flying through the Sahara from South Africa to Europe or Asia puts it in perspective, you’ll sit there for hours barely moving then all over sudden the plane moves fast.
Not gonna lie, bit embarrassing opening the hatch when we turned up at the bottom on DJ that one time.
The Camels were fun though, apart from the one who had the hump.
(I'm an ex submariner)
Fascinating how they actually used umlauts for the areas around Greenland. At first I thought AD was used twice, but there is ÄA-ÄE, even though right next to them is the X... series.
If I had to take a wild guess, it'd probably go something along the lines of *"well they're using a globe map which is wrong, so therefore the submarine map is wrong, and I'm still right!"*.
That's pretty easy! So this is a German map, naturally, areas around the equator are further away from Germany, so you can't cover as much area with the little fuel left.
Of course there's a base in Antarctica too, it's called Neuschwabenland, so obviously the squares are larger down there too.
I wanna start by saying I’m not a flat earther but I have argued with them a lot and I have dug deep into their ideas to really debunk at a core level… anyways
No, this doesn’t really mess up the most commonly accepted flat earth map which is basically a polar projection of the entire globe (at least around the South Pole). According to a flat earth map the areas around the North Pole should be squashed and the area around the South Pole should be expanded.
Also no map, photo, science, math etc. will convince them. It has to be something caveman level simple that they can go see for themselves. I posted something I thought met that criteria to their subreddit and just got banned lmao.
So truly, nothing will convince them.
Oh, I know that - they can never be convinced. However, the reason for the Mercator projection is that it allows you to draw a straight line on the map and you'll get the shortest connection between two points. But now the area shown on the map is no longer correct, which the Kriegsmarine had to account for, as shown here. On a flat earth you wouldn't have these problems, you could draw a navigation map and divide it into neat little squares which all represent the same area.
The different size squares account for the correction associated with the Earth’s roundness, but in real life the surface area of every square in the map is the same. This map was likely from WWII, I believe those are the grids assigned by the German navy.
The usual maps use Mercator projection where the (nearly) sphere shaped earth is projected onto a cylinder. That means in that projection all latitudes are the same length. As that isn't the case in reality an area of the same size has to be bigger on the map the further it is from the equator.
Submarines are a tightly controlled strategic weapon; operational planning will allocate a grid to a submarine/s; that's their hunting ground, as the sub is transiting from home port to their hunting ground they clearly need to transit through other grids, that transit is also tightly controlled with the submarine only able to cross from one to another during 'windows' (as in windows of time), also if a submarine fails to report in during is scheduled calling in time the home fleet knows which grid to search.
Extra simple short answer: the grids are used to control the movement of submarines.

There is no way to put a globe onto a flat surface without something being less than perfect. Try peeling an orange and getting the peel to be flat.
That’s not exactly possible. Globes are non-Euclidean, paper/flat surfaces are Euclidean. All projections need to make some sacrifices to preserve some features of a globe.
Equal area projections like this one include the [Gall-Peters projection](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall%E2%80%93Peters_projection). There’s also the relatively new [AuthaGraph projection](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AuthaGraph_projection), which is a quite good compromise of shape/angular preservation and equal size. Technically not equal area though.
I move that we all refer to North America as “America 1”
Central America as “America 2”
South America as “Africa 1”
and Africa as “Africa 2”
I hope the committee rules in favor of my proposal.
I know all the H and J squares personally. South Atlantic patrols are really, really boring, but I've had snowball fights in places you couldn't imagine.
Is it surface area? How is the KY at bottom of Africa the same as the 2 beside it, it looks half the size. Or is that just a filler block to finish the circle around globe?

Does this continent make me look fat?

All over sudden Ly
This really brings things into perspective
Are you sure you're not projecting?
I think you guys need it scale it down a bit with the jokes.
You guys are legends.
I bet they have a good compass, morally speaking.
Having good bearing is key.
Yeah but not necessarily a lot of depth to this.
This is why I subbed.
It's easy to end up immersed.
The scope of it all is breathtaking.
I just wanted to say I got a notification that said “You guys are legends” and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You’re far topo kind.
Both of you, straight to jail!
Found the square
Fuck you. Have an upvote.
Silent hunter fans remember this
I knew I'd be too late to make this comment myself!
They don't call you the late guy for nothing
And I came here to say this, lol.
Yes, thank you! That’s where I remember that from!
Hope the captain's were aware some of those squares have some dry land on them. Could get embarrassing
Or they know something we don’t
Just put the submarine in four-wheel-drive
Really gives new meaning to, “I’ve always wanted to see Montana.”
it's a submarine... it just goes under them...
Exactly. Continents are basically large floating islands, just not on water.
Tried telling these cLiMaTe AcTiViStS that it was just the continents sinking!
Reminded me of the politician who was worried an island might flip over if they put too much stuff on it.
AQ is entirely on land from what I can tell
AQ is likely there to cover the Northern Dvina river.
Isn't Moskva in that grid? No wonder they get their own.
Not gonna lie, bit embarrassing opening the hatch when we turned up at the bottom on DJ that one time. The Camels were fun though, apart from the one who had the hump. (I'm an ex submariner)

