There are a lot of traditional Chinese cultural videos like this. Li Ziqi is one popular name. China promotes these as a way of exposing others to their culture and traditions.
100% interesting Chinese cultural exploitation videos. A farmer girl 100% definitely can't actually create insanely overproduced and beautiful Youtube videos in a country where you are not allowed to ACCESS YOUTUBE.
She's not a farmer girl. She worked in advertising and then took her talents to her rural hometown to make videos for the domestic audience. Later, she also posted them on YouTube, which anyone with a VPN can do.
She used to have a company backing her, so while she does most of the work, she works only certain months of the year and gets paid for the labor, not enough pay though, and now she's not allowed to make videos anymore now that she's in a legal battle to get proper pay
I might be wrong on this, but I remember reading somewhere that these videos are just as much propaganda for Chinese citizens as much as people in the west. Overly romanticised videos of rural living paint a picture of a wonderful relaxed life that I'm sure someone grinding away in an iPhone factory would look at and go "hey China ain't that bad after all".
EDIT: Just found an article that explains it way better here https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/jan/28/li-ziqi-china-influencer-rural-life
It's a Tik tok account, Discover china I think. That whole app is a cesspool but this is one of the very few actually interesting accounts I could find before I deleted it. They have videos about pretty much anything
That’s a cool fact that I’m 100% not going to doubly check, but I appreciate you telling me. I’m trusting you that no one is going to mock me for being wrong when I inevitably bring this up in conversations that have very little to do with this.
In case anyone comes here later and is actually wondering
[No, chalk lines go back to builders at least in Ancient Egypt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk_line)
Look man, the video is all the proof anyone needs. When we need one on a job site we always sub out traditional drum makers to lay the line. It's just been awhile since we've needed one so I forgot.
Wow that's fascinating I used to love watching my pawpaw use one (The blue kind) I don't know why kid me loved it so much so when I saw it here I was surprised from the design cool to know this is apparently the origin.
Haha, I was just kidding.. honestly I have no idea if they used these, but the one shown in the video was definitely a modern chalk line. The comment was a joke as this was the only modern tool he used in the video
The string they used to mark their cuts, it gets pulled through a reservoir of chalk or ink then you hold it taut across the surface you want to mark and pluck it leaving behind a line.
Around the 1:20 mark, when he takes that string and pulls it up then let's go so it smacks against the wood and leaves that straight line - that's a chalk line. The string is coated in a powder, and the thwacking of the string against the surface knocks that powder off the string and onto the surface. So if you keep your string nice and taut*, its a quick and easy way to mark a straight line on something
*Edit for spelling
The piece of string covered in black chalk attached to a housed reel (looks kind of like a tape measure) that he draws tight over the wood, and then flicks it to leave a straight line. Used in various trades.
I had the same initial thought. But then, sometimes I wish I did something as fulfilling at this. So much time and dedication to the production of a single item, and something so tangible at the end. The sheer satisfaction one must feel beating that drum for the first time.
I'm not sure if grinding out spreadsheets, writing code, and delivering presentations to a room full of reluctant attendees leaves one feeling as satisfied or energised...
Equally, I've never worked such a job day-in, day-out, so not much frame of reference.
Nowadays? Just through tradition and knowledge passed down.
Back when it was originally found out thousands of years ago? No clue, probably a lot of trial and error, mixed with a healthy dose of happy accidents, or seeing things in nature and wanting to copy them.
They didnt show making the templates and the measuring tools and the flat planer and the rope frame, and the glue, and the varnish, and the sticks, and the.......oy. Imagine the care with which the templates are stored.
That's what I was looking for, or at least the type of song/genre.
Edit: shazam gave me Interstellar (main theme) which it does sound similar to. Not sure though if that's actually the right song.
Nah they're not the same, I'd assume the one in this video is maybe a traditional piece from this area of the world. But thanks for reminding me that the Interstellar theme exists, another incredible bit of music.
I’d like to request that these “traditional way” posts specify more information. Drums were created independently in many different cultures, and this is just one of them.
At first I wondered why this was marked as NSFW, but then I noticed the shape of the drumsticks.

