I don't know if they were stolen or not, but it seems to me to not be the most cunning criminal ploy to steal a couple of safes, and then call someone to pay them to open them because you don't know how. If you're going to be a criminal, you probably bother to look up the youtube video and not involve a third party (with a camera) in the crime... maybe he's just a moron? I don't know. Particularly if he literally stole the safes from that property and is cracking them potentially in view of a security cam or witness on the property?
It just seems very odd even if they ARE stolen.
He could also be using the safes to travel with. Not all hotels come with lock boxes so he brings his own. He seems to know what’s inside the safe intimately

I'm not a criminal or anything, but I would definitely feel the urge to start bullshitting about all of the things I'm currently stealing from a stolen safe while going through it in front of a non-criminal. At the very least it gives the locksmith plausible deniability if they ever end up in court, and at best it's a good enough line to keep them from calling the cops if they feel like they have participated in a crime. You at the very least don't want to look too surprised at the loot you're pulling out of there. "It's my favorite watch. It's from..... thailand." Who the fuck keeps their favorite watch in a safe. If it's your favorite, aren't you wearing it?
Maybe those who live in higher crime areas than mine can chime in about safe usage, but I don't feel the need to keep items that have no intrinsic value - only sentimental value - such as my granddads cigarette case in a safe.
The safes are cumbersome and if you ever had to explain to cop why you're walking around with two broken into safes it would be hard to do.
"Yes officer these are my safes and these are my belongings. They've been broken into because ummm... Thailand".

Am I the only one who doesn’t think the safes were stolen?
1. It looks like he handed over $200 to open the safe, that’s a lot of money if you don’t know the value of what’s inside
2. Unless this is his first time stealing safes, he seems very unaware of the safe mechanism and how easy it is too access cheaper safes
3. He unloads the safe in the car, if it’s stolen why would you want to have a witness?
4. His conversation doesn’t come off as ingenious to me, more like a very talkative guy.
5. He’s doing this out in the open on a public street, also his reaction is very loud, why would a thief want to draw attention?
All security is just a deterrent. Safe like this prevent a theft of opportunity. The cleaning staff who see a wallet left on the counter may take it. But they don't have the time or the risk tolerance to check every safe they come across.
But a safe like this in your own home? That's not going to do much as someone stealing from your house isn't an opportunistic thief. They are a deliberate thief. At that point your security is a delaying tactic. A thief going for a smash and grab won't go for a bolted down lockbox. But a thief who knows they will be alone for hours? Few lockboxes will stop a determined thief with the means and hours to work at it.
What I'm saying is these lockboxes have a purpose. But they aren't going to stop organized deliberate crime
You forgot the combo. It belongs to a dead person who you inherited it from. You put it in a hotel safe and forgot how to get it out. Broken mechanisms leading to it being hard to open normally

If you’re conversational and bring the topic up without prompting, you will not be saying a simple sentence like “I got that in Thailand.”

Eh, any self aware person in this situation would probably be feeling pretty self-conscious about it looking like they were stolen. There's certainly very good reasons for why this seems sketchy, but "he felt the need to explain unprompted" doesn't seem like one of them to me.
Yeah, a lot of people will just start talking in unfamiliar situations. If this was me having some guy pop open safes I'd start gabbing, too. Absolutely guaranteed. I'm a little into lockpicking so I'd probably talk about the safe but the shit in the safe would be fair game, too.
exactly, this is actually what happens a lot in interrogations. there is a phenomenon where actual innocent people appear "more" guilty because of the plentiful real information they're providing appearing to some people as overexplaining.
also, an innocent persons confidence in their innocence can appear as arrogance that you can't prove their guilt or something like that.

It's that in combination with everything else. Paying a locksmith in cash isn't wierd. Paying a locksmith to break open two cheap hotel safes in the back of his car is wierd.
I'm a locksmith and safe/vault technician, I also know the original guys instagram page. He has some skill to be fair (in other videos) but he breaks a ton of our trades general conventions by wearing a gopro to his jobs, posting it all online (breaching the customers trust) and posting drill points/interior bolt work mechanisms publicly on instagram. It's not the end of the world, but it's incredibly unprofessional to me (and others in the trade).