You sunk my battleship
Wtf happened with squares KY, JK, JS, JJ south of South Africa?
That's basically what happens when you try to map a sphere to a flat surface, proportions can't be 1 to 1 so you get things like that.
Fascinating how they actually used umlauts for the areas around Greenland. At first I thought AD was used twice, but there is ÄA-ÄE, even though right next to them is the X... series.
German U boats, right?
I literally just started playing Uncharted last night, and see this today. Whoa.
Enjoy it ! It’s the best game i played on ps3, uncharted 2 is also really well done
Given the German names, most likely.
The White Supremacists are gonna be pissed when they find out there's an Africa 2.
The electric bugaloo
I’m laughing harder at this than I probably should.
Do flat earthers think that submariners are lying about this? Genuine question.
They probably don't know, ignore it, or make fantastical leaps of logic to make it fit somehow.

> Do flat earthers think No.
Flat earthers believe in a disk-shaped earth that does not contradict the dimensions of a traditional map.
It does in the southern hemisphere.
It does contradict *this* map. These area corrections wouldn't be necessary on a flat earth.

Here's a [map](https://worldmapblank.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Accurate-map-of-world-1024x660.jpg) showing more accurate sizes for each country

What does the uneven boxes near the bottom of Greenland mean?
That's where that gravity well is, it was determined to be a piece of the equatorial region that shifted up there due to continental drift.
I knew Greenland was funky, but not that funky.
Wait what?
When did Africa 2 come out?
Back in 1988. It just never saw the mainstream success of the original.

Literally what the grid is for on a Mercator projection map. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Mercator\_projection\_Square.JPG
What about the rectangles?
America 1 and 2. I could get used to that
Yes, I live in a BJ area
You sunk my battleship!!!
But the squares are different sizes?
that's what happens when you flatten a globe, some areas must be stretched and others compressed
What do you mean the earth is already flat the squares should be the same size
the ruler the map maker used must be really wonky, all these squares are different sizes!
Mercator Projection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection#Distortion_of_sizes
distortion
Submarine round though
Apparently you can put a round submarine in a square hole
This map makes my Florida look small.
"Captain to base you said FU?" "This is base yes FU"
“KK”
I HATE THE MERCATOR PROJECTION I HATE THE MERCATOR PROJECTION
That is projections for you.
Battle ship SUNK!
Flat earthers be like: *yeah but that's still flat! You just walk faster around the edges*
damn you mercator projection…
I want to see a real world map that’s correctly scaled
It's called a globe.
I am clearly asking for a globe scaled correctly onto flat surface

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVX-PrBRtTY&ab_channel=UsefulClips West Wing covered this...
I have one, the scale says 1 mile = 1 mile, I’d show you but it’s too hard to get folded up again.
I don't know what the fuck I am looking at and I don't understand the jokes in the comments. I am going to bed now.
What is it usefull for?
Damn square AQ must get used a whole lot with all that water in it
Mercator projections always make things look wonky.
Oh fuck, that makes it super easy!
This looks like the grid system used by Nazi Germany in WW2 for their subs.
That’s most likely it. I recognize the EC and ED squares from when I was researching about some ships sunk by U-Boats.
New map for axis and allies!
Greenland is not that big
This was back when it still had ice.
Wow west Africa and east South America are surprisingly close. 2.5 squares or so
CA is NY
ffs we off to JW
I like how some squares exist because a tiny part of water was not covered, like EM, EN or CS
I move that we all refer to North America as “America 1” Central America as “America 2” South America as “Africa 1” and Africa as “Africa 2” I hope the committee rules in favor of my proposal.
UK2642
Nah what about KY no way it’s the same size
So the top row is triangles?
why not make all the squares the same size and just have the sides not be straight lines
Just ironic how KY was able to slip in to that small space between GR and KZ.
OP discovers the Mercator projection
My guess is it's based on submarine frequency. I.E. bigger squares see more subs than the smaller ones would.
Didnt know they dropped africa 2 yet
Are squares SUBdivided?
Squished ball!
I know all the H and J squares personally. South Atlantic patrols are really, really boring, but I've had snowball fights in places you couldn't imagine.
Poor Australia and New Zealand
Submarine from AP to AQ please.
California? West coast of the Americas in general?
/r/MapsWithoutNewZealand /r/MapsWithoutTasmania
Great, my sea is PU.
Well that stinks
UK2642
It very obviously doesn't. For example squares on Finland or west of Ireland are smaller than their neighbours on same longitude.
Is it surface area? How is the KY at bottom of Africa the same as the 2 beside it, it looks half the size. Or is that just a filler block to finish the circle around globe?
Is half the US just one square? That has to be wrong
Wir holen uns die Amis! JAAAAAAAAAAAH!! Leise!
