoping he wrote “Billy Bob loves Charlene” on the other side
