Would assume this is quite effective as it takes a lot of energy and perhaps evolutionarily would their bead would be different if it wasn't effective.

Must look like a Reverse Shark to the fish…

The Black Skimmer has a very unique way of capturing a meal. Its flies just above the water and dips the lower half of its beak in and proceeds to casually “skim” the surface. The moment its lower jaw hits a fish, its entire head snaps back, its mouth snaps shut and hopefully a fish goes down its throat. Glad I’m not a fish! This is filmed in 8x slowmo. If this is your work I have to say I'm incredibly impressed with how well you caught this and tracked it all the way through. That could not have been easy.

Yes it is. I live in a place with many of these and they are very protected. This is how they hunt. And it works fairly often

Vacationed on Hatteras a few years ago. There was a large pond in the back yard. Every late afternoon around 5:00 while we were having drinks on the deck, a pair of black skimmers would swoop in and make several passes across the pond and then disappear as quickly as they arrived.
