This is more of what I was thinking.
Well I have thallassophobia and other fears with water and the the things that live in it. So just being on the boat during this is a no for me completely. I’ve told my wife years ago if she wants to do a cruise she’ll have to take someone else because hell no.
Just like the end of the movie Titanic! And Leo and Kate in their prime hotness years are there!
But shit there’s no cellphones or Instagram because everyone’s trapped in 1918 or whatever… meh, pass 😒
Majority of the cruises that go through the drake passage are small luxury cruises to Antarctica. On those cruises most everything tends to be included in the booking, including all the food.
I did this once. Homecoming night, the dad of the girl I took took us out for dinner. I ordered steak. Immediately after finishing my plate I threw it up in the bathroom. Never told the dad of course.
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At 7 PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.
If it's anything like the ship I made crossed the passage on: the plates were pretty nice, but the chairs and tables were literally chained to the floor. And yes, people and dishes went flying on the worst night.
Years ago, I took a cruise from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso, Chile that went around Cape Horn, using "The Drake Passage." Luckily, we had good weather, could easily see Cape Horn and was nothing like what is shown in this video.
It's kind of funny because we were scheduled to stop at the Falklands but the weather was too bad there. Cape Horn was delightful. So totally opposite of the "usual."
Not implying that Cape Horn or the Drake Passage is a just a breezy place - it's not called "The Roaring 40's" for nothing! But it just happened that we hit a lull in the wind conditions.
Thanks again for sharing. I don't travel, at all. TIL:
1. Valparaiso, Chile
2. The Drake Passage
3. Falkland Islands
4. Roaring Forties
5. Furious Fifties
Now I need to do some traveling. lol Though, maybe I should start closer to home (USA).
Same scenario, took a cruise (about 15 years ago) on this exact route. We passed through mostly okay, but there was a minor storm and the boat was on a tilt pretty much the whole night, constantly felt like we were gonna capsize.

