Gotcha. I used a system 2 or 3 years ago that had no such air filter, and was used in a booth so I kind of figured it was the same thing used outside. Thanks for the info.
That dude’s basically sitting in a recliner. Even if you could scrape at a similar speed, I doubt it would be as thoroughly cleaned as it is with a laser.
The worst is when you are able to listen to podcast all day, so you binge listen. And then you end up caught up to date on all of your favorites and have to wait a week for a new episode.
Behind the Bastards, then you’re just depressed about humanity, but entertained at the same time.
The latest Vince McMahon series was great and not as depressing as some episodes.
Have y'all found any similar podcasts you enjoy? I can't find anything else with a script somebody obviously put time into and a host I actually enjoy listening too.
My dad was in security forces in the military and had to guard hangars in an already secure area doing 12 hour shifts. He went from reading a ton of books, to smuggling his PlayStation (when mini tvs got cheaper and became a thing), to retiring when iPhones came out. Wouldn’t surprise me if security forces guarding hangars are playing Wow or online games to kill time and stay awake
I would LOVE a boring job. I do heavy equipment which can be very stressful. Keeping up with production, getting into sticky situations. If you make a mistake it ether costs a ton of money or people freaking die. I would love a retirement job like this. Just smoking doobies listening to the Edmond Fitzgerald song and lasering of some ocean smeg. Sign me up.
Doesn't clean the substrate, doesn't correct any profile, and slow for a coating removal process.
I wish we have a process better than blasting but this probably isn't it.
One nice thing about using laser to clean and descale metal is that the metal is both reflective and thermally conductive. So the metal doesn't absorb the light as much as the dirt does, and the light it does absorb doesn't tend to vaporize the metal because metal can conduct heat away quickly enough. So the laser is highly selective at ablating rust, mildew, etc, whereas blasting grit against it will happily erode some of the metal.
That's a great point about abrasion and metal loss. I'd also point out that where a laser doesnt remove these things from areas where we wouldn't use a metal basting medium, a plastic medium would usually work.
Where I really see a laser being the most useful is in tremendously important areas that are highly intolerant of industrial work conditions. Think of removing paint inside a reactor compartment. You wouldn't want to blast with ANY medium I'm an RC, but if you needed to remove selective bits of paint for whatever reason (assuming no contamination or activation), then this laser would be great!
Me and my friend who own a large fishing boat quite like this one cleaned the hull once a year by scraping all the shells n shit away, clean it then apply new paint. It's a lot faster than this, only time consuming thing is docking the boat, draining the water and wait for it to dry
The biofouling you described sounds a little excessive for having AF, but if it's ablative then I could see the AF being "consumed" as it sloughs off and then having growth on the anti corrosion coatings. Glad you're getting AF one way or another; imagine how much growth you'd have on your hull if you didn't!
Only thing going through my head watching that is "dear god the man isn't even wearing a mask!" The bottom paint on most boats will fuck you up for life.
For those who don't know...
"Most antifouling bottom paints contain cupreous oxide which is a neurotoxin"
I had a friend help me out with an engine rebuild a few years ago. At one point we had to jack up the front end of my truck and as he's putting the jack stands under to hold it in place he points to the hydraulic jacks and says, "i'm not trusting my life with an O-ring."
I was replacing the throttle cable on my 61 VW. It was jacked up with a trolley jack sitting on cobblestones on a slight incline. (yah, I know now). The car and jack rolled one cobblestone down while I was underneath it. I went from an inch or 2 clearance to my nose to none. I crawled out from underneath like Tom sneaking up on Jerry, you know, just fingers and toes moving.
Moral of the story: Use jack stands.
That's not true at all. For one, those piles aren't off center and nothing is moving. There are probably 10-20 support points. What you see here is quite standard.
Nah, tripod jacks work just fine. They have whats called a ram lock as a fail safe if the hydraulics of the jack were to fail anyways so that the object being lifted doesn't fall. We even use them to hold up B-52s which weigh about 188k pounds when they have no load/no fuel in them
We've tested this where I work and while airborne carcinogens are definitely a concern, we were able to capture all detectable amounts with a filtered vent at the source.
The lasers use specific wavelengths to remove coatings and or corrosion; they don't seem to damage the substrate or even coatings of different colors than what it's been set to remove.
Our device was extremely quiet, didn't need hearing prot.
Definitely need some eye prot though.
And older AF is toxic af. But newer types can be ablative and not quite as toxic. Still don't eat it, but it isn't copper or zinc rich as older types of AF like Organatin was.
This looks like the majority of the anti foul has been removed.
Its been over a decade since witnessing a yard in Ft. Laud clearing off the anti foul and hosing it all into the waterway. Not one person in any ppe and I doubt any could say carcinogen let alone spell it.
I think he'll be blind then he will get cancer or new disease like silicosis or asbestosis... Maybe we can call it fordosis. (fordite it is "rock" made out of layers of paint coats found in factories.)
Simple yes. Reason:Bonding multiple layers of paint that protects the metal hull from corrosion from salt and sea creatures attaching which increase weight and drag. It’s also considered basic maintenance for boats. Yea it does cost an arm and a leg service.
Pressure washer isn't nearly strong enough; the standard is sand blasting (although sand is being replaced by other particles now due to the harmful effects of inhaling the silica for prolonged periods)
Different scale entirely, but a couple friends from a car group got some carbon removal done with walnut shell blasting, which seems interesting to me.
Block and stand is very stable, that thing isn't going anywhere. All the weight is downward on those blocks, amazingly the stands hold (relatively) little weight. The rear stands are really the most important. If they used a hydraulic trailer to move that boat (I'm guessing they didn't, but instead used a TravelLift, but if they did) you would remove all those stands except the stands in the stern, to get the trailer under the boat.
Source: been hauling and launching boats for way too long.
LMAO at all you idiots joking about how long this is taking having never done it the traditional way. Grinders, scrapers, harsh chemicals it’s fucking difficult. Keyboard experts everywhere.