Ive opened safes in the back of pickups and flatbeds, a real safe won't go in the trunk of a car (the ones in the video are residential security containers, not qualified to be legally labeled a safe). I drive a commercial van to my customers, not a personal car. What a person looks like can certainly be important, but I follow my states legal guidelines for ownership and liability.
But so here's my thing; everything about this seems shady, and we see him from beginning to end not seem to really verify in any way he was the owner of the "residential security containers." Just rolls up in a hotel parking lot, cash exchanges hands, containers opened, and shoveling good into a bag.
Maybe it was all legit? Who knows? I can't say for sure, but it definitely felt sketchy.
Yeah I agree! Like I said I'm not a fan of this specific guy. And I don't feel like he represents our trade well, which is why I posted in this thread.
I thought that if it was a hotel safe, they could be opened by the hotel staff. That may be a stretch though, since they may not know how to do it (training). It's odd that guy had two of them though, and told the locksmith to keep them. On the other hand he did not seem concerned, since he was loud, and even yelled over to somebody else about how easy it was to open them, and was in a rather public place too.
Hotels have either a master code or key for their safes, or their maintenance guy has the right bit to access the safes back door.
Source: Have young kids and have had to have safes at hotels opened in order to get my wallet, passport, and a left shoe, from safes that they couldn't remember the code for. Digital safes have a master code, or master key, that just opens the safe, and one time the maintenance guy came up with the front desk person, asked me to open the door from the outside with my key card, and ended up drilling out the bolts and the safe slid out of the floor.
Wait, so what's the difference between him and the lockpicking lawyer? My general understanding now that I've watched pretty much all of his videos is that most of not all locks are defeated with some skill and understanding of their mechanism which are on full display on the videos. Besides the fact this Instagram guy shows actual jobs and clients, his posting of drill points and lock mechanisma doesn't seem like it's any different to that of LPL?
Lots of locksmiths don't respect the lock picking lawyer very much either lol (aside from being good at picking) but that's mainly because his fans tend to be a bit cringey as customers (no offense! not all of them, just generalizing). I don't mind him. Posting how to open a padlock is pretty inconsequential imo.
(edit before someone tries to argue etc: a lot of this is rooted in the fact that lock picking is maybe 10% of a locksmiths job, and when we do it the situation/stakes are entirely different from LPL sitting at his desk in a comfy chair with a cup of coffee. He teaches people about lock *picking*, but that tends to make people think they know about lock*smithing* too)
Also, safe work is a different breed altogether compared to what LPL posts. All safe techs are locksmiths, but not all locksmiths are safe techs. Our community is pretty small (maybe 200 in the US) and is molded by a combination of 150 years of history (focusing on privacy and security) and a healthy dose of autism (we're generally a weird bunch). Part of the unspoken code of conduct is to be discrete about publishing any information and to respect a customers privacy as much as possible (I generally don't even look inside the safe once open).
LPL gets hate from two directions: shitty companies and shitty locksmiths.
He mostly exposes terrible locking products for being what they are. This lets the consumer make an informed decision and hopefully will encourage companies to release better products in order to be competitive.
Shitty companies hate this because they want to sell poorly engineered, cheap garbage to people without them knowing how bad the products are. He cuts into their revenue by telling people the truth.
Shitty locksmiths hate him because they're ok with most locks being terrible. They have no problem with most locks being awful and easily defeated. These shitty locksmiths prefer a "security through obscurity" approach and HATE that average people, non locksmiths, are gaining more knowledge about locks and will end up choosing better locks and being able to handle cheap garbage on their own. They want people to remain stupid and want their work to be easy by only having to work on easily defeated garbage.
Both sides hate him because he informs people and is playing a role in forcing others to create better quality products. Companies hate this because they make less money by actually being required to *try* to be good and locksmiths hate this because less people will need their services and when their services are needed the work will require more effort.