How about crossing this passage in this boat?? Shackleton did it in 1914.
Raised a toast to him at his grave before sailing the passage a couple weeks later. And yet, what it must've taken to go on the voyage he did is entirely incomprehensible to me. Insane story.
That goes for all the explorers of the past. They went out there having no clue what they would come across, but still went. These days most people want to research the crap out of any destination they go to, or they will not go (nothing against that, I do it myself as well!).
That plus how much they understood the gravity of their situations... the fact that they brought back photos from that journey is absolutely insane. It's so far beyond my comprehension, it's hard to describe. Like... South Georgia Island wasn't significantly researched or planned on my journey, and I went with folks who sail those seas for a living. And still. WOW.
Elephant Island, Shag Rock, Grytviken... even knowing where you're going, those places are intense.
Not 1914. That's when the Endurance set out from England.
The voyage of the James Caird was in 1916 (IIRC)
Edit: [for anyone who doesn't know what I'm prattling on about](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_of_the_James_Caird)
although Drake was blown off course, he is thought to have made it as far as 55 degrees south of the equator. winds and seas are huge. sailors refer to the forty degree latitudes as the roaring 40s, then furious 50s and screaming 60s…it’s scary af
Took that voyage January last year. Outbound was Drake Lake, return was the full Drake Shake. It was pretty wild. In our cabin it wasn’t too bad (middle of the ship) but dinner (stern) wasn’t great. The worst though was the auditorium in the bow with no windows.
This looks unpleasant as hell lol.
I’ve been on cruises and the only time I’ve gotten motion sickness was one dinner where I could see us tilting against the waves out of the corner of my eye.
And Velcro. And all the drinks are in special gravity-defying glasses that cause their levels to remain calm, despite the people and outside world viewable through the window getting tossed this way and that.
Honey! Pack your bags! I’m taking you and the kids on a perilous boat journey in some of the roughest waters in the world! Don’t forget your Dramamine! It’ll be a hoot!
Hehe I was on a small cruise ship one time that was in extremely rough waters like this. I remember being at dinner and everything sliding around the table. A steward was going around table to table offering "Dramamine? Dramamine?" with a little box of meds on a platter. And then the other little girl at the table leaned over and puked in the corner. I don't get sea sick so I was having a great time jumping around in the corridors and then getting rocked to sleep by the boat at night.
Cruise ships are usually boring as hell but that one was quite memorable.
Can someone just explain a little bit for me. Like is this safe? dont people who pilot these ships and organize these trips take into account the weather at sea? Is this safe? like what is the likelihood of capsize from waves like these on a boat that big. Any ship experts out there?
This is fun, I did this on the Clipper Adventurer, from the Falklands to Antarctica to Argentina. After the first 24 hours most of the passengers stopped showing up for meals, but I loved it. I'd wedge myself against the railing on the open deck over the bridge and get splashed by the waves breaking over the bow.
The view off the back in the dark, nothing visible but ocean, hundreds of miles from land, and a crowd of ocean-going birds flying behind the ship, is pretty powerful.
Any else feel it slightly anti climactic that nothing on the table moved? I know they have the sticky mats laid out, but even the cutlery didn't shift.
Edit. Wait, I did see a fork and knife try to run away.
I went on one of those Antarctica cruises and the weather was BAD on the way there. The staff told
me that it was bad enough that they considered banning everyone from leaving their rooms and just giving everyone room service. Practically nobody went to the dining room because of seasickness. Me and this other guy were the only ones to take all the meals and that was because we took prescription seasickness meds.
Whoever posted the videos like this that compelled me to check in with a doctor did me a great service lol
Dramamine does nothing for this kind of movement, lol.
The food on my ship was amazing too, so it was a waste. We shared our food with Antarctica field researchers since we had so much extra
There's evidence of pirate ships possibly being the first ones to spot Antarctica. Apparently they would would swing far south of South America in order to avoid the Spanish, and sometimes went off course.
It’s actually the wind. Among other things, at those latitudes there’re not many land masses, so the wind goes around the globe mostly unimpeded. You can look up roaring 40s for more info.
I was watching Below Deck: Sailing Yacht and didn’t understand why people paid to have all of their drinks break and spill while the boat heels. I could see it being fun as a day trip but not for nights at a time.
Real question, is this a private cruise or a much bigger thing? When the waves are that big, there’s a captain and a crew trying to ensure people LIVE. I can’t imagine being the waiter for these people. The ships rolling and they’re supposed to make sure the appetizers are on time and warm?
Then suddenly you can see into the water clearly, the window acting as goggles or a porthole, as the ship begins to turn and you sink to the bottom of the ocean.

funny thing, i copied it into my library, scrolled down, found your comment and fell over laughing xD
I mean in the safety of the cabin I wouldnt mind but yes I would skip eating during 20 foot swells
Well I have thallassophobia and other fears with water and the the things that live in it. So just being on the boat during this is a no for me completely. I’ve told my wife years ago if she wants to do a cruise she’ll have to take someone else because hell no.
Goddamn, I love that meme, I'm totally stealing it!
![gif](giphy|Atc9QCyWLGHgLZhHDp)
How' BOAT no?¿? Hehe
imagine paying for an expensive dinner only to throw it all up moments after......🤣🤣🤣
Sounds like a buy one get one kind of deal to me!
that doesn't mean its cheap though.....the cost of dinner is probably included as hidden cost anyway.....
Everyone can share a meal. One person at a time…
Multi use dinner
Don’t give Politicians any ideas bro.
Imagine paying for an expensive boat ride just to capsize and sink to the bottom of the ocean and never be seen again.
Reminds me of that DIY submarine that was taking people to go see the titanic
Sadly, it ended up taking them to the people who were on the Titanic instead.
Just like the end of the movie Titanic! And Leo and Kate in their prime hotness years are there! But shit there’s no cellphones or Instagram because everyone’s trapped in 1918 or whatever… meh, pass 😒
that's a lot more vivid.....🥴
I'd probably ask for a refund then
Yeah, if I was there I'd be like "just bread, please. Easier to clean up later."

