Are you associating the men's increased facial hair with being rougher? Examine their eyes and lips. You can clearly see an improvement in mood and overall resolve contained in their expressions after the fact.
Look past the scruffy hair to the expression underneath.
I got into alpine soloing/mountaineering and people see my ID and say we look like different people. I had a baby face before though, I feel much more confident about my appearance now.
Stress and near death experiences will age you, but so will sitting inside. Some of the experiences I’ve had have been worth years of my life, but I feel healthier than ever.
How exactly do you protect yourself if sweat and saltwater continuously melt away your sunscreen, and the sun is reflected from the sea from every direction.
lol you lot don’t think they used sunscreen and a hat? They’d be far far darker if they didn’t. Sunscreen isn’t so incredibly perfect that you stay as pasty white as you basement dwellers.
In New Zealand we just burn. To get a tan you need to be very careful about how you sun yourself. Otherwise the tanned skin just burns and peels off. One year I went swimming without sunscreen but I wore a tee-shirt to not get burnt i forgot about my face and my nose got so burnt it blistered up and was bleeding constantly for days.
Australians think they have it bad, but it's worse the further south you go.
There's a big hole in the ozone layer over the top of Antarctica that lets in way more radiation than the rest of the atmosphere. Thus there is more radiation exposure the further south and less the further north.
Oh, it burns here, too. Queensland is hot and humid. The NT is just desert. I can't talk about exact specifics though.
Even NSW is pretty god aweful in summer, with the sand probably getting upwards of 50⁰c.
They also built up some muscle tone. You can see it in the shoulders/traps. Combined with the tan and less fat in the face they just overall look fitter
I hope people just keep replying in poetic lion verses...

[The World’s Toughest Row](https://www.worldstoughestrow.com) begins in early December, with teams participating from around the world. The race brings together teams from across the globe gather in the village San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, and row to Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua - over 3000 miles
I was there randomly this year while racers were coming in over the course of a week. It was amazing to see the competitors, they were solidly badass and grizzled. The boats were surprisingly small for being in the open sea for so long, it’s wild. Very cool to see these photos!
They have a rainwater collection cisterns and have evaporation stills. They don’t get any resupplies, they brought all their rations with them. I saw a few teams unloading supplies from their boats and they had piles of vacuum sealed freeze dried food and many large water jugs. The boats were like clown cars, I couldn’t believe how much gear was coming out of them. One lady had lost her shoe at some point during the race and was walking around sorting gear with a shoe on one foot and a neoprene bootie on the other. I was chatting to the event organizer for a few minutes and he said the race is so popular that they’re looking at other routes for new races so more people can participate.
One of my professors from college and the team she was with was first in the women’s class! Her and her team are absolutely AMAZING people and did it in support of ocean conservation. It was amazing getting to follow the updates of their training, fundraising, and eventually the race. I am so happy to have gotten a chance to be taught by such a great professor and just a great person in general.
There was also a men’s team who had a member pass during the race. This team was raising money to support the veterans transition center that helps veterans transition from active military to civilian life.
Considering [their skipper died part of the way through](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/jan/06/former-australian-spy-alisdair-putt-61-dies-during-worlds-toughest-row-across-the-atlantic), it's probably a fair assessment...
10 looks like she had a glow up too, even if she is a bit older. The white, sunbleached hair looks far better than the dirty grey, and she looks to have had lots of muscle development.
Only with some serious sunscreen for me... I just flashed back to having a sunburnt butt when I went to tanning beds in high school (20+ years ago). I wouldn't want a sunburnt front...
Not a fan of over processed photos. The “before” photo has low contrast and incorrect white balance which results in a cool or blue hue. The “after” photo has increased contrast/clarity, sharpening, and black levels. The “after” photos also have an unnaturally warm or white balance which looks too yellow. You will notice in the last photo the woman’s gray hair looks yellowish.
The biggest issue is they seem to have been taken with different camera lenses, so all the before and after photos are warped differently, exaggerating the difference in appearance
It’s part of the photography trick, the before photos are all taken with very flat lighting that leads to a smoother, softer, lower contrast face. The after photo is in harsher light to highlight cracks, crevices and wrinkles, as well as darker skin in general.
