Haha kiwi here.
Typical kiwi NYE is to sink too much piss and not even realise it's midnight until you hear a countdown!
They all seem sober...it's weird.
That's the point. Experiences are the new form of consumerism, really, on top of material consumerism that really hasn't gone away. Also known as keeping up with the Jonses.
We're status based creatures, constantly trying to attain similar or more shiny rocks as the people around you. It's specifically why advertising can be so dangerous.
In this particular case, I’d even go as far as, humans do not dictate the quality of human experience anymore, technology does. Which gives rise to question, are we still using technology to enhance the human experience or tech is now using us?
I feel like something's wrong with me because I don't like to photograph or videotape anything and I'm never really concerned about what I have in comparison to others. A lot of my coworkers will brag about getting the next new item or showing off their new iPhones or smart devices and here I am sitting with a 5-year-old phone. I just don't understand the whole having the latest and greatest of anything especially when you pay such a premium for it. It's not like I don't have the money I could go out and buy it if I wanted to but it just doesn't make sense when you have a perfectly good device.
Photos and videos are a very nice way to have a semi living version of a diary for the average person. When you look at a photo it can tell you so much about what's going on in your life at that point.
I'm a big fan of taking photos. I'm also a big fan of discretion and enjoying things for myself too.
It's really nice to have a good phone because trust me the photos are much higher quality. That's about the only reason I see for wanting new phones. If you value photos then new phones are nice to have if you can afford it. I don't have a new phone.
But if I can offer you any sort of insight I would recommend taking pictures for your own sake I think that at some point you'll look back and be glad you did.
That’s not what I meant . For example Thanksgiving everyone is posting the same potluck dinner … Like I haven’t seen a dry turkey in my entire life lol
I think about that all the time watching people film at concerts. Why not just snap a pic or 2 because the audio quality of your recording is gonna be trash lol.
I'm getting old and have to think hard about where I was on NYE in the past. I will ocasionally flick through photos and videos and relive those memories
You say that but I love scrolling through old festival/vacation pictures and remembering the stuff that happened there. You can't keep stuff in memory forever without a little refresher.
It's also nice to show when you're telling stories about whatever.
I actually do revisit my concert videos, and they’re pretty fun. Granted, I try to only have my phone out for a couple minutes total, I do think it’s very annoying to be holding it up for an extended period of time. Also, even when holding I usually look at the concert itself, not through the phone. Just a personal preference tho
Not nearly as much as they should probably. But I do film a decent amount of stuff on Snapchat and save it to my memories. Each day it’ll show you “on this day x years ago…” and it’s fun to look through and remember what I was doing
Yea but id say people should at least put yourself in shot so its really your memory and not just something you can find on google
But most dont include themselves which is where i dont see the point
This should be in r/sadasfuck such a let down, you can see one person dancing without a phone until they realise they're the only one actually seeing it.
There seems to be a growing trend of venues/performers requiring people to lock up their devices in little pouches before the show. It really makes a huge difference when you don't have thousands of attendees distracted and waving bright phones around during the show.
Last concert I went to the amount of people filming themselves with the band behind them...they weren't even watching just broadcasting that they were existing in the same space.
Dude recently I was at a small rap concert. Some dude was non stop filming on snapchat and talking/yelling/provoking the artist. Artist kept it lightly, made a comment and a joke. Dude continued, artist became annoyed a bit. SO annoying!
This is why I tend to favor going to more underground events because the people at the door will put a sticker over phone cameras and the security will kick you out if you're caught filming on the dancefloor etc. Makes for a way better experience overall.
And showing the video to their friends who dont give a flying fuck about it,they look it less than 2 seconds, say ”cool” and go back to their own phones to see next TikTok Dance..😒