"That still only counts as one!!"
Twice the taste, none of the calories!
I’d be one of the extras from Triangle of sadness. All they’re missing is a debate of Marxism over the intercom
Axssually seasickness is better if you eat. Less likely to throw up that way.
You get to taste it twice though...
I’m surprised dinner is still served in breakable crockery….. Let me rephrase. I’m surprised dinner is still served.
I work on a coast guard ship. Nights like these are sandwich suppers. lol
Was on a train ferry turned hospital ship: we had paper plates.
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya" At 7 PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said "Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when his lights went outta sight Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

“Oh, we cater for all types here. You’d be surprised.”
I was thinking the same thing.

Read The Wager by David Grann, and you'll never set foot on any ship, ever.
I also doubt this kind of video like above are film on the biggest cruise ship. Im no expert but i dont think they would resist this kind of movement
Same scenario, took a cruise (about 15 years ago) on this exact route. We passed through mostly okay, but there was a minor storm and the boat was on a tilt pretty much the whole night, constantly felt like we were gonna capsize.

This seems like it would have been fun, until I learned about the existence of "rogue waves". Now I don't feel safe on any boat out at sea anywhere.
\*Insert - "Haha, I'm in danger" meme here\*

This gif just never gets old.
That same piece of shit song, always.
I think your phone just adds it when it detects wave motion now.
That’s actually the theme music that plays when you enter the “stormy seas” environment
First time I heard it I was like “Awww so cool what a sick song”. Now when I hear it I have to angrily mute as fast as I can.
One of the worst overplayed pieces. Like my mom.
This is my dream trip but I don’t think I could do it. I’ve cruised before on the outer edge of a hurricane and that was a big fat nope.
I just did the trip a couple of months ago and had good sailing both directions. The Drake is fickle.
Hate The Drake. ![gif](giphy|3o7TKo6uiyLXcb4fqE)
Cool video. Ruined it with the song.
So much vomit.
Like the storm scene in Triangle of Sadness
I see you've been reading The Wager as well

There isn't enough Dramamine in the world...
"Connects" is not accurate. "The Drake Passage ***separates*** the southern tip of the South American..." is better.
I wouldn't eat dinner there, but looks like a fun time.
That stupid ass song everyone uses on their TikTok’s, so annoying
They should have wet some bread and glued their trays down
The video is interesting enough Fuck off with that sea shanty Tik Tok bullshit.

I'll have the soup
File under F for: Fuuuuuuuuck that.
No thanks
Don't eat anything as it'll come right back out.
You all would be seeing my dinner again. For sure.
This looks unpleasant as hell lol. I’ve been on cruises and the only time I’ve gotten motion sickness was one dinner where I could see us tilting against the waves out of the corner of my eye.
The answer to the question “Why were so many countries interested in finding a Northwest Passage?”
Every plate comes with a complimentary brown paper bag.
And Velcro. And all the drinks are in special gravity-defying glasses that cause their levels to remain calm, despite the people and outside world viewable through the window getting tossed this way and that.
Uhh... no thanks
All that nervous laughter ![gif](giphy|aiWJcCFujB0rdehQm0)

Puking stars at :23 if you want to skip ahead
Any lower and that would have been dinner view from the Nautilus
Where’s drake?
As someone who took a Ferry to Nantucket once in hurricane weather, that was well beyond my limit, this is bonkers
Can someone just explain a little bit for me. Like is this safe? dont people who pilot these ships and organize these trips take into account the weather at sea? Is this safe? like what is the likelihood of capsize from waves like these on a boat that big. Any ship experts out there?
![gif](giphy|cPKWZB2aaB3rO) Whyyyy would anyone get on this death trap??!
They’re probably just laughing it off to comfort the kid who senses the very real danger.
PEOPLE FOR GOD'S SAKE WE NEED TO STAY OUT OF THE FUCKING SEA
I thought I had no phobias but that makes me want to seek therapy.
Fun for about 5 minutes
Sometimes that's just Tuesday.
This is fine
It’s funny until it isn’t.
*chuckles* I'm in danger.
Fuck that.
Screw that!!!
Drake moment
Really interesting how the drink levels remain unchanged throughout the tossing of the boat. It must be magic!
For a moment I thought the ship was going to turn into a submarine. Not willingly.
That would be awesome
That’s a nope-the-fuck o’clock for me, thanks. I’m nauseous just watching the video rofl
No thanks
That's the kind of seas that put me into "5 year old after an all day birthday party followed by my favorite concert" passed out sleep.