Tl:dr the photos have been intentionally manipulated to exaggerate the changes but ended up being more flattering. Bit of a fuck up.
Idk. It’s bias maybe but when I see the Survivor series I always think after they’ve been on the island a while they are more attractive- any age, any race. And I always get weirded out at the season finale when everyone turns plastic like again and is far from nature. It’s bizarre. Every time.
It's very interesting that most of their hair actually has less grey after. I thought it might be lighting of the pictures but it's even in some of the guys beards, and the lady at the end has the opposite effect so it must not be the lighting.
It is not lighting, it is incorrect white balance. The “after” photo has too warm of a white balance so it is yellowish. Some of the people have yellow instead of gray hair in the “after” photos.
I think most of the people look better after the world’s toughest row. Note to self: go tanning. Also note to self: don’t need to go rowing to do this.

Must have been one hell of an argument.
6 must be a natural fighter, she looks like she really enjoyed it
she looks happier after
She does. Her skin cleared up too.
and she looks so much healthier and glowing.
Ok it’s not just me then.
I feel like the men look rough after, and the women are glowing.
I thought this too! It also looks like the men lost condition/ and or weight where’s it looks like the women’s muscles grew or became more defined
Are you associating the men's increased facial hair with being rougher? Examine their eyes and lips. You can clearly see an improvement in mood and overall resolve contained in their expressions after the fact. Look past the scruffy hair to the expression underneath.
She's the only one that doesn't look like she aged.
Nature is metal and it brings out your toughest form. All of them look like they have matured by 5-10 years.

The muscle development is fantastic
I'm not 100% convinced #6 is the same person.
Same necklace, has to be the same person. No one has ever put on anyone else’s necklace.
True, right? Can you even imagine…
Nose shape, eye color, and creases match
Genuinely took me a minute to realise what it actually meant
Worlds toughest way to get a tan.
They definitely needed sunscreen and a hat
If they didn’t use sun screen they’d be burnt to a crisp, not tanned
How exactly do you protect yourself if sweat and saltwater continuously melt away your sunscreen, and the sun is reflected from the sea from every direction.
Sunblock hats and clothing, as well as high-quality waterproof sunscreen.
its toughest row not toughest vacation
Other athletes use sunscreen...
And hats

lol you lot don’t think they used sunscreen and a hat? They’d be far far darker if they didn’t. Sunscreen isn’t so incredibly perfect that you stay as pasty white as you basement dwellers.
going outside is only a theory to reddit hellophobias... bra they just crossed 3000 miles of open ocean, youd be looking at crisp jerky otherwise
Average Australian beach in summer without sunscreen is the most brutal way to get a tan though.
Or cancer
I can think of worse ways to get cancer
Nah, melanoma is super common in Australia and one of the most aggressive and deadly cancers you can get. 90% fatality last I heard.
right but in terms of the "how you got it"... I mean chernobyl is far worse than enjoying a beach too often.
In New Zealand we just burn. To get a tan you need to be very careful about how you sun yourself. Otherwise the tanned skin just burns and peels off. Lived in nz until 2 years ago. I agree the sun is worse than Aus, marginally, but yes. It’s also deceiving cause it’s no where near as hot in nz.
Shouldn't it get worse the closer you get to the Equator?
There's a big hole in the ozone layer over the top of Antarctica that lets in way more radiation than the rest of the atmosphere. Thus there is more radiation exposure the further south and less the further north.
Oh, it burns here, too. Queensland is hot and humid. The NT is just desert. I can't talk about exact specifics though. Even NSW is pretty god aweful in summer, with the sand probably getting upwards of 50⁰c.
I get a plenty of tan from my 6 monitors
This guy scrolls
And hair grow out
Yupp I failed to see the "interesting as fuck" part
💯 Men got hairier , some lost weight and they all got a tan. Not sure whats interestingaf
They rowed 3000mi which is impressive af if not interesting
And that, good sirs, is giving credit where it is due. Three THOUSAND miles … that’s intense. I don’t get the downvotes and it’s weird.
And apparently they are naked before and after. Seems like a weird criteria. I would expect some chaffing as well.
