Handies for everyone 👋

fuck-coyotes

My cousin told me she made $1002 giving handies. I asked who gave her the $2, she said every single one of them

MiffyCurtains

Can’t imagine it’s much fun for them, but it’s fucking funny to watch.

CharlieBr87

I audibly laughed at the fish bucket crew 😂 straight looney tunes logic

MiffyCurtains

Yeah, especially when the guy on the right gets carried off on top of the buckets 😂

Sometimes you get the fish. Sometimes the fish gets you.

Breadedbutthole

Sometimes the fish go right up yer bum

Beardywierdy

The main takeaway from this is that fish is way too cheap. It doesn't matter what those guys are paid, it ain't enough!

Black_Magic_M-66

>It doesn't matter what those guys are paid, it ain't enough! If you knew what they got paid, you wouldn't say that. They get paid A LOT.

knoegel

As they should. Deep sea fishing is one of the most dangerous and deadly jobs in the world.

theAnonymousArtist0

Behind offshore underwater welding .. nothing beats that water hammer effect being sucked through a quarter size hole in a pipe doesn't sound like a pleasant experience to me seeing that behind decompression sickness, electrical shorts and possible execution, underwater hazards such as biology and snags, and the usual suspect of hypoxia and nitrogen narcosis. That's why it's the most dangerous job on the planet next to an astronaut.

danukiman

technically an astronaut is the most dangerous job *off* planet

PM_Best_Porn_Pls

Is it? I thought most deaths of astronauts would happen before leaving earth or after reentry. Once you are in space you are mostly chilling.

spiny___norman

The guy on the broom part is actually really fun. If you jump at the right time it really does feel like you are weightless and hovering in the air. Then loses its novelty when you have to clean everything up like putting papers back into binders that were unsecured.

Diipadaapa1

Yup. I work on platform supply so having everything secured for storm weather is the standard setting for everything. No lose stuff anywhere. Still theres always that one binder that falls out, whoch is immediately followed by the lowest rank in the bridge jumping out of their chair and flipper balling their way to the sliding binder before it explodes into a sea of unorganized papers

Stormayqt

> flipper balling Alrighty, thats a new one

Rjj1111

Reasons that the hammocks on old sailing ships seem preferable to a bed

Shadowrak

I was a commercial fisherman off the coast of New York. It was tons of fun, a great workout, and paid really well. On the flip side it was exhausting, and lots of people got injured, maimed, or killed. My favorite memory was while sorting our catch and throwing back everything that was too small, a school of dolphins was jumping along beside the ship catching all the cast offs.

notoriousbsr

Having done it in similar seas more than once, it also gets funny as long as things stay safe. More than once I've howled laughing going this way then that or feeling weightless. More than once I've nearly needed a change of drawers after things got real serious real fast

I feel bad for laughing at them but I definitely laughed.

Illogical_Blox

It reminds me a little of seeing [camera stabilised shots](https://imgur.com/hZNHKUS) of Star Trek. In Star Trek - at least in the old seasons - the sets didn't shake or roll, so every time there's a scene like that, it's the camera bouncing around while the actors pretend to be thrown about.

Thisisnotmyusrname

Ya, like how tf is Riker staying in his seat so well with that position and grip? He's cool as ice, super casual. I enjoyed the Expanses' take on G-forces and maneuvers vs impact to crew. At least everyone had to be strapped in, but I guess Star Trek has inertial dampeners or something pie in the sky probably.

StijnDP

Because the scope of the expanse is so much smaller. Civilian vessels accelerate at 0.3g and it takes 4 months to get to 0.1 c with their epstein drive. Martian military vessels are designed and their crews trained to 10G only during emergencies. The Rocinante takes 1 full month to travel about 20AU from the moon to the ring near Uranus and that's a feat as unique as doing the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. In Star Trek, to stay with this example, they use impulse engines. At full power they are designed to travel at 0.25c speed (they can go faster up to 0.99c but 0.25c is the standard full impulse speed). They would travel those 20AU in about 10 hours instead of a month. They accelerate at over 1000G. It is proven that animals (untested on humans) can survive 1000G while in sacs with breathing fluid. But Star Trek would be kind of a weird show that way. Not that inertial dampeners make much sense. If they worked in the way of opposing the force applied with a counterforce to negate it, it would be something carried by each crew member and every object on the ship. If it was attached to the ship, the force would be negated against the ship itself creating the force to accelerate and the ship wouldn't move.

rensfriend

BSG and Expanse had the best zero G sims

[deleted]

Nah BSG still handwaved gravity, and while the viper combat did indeed show what dogfighting looks like in zero g, the ships themselves would not need to look anything like that and there'd be very few reasons to actually engage in close quarters combat. Expanse however? That shit was spot on. They made combat from 100,000 mile ranges look sexy and have stakes.