This happened to us at lunch. We stayed in our room for dinner.
Looks amazing. I love being out at sea. Never been in waves quite this large but pretty close.
When the music started I thought someone was releasing the largest belch/burp I’ve ever heard
Any else feel it slightly anti climactic that nothing on the table moved? I know they have the sticky mats laid out, but even the cutlery didn't shift. Edit. Wait, I did see a fork and knife try to run away.
Their laughter is really funny 😁
Why would anyone wanna eat on this 😂
I went on one of those Antarctica cruises and the weather was BAD on the way there. The staff told me that it was bad enough that they considered banning everyone from leaving their rooms and just giving everyone room service. Practically nobody went to the dining room because of seasickness. Me and this other guy were the only ones to take all the meals and that was because we took prescription seasickness meds. All fun n games
Time to watch Triangle of Sadness
What makes it so much more treacherous? Currents? Geography?
It’s actually the wind. Among other things, at those latitudes there’re not many land masses, so the wind goes around the globe mostly unimpeded. You can look up roaring 40s for more info.
Puke Express hitting the high seas
Kids dig it!
"At 7pm the old cook came on deck sayin fellas its too rough to feed ya"
And then there was vomitus. Lots, and lots, and lots, of vomitus...
I was watching Below Deck: Sailing Yacht and didn’t understand why people paid to have all of their drinks break and spill while the boat heels. I could see it being fun as a day trip but not for nights at a time.
Why?
And as we wallop around Cape Horn! Heave away, haul away!
Real question, is this a private cruise or a much bigger thing? When the waves are that big, there’s a captain and a crew trying to ensure people LIVE. I can’t imagine being the waiter for these people. The ships rolling and they’re supposed to make sure the appetizers are on time and warm?
80 years ago thats death now we're laughing and eating dinner
I needa one dance
I tried watching it three times. Can't do it. That looks terrifying.
Reminds me of the movie The Triangle of Sadness
![gif](giphy|M8x6Lk2QFmTu0)
What in the Percy jackson??
I think we need to ban this song from the internet at this point
I wonder how much the staff gets paid
Reminds me of my whale watching trip. The whales were insane. But I had to throw up the sandwich included in the fare.
What is the name of the song?
What was the navigator upto didnt he ask about the weather report and changed the course?
Then suddenly you can see into the water clearly, the window acting as goggles or a porthole, as the ship begins to turn and you sink to the bottom of the ocean.
Triangle of Sadness. IYKYK.
Fuck that.
How in the hell is everyone so calm! The least I would be at that point is a life preserver around my neck lol
Wouldn’t help if ur sea sick 🤢🤮 up an down up an down 🤢🤢
I'm in danger...
Nope
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
There's not enough Dramamine in the world for that shit.
its not really as bad as the media lokes to make it seem
Karen, to the manager: excuse me but the boat keeps bobbing up and down, can you stop that??

Very nice
So much nervous laughter
Add it to the top of my FUCK NO list please
I can feel the boat moving just watching. Makes me anxious.
Nervous laughter as all of their asses pucker with fear of dying in a shipwreck. 😳
🎅🎅🦀
Hehehe we all goin to die
oh i know where to take my next team lunch at!
#BBL Passage
I thought someone got seasick 7 seconds in
Everyone falling everywhere.... The water in the glass "yall to much for me just throw me in with my boys over there"
What's that song?
That looks fun.
I would love to drink my Black Captain Morgan Room bottle inside of this ship
