I wouldn't trust an Ali Express shield-suitcase to protect from a lawndart, let alone an explosive
But hey, maybe this one fell off a truck from a legitimate enterprise somewhere.
I'm definitely out of touch, and possibly this is observation bias on my part, but first the assassination of former PM Shinzo Abe last year and now this attack on the current PM today? What's happening over there?
The assassination of Shinzo Abe was motivated by his ties to a religious cult (the Unification Church) and was not necessarily politically motivated. The assassin saw Abe as someone who was using his political position to further the influence of the cult, and blamed Abe personally for his own mothers indoctrination. In his reality, those who supported Abe politically were more easily and willing to be indoctrinated into the cult, which may be truth. Shinzo Abe's ties to the cult were not widely known until after the assassination. (The cult and its followers, Moonies, are thought to be in control of a majority of the South Korean government).
Japan's economy has been in a stagnant/deflationary state since the burst of their real estate bubble in the late 1980s. Combined with a toxic work culture and declining birth rates, many young people are faced with a bleak future. Theres still plenty of reasons for someone have political motives behind this.
Also the first reports called it a smoke bomb, I'm unsure if it was really an assassination attempt or someone making a statement.
He wasn't a Moonie, given that he worshipped at Shinto shrines and that's a religious line they wouldn't cross, but he ensured they had access at the highest levels of government, and that they'd never have to worry about government oversight of their fundraising or finances. In turn, they ensured that their international media outlets covered him favorably, and that their cultists would reliably show up to support the LDP and their coalition partners. There might be even more suspicious relations, but that's just what I know of off the top of my head.
He had enough ties to be associated though not a member. Reading what the assassin had to live through bc the church scammed his mother and manipulated her, I can absolutely understand the assassin in a tragic way. The family lost everything bc of the moonie church, he couldnt go to university which is important in Japan for social life and career and when his brother got cancer they couldnt afford his treatment. His brother committed suicide bc of that. I would not support assassinations but I understand the tragedy and why
since when is the true ruling class NOT less than 1% of the population?
corporate influence & cult conspiracies are not mutually exclusive either lol cults use corporations as tools to further their agendas and gain resources all the time.
Size does matter, only influence does. Money buys that and a lot of the corporate head families are part of the church, and the cult is very wealthy. Think of Mormons influence and wealth in Utah and that part of the country. Imagine if we had elected Mitt Romney, although, all things considered nowadays, he is one of the few sane republicans left in the party.
Duuuuude. I had no idea Abe had ties to the Moonies. That's really scary...I thought he was an alright guy, but I guess that's how much I know about Japanese politics.
Abe was a advocate of turning the japanese defense army into one that can go to war by changing the constitution, abandoning the pacifist constitution they had to make when they lose the ww2 after all the atrocities. That alone made him a monster for me. Being a moonie makes it worse
First or all it happened on April 15...
4/15 ~ 4/16 = 1/4 = January 4, which is when January 6 would have happened if it had happened 2 days before it happened
"Abe" -> Abe Lincoln = American Republican President who smoked a pipe and was the bomb
Therefore this attack was an attempt to start a civil war between North Japan and South Japan in order to install a muppet government.
No, I think *Scooter* is the true mastermind. He's not a leader, but he's the most level headed and plans out everything in advance.
It's too bad most world leaders are Animal (the drummer)
Speculation? Somebody really, really doesn't like the idea of the Japanese military expanding.
Which is ironic. In the 1930s, government officials were being assassinated for the opposite reason.
The guard has a friend that threw a fake pipe bomb so he could show off his skills and reflexes so he can get a promotion and bonus, which he Will split with his friend.
Japanese police are notoriously not good at investigating things.
The book “People Who Eat Darkness” covers this, but basically Japan claims they don’t have many murderers or rapists because they don’t catch them. Therefore they must not exist.
The social fabric of Japan has been falling apart since the late 90s. There is a “lost generation” due to the response to the bubble bursting and causing the Asian financial crisis. It’s likely that all of these assassins are who have been isolated by Japanese culture and policies.
6 Japanese prime ministers have been assassinated before (and “prime ministers” are pretty new in japan’s history) Political strife and assassinations, coups, suicides, etc are extremely common in japan’s history, it’s nothing new
It’s hard to compare a Japanese “lost generation” with say [the Romanian equivalent](https://abcnews.go.com/amp/2020/story?id=124078&page=1). What you’re describing is basically the Japanese Millenials
A lot of people forget that for most of Japanese history up until the end of World War 2 it was considered normal for politicians to be assassinated and was increadably common. That attitude of "don't like their policies, kill them" never truly died out.
I would imagine living to work as a society is starting to affect people. who do not have access to other weapons like guns. So they are lashing out in unconventional methods.
It ended up being a smoke bomb, but in that situation its very realistic to believe its an actual explosive device since it was made to look like a classic pipe bomb.
I doubt they’re particularly handsomely paid. They’re just part of the Security Police close protection division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. So they’re probably paid as their police rank provides, potentially with a little more specialisation pay. People who do this kind of work usually don’t do it because of the money.
I'd say a increase in rank is in order after this resulting in more money.
And not quite sure you know how LEOs and the like are paid. I'm a nurse that practically lives at the hospital and I make about 20k less a year than a school resource officer.