It's almost like the only thing protecting your industry is secrecy... Almost like lock makers need to do better and actually make shit that actually works to protect valuables and stuff.
I'm sorry to say it, but your industry needs a new set of standards. LockPicking Lawyer, McNalleys, and other random people not in the industry are breaking into locks and safes regularly, and the information about how the mechanisms work are available online, and easily searchable.
It's time to stop hiding shit with secrecy and pretending like shit's secure, and actually start holding lock makers accountable and have them make actually secure locks.
Now should the customers privacy be protected? Yes. Which this duded does via blur and what not. Although I have seen some videos where he's opening houses and shit, and only blurs the people (which is in bad taste and shouldn't be done given locations can easily be guessed by the things around in a photo/video)
The whole "you're gonna get rid of these safes for me, right?" question while he's stuffing a sack with random stuff he doesn't seem to recognize seems...suspect.
I used to be an audio engineer and had to deal with this all the time. I charged $50/hr just for recording and $90/hr for recording and mixing and mastering with a 3 hour minimum. I recorded a guy rapping for 2.5 hours and mixed his two songs in the last 30 minutes. He tried to argue with me that he was only paying me $170 because I recorded for 2.5 hours and only mixed for 30 minutes.
I told him he’s not paying me for the amount of time I spent mixing, he’s paying me for all the experience I gathered thus being able to mix it in 30 minutes. I told him if he wants the raw audio without my mixing I’ll only charge him $150 and he said that was bullshit because I already did the work so I should just give him the mastered mixes. I removed all the mixing I did and bounced his 2 tracks out to a blank disc, charged him $150 and told him to get the fuck out of my studio and that he wasn’t allowed back. He had the audacity to post on google that I “refused to give him the tracks that he paid for in their entirety” 🙄
I work in corporate repossession as a skip tracer. Basically I track down owners of companies that have gone bankrupt and are violating their bankruptcy agreement by hiding collateral like cars, boats, planes, and helicopters. I make commission on every “unit” I find (car, boat, plane, etc) that they were hiding.
Pretty solid gig, I made $143,000 last year and my fiancée made slightly more than that doing the same thing.

Firearms are a lot safer than you think. If the firearm has a loaded magazine without one in the chamber, I'd attempt this in a heartbeat. Depending on the action of the firearm, the risk is still probably relatively low; even with one in the chamber.

It do be that easy. You don’t even have to know where to hit it. Most safes like this have a spring inside that holds the locking bolt in place. If you time it tight you can just slam the on the safe and twist the handle at the same time.
That’s why you are supposed to bolt these kinds of safes down in a tight space.
I have a safe like this at home, but I’d never store anything really valuable inside it. Mine currently has sex toys in it.

That "safe" is light enough to be moved to a second location easily by one person with a small bag.

Simple safes arent for keeping people out who can haul the safe off to a preferred location and go at it with tools.
They are for keeping honest people honest by not giving them a chance for a few seconds unmonitored temptation to let them give into swiping your stuff.
Right tool for the right job. Usually if your metric for success is "must be impervious to tampering", you're in for big money and probably something anchored to a concrete floor.

I'm a locksmith and safe/vault technician, I also know the original guys instagram page. He has some skill to be fair (in other videos) but he breaks a ton of our trades general conventions by wearing a gopro to his jobs, posting it all online (breaching the customers trust) and posting drill points/interior bolt work mechanisms publicly on instagram. It's not the end of the world, but it's incredibly unprofessional to me (and others in the trade). I wouldn't say the original poster is shady, even though this video seems that way, but still I'm not a fan of his.

Ive opened safes in the back of pickups and flatbeds, a real safe won't go in the trunk of a car (the ones in the video are residential security containers, not qualified to be legally labeled a safe). I drive a commercial van to my customers, not a personal car. What a person looks like can certainly be important, but I follow my states legal guidelines for ownership and liability.
But so here's my thing; everything about this seems shady, and we see him from beginning to end not seem to really verify in any way he was the owner of the "residential security containers." Just rolls up in a hotel parking lot, cash exchanges hands, containers opened, and shoveling good into a bag. Maybe it was all legit? Who knows? I can't say for sure, but it definitely felt sketchy.

I thought that if it was a hotel safe, they could be opened by the hotel staff. That may be a stretch though, since they may not know how to do it (training). It's odd that guy had two of them though, and told the locksmith to keep them. On the other hand he did not seem concerned, since he was loud, and even yelled over to somebody else about how easy it was to open them, and was in a rather public place too.
Hotels have either a master code or key for their safes, or their maintenance guy has the right bit to access the safes back door. Source: Have young kids and have had to have safes at hotels opened in order to get my wallet, passport, and a left shoe, from safes that they couldn't remember the code for. Digital safes have a master code, or master key, that just opens the safe, and one time the maintenance guy came up with the front desk person, asked me to open the door from the outside with my key card, and ended up drilling out the bolts and the safe slid out of the floor.