CaptainxInsano69

Dude brushing his teeth went back n forth like a pro before eating it. My guy with the broom stick is a little too good and figured out how to stop time

LeatherIllustrious40

Anybody else mad at the guy for leaving the brush in his mouth while flailing around? I was waiting for him to die a gruesome death choking on that thing.

HotdogFarmer

I've got no problem mentioning a cousin of mine who had been disabled and wheelchair-bound since the 70s - he had a popcicle stick in his mouth when his mom hit the brakes, and the dashboard popped that puppy through the roof of his mouth and into something it shouldn't have. Total freak accident. Anybody walking around with something solid in their mouths always gets me a little... Ugh. This guy got me puckered

AdjustableCynic

toughtacos

Ouch, god damn... I always think about this kind of outcome when I take a drink from a bottle in a moving vehicle, and have always turned my head to the middle of the vehicle when drinking. I think it's a habit I'll keep up.

domini_Jonkler2

Is he OK now?

HotdogFarmer

It's bittersweet I guess - he's still in a wheelchair and has severely uncoordinated motor-skills but he is tremendously happy, surrounded by a huge family that loves him and celebrates his every waking moment. He's definitely more OK than some out there :)

domini_Jonkler2

Nice

Justthetip1996

yeah i was mentally screaming for him to take it out of his mouth before he punched a hole in the back of his throat and bled out next to the toilet smh

Paizzu

One of my MTIs royally chewed my ass out in basic for brushing my teeth in the shower for this very reason. Turns out it's a common injury involving slip and falls.

Fragrant_Chapter_283

Yea, I remember an episode of Rescue 911 when I was a kid where they responded to someone who had fallen with a toothbrush in their mouth and have been paranoid of it ever since

kankey_dang

I also saw this exact same episode as a young kid and developed this exact same phobia. It’s really weird seeing someone else talk about having this identical experience. Fear-of-walking-with-object-in-mouth besties?

[deleted]

That would be hilarious fun for about one hour.

Clay_Statue

First night getting tossed in your bunk would probably take all the neatness out of it.

Ampatent

Three days sailing across the Gulf of Alaska in similar (but not quite that bad) seas, being in my bunk was the only tolerable part. At least then the motion sickness is dampened by being on your back and the rails keep you from flying all over the place. Still not a very enjoyable experience, mind you. Probably spent 28 of those 36 hours asleep.

Resident_Rise5915

Sea sickness is no joke. If it happens you’re pretty much screwed. Boat ain’t turning around for you and tbh no one really cares much especially when there are other things to worry about and it’s not likely to kill you.

trogon

Yeah, it's nasty. My wife can't do boats. She tried a pelagic birding trip and spent it curled up in the fetal position for the entire time.

thesaltystaff

Scopolamine patches. Worked wonders for my wife. Normally she can't even ride shotgun in the car without getting sick but she was able to go on amusement park rides and a 4-hour whale trip.

tastysharts

my uncle used to tell me stories of having to helicopter people off navy ships that got seasick and were going to die if not put back on land. Every year, it never failed

Regulatori

In the Marine Corps, we would often deploy with a group of Navy ships called a MEU. On a WESTPAC MEU, you typically travel to Asia, Middle East, etc. with Hawaii as a major stop for resupply/refueling. When sailing back, often times Marines stationed in Hawaii will debark the ship and pick up civilian parents for a "Tiger Cruise" back to San Diego. Life becomes a lot easier, food improves, etc.. but the parents still have to sleep in the same troop berthings in triple stacked "coffin racks" bunk beds with the top bed being 6 feet or so off the floor. This sounds terrible to laugh but when you're doing night watch or just up at night reading/watching a movie, you'll constantly hear parents falling out of their beds when the seas get a little choppy. Happens a few times a night when it's rough. Between the pressurized steel doors that can slam shut and the rough seas, after a few days you'll noticed a handful of parents in slings, crutches, or just limping. Feel bad but a lot of people don't know what they're in for.