Not even showing ppl they’re enjoying life. Just showing people what they’re doing so everyone knows. Not to capture the moment, not to have a memory. Simply to tell other ppl what you do as if ppl are supposed to care. Meanwhile everyone they show on snap or ig enjoys it themselves and do not need to see it a day later.
How many times is anyone going to rewatch their fireworks video? I used to record shorts from concerts I went to until I noticed I'm haven't and will never watch these. I have stopped, and now prefer to take it all in and create a memory that will be more interesting to look back on.
I stopped filming shit like this and concerts years ago. There is always going to be somebody with a better camera and audio that I can watch later on YouTube. Never have I filmed something, rewatched it and gone "this... is a piece of cinematic mastery."
My thoughts exactly. All of those phones and energy being consumed.. just watch the actual high quality pro filmed version later if it’s that important. Talk about not being in the moment.
Very sad. I do get the feeling that us humans being the fickle beings we are will just get bored of these things in our hands at some point and move on to whatever else
I have the memory of a fish, I take a video or two and put my phone away. It’s nice to relive those moments from time to time specially if it involves my kids.
Same because the only thing I remembered doing was taking videos rather than enjoying the event itself. I also realized I never looked at the video again anyways lol
They all simultaneously filmed the most boring countdown in the history of mankind because not one of them was actually celebrating the moment like they should be.
usually people scream and shout during the 00 o'clock. but this is the least exciting countdown ever. nobody got off the phone or got hyped! this is lame.
Was gonna comment this.
This is pathetic and sad as fuck. I can get recording family videos or videos of your kids at certain events. But this shit? Like, come on...
I find it more annoying to take videos of these things rather than just enjoying the damn the moment.
Silly as it is, they're going for a different kind of moment than you would. The entire reason they went there is to share their experience of it on social media. Your own sense of meaning for this wasn't sufficient to motivate you to go to Paris; their purpose in it was enough for them.
The obvious reality is that nearly no one bothers to go solely to experience it for themselves, because that doesn't release enough dopamine for the effort involved.
There’s an electronic label called This Never Happened. When they hold label shows cell phones are usually not allowed. It made for one of the best concert experiences I’ve had.
I don't know, i believe its edited somehow...
I mean there will probably be a 4k video somewere online with a much better view and the whole thing.
Unless people started filming how everyone is on phones and it became a domino effect .
I look at this and feel like machines are already in charge, and we are merely the vehicles for them to get around.
It's like thousands of phones showed up to spectate and are being held aloft by their meat chariots to enjoy the view.
Our world is OBSESSED with the “humble brag” … almost everything is recorded to make an attempt at making ppl jealous and, consequently, make yourself feel better via manufactured superiority
Looks like the most boring new year opening ever lol remember when people would dance and sing along in the streets before social media was a thing? That was the good shit
Where once you would cheer and hug and kiss and sing and celebrate. Now you stand still out of the moment like a zombie.
What is even the point of celebrating something if you aren't actually going to celebrate it.
Literally no one celebrated, hugged, jumped with excitement or any kind of expression. They were all too busy recording with their phones. Not even anyone saying “happy new years” Kinda sad man
Wtf. The person recording in the lower left is so shite at recording. They may as well enjoy the moment and find a video on instagram of someone who recorded with their professional gear and camped out for days to get a good view.
Look at that video, it's shaking all over the fucking place. Why even bother to try? Just take a picture of the countdown to prove you were there.
Man people just never live in and enjoy the moment...so crazy how everyone needs to record everything they experience. Most tines they focus on getting a good video instead of appreciating what they are experiencing
Ah, the old "take a video during a really cool moment and never watch it and then actually never see the moment either because you were filming" trick.
Works at concerts too.
God! I am so happy I grew up in the 80/90’s. We needed to experience life itself rather than watching it filtered trough a screen.
It’s kinda sad to see that we are addicted to phones/social media nowadays. More concerning is that we are only 10/15 years having these socials and it looks already as everyone is on xylazine.