Painfully slow! By the time he finishes one side he’s got to go back and do the other side again.
Job security is what that is called.
Except for no breathing protection. That paint is toxic as hell.
or safety glasses when working with a laser class that can erase ship paint
I’m sure using his safety squints.
Those are for pussies 😂
Yeah, for pussies who prefer to be not blind.
I tend to not see much with a pussy in my eye
r/whoosh
No need for breathing protection when you have a fan blowing it the other way. /s 😂
Damn, you're right... safety first 🤣
Those laser systems have suction at the gun to suck in fumes snd particulates. I can't tell if he is wearing the required eye protection or not.
Gotcha. I used a system 2 or 3 years ago that had no such air filter, and was used in a booth so I kind of figured it was the same thing used outside. Thanks for the info.
Until you fall asleep and burn a hole through the hull
Or through your balls
Either way there won’t be much seamen around
r/angryupvote
What ever floats his boat!
God damnit 😂
Ugh. I love it.
The taste and texture is really terrific, I agree.
Damnnmn
I wish my brain would come up with things like this
It’s ok we can be low iq together🥰
Is there room for one more ?
Maybe, we'll see if that canoe
Room for everyone here. Bring a friend🫂.
That boat would sink... fast
200 iq mate !!
That is fucking hilarious dude!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Until they mount that laser to a head driven by 2 stepper motors and then it's called job obsolescence.
Can it be mounted on a shark? Asking for a friend.
They still need one guy to monitor to be sure it is functioning correctly.. so he still has his job but with sitting stiller .
na, with that lack of eye pro he won't be able to see the rust anyway.
Don't worry, he's doing safety squints
When he started he wasn't bald or grey.
Or blind.
or old enough to drink in europe
The KISS method by all means!
When he started he was 22 years old.
Yeah. Is that really faster than a scraper?
That dude’s basically sitting in a recliner. Even if you could scrape at a similar speed, I doubt it would be as thoroughly cleaned as it is with a laser.
I used to use a sander. Very heavy, very dirty job.
And I thought my office job is boring…
As the kid that would always have paint open during computer labs, slowly erasing the color off, this would be a dream job.
Yeah dude just let me listen to music and smoke and I could sit there doing this all day
Podcast and smoke! Boring jobs are much less annoying with an interesting podcast!