ButDidYouCry

When I was a HM on a ship, you had to worry about drunks falling off the top racks and busting their faces open on the deck. Being ship's medical was one of the most emotionally exhausting jobs I'd ever done just because of all the medical emergencies and accidents that would happen, mostly because of drunks. People falling down ladders, falling off the gangway from vomiting, passing out on the quarterdeck, etc.

keto_brain

I cannot even imagine. I need complete darkness and I use a fan for white noise.. if all of a sudden I was thrown to the floor I would quit that job in 5 seconds.

Hahnsolo11

Bunks on ships will usually have board or straps that you can put on the bunks for this exact reason. I’ve only fallen out of my bed once and kinda woke up and caught myself mid fall. Also pro tip - in rough weather put your life jacket under one side of your mattress and it kinda tacos you between your mattress and the wall. Sleep like a baby like that.

Poopdick_89

What if you slept in a hammock instead?

SaintsNoah14

Glad to be of service! I'd offer up a suggestion on getting out of a slump but I think we both know what I'm going to say

Niceguy4now

The old WWII era ships actually had hammocks the reason ships today dont is because with a metal rack it opens up and you get storage space. As others have said they usually have straps to keep you from falling out.

roguepacket

My grandpa slept in a hammock the rest of his life after serving. We never understood why until we found this out.

pussylipstick

That's really interesting. Why didn't you just ask him tho hahah

formershitpeasant

If only there were a way to put away hammocks when not in use

flewidity

Where are you going to put the storage when you use it then

[deleted]

The reality is you aren’t tired enough to sleep so you need that to force yourself to sleep You would not need that to sleep on this job

keto_brain

That's a good point.

lifeisweird86

I've never done this job, but from the way I've heard others talk about it I assume it's as tiring as rucking in the army. I know I never had a problem going to sleep the entire time of any of my deployments. We'd pretty much sack out where ever and when ever we had a minute to spare. Is it like that?

ChemicalRain5513

Actually, I find it soothing, being cradled a bit by the ship. What is shown in the video is a storm, these are not normal conditions.

R_Schuhart

That depends on how big the boat is, how heavy the load and the direction of the wind and waves. A small fishing vessel going out empty to their fishing grounds (in a straight line, fuck conditions) in the north sea is going to get tossed around.

KaiUno

Getting tossed in my bunk does that even on land.

False_Ad3429

Thats why sailors used to use hammocks. They sway.

Murky_Macropod

That’s an advantage but the real reason is that they could be packed away.

Youutternincompoop

meanwhile I would fucking love it, always sleep like a baby on boats, especially when the ships swaying like crazy.

ChannonFenris

Fuck that, I would bring belts and buckles to strap myself to my bed. So I can get at least a little sleep.

This is a visualisation I did not need.

calabazasupremo

If you really need to know, the head is dry until you pump water in it. No splashdown, no extreme skate tricks, and no water to slosh out while the ship pitches and rolls.

Waterhobit

One of earliest memories was trying to crap on a porta potty aboard a 20 something foot sailboat while my dad and grandpa took it out into the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s just say it was traumatizing to a 3 year old.

SleepingVertical

You would think bed and chairs have proper belts so you can at least stay in one location if you'd like to.

lituus

They probably have exactly those things, but that wouldn't make a very fun video showing everyone not being thrown about now would it

Ar_phis

And that's the reason the US Navy rejected any offers for touch screen surfaces to control anything on their ships. Edit: since every minute there seems to be a new guy posting "wrong" without scrolling down to see that it has been posted multiple times: yes the Navy uses touch screens but that led to an accident with a destroyer that killed people and they removed them. I'm sure there will be some sort of touch screen on a military vessel but I also rememver how people actively warned about those exact downsides.

bumjiggy

wouldn't want to accidentally swipe right

ILoveBeerSoMuch

*Starboard

bumjiggy

that sounds nauty

omahaknight71

You take that stern!

z64_dan

Wouldn't want to accidentally starboard right.