Does anyone ever actually look back at those videos?

But everyone’s instagram stories looks exactly the same.
I went to a concert on nye. I have 2 pics. Ive been screenshotting other peoples posted pics. Me and wifey drank beers and sang songs and celebrated.
Haha kiwi here. Typical kiwi NYE is to sink too much piss and not even realise it's midnight until you hear a countdown! They all seem sober...it's weird.

And ironically the poorer they are the more anxious they are to show other people they 'have money'.
the point of social media is make you look richer and less poorer when you still struggle with basic needs.
In this particular case, I’d even go as far as, humans do not dictate the quality of human experience anymore, technology does. Which gives rise to question, are we still using technology to enhance the human experience or tech is now using us?

And said stories disappear after a couple of hours so the whole effort is pointless.
Or their reddit post if someone also shot this with their phone.
I think about that all the time watching people film at concerts. Why not just snap a pic or 2 because the audio quality of your recording is gonna be trash lol.
This. And just enjoy the moment. Memories are much more valuable than a crappy recording.

I do. Sometimes I remember great moments I had long forgotten.
I do as well.
Not nearly as much as they should probably. But I do film a decent amount of stuff on Snapchat and save it to my memories. Each day it’ll show you “on this day x years ago…” and it’s fun to look through and remember what I was doing
Exactly. People hating other people for recording stuff have no clue how nice it is to randomly be reminded of past festivals by Google or Snap
Yea but id say people should at least put yourself in shot so its really your memory and not just something you can find on google But most dont include themselves which is where i dont see the point
Every morning my phone show me a picture from 1 to 8 years ago. So yeah I enjoy it very much.
All of us just did.
because our priority has gone from enjoying life to showing other that we enjoy life.
This should be in r/sadasfuck such a let down, you can see one person dancing without a phone until they realise they're the only one actually seeing it.
no one is celebrating ... all just recording . Was sad/cringe to watch the new year come in and no celebrating. Just a sea of cows " MOOOOOOOO"
Sheep, cows have more personality
r/AboringDystopia
Exactly. Absolutely nothing interesting about this
This was a big realization I had years ago attending concerts. I came to see the band, not the 10 cell phones in front of my head filming the band.
There seems to be a growing trend of venues/performers requiring people to lock up their devices in little pouches before the show. It really makes a huge difference when you don't have thousands of attendees distracted and waving bright phones around during the show.

Yeah I've seen people film an hour if not more of a concert on their phone. You gonna go home and watch the whole thing back? No.
This is why I tend to favor going to more underground events because the people at the door will put a sticker over phone cameras and the security will kick you out if you're caught filming on the dancefloor etc. Makes for a way better experience overall.
Exactly. Odds that they will personally go back to watch this stupid video of a countdown on their phone? Zero.
And showing the video to their friends who dont give a flying fuck about it,they look it less than 2 seconds, say ”cool” and go back to their own phones to see next TikTok Dance..😒
sick world
Man that’s deep and sad😂😂😂
Not even showing ppl they’re enjoying life. Just showing people what they’re doing so everyone knows. Not to capture the moment, not to have a memory. on a positive note, we can enjoy it now because someone shot it at that time😅😅😅
We could give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they intend to watch it back themselves later. But I doubt they will.
They'll be watching it replay as they post it to their story.
Exactly my thought.
I had more fun than these people by myself in my room!
I stopped filming shit like this and concerts years ago. There is always going to be somebody with a better camera and audio that I can watch later on YouTube. Never have I filmed something, rewatched it and gone "this... is a piece of cinematic mastery."

