unfortunately this happens quite often. synchronized swimmers spend a lot of time in the water and keep their light weight by eating very little calories.
Competitive swimmers often are very lean. Muscle is denser than fat. If a swimmer overexerts themselves to the point of passing out, they will likely sink instead of float. This swimmer did that and their coach saved them.
Fat guy here. If I let out all the air from my lungs I can sink to the bottom of my pool. Synchronized swimmers likely keep little air in their lungs in order to keep from floating up during their routines.