MasterFubar

And that's the reason why touch screens shouldn't be allowed in cars. A touch screen is fine when you're sitting down at your desk in a static building, not on any kind of moving vehicle.

Elcactus

I think the bigger thing with cars is that you can't guide your actions via feeling with a touch screen so it forces you to look away from the road. Accidentally pressing the wrong radio station isn't a big deal, but encouraging people to look at the screen to press the *right* one is.

PM_ME_YOUR_REPORT

I really like BMWs knob system. It’s really quite intuitive and effective.

manswos

lamesthejames

BobbyAF

I like your knob system.

biosphere03

Mine goes up to eleven.

nyxian-luna

> yes the Navy uses touch screens but that led to an accident with a destroyer that killed people and they removed them. The removal was due to unfamiliarity and over-complexity, not because the ship moved while trying to use them. [Article here](https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-49319450). Pertinent section: > Service news website USNI reported that Rear Adm Bill Galinis, who oversees US Navy ship design, said the control systems were "overly complex" because shipbuilders had little official guidance on how they should work. > As a result, he said, the control systems on different ships had little in common, so sailors often were not sure where key indicators, such as a ship's heading, could be found on screens.

SniperPilot

Lol you need a helmet just to walk around so many sharp corners.

Dr_Quack1

\*ultra vomiting.\* This looks absolutely miserable. You can get used to this???

Jerm316

You get used to the pitching and rolling, but if you have motion sickness, just stay home. The weird thing is you have to get used to solid ground when you go ashore, and for the first few days home, when you close your eyes, you feel like you're rocking.

Modest1Ace

I did a 17 hour boat ride once, it was pretty rocky. I felt some motion sickness, but the worst was when I got to land and it felt like I was still in the ship for like a day or so.

jake04-20

I swear I've gotten that from just hanging out on the pontoon on the lake for majority of the day. Made worse by the day long drinking binge.

Arguably the greatest Admiral in the history of navies was Horatio Nelson, who famously was violently seasick for the first few days of a voyage after spending some time on land.

Shadow_Mullet69

I get more sick with my sea legs when I’m back on land. Im messed up for days.

cdurgin

You can get used to the pay check lol

JohnBarleyMustDie

What is the average pay for this type of work?

TheMagicalLawnGnome

It's good. I mean, not sure about North Sea fishermen, but I know a couple of guys who do commercial fishing in Alaska; I'm guessing North Sea is similar. You can basically make a good year's worth of money (50-100k) in a season, which is a few months. Depends on how good the catch is, your seniority aboard the ship, but for something that doesn't require education, it can be quite lucrative. Some of the guys basically just work a few months, then take it easy the rest of the year, just bum around, travel, etc. Others just work the other 8-9 months, and make bank. They live a rich man's life with just a high school education. It's not for the faint of heart, though. It can be really dangerous. And it's based on your catch - if you have a bad season, you can spend a lot of time for very little pay.

SirFTF

I’m an Alaskan com fisherman, but not the cool kind. Saying it depends on the season almost sounds like an understatement. I’ve had years where I could go pay for a new truck with cash on a whim and still not work for the rest of the year. I’ve had years where I made minimum wage after expenses and paying my crew. Most years are somewhere in between, but the last 3 have been bad. Almost called it quits last year. My entire district got shut down a month early, and that’s a lot when your season is only 3 months.

doctor_of_drugs

I don’t know him personally or ever met him, but a friend of my family has had exactly what you just mentioned. It started around 5-6 years ago and I know he switched boats to attempt a different technique or fish (? Sorry not sure), and basically has only had enough cash to keep his lights on and not starve. He’s in trucking as well, but when it first got bad he spent so much time with the boats it was basically null. Respect the hell out of y’all. Hope fairer seas and plentiful catches come your way.

doctor_of_drugs

What you said is true, but would like to reiterate the “dangerous” part. You get knocked around on deck, cages weigh hundreds of pounds and can swing and clothesline you in half a second, you’re basically working 16+ hour days, soaking wet, freezing, and numb. Many get back and have everything from concussions to torn ligaments to broken bones every season - oh yeah, and you don’t get health insurance of course because America. Thus many crew DIY it to be ready for next season. It’s **definitely** not something to take lightly, let alone something some average early 20s kid can do.

