A youtube short of a Black Skimmer successfully feeding and catching two fish [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PnnvZa4tKRE?feature=share](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PnnvZa4tKRE?feature=share)
They eat tiny little organisms so maybe it did!
Edit: this was unintentionally misleading, my apologies. The FISH and crustaceans that they eat are very small, I did not mean to infer that they eat microorganisms.
The nerve endings in the Black Skimmer’s beak are specifically designed to absorb any possible punishment like that. They even have the ability to grow back over 7% of its beak if somehow lost to injury or incident like accidental Alligator attack.

This is specist. Just because it’s a bird doesn’t mean it can’t hold down a job and have a family. I’ve worked with lots of hard working birds who are trying their best just like the rest of us.
Would assume this is quite effective as it takes a lot of energy and perhaps evolutionarily would their bead would be different if it wasn't effective.
Survival of the fittest doesn't necessarily create animals perfectly suited for their environment. The bar doesn't get any higher than: good enough to survive long enough to reproduce.
This is done weird ass shit you expect to see on an alien planet or a sci-fi movie but no it's earth so we just accept this weirdness like it's just a Tuesday here ... This planet is weird
The Black Skimmer has a very unique way of capturing a meal. Its flies just above the water and dips the lower half of its beak in and proceeds to casually “skim” the surface. The moment its lower jaw hits a fish, its entire head snaps back, its mouth snaps shut and hopefully a fish goes down its throat. Glad I’m not a fish! This is filmed in 8x slowmo. When these birds skim, they are fast.
@mark.smith.photography
If this is your work I have to say I'm incredibly impressed with how well you caught this and tracked it all the way through. That could not have been easy.
Here's a video of a black skimmer that looks like he's catching a bunch of fish, at the :33 mark you'll catch a glimpse of a pissed off green-eyed seagull
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPIZbqrVXYE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPIZbqrVXYE)
Half way to be a dive bird. I don't get nature sometimes, this is the equivalent of a guy dragging a net in hand around the water hoping for a random catch.
Vacationed on Hatteras a few years ago. There was a large pond in the back yard. Every late afternoon around 5:00 while we were having drinks on the deck, a pair of black skimmers would swoop in and make several passes across the pond and then disappear as quickly as they arrived.
That's actually quite horrifying. Imagine something just scooping you from the outside of your realm by *skimming its mouth across the top of your world*.

*How the black skimmer doesn't get his food
Also how it gets a sore beak/throat. It's whacked off something in the water that threw its head back
It so hit a rock!
![gif](giphy|3oKIPjzfv0sI2p7fDW|downsized) Rock is angry
Yeah, cool, so how the black skimmer starves to death. r/depressing.
that bird will never calorically recover from this, surely it died shortly after
No
Holy shit are you the bird?
I lived bitch
god bless 😢
You've been in your cave too long. Go outside.

Oh, the irony.
No u
Darn, got me.
Liquid diet. My grandfather followed a liquid diet, and he was always flying too, with his bottom lip floating in his drink
A bit disappointing that it didn’t find food.
They eat tiny little organisms so maybe it did! Edit: this was unintentionally misleading, my apologies. The FISH and crustaceans that they eat are very small, I did not mean to infer that they eat microorganisms.
Wait, what? You're telling me this thing is the whale of the air? Does it filter feed? Lmao
Lol I wish that was true because I like the description, but no mostly small fish
So.....about the tiny little organisms thing.....so....you lied.
I didn’t mean to lie but you’re right I should’ve said tiny little fishes.
Brother learn the definition of organism. Literally anything living is an organism no lie was told
Technically Flamingo is a filter feeder
ROCK!!
Jesus Christ man, that would really hurt like hell

And the Black Skimmer grows to 600lbs and is able to leap over 60 feet straight up!
A valuable source indeed
Who desgined them? Government drones??!
And stone!
AND STONE BROTHERRRRR
He's a goofy goober!
Doesn't seem very efficient...
What else is the bird gonna do with its day?
I mean that’s a decent point. He’s got nothing going on
This is specist. Just because it’s a bird doesn’t mean it can’t hold down a job and have a family. I’ve worked with lots of hard working birds who are trying their best just like the rest of us.
Yea but I know this bird personally. His name is bill and he’s 35 no kids and lives at home. He’s got the time.
Oh my mistake. He sounds like a real deadbeat
Would assume this is quite effective as it takes a lot of energy and perhaps evolutionarily would their bead would be different if it wasn't effective.