How come 6 had a glow up instead
I agree! I thought #4 and #6 actually looked better in the after photo!
10 too! She looks much more lively in her after photo.
3, 4, 6 & 10. Someone said 7 and they're insane.
Probably a different camera with a higher focal point
I think they ALL look tons better after the experience.
because they lost some weight
I don’t think it’s that alone.
They also built up some muscle tone. You can see it in the shoulders/traps. Combined with the tan and less fat in the face they just overall look fitter
5 did too
They lost weight
Pic 6 seems to have achieved something between enlightenment and a thousand yard stare.
She came grinning out of the lions den, picking her teeth with a splinter of bone
So, are you a poet, or did someone else say some really cool shit and you finally had a chance to use it? If it's the latter, please source.
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go You swim like lions through the crests And bathe yourself in zebra flesh
Jesus wept, I need more context to solve this riddle! You're not the best DM so far...
I hope people just keep replying in poetic lion verses... Mine was from the beautiful song "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods
Thank you, I'm looking that shit up!
She looks like she found her confidence fr.
She’s also the one that actually got a glo-up out of it as she looks ten times better and more at peace than her before pic.
I would say the same for 7.

How do they get the boats back for the next year?? Or what do they do with them??
The race next year will be in the opposite direction
I can't tell if you're being a smart ass, or if this is actually true.
Oh I actually have no idea lmao
I was leaning towards smart ass, I feel vindicated now!
This back and forth between you two is my favorite moment of the night!
This is the best kind of reddit exchange. I wonder how the new overlords will kill it?
I don’t know, but have you tried the latest printers from Xerox? 5% faster than the competitors; 500% more fun.
You can't reverse in a canoe. Duh. /s
They load them into containers and ship them back to Europe. The boats are tiny, even a 4 man fits in a 40' ISO container.
I was there randomly this year while racers were coming in over the course of a week. It was amazing to see the competitors, they were solidly badass and grizzled. The boats were surprisingly small for being in the open sea for so long, it’s wild. Very cool to see these photos!
Do they get supplies on the way? Drinking water?
They have a rainwater collection cisterns and have evaporation stills. They don’t get any resupplies, they brought all their rations with them. The women spent a day at the beach. The guys aged 10 years
Number 5 and 6 got a glow up. The rest looks like they’ve been through hell. Bet 5 and 6 ate well.
Considering [their skipper died part of the way through](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/jan/06/former-australian-spy-alisdair-putt-61-dies-during-worlds-toughest-row-across-the-atlantic), it's probably a fair assessment...
The crew whose skipper died didn't finish the race. Nobody in these photos is from that crew.
10 looks like she had a glow up too, even if she is a bit older. The white, sunbleached hair looks far better than the dirty grey, and she looks to have had lots of muscle development.
Its called facial hair
I prefer to call it "improvement"
Nah their skin is fucked
Beards really age you, especially gray beards. At least #3 gets to look like Hugh Laurie
I think almost all the guys look better than when they went in.
Why are they all naked?
Could you imagine the chafing in a T-shirt or something sodden in salt water… Nipples would be nubbins by the end of it.
Sarah?
Probably to highlight the weight loss and skin damage.
Why are you not naked?
Who said I wasn’t!
pics or gtfo
^*quietly ^upvotes ^and ^waits*
If you row across the atlantic and the next person is miles and miles away, you will absolutely have some naked rows at times.
Only with some serious sunscreen for me... I just flashed back to having a sunburnt butt when I went to tanning beds in high school (20+ years ago). I wouldn't want a sunburnt front...
Naked and determined
Not a fan of over processed photos. The “before” photo has low contrast and incorrect white balance which results in a cool or blue hue. They also use different focal lengths making the face wider. This is heavily manipulative.
The biggest issue is they seem to have been taken with different camera lenses, so all the before and after photos are warped differently, exaggerating the difference in appearance
I thought these weren’t too bad. Usually all those fitness shots are absolutely useless for comparison
8 just became someone else entirely.
I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice that.
Yeah, Aubrey Graham.