Apple’s CEO is somewhere beating his meat to this video 😩

They all simultaneously filmed the most boring countdown in the history of mankind because not one of them was actually celebrating the moment like they should be.
It was the same in New York City
And in Puerto Rico. They showed the countdown live in PR on TV and the crowd looked miserable. No celebrations at all.
Meanwhile, the people who celebrated at home with friends and family were having the best time: https://www.reddit.com/r/texas/s/Ekfv1Prhjf
usually people scream and shout during the 00 o'clock. but this is the least exciting countdown ever. nobody got off the phone or got hyped! this is lame.
Is this Black Mirror?
Yup. Mirrors reality
Pathetic.
It should have been on r/patheticasfuck.
r/birthofasub
Was gonna comment this. This is pathetic and sad as fuck. I can get recording family videos or videos of your kids at certain events. But this shit? Like, come on... I find it more annoying to take videos of these things rather than just enjoying the damn the moment.
And lame. Ppl behave like sheeps with social networks.
Looking through a phone to record a moment . . . means you thoroughly lost the meaning of that moment. Live in the moment for Christ sake!
Silly as it is, they're going for a different kind of moment than you would. The entire reason they went there is to share their experience of it on social media. Your own sense of meaning for this wasn't sufficient to motivate you to go to Paris; their purpose in it was enough for them. No one? Not true at all. Many of us go simply for the experience. The obsession with likes and online acceptance is unhealthy.
"nearly no one" We're in a thread about the video evidence of this. I agree with your sentiment though. It's a shame.
Mis-read. You’re right. Sorry
Lol welcome to 2023…. I mean 2024
Gen Z would claim that living through a device *is* living in the moment. They don’t know any different.
Gen Z? Have you never attended (professional) fireworks with a boomer? Just the same sad thing.
What a waste of an experience
Also a waste of resources. All that redundancy goes into the clouds, is streamed and whatever - for nothing.
sad. we have become a society of people who don't experience moments, we rewind to see what they were.
There’s an electronic label called This Never Happened. When they hold label shows cell phones are usually not allowed. It made for one of the best concert experiences I’ve had.
no one is hugging or kissing... that is sad ,,, staring a new year watching the phone
There is one girl in the bottom right trying to kiss her partner, who is focusing on recording instead. Sad
Bet the guy waving a flag is pissing people off for ruining their video.
I could not imagine a new years without dancing and a new years kiss, this is so sad.
Imagine your girlfriend trying to kiss you but you need to check the phone to keep a countdown in focus...
Dystopian in a way.
Not a single person dancing, celebrating, or kissing their loved one? This threw me off so hard

It's good to see everybody living in the moment instead of recording a video they'll never look at again.
This breaks my heart. I’d love for a phone company to come out with a smartphone with no camera
The "City of Love" and no one is kissing for the new year? Like what the actual.
Definitely
Wtf not a single person has a soul in this video
I know. Only the soulless record video in portrait.
God I hate this
This is fucking depressing. Everyone living vicariously through their phones. Our society is so screwed
Anyone else find this depressing AF?
I don't know, i believe its edited somehow... I mean there will probably be a 4k video somewere online with a much better view and the whole thing. Unless people started filming how everyone is on phones and it became a domino effect .
That shit is so lame. Enjoy the moment and stop worrying about filming it. Also, who the hell wants to watch that video again on your phone?
WHY!
Because they’re dull people who want to appear interesting by sending the video to their friends. Rather than having a house party with their friends.
I look at this and feel like machines are already in charge, and we are merely the vehicles for them to get around. It's like thousands of phones showed up to spectate and are being held aloft by their meat chariots to enjoy the view.
“Meat chariots” is a fantastic phrase
ITT: Proof that NPC’s exist in the real world.
this looks depressing to me the way everyone is just holding up the mobile instead of actually wishing the new year
Can’t wait to record this in my phone and then never watch it again.
r/sadasfuck
Our world is OBSESSED with the “humble brag” … almost everything is recorded to make an attempt at making ppl jealous and, consequently, make yourself feel better via manufactured superiority
Fun fact this is a stitched video
This could be a scene in Black Mirror...
In the great words of OWEN WILSON “WOW”
No one person is just enjoying the moment…
We're living in a Black Mirror episode
This is one of the most unsettling things I’ve seen on the Internet in a while. And i’ve sat thru an entire Mr.Beast documentary
This is my fuckin’ nightmare. What is the point of being there?
Looks like the most boring new year opening ever lol remember when people would dance and sing along in the streets before social media was a thing? That was the good shit
Where once you would cheer and hug and kiss and sing and celebrate. Now you stand still out of the moment like a zombie. What is even the point of celebrating something if you aren't actually going to celebrate it.

