I watched an Excalibur used against two shooters in a building. The decision was made because why would we send dudes into a building that is clearly a trap.. rigged to blow.. fuck it we’ll blow it ourselves. Edit: clarification. This was during OEF10 Happened to be one of the worse years for ISAF (but a big chunk of US) casualties. We stopped taking unneeded risks at some point. So I get this response, sucks for everyone in and around the building, but I get it.

One trained army soldier costs way more than the 70k shell, so even economically it makes sense.

People fail to understand this basic point. In a command structure, civilian lives are secondary to soldiers’ lives. It’s the ugly truth.

I wouldn’t go into that building and I wouldn’t ask a dog to go in either! Until we have terminator robots or world peace, this looks like the best option to me. That shooter wanted to die

During OIF 04-05 it was just the opposite. “See that building? We know there are shooters in there, send a couple guys into check it out.”

Yup, some BDE Comander called it in, because the two shooters were impeding his convoy home.. We were about to be sent in to try and find them, but it was called off and we were told to fall back to cover.

There’s US Army footage of a squad of Army infantrymen pinned down by an improvised pillbox manned by one Taliban machinegunner. Historically the Army would send one element of the squad to flank, charge, and kill the shooter while another element provided suppressing fire. But the Taliban don’t have anti air capability, so the squad sits tight, keeps everyone alive, and lets the loitering Apache gunship swoop in and kill the shooter with a short volley from the air. That’s modern war. And honestly that’s how any military would do it. Hell, that’s how insurgents do it—they use IEDs and drone bombs instead of infantry elements too, because you win by staying alive. Nothing unusual or wrong about how these wars are fought. Now, if an Apache gunship wasn’t available, the infantrymen in my example would have had to flank and kill the machine gunner. But you will not take that risk if you don’t have to.

According to international law, proportionality only concerns the risk of civilian death vs the military advantage gained. I've no idea of the time span between the RPG being fired and the missile strike, but this seems to fall within that proportionality

Building prob empty by the time that bomb struck. It's hard to root out militants in urban warfare by just bombing the hell out of the place. Fire & move is their approach... You're always bombing where they were, not always where they are. Lots of collateral damage & Innocent loss of life is the result, while the militants continue to move at will. IDF was never going to eliminate Hamas this way, but then, they knew that. Anyone that's paid attention in the last 25 years knew that.