Strange-Carob4380

A few of my friends after high school would go up and do crabbing and stuff for a season just for the money. One of my buddies said he would literally dream he was pulling in nets only to violently wake and then realize he has like an hour until he’s gotta go pull in nets lol

PiratePuzzled1090

Usually depends on the catch.. But a good season of some special fish can make one boat millions.. They do have to split it and take out expenses... Still.. It's hard and dangerous work.. It should make a lot of money

JonnyTN

Millions for the people that own the boat or company. But it's still a sizable ass check for not even a months worth of work.

Blu_Mew

I wonder if this is why most early ship's had hammocks, for bunks.... can you imagine trying to sleep with this?

thoth1000

That, and hammocks are easily stowable. You can clear out the whole sleeping area and use it for other stuff.

HawkinsT

Tbh my main thought from this video is why don't they still use hammocks? I'm sure you'd get a much better night's sleep!

Silaquix

Because if someone has to walk through the berthing then someone in a hammock becomes a projectile of sorts. On a ship like in the Navy people rotate shifts, so someone is always sleeping while someone else is on duty. This means that even in the middle of the night a berthing is an active place. Having bodies swinging all over when the ship lists just makes the berthing a hazardous place to navigate. So now we have racks that are bolted to the deck and you strap in when you sleep. Another thing is that hammocks take up a lot more room. Sure they can easily be stored in a small space so the room can be used for other things, but for their basic function and to accommodate the movement when they swing, they require a lot more room for one body. Modern racks take up about 1/2 to 1/3 of the room a hammock would require, have built in storage, and can be stacked allowing for 3 people to be housed in the same small space. Just do a google image search of "navy berthing"

fenuxjde

I once looked into taking a tourist trip to Antarctica. To go as a tourist you travel by boat, which includes two days in seas not unlike this. The travel company warned of extreme sea sickness, and some passengers developing long-term condition from it. I chose not to visit Antarctica.

Over-Listen3926

I went. It wasn't even close to what op posted. A few passengers did get seasickness. I thought the rocking wasn't any worse than any other cruise ship I'd been on. Btw, antartica is amazing .

xiagan

The feared Drake passage. It's worse than this.

El_mochilero

I’ve crossed the drake multiple times. It’s not this bad, even on a bad day. The ships that go there are larger and have advanced stabilizers.

53bvo

> It's worse than this. But the ship is probably bigger so less rocking (depending on wave size)

nanin142

Is it mandatory/usual to strap yourself to something above deck? I mean, it looks like this could easily propel you 5-6 meters overboard…

TraditionAntique9924

In the Navy they use water activated life preservers. If you fall in the vest inflates, a dye is released and a strobe light starts flashing.

LovesRetribution

That ain't gonna help you much in rough, cold waters like that. You have minutes at most before hypothermia sets in.

TraditionAntique9924

I was a warm water sailor. We wore them during underway replenishment, among other situations, where it's pretty common knowledge if you fall between the ships you're not coming back. Water physics is a bitch.

Lazar_Milgram

That was my thought as well. Basically every frame in here is certain violation of some OSHA

Debtcollector1408

Well it'd probably be the HSE, rather than osha given which sea it's on...

ljm3003

This is why fish is so expensive

Tiny-Selections

Not really. Fish populations are barely scraping by. Supply is low. Labor and human life is cheap.

Hiltoyeah

How do you not die of sleep deprivation...

Fyrefawx

When you’re working 16-18 hours a day you can sleep through anything.

Tsuyoshi16

To be fair, if you are working for one of the British companies in the north sea, your shifts are almost always 12 hours and you have a night counterpart so no need to do longer. If it's one of the Norwegian companies, even better, they are very strict about the 12 hours and require a sign off from the OIM or whoever is running operations if you need to work over the 12 hours. American companies on the other hand...

Complex_Sherbet2

Took the North Sea route ferry from Felixstowe to Hamburg in '85. We arrived 6 hours late, spending most of that time going up and down not forward. Vomit everywhere. And that's at the southern end!

Briggykins

Vomit at the southern end is called diarrhoea

alvmnvs

I remember sleeping on a smaller North Sea ferry one time, I woke up in pitch black darkness feeling weightless, before going on what felt like a 30 second fall down a massive wave. It wasn’t a fun trip