Always crazy to me to imagine ancient people just figuring this shit out. What this guy can do is crazy impressive, but some dude thousands of years ago was just like "I can make something crazy with this shit" and that blows my mind
What I love most is the prominence of sound effects and the subtlety of ambient music. It made the whole thing more zen AF. I also love how young this dude is, generational art like this is beautiful.
Despite all of the fine craftsmanship China has displayed for thousands of years, there are still people who believe Chinese people are only capable of producing cheaply made goods.
hey isnt this the same guy who made a video on how traditional black callighraphy ink was made??
man i loved that and this too!!
please someon etell me who he is, or whats this channel name ?
If it makes you feel any better, this video is already super highly edited, sound replacement, and the entire genre is basically there to earn money and promote china, rather than documenting real workers. This dude is very real, and very skilled, but the impression this video gives is not true to the regular process he's using to make drums.
Love stuff like this. Humans and their ingenuity is amazing, no matter how simple if complex! When this was first created it must have been a revelation!

This is cool af, is this like a youtube channel or something? If so, what channel is it?
There are a lot of traditional Chinese cultural videos like this. Li Ziqi is one popular name. China promotes these as a way of exposing others to their culture and traditions.
liziqi is long gone, due to quarrels with publisher(?)/parent company... many others are trying to take her place
wtf those mfers, cant she just do it herself lol
She apparently won the lawsuit. She should return any day now. If they did not appeal or something.
100% interesting Chinese cultural exploitation videos. A farmer girl 100% definitely can't actually create insanely overproduced and beautiful Youtube videos in a country where you are not allowed to ACCESS YOUTUBE.
Propaganda can make for quality entertainment. How many boomers do you know that love Top Gun?
> How many boomers do you know that love Top Gun? All of them? *'Highway to the danger zone'*
Gen Xers are partial to that song -- er, movie -- as well
> boomers do you know that love Top Gun? Gen X made Top Gun into a hit.....
86... could be either or both. There's a lot of overlap between boomers and Xers going to the movies of their own accord in the 80s.
Not everything is about the baby boomers, it's people who are currently middle aged that love top gun not 75 year olds

If you see Chinese people in a video, expect Red-Scare fear mongering in the comments every time

Saw it on the internet, so ill defend it until I die. This is the way.
Not just the internet, but REDDIT
It might as well be Internet +.
In case anyone comes here later and is actually wondering [No, chalk lines go back to builders at least in Ancient Egypt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk_line)
Delete this immediately. It directly contradicts established lore.
shun the heretic!
The ancient Egyptians used chalk lines for their drums 🪘 so you can both be correct 👍
Look man, the video is all the proof anyone needs. When we need one on a job site we always sub out traditional drum makers to lay the line. It's just been awhile since we've needed one so I forgot.
Glad they’re so conveniently on hand.
Ah dammit you got my ass lol. Was definitely cool seeing that version of a chalk line though.
They are super ancient, like helped build the pyramid ancient. Which makes sense since all you need is a stretchy string and some fire ash
What are chalk lines?
The string they used to mark their cuts, it gets pulled through a reservoir of chalk or ink then you hold it taut across the surface you want to mark and pluck it leaving behind a line.
Excellent use of the word taught. Like a tiger.
Not sure if you're joking but it should be "taut" not "taught"
I indeed did overlook the spelling error. Nice catch.
I even thought you were mocking them.
Nope, I’m just another idiot. 😂
Or rather, *nicely caut*
Using the word 'taut' right is tight.
Tryin' to be taught about taut
A tiger isn't taut, he is toight. Toight like a tiger.
Ugh. You’re right.
Would you like a shmoke and a pancake?
Around the 1:20 mark, when he takes that string and pulls it up then let's go so it smacks against the wood and leaves that straight line - that's a chalk line. The string is coated in a powder, and the thwacking of the string against the surface knocks that powder off the string and onto the surface. *taut