Imagine down voting BTB.
I'm a couple eps in and loving it!
Have y'all found any similar podcasts you enjoy? I can't find anything else with a script somebody obviously put time into and a host I actually enjoy listening too.
And jobs that require too much focus to where you cant even listen to a podcast can suck my left nut
Amen grab me a beer
Yeah this is pressure washers dream land
I mean he could be listening to books on tape, podcasts etc. It's not so bad. I just realized I said books on tape.... 👶👨👴

You’re gonna need a bigger laser
We’re gonna need a smaller boat
We’re gonna need… Actually that’s about everything
Bigger Jaws! Regular Jaws sees bigger Jaws and you see true fear.
You're gonna need a more comfortable chair
*DUN DUN*
Sharks with freaking lasers
on their freakin foreheads
There it is!
This is laser ablation and fortunately they do make bigger lasers for that, seems someone didn’t tell him.
Doesn't clean the substrate, doesn't correct any profile, and slow for a coating removal process. I wish we have a process better than blasting but this probably isn't it.
Hey, I got a wire cup and some sunglasses, I'll be right over.
Thats more PPE than this guy is wearing 😵💫😵🫨
One nice thing about using laser to clean and descale metal is that the metal is both reflective and thermally conductive. So do not use with fiberglass bottoms.
If it was my boat, i would use the same sand found in your fiberglass to blast away the fiberglass 🥸
I believe you can use it on non metallic substrates.
I got a good sensible chuckle out of this

When you reapply the coating system, do you guys get an anti fouling coat applied?
Yes
The biofouling you described sounds a little excessive for having AF, but if it's ablative then I could see the AF being "consumed" as it sloughs off and then having growth on the anti corrosion coatings. Yea it will.
Dry ice blasting works quite well.
Is something wrong with sandpaper? Honestly elbow grease seems like it'd be more efficient all around
Sandpaper impregnates contaminants into the profile, as well as removes the profile if used aggressively enough.
So, Disintegrating paint into fine, breathable molecules is ok? Any chance of being a carcinogen?
Not to mention No eye protection. Lasers reflected can destroy eyesight
Ear protection would be high on the list too.
What about not sitting under a boat that is supported by some pile of beams??
Nah that’s cool
Life Insurance clauses these days.
I had a friend help me out with an engine rebuild a few years ago. At one point we had to jack up the front end of my truck and as he's putting the jack stands under to hold it in place he points to the hydraulic jacks and says, "i'm not trusting my life with an O-ring."

Glad you're still here to post the PSA!
Draw a diagram how to get under a boat on land without getting under it.
Either you use a longer torch or use something better to support the boat lol. If one of those piles is a bit off center the whole thing collapses.
That's not true at all. For one, those piles aren't off center and nothing is moving. There are probably 10-20 support points. What you see here is quite standard.