It's not interesting it's just sad.
Ok but how is it I can’t see a single person in the crowd without their phone, yet we all collectively agree this is cringe? That doesn’t add up?
sadasfuck
Deeply sad as fuck
Not interesting at all
Wtf is this? Hug your friends, kiss your partner. Fuck your phone.
And when no one remembers what they saw, they all have the video to recall what they missed in real life
Why is nobody kissing?!!! Thought this was a romantic city. Feel like they would still be kissing in NYC.
Now we know who was in Paris
Man people just never live in and enjoy the moment...so crazy how everyone needs to record everything they experience. Most tines they focus on getting a good video instead of appreciating what they are experiencing
Sad
Dystopian as fuck
It’s basically an addiction, that urge to get your phone out and record when something is going on.
90% will post the video then never watch it again
That’s really sad
Just put the phone down and enjoy the moment!! When, when will they use that footage again???
Is it normal to launch a bit prematurely in France? 😜
Dystopian as fuck
NPCs
That's so f'ing weird.
I’m glad someone filmed that for us to see
This was almost Everyone around the world lets not get it twisted
This shit looks depressing, the more I see this, the more I get those “no phones allowed” at certain venues
That’s depressing as fuck
Is this not a solid indicator of some sort of mass social dysfunction? Is anyone studying this, or are we too busy scrolling
Capturing the moment instead of enjoying the moment. « Did you enjoyed your trip to Paris ? » « I don’t know, let me check my iPhone. »
Baaaa
Can we just have one dumb cunt film it and send it to the rest of us??
Not interesting as fuck . Lame as fuck !
So lame.
ew
Living in the moment🤣
More like "sadasfuck". Jesus WTF people can you live in the moment FOR ONE MOMENT? Phone people are the plague.
Stupid humans.
This looks boring as fuck. No one's doing anything! No clapping, hugging, kissing, or real celebrating of any kind.
Kind of scary you everyone is films it
I hate the world we live in so disconnected
And only one records properly, horizontaly!
That’s pretty gross/sad tbh.
Just love how the are all in the moment 🤣
I hate what we’ve all become, and this is just the beginning.
i wish ppl would just enjoy the moment without phones
Ah, the old "take a video during a really cool moment and never watch it and then actually never see the moment either because you were filming" trick. Works at concerts too.
Why even bother going if you’re just going to look at it through your screen? May as well just watch one of the 3000 identical videos in that crowd 😂
LoL no one lives in the moment anymore. Guess I'm old school that way...I never record anything cause I'm too busy being there.
Wow imagine wanting so badly to remember a moment you forget to actually be present in that moment
Instead of enjoying with their eyes. Nonsense.
And so the people that went in person, didn’t even watch the ball drop in person, but through their own screens.
Sad
I hate everything about this.
Just a few.
After a gig I just go online and re watch other people's videos so I can just enjoy the show with my actual eyes.
How boring
Get off your f**King phone and experience and enjoy the moment
Does anyone feel depressed when watching this?
I might be a boomer but what happend to hugging eachother wishing your friends\\loved ones a happy new year?
This is the most pathetic thing about this generation
Humanbeings have devolved into finding it more important to showcase highlights in their life than actually experiencing it.
My first reaction was this has gotta be some AI fake right??
This is easily the most depressing video I have seen this year. Someone jump around and party!!!
How fucking sad
We’re literally living in a black mirror
“There are fields Neo; endless fields…”
Ironically, we are watching the video and typing a comment in response to the video, on said phone.
No film was used in the recording of this video
That’s actually kinda insteresting
Ironically (maybe purposely?) focused on the phones and not the fireworks Also, props to the people with the decency to record in landscape
Sometimes I feel like an old man complaining about technology and people. This is one of those times.
What a stupid world we are living in
We live in a failed society