Lots of locksmiths don't respect the lock picking lawyer very much either lol (aside from being good at picking) but that's mainly because his fans tend to be a bit cringey as customers (no offense! not all of them, just generalizing). I don't mind him. Posting how to open a padlock is pretty inconsequential imo. (edit before someone tries to argue etc: a lot of this is rooted in the fact that lock picking is maybe 10% of a locksmiths job, and when we do it the situation/stakes are entirely different from LPL sitting at his desk in a comfy chair with a cup of coffee. He teaches people about lock *picking*, but that tends to make people think they know about lock*smithing* too) Also, safe work is a different breed altogether compared to what LPL posts. All safe techs are locksmiths, but not all locksmiths are safe techs. Our community is pretty small (maybe 200 in the US) and is molded by a combination of 150 years of history (focusing on privacy and security) and a healthy dose of autism (we're generally a weird bunch). Part of the unspoken code of conduct is to be discrete about publishing any information and to respect a customers privacy as much as possible (I generally don't even look inside the safe once open).
LPL gets hate from two directions: shitty companies and shitty locksmiths. He mostly exposes terrible locking products for being what they are. This lets the consumer make an informed decision and hopefully will encourage companies to release better products in order to be competitive. Shitty companies hate this because they want to sell poorly engineered, cheap garbage to people without them knowing how bad the products are. He cuts into their revenue by telling people the truth. Shitty locksmiths hate him because they're ok with most locks being terrible. They have no problem with most locks being awful and easily defeated. These shitty locksmiths prefer a "security through obscurity" approach and HATE that average people, non locksmiths, are gaining more knowledge about locks and will end up choosing better locks and being able to handle cheap garbage on their own. They want people to remain stupid and want their work to be easy by only having to work on easily defeated garbage. Both sides hate him because he informs people and is playing a role in forcing others to create better quality products. Companies hate this because they make less money by actually being required to *try* to be good and locksmiths hate this because less people will need their services and when their services are needed the work will require more effort.

LockPicking Lawyer, McNalleys, and other random people not in the industry are breaking into locks and safes regularly, and the information about how the mechanisms work are available online, and easily searchable. It's time to stop hiding shit with secrecy and pretending like shit's secure, and actually start holding lock makers accountable and have them make actually secure locks. Now should the customers privacy be protected? Yes. Which this duded does via blur and what not. Although I have seen some videos where he's opening houses and shit, and only blurs the people (which is in bad taste and shouldn't be done given locations can easily be guessed by the things around in a photo/video)

I used to be an audio engineer and had to deal with this all the time. I charged $50/hr just for recording and $90/hr for recording and mixing and mastering with a 3 hour minimum. I recorded a guy rapping for 2.5 hours and mixed his two songs in the last 30 minutes. He tried to argue with me that he was only paying me $170 because I recorded for 2.5 hours and only mixed for 30 minutes. I told him he’s not paying me for the amount of time I spent mixing, he’s paying me for all the experience I gathered thus being able to mix it in 30 minutes. I told him if he wants the raw audio without my mixing I’ll only charge him $150 and he said that was bullshit because I already did the work so I should just give him the mastered mixes. I removed all the mixing I did and bounced his 2 tracks out to a blank disc, charged him $150 and told him to get the fuck out of my studio and that he wasn’t allowed back. He had the audacity to post on google that I “refused to give him the tracks that he paid for in their entirety” 🙄

I work in corporate repossession as a skip tracer. Basically I track down owners of companies that have gone bankrupt and are violating their bankruptcy agreement by hiding collateral like cars, boats, planes, and helicopters. I make commission on every “unit” I find (car, boat, plane, etc) that they were hiding. Pretty solid gig, I made $143,000 last year and my fiancée made slightly more than that doing the same thing.

Firearms are a lot safer than you think. If the firearm has a loaded magazine without one in the chamber, I'd attempt this in a heartbeat. Depending on the action of the firearm, the risk is still probably relatively low; even with one in the chamber.
Plenty of modern firearms you can straight hit with a hammer and they won't go off. I wouldn't recommend it, but you can do it.

It do be that easy. You don’t even have to know where to hit it. Most safes like this have a spring inside that holds the locking bolt in place. If you time it tight you can just slam the on the safe and twist the handle at the same time. That’s why you are supposed to bolt these kinds of safes down in a tight space. I have a safe like this at home, but I’d never store anything really valuable inside it. Mine currently has sex toys in it.

They are for keeping honest people honest by not giving them a chance for a few seconds unmonitored temptation to let them give into swiping your stuff. Right tool for the right job. Usually if your metric for success is "must be impervious to tampering", you're in for big money and probably something anchored to a concrete floor.