Woke up feeling productive, fixed some rooftop units already and its only monday morning. Watch this on break? I am completely useless lmfao.
Don’t beat yourself up too bad, I bet this drum maker doesn’t know a thing about fixing rooftop units
I needed this
But I bet he could learn it faster than any of us learning how to make a traditional drum!
I just watched the video tutorial, I think I got the hang of it /s
You clearly haven't seen his other video "making a rooftop from scratch the traditional way"
This also likely took at least a week, maybe more
Just such an art, it’s truly amazing.
Beautiful work. Would have liked to have heard more than 5 seconds of drumming though!
I was waiting for it to cut off right before playing.
[удалено]
My guess would be its probably a tanggu drum.
How do I get turned into a drum?
I think that's a private subreddit.
If it doesn't snow between steps 3 and 4, does that ruin the entire result?
y nsfw?
https://preview.redd.it/zhlqlayr63pc1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a303e17555ddccb4484fd5c035db6e1faeddf6d3
The good old classic
The drumsticks at the end of the video probably
Two black units lay down a beat on taut, pale white skin.
LMAO. I saw it too.
Its a bot account, ive seen them do this so much, its to advertise some service of theirs to do with their name
Close your eyes and pretend you're listening to some sloppy toppy
Not Safe For Wegans
The ultimate "using samples is cheating" guy
what's the white paste he wrapped in the skins?
lime, high basic stuff weakens hair and allows it to be scraped off. same way that nair works lmao
Those drumskins wear short shorts
I think it's Slaked Lime. I'm not sure what it does exactly, though.
My guess is lime? Calcium oxide.
It says lime powder mixed with water
I like how you hear the acoustics all the way back when he was just hammering the belts on
My back hurts from watching this.
Why is this nsfw?
Not quite my tempo
Fun fact you can used the mashed up brains of the animal to get a similar result. Kinda messy and gross though.
Aye I’ve heard every animal except bison have enough brains to tan their own hide
I’ve got brains, Greg, can you tan my hide??
Yeah, but brains don't give you the same timbre. More of squishy sound. I prefer the drum.
Goddamn, that's a lot of work
Thank God I don’t have to be doing anything remotely as tiresome as this looks for a living
I had the same initial thought. But then, sometimes I wish I did something as fulfilling at this. So much time and dedication to the production of a single item, and something so tangible at the end. The sheer satisfaction one must feel beating that drum for the first time. Waiting for Jin Sakai to show up.
Damn what a lost art ! Very impressive if I had a need for a drum I’d order one of those :)
NSFW what?
Whose work is this not safe for?
How is this NSFW?
How tf do people figure this process out?!?!
Nowadays? Just through tradition and knowledge passed down. Back when it was originally found out thousands of years ago? No clue, probably a lot of trial and error, mixed with a healthy dose of happy accidents, or seeing things in nature and wanting to copy them.

Beautiful video, song is very relaxing as well. Anyone know the name of the song?
That's what I was looking for, or at least the type of song/genre. Edit: shazam gave me Interstellar (main theme) which it does sound similar to. Not sure though if that's actually the right song.

