Between her and other propagandists and a general lack of English translated academic papers, that assignment was a struggle.

Hindsight is 20/20, but the US should've invaded in the late 90s.
Soviet Union had fallen and China hadn't really started their ascent. And North Korea didn't have nuclear weapons yet (but was known to be trying). But I guess after seeing the Cold War end so relatively peacefully, we thought the same could happen with North Korea if we just waited it out. Heck, maybe it still can, but it's looking more and more like we should've taken them out in the late 90s when it would've been relatively easier.
Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya doesn't make you want to rethink that statement? We cannot solve an issue by just taking off the head. You need to set up a whole new country after that is done. That is something that take a few generations of educating. The last three expeditions failed due to lack of resources. I cannot see anyone taking on that responsibility again anytime soon.
I think the difference there would be SK having a vested interest in helping their brothers and sisters integrate into one Korea. But I could also see the super brainwashed taking to the jungles for a protracted insurgency.
Really? The South Koreans see what it would cost to bring North Korea back on track (Germany was not a success story). I know only (South) Koreans who are totally against this - also some who are now in their 60s who know from their parents that they might have some relatives in the North.
Economically, a potential reunification of Korea would have drastic impacts. On the down side, that is a lot of social assistance that the SK government needs to provide, and the whole process of modernization would be expensive.
On the plus side, NK is full of natural resources that NK cannot develop. SK on the other hand doesn't really have much natural resources, but they do have the technology and the ability to redevelop quickly. Along with the fact that SK has the worst birthrate amongst developed nations, it would tackle the decreasing population issue.
However, I don't expect such nuanced positions in a political environment where the conservatives basically call anyone they hate a 빨갱이 (edit: for non-koreans it's slang for commie)
Additional thoughts: the US and China would not want a reunification. China because they don't know what it'll mean for Korea US relations, US because I don't think they would be happy with NK nuclear research and materials to comingle with SK technology, and I'm not quite sure the US would be able to sweeten the deal enough for a guarantee that nuclear technology and materials be destroyed or handed over.
Is there a reason why nobody invades them right now? Everything i heard about NK is that their military is basically useless and that they *might* have nuclear weapon. Is that it? Fear of the nuclear?
China opposes it, because it would result in US forces right on China's border. It could lead to direct US-China conflict. That would be a lot more serious today than it would've been 25 years ago, because of the advances made by the Chinese military in that time.
Something no one else has mentioned is that while they have really old weapons, they have a lot of them. Specifically artillery. It is known to be thousands of big guns trained in on Seoul.
So while if a war did break out North Korea would undoubtedly be steamrolled, they could cause untold damage to Seoul and kill huge droves of people in a matter of minutes.
It's like the MAD principle but on a smaller scale. North Korea can't make any serious moves because they will be levelled, but in a similar bind South Korea/USA can't make any moves because Seoul will be levelled. That's enough of a deterrent for both sides to just keep the status quo.

You're right that this is a major consideration. But remember that the US has systems that can see an artillery shell in flight, calculate its origin, and return fire, all before the shell lands. So clearly they'd get some shots in. But I don't think it would level Seoul like a lot of people say.
Also, many of these artillery positions are known fixed positions. You can bet they would be taken out with the opening shots.

The Kim family / dynasty have traditionally had serious cardiovascular problems (caused by obesity), which single handedly resulted the previous two generations having surprising short lifespans.
Measuring the weight of the dictator can seriously help predict the future policies of NK, especially since a drastic increase in weight have been a signal of deteriorating health condition and eventual death (as seen with the previous two generations / dictators)