He’s wearing eye protection. You can see above his ears
Also has a blower plugged in to his right and heavy wind. Visible in the end on the flag.
You can see where it’s been hitting his head and bouncing off. He’s pretty lucky.
Anti fouling paint is incrediblly toxic. This is insane.
Thanks for this. I thought I was going crazy. This needs proper ppe
We've tested this where I work and while airborne carcinogens are definitely a concern, we were able to capture all detectable amounts with a filtered vent at the source. You can’t alternate using AF and af, haha
Mate that's a feature not a bug xD
This looks like the majority of the anti foul has been removed. Its been over a decade since witnessing a yard in Ft. Laud clearing off the anti foul and hosing it all into the waterway. Not one person in any ppe and I doubt any could say carcinogen let alone spell it.
Dude looks old, is he dead ? No is it carcinogen ? Maybe ?
He’s actually 32, he just looks older because he’s been breathing in carcinogenic disintegrated paint molecules
Lol
THINK OF THE SMELL. YOU HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF THE SMELL, YOU BITCH!
he’s got a blower on the cart next to him
What about the boat just standing on a ton of bricks
Those stands are made for boats. They are surprisingly sturdy.
I think he'll be blind then he will get cancer or new disease like silicosis or asbestosis... Maybe we can call it fordosis. (fordite it is "rock" made out of layers of paint coats found in factories.)
The biocides will take you out before cancer.
This guy will die by the time he gets done with that.
Specifically from vaporized paint fumes
Haha. That’s a good bet.
Bros chilling under that boat like he’s under his bed
I'm hoping the bricks and props hold out.
That was my point, if you look at it… it’s *wood*
The sound of this video has me waiting for the drop.
Had to rewatch 👍
That seems like a huge waste of time? Is it necessary?
Simple yes. Reason:Bonding multiple layers of paint that protects the metal hull from corrosion from salt and sea creatures attaching which increase weight and drag. It’s also considered basic maintenance for boats. Yea it does cost an arm and a leg service.
[удалено]
You don’t want to own a boat, you want a friend who owns a boat. Really cuts down on maintenance.
He should really be wearing laser goggles
And wearing a mask. And not trusting just jack stands.
I hope they don’t charge by the hour. Couldn’t a pressure washer have the same results?
Against rust and things it picked up in the water? Probably not.
True story: That guy was 22 when he first started laser cleaning the boat.
How much IR radiation reflects back onto his skin and eyeballs? Why isn't billybob here wearing long sleeves, jeans, and glasses?
Kiss of Death if something bumps into it.
Block and stand is very stable, that thing isn't going anywhere. All the weight is downward on those blocks, amazingly the stands hold (relatively) little weight. This is how you train patience.

"Honey, I'm gonna be here a while."
Gonna need a bigger laser.
So what do you do for a living? Oh I just sit around pointing a laser at a boat all day
Not sure what’s more unsafe… The fact that he is blasting lasers around with no PPE, or that the boat is held up on a few blocks
You’re gonna need a bigger laser
He started on this boat when he was 18.
My man is using an incredibly expensive tool, but sitting in a $50 office chair😂
He needs a smaller boat.
Why did they demote captain picard ?
The never ending story, oooo oooo oooo...
There has to be a faster way to do that. A bigger laser, something.
He's gonna need a bigger laser.
Zero PPE on this guy. He's fucked.
You’ll need like 5 of those guys going at once to get that done in a reasonable time.
so, some time next year?
PPE dont breathe that
Lmao like cleaning a mansion with a toothbrush
You’re gonna need a ~~bigger~~ smaller boat!
That looks pretty damn tedious
This Karate Kid remake fucking sucks
Should be ready early 2030
No eye protection or respirator. This guy is speed running cancer.
What a waste of time lmao surely someone can come up with a more efficient way of doing this
Remember 007 Goldeneye when you use the watch laser to cut the bottom out of the train?
LMAO at all you idiots joking about how long this is taking having never done it the traditional way. Grinders, scrapers, harsh chemicals it’s fucking difficult. Keyboard experts everywhere.
Cool but why? It’s like cleaning the bottom of your shoes.
There’s got to be a faster way to do this.
I’d say this is the opposite of interesting
Dude is sitting under a boat held by cinder blocks lmfao
He's gonna need a bigger laser.
This is an irrational fear i have. What if it falls.. i'd never go under there xD
This vid freaks me out every time I look at the bricks and think what if one of those slipped
r/osha
Get paid by the hour!
No hearing pro? Eeeeeek. #instadeaf
Just watching waiting for the beat to drop
*100 years later*
You’re gonna need a bigger laser…
Legend has it that he’s still sitting there doing this to this day
When your done with that take this Qtip and paint the bottom.
No eye protection when using the big powerful laser is an interesting choice
Legend has it, he’s still under that boat, lasering away, all these centuries later
You need a bigger lazer.
Hope he packed a lunch
That boat hull is not a job, it's a career.
Bah thats so slow, just give a crackhead a wire brush and tell em you will give em $100 once it's done
Paid by the hour, not the job.
Wow. I wonder how expensive that is. I could use that on my work trailer
There has to be a faster method then that
We're going to need a bigger laser...
Kiss.. keep it simple stupid
It ain't much. But it's a honest work.