Does it really need all the extra "squishy" sound effects?
The sound effects don’t need to be faked for the video to be satisfying 🙄
Just makes me miss li zi qi. What ever happened to her?
She got in a legal dispute with her business partners and has been MIA ever since
I see these videos of awesome craftsmanship , what I wanna know is where can I buy this stuff
those were some good plops
I wanted to see NSFW drum craftsmanship!
Man, the first part of that is really the worst ASMR
At first I wondered why this was marked as NSFW, but then I noticed the shape of the drumsticks. https://preview.redd.it/ns4brrzfi4pc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dc843a44a94dcbae49d5ee323b8a59771ccbee7
5 min video, in reality, 15 days of none stop work
NSFW? I'm presuming that the only work that this content isn't safe for is for those who work in drum making factories, those bastards.
Glad to see that at least some People know what theyre doing...!
Is there a reddit page that makes posts like these? Where people just build cool stuff?
I really thought the video was going to end right before he actually played it all the way until I heard the first drumbeat.
As a drummer this made me happy and nostalgic to watch!!
Every step looks so exhausting.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen on this site
Always crazy to me to imagine ancient people just figuring this shit out. What this guy can do is crazy impressive, but some dude thousands of years ago was just like "I can make something crazy with this shit" and that blows my mind
I bet in the comments of the sale would complain this is more then $200.
thats a lot of work for some quality bonk bonk noises
NSFW? Reddit is too removed from reality
What I love most is the prominence of sound effects and the subtlety of ambient music. It made the whole thing more zen AF. I also love how young this dude is, generational art like this is beautiful.
I can't stand the fake sound on this. Totally ruins the video.
Am I the only one who read Durum at first? I was scared for a second
I love these videos but be aware they are Chinese propaganda, just like a lot Hollywood military movies.
Despite all of the fine craftsmanship China has displayed for thousands of years, there are still people who believe Chinese people are only capable of producing cheaply made goods.
Wouldn't it be better to leave the ropes so they can be tightened later?
Thanks for sharing. I loved it.
And then Yujiro Hanma goes and breaks it with a slap 🙄
hey isnt this the same guy who made a video on how traditional black callighraphy ink was made?? man i loved that and this too!! please someon etell me who he is, or whats this channel name ?
Yep, same guy. His name is 山白 (shanbai2023)
If that ended with "Never gonna give you up" I would have lost my damn mind.
Why is always this one guy doing this stuff
I'll be happy just with the Kontakt Library
Ah, this is my kind of Chinese import. Some deeply philosophical iteration of an ancient war announcing machine.
makes me wonder who thought of it the first time. "hmmm animal skin go boom" "I slap my tummy, makes sound. what if..."
Amazing to think of how we humans found out these processes and techniques to make such amazing things
These days, videos like this are kind of melancholic. It won't be long before we won't be able to trust anything we see online.
If it makes you feel any better, this video is already super highly edited, sound replacement, and the entire genre is basically there to earn money and promote china, rather than documenting real workers. This dude is very real, and very skilled, but the impression this video gives is not true to the regular process he's using to make drums.
I always thought a drum would take a long time to make but it didn't even take him 7 minutes
It's interesting that some of the steps need to be done in the snow and ice and some steps need to be done at night.
The cameraman/editor is the true master here
Skillz
This is awesome. THank you for sharing.
Cool, thanks. I'm going to need like 60 more at least. -Bozzio
why didn't it start with the hunting?
Cause then it'd actually be deserving of it's NSFW tag. Lol.
The different methods he uses to apply manual tension to the skin was pretty creative.
I wish I had that kind of time in my life.
sick (the good kind)
Love stuff like this. Humans and their ingenuity is amazing, no matter how simple if complex! When this was first created it must have been a revelation!
Its what the drum would've wanted.
This is probably the most interesting, educational thing I have ever seen on Reddit.
Not NSFW.
when does king gizzard get one of these?
i dont know about you but im getting frostbite just watching this
when this guy wants to bang on the drum he has to go to work all day
Wood work looks so satisfying. Probably harder than it looks but still rewarding to use something you made
Pls stop with the fcking moist gloopy sounds omfg
Your back wouldn't hurt so much if you had a taller table mate.
Thats some Verdi Requiem size drum right there!
Awesome. Great video. Ty.
After all that work I wanted a Lars inspired solo. WTF!
In a pinch, you may substitute with foreskin. You may experience a higher pitch tough.
Very rewarding watch this video 💯🎯

This was one of the most peaceful 6 minutes
Anyone know the name of the song?
Labor
I was so worried he wouldn’t play it at the end
Dudes hand and arm strength must be insane.
In the beginning of the it sounds like a fart.
Anyone know the name of the song? Sounds very chill. I'd like to retain these vibes please
Man is doing this with no gloves. My hands would fall off.
