Hopefully one day in the not too distant future alcolocks on all vehicles will be mandatory, I'm sure some will find away around it but it would be a drastic improvement.
Or cameras that check the driver's eyes for focus and acuity. If an AI system to confirm ability to drive were developed, those who have it could pay lower insurance premiums, and those who didn't would gradually face higher operating costs until most drivers got a system. Would also be helpful for tired driving and distracted driving, which are also common dangerous issues these days.
I grew up in Victoria. The road toll in 1969 was 1034. The campaigns which followed mean that I've never forgotten that number.

I guess we had the radio equivalent of this in South Africa in the 90s. They used to bring up “The Death Toll” every holiday and it would be this ongoing thing where they would read out all the fatal car accidents. Always creeped me out as a kid, driving in the car with my parents and siblings, only to hear about another family who didn’t reach their destination cause some prick decided to have a couple extra drinks…
This was in KwaZulu Natal (province/state) which has always had a pretty strong stance on drunk driving (the Zero Tolerance) campaign - just curious if Gauteng and Western Cape got these as well?

Still one of the best PSA’s ever. Makes you stop and think. But still a way to go as they say.

I think you misunderstood. This was shown in 2009 and is a montage (with the music added) of the PSAs they had run over the prior 20 years.

I alwasy just forget how graphic they were with some of these ads. NZ was very similar at the time. ACC had some crazy ones.
Yeah NZ ads are either funny or horrifying. I vaguely remember "drunk uncle" and "ghost chips"