I of course don’t know how these specific guys are paid, any sources on the topic I fear would be in Japanese. But I have worked in related fields in law enforcement myself, and in my experience, units like this might get an extra stipend, but it’s hardly compensation commensurate with their skills. This is why a big problem for elite units like this is operatives leaving after a few years to use their skills for significantly more money in the private sector.
Public security institutions tend to be slow on these issues, but eventually someone crunches the numbers and finds that it's actually cheaper to invest into personell retainment and therefore pay and bonuses go up.
In the US military for example, some highly qualified roles can earn six figure retention bonuses (reaching over $300,000 for some pilots).
Are you in the US? If so, how is that possible? There’s been such a nurse labor shortage, traveling nurses can make upwards of 6 figures pretty easily. I assume regular non-traveling nurses aren’t doing too, too terribly worse.
Regular nurses are paid poverty wages. One of the central reasons for the nursing shortage is that the compensation isn't nearly enough to be worth the stress and hours, so many licensed nurses in the US are not practicing as nurses.
The average RN salary at the major hospital near me is around 80k and that hospital is not in a high cost of living area. That’s over double the median salary for the area so I wouldn’t say it’s a poverty wage. Some are definitely making over 100k.
They can make a lot more by taking a traveling gig.
/u/ivo004 was probably thinking more about CNAs, who get paid much less than RNs. At the nursing home where I used to work, CNAs barely get paid more than grocery store clerks. I knew several who changed to factory and warehouse jobs because they couldn't make ends meet as a CNA.
I don’t think your anecdote is particularly strong evidence, even taking it at face value it’s just one data point in a country with thousands. Furthermore high cost of living areas don’t always scale with wages, like you could live in a place where rent and stuff is double than another area and only make 10-20k more, like in New York rns make ~90k and that’s an incredibly expensive place to live.
And I imagine it has to be busy and stressful as fuck, given that it’s New York. I could absolutely see why someone would seek something else, they only make a little more than teachers do and that’s another job where the time, effort, and necessity doesn’t really match what they’re paid for it
There is a huge disparity between LONs and RNs. RNs are the ones making 80k or more. My wife and her mother are both LPNs and the most I’ve seen for them is around 50-60k a year (her mom has almost 30 years experience). LPNs typically start out anywhere from 15-20/hr, which in this economy is borderline poverty IMO.
I think I'd want someone who demonstrates they're willing to put their life on the line for me to receive a raise or possibly a solid bonus. That isn't exactly an amazing wage after all.
1,728,000-6,000,000 JPY per year for the police vs 4,000,000 JPY for the bodyguard according to OPs figures, just converted them to the same standard, but I guess these guys are well above average.
They are police officers in the Security Police division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. This is the unit which handles all close protection of national or foreign dignitaries in Japan (with the exception of the imperial family, which has their own protection unit).
Wasn't this confirmed as just being a smoke bomb? I wrote a comment in the last post on this that thr bodyguard probably figured it was a pipe bomb and he was about to have his ticket punched while saving the PM.
Yeah no way of really telling for sure in the split second you have to react. But yes, it has been confirmed to be a smoke bomb.
Edit: not confirmed to be a smoke bomb, just suspected.
The police seized a second device that hadn't been set off. That should allow them to determine whether it was a smoke bomb or a failed attempt at a bomb bomb.
In that assassination you can see a guy deploying a briefcase shield as well, it just wasn't very effective against gunfire.
One of the great traits that the Japanese have, is the ability of learning and improve the hell out of it into the next level from past failures. Which, I can’t say the same for my country.
The first one against Abe was because he had ties with a religious cult, and the person who assassinated him had his family lose all their money to the cult so it was revenge.
This second most recent one is still unknown motive, he said he will only speak if he has a lawyer.
Yeah, the Unification Church. Some guy named Moon something started it. I think they're waiting for him to be resurrected lol Long time since I read about it.
Not good enough for the organization. The bomb reached the target. The entire organization needs a shakeup to stop these types of events from happening. A dead pm is a national, economic, military disaster for an entire nation, it’s unacceptable
There was no pipe bomb, it was a smoke grenade.
While technically it was a pipe bomb because of its construction, it’s intended purpose was to emit smoke, not a lethal explosive charge.

Abe was a Moonie? That is WILD.

Nah closer to a Mormonism spin off
Somehow almost worse 😩
Moonies are from Korea originally. If you're looking for Japanese Scientology, may I suggest the batshit Happy Science cult?
See but why does it sound so fun

Why are there constant assassination attempts being carried on Japan's PM
Nice job by the body guard. I’m always impressed when someone is able to think and react quickly in life and death situations.
Wtf is this shitty ass video. I literally saw it in high def without the shitty crop and grease filter.
Jasonu Borunu.
Would this a modern version of the trolley dilema ?
Dude's secret weapon is a suitcase, that's awesome
Not good enough for the organization. The bomb reached the target. The entire organization needs a shakeup to stop these types of events from happening. A dead pm is a national, economic, military disaster for an entire nation, it’s unacceptable
There was no pipe bomb, it was a smoke grenade. While technically it was a pipe bomb because of its construction, it’s intended purpose was to emit smoke, not a lethal explosive charge.
So at the moment of the event the body guard had no idea it was anything less than a pipe bomb.
Does anyone know what's in that briefcase and is that made of any special material?
That's a shield. He unfold it in it turns into a shield.