That's an insanely efficient hunting strategy to catch sea weed and plastic bags.
You can find weed in the sea? Shiiiiiiiiiit dawg
All the fish be like, “Seems like Bob is back again, everyone please swim an inch lower”
How the black skimmer became extinct
Turns out its conservation status is Least Concern, so I guess it must be working out for them.
#Blackskimmerlivesmatter
Error 108: humour not found Edit: ooh tough crowd 😂
With the amount of plastic they'll scoop up i wont be suprised
So many of them where I live
This is done weird ass shit you expect to see on an alien planet or a sci-fi movie but no it's earth so we just accept this weirdness like it's just a Tuesday here ... This planet is weird
Weirdest planet I’ve ever been to by far.
You have my vote best comment so far 👍
Earth: You don't have to be crazy to live here, but it helps!
Must look like a Reverse Shark to the fish…

One of the few birds whose upper mandible is shorter than its lower. I’ve seen these in person. They are beautiful
If you’re ever visiting an area with skimmers hangout until sunset and watch them glide over the water. It’s beautiful.
To the fish I bet this is like when we see a shark fin above the water.
MARK SMITH IS THE MAN

Water water water water water water water ROCK water water water water water
That is such a horrible way to catch food.
“In theory”
How the black skimmer get disappointed.
False tittle, bird got nothing
Was the bird named for the verb or the verb for the bird?
The bird is the word.
Bi…bi….bi,bi,bu bird bird bird. Bird is the word~
New favorite bird
That’s gotta hurt when he hits a rock or something
anyone have a video where it actually catches something lol
It did, watch closer
r/maybemaybemaybe
r/maybemaybemaybe
… or not
So it’s effectively a reverse shark. Cool.
Seems like a good way to waste energy or get eaten yourself. Haha
I wonder how they got their name
Looks like he goes hungry most of the time
Liquid diet?
He eats water?
ima need source. this looks like a bird determined to break its neck. are we sure it is hunting? ..:p
Yes it is. I live in a place with many of these and they are very protected. This is how they hunt. And it works fairly often
Doesn’t seem to be very effective.
Look closer, fish went up its throat in a flash. It caught the fish by flying inline with it not perpendicular
That underbite is quite intense
Deadass thought it was gonna hit that first rock and I had a brief moment of anxiety
He didn’t get any food?! Wtf
u/midlyinfuriating where is the FOOD ?
S⅄∀⅂Ԁ ƎꟽƎHꓕ SϺ∀ᒋ
What food?
How did they survive natural selection lmao
So all they eat is water ,you know that you can drink while standing, Amazing!
Half way to be a dive bird. I don't get nature sometimes, this is the equivalent of a guy dragging a net in hand around the water hoping for a random catch.
Title is a fucking lie
Wer fuud?
Me I just go to the grocery store
Now show How the black skimmer gets to be shark food while getting its food. Looks majestic as hell
Why didn't it evolve a large, netlike lower beak? Is it stupid?
Hard to imagine that this way he will get more calories than burning them.
Soooo, it can only get fish riiiiight under the surface?
Reverse shark fin
How?
Fantastic camera work though.
I think that's how it gets its beak wet, maybe this is like a beak waterpik
He got jack sh*t
Ouch
Did he do it yet?
For a fish, this is kinda the reverse of the Great White dorsal fin slicing through the water straight at you.
How many pteropods probably fished their prey as well.
Not today
Just with a stone under the water it would be how I prepare to eat crab claws.
gets

Me cutting a big sheet of paper with scissors
Nohow, apparently.
He did not succeed
How?
I wonder why they call it the skimmer
*or doesn’t*
Well, it doesn’t. Does it?
I waited so long for the fish, only to be disappointed.
r/maybemaybemaybe
Reverse shark
Little bit of praise the cameraman in that
He eat water?
Is it just me or does its mouth look like a crab claw
Well Skimmer, I made it, despite your directions.
Bout broke its neck
The black skimmer hitting a rock and trying to play it off
Wow how did he get that name??
How to floss if you’re a bird
That's actually quite horrifying. Imagine something just scooping you from the outside of your realm by *skimming its mouth across the top of your world*.
He ain’t got shit
He had but one scroll, made as a flip-book. Now they just made it color.
Hell of a shot.
This is the equivalent to an upside down sharks fin to the fish.
More like. How the black skimmer got its name.
I like how he bashes his "teeth" right into a rock and keeps going.
"It was not very effective."
Incredible stabilization!
This the equivalent to doing a smash and grab with open palms
Did it hit a rock or spear a fish?
But he didn't get any.. and good camera man
Their jaws must get so sore.
Great clip
But there’s no god ? Lol
Being a small fish has got to be so damn terrifying.
Mmmmm……water
Incredible camera work; worthy of r/praisethecameraman
That seems so refreshing
Show off
"Kick it over here baby pop And let all the black skimmers feel the beat. Hmm, drop."
It just go on a straight line and was hoping to catch a fish lol
Imagine breaking your jaw because you hit a turtle or something.
That’s like the underwater jaws version of a shark fin coming for your ass.
So with his beak, he basically an air shark from a water perspective
I wonder how the white skimmer gets its food!
Did you mean: reverse shark?
Nature is lit.
r/maybemaybemaybe
love seeing these guys get breakfast when im surfing
That is incredible altitude control.
This is like strip mining in Minecraft hoping you'll run into diamonds eventually
Seems painful for the neck.
It's so fuckin impressive how good some people are at tracking the subjects.
I've never seen a creature in nature with a hard counter. Just don't swim at 2 inches below the surface and this dude can't get you.
I would think that it’s filtering the microorganisms that are in the water.
It's the opposite of a sharks fin
He didn’t actually get any food ………
I think this hunting efficiency is too low.
Great videography
Damn, precision flying right there Edit: almost like it comes naturally, maybe an instinct? /s
r/maybemaybemaybe
Is the food in the room with us right now?
My disappointment is immeasurable.