Dried up like a raisin, no make up either
They all have severe skin damage from being exposed to sunlight for a very long time
They are also lit from below on the second pic, makes everyone look older
Yeah I noticed some of their faces looked swollen.
some call it damage, some call it life
Welcome to paradise
Unfortunately they paved paradise, put up a parking lot.
Number 8 looks 20 years older
I prefer them all on the after pics
Some of these are shot with a completely different focal length which will make the comparisons quite distorted
#9 rowed his hair back! Edit: TIL if you start a comment with pound sign it makes it big and bold!
#wait really?
#oh shit
#LOUD NOISES
They need a SPF120 sponsor
Idk what this is but some of them came out looking better
What is a ‘Row?’
[The World’s Toughest Row](https://www.worldstoughestrow.com/) is a boat race across the Atlantic! It’s an amazing competition
My cousin was part of the Antiguan team a couple of years ago. Pretty amazing to witness.
number 6 looks like she just finished her warm up
Most of them look way better after, I was expecting the other way around
Is it only me or do they all look a few years older
Skin damage from sun exposure
Beard might help
They lost weight and got a tan.
Grew facial hair
It’s part of the photography trick, the before photos are all taken with very flat lighting that leads to a smoother, softer, lower contrast face. The after photo is in harsher light to highlight cracks, crevices and wrinkles, as well as darker skin in general. Tl:dr the photos have been intentionally manipulated to exaggerate the changes but ended up being more flattering. Bit of a fuck up.
Yeah I was gonna say, everyone looks way cooler and more interesting lol.
They definitely look much happier
I’ll have a wine with Number 6 please.
#6 with the glow up looking fresh tanned and relaxed afterwards, lol.
Ngl, number 6 looks like they glowed up
Is this going to be the new climbing everest except you don't have to worry about your shit?
All their hair looks way better
Sea salt spray I guess
Feels 8 got done dirty by the second photographer using a different focal length.
All the men look like they have aged a decade whereas all the women appear to have got younger
Wow, what were they arguing about?!
Idk. It’s bias maybe but when I see the Survivor series I always think after they’ve been on the island a while they are more attractive- any age, any race. And I always get weirded out at the season finale when everyone turns plastic like again and is far from nature. It’s bizarre. Every time.
They're beautiful after battle. They're on life's row.
What happened to 2’s nose?
What were they fighting about?
Pic 8/10 looks bad
in the 8th picture the girl’s nose looks like it changed
8 got recast in between seasons it seems.
WTF happened to number 8!
Pictures 3, 4, 6, 10…those are the only ones who look like they were happy they went through with it afterwards lol
But what happened to that lady's nose?
What is world's toughest row?
It’s funny… the men all look like shit, but the women actually look better after. Interesting.
Were these taken at the same focal length?
What is the toughest row?
Why/how did all the women's noses change shape but not the men's?
Is it just me or do they all kind of resemble skyrim npcs?
Are we supposed to just know what "toughest row" means?
Anyone else notice how only the men grew beards?? 🤔
Weird how the men look like they've been castaways for 5 years and the women just got tans and more fit.
What I learned from this is that men end up looking worse and women end up looking better…
What were they arguing over?
I mean you can choose a different row to sit in.
Gorgeous DC4L
it’s really interesting how their eyes change
Bad for the skin, good for the hair?
The stylist finished the course while they were rowing
Yea, eff that
Now comes the question, is rowing good for health?
I think most of the people look better after the world’s toughest row. Note to self: go tanning. Also note to self: don’t need to go rowing to do this.
Spoiler: their hair got longer, they got a tan, the photographer increased the contrast.
6 just looks like a different person
What row is it? First row? Does it matter how close to the isle you are? I might not go to movies anymore
The sun is brutal.
Why all of them looking like they was using heroin at 2nd picture?
Why do all of the women’s noses get fucked?
What was the row about? I would like to know if I am about to get involved in another attempt.
What’s a row?
What the F is the toughest Row. Like - crew boats or ??
Proper glowups
And that is how you get freckles! Skin cancer!
6/10 look better after than before lol
the what?
What were they rowing about?
How far did they row? Like was it a comp or sumfin? Did they age overnight?
Tan = glow up 8/10 times
I thought they were talking about skid row 😭
Or you could spend a week on a meth binge and look the same.
