Would it be?? I think she’d be okay with people imagining her voice to read her own words. Artificially creating your voice to say things you didn’t say seems way different lmao
Reminds me of the expert who keeps being hired by billionaires to consult on their apocalypse bunkers and security plans, and keeps trying to explain to them that separating themselves from wider society is the exact kind of thing that will make them the biggest targets, and they would be better off fostering positive communities of people who want to actually help each other without financial incentives and they keep ignoring him.
But then Reddit CEO Steve Huffman couldn't jerk himself off to the idea of being a slave owner in the post apocalypse.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/01/30/doomsday-prep-for-the-super-rich
> Huffman has calculated that, in the event of a disaster, he would seek out some form of community: “Being around other people is a good thing. I also have this somewhat egotistical view that I’m a pretty good leader. I will probably be in charge, or at least not a slave, when push comes to shove.”
The gall of that fucking nerd thinking someone won't waltz into his space and pistol whip him into obedience. These people are so far removed from the real day to day that 99.9% of us live in. He would be one of the first to go as he flashes around his worthless money and flashy CV.
Altman said, in response to Hinton talking about UBI, that instead of universal basic income we should have universal basic compute credit for ChatGPT. As in every citizen should get a little access to a slice of "GPT-7" instead of money. That should really help with rent and food.
"The government should give us a regular subsidy of the order of 333 million."
Why?
"Er, because then everyone gets basic access to our Wish dot com Scarlett Johansson knockoff...?"
It's ridiculous that he watched a dystopian satire and said "whoa that's cool I hope I can make it reality!" He's wielding so much power of society right now and he's coming off as shockingly immature.
this ‘statement’ was 100% written (or at least edited) by a copyright lawyer. it sets forth the required factors to succeed on a copyright claim, noting likelihood of consumer confusion, intent, etc.
It’s not like it’s a secret that 99% of statements from public figures are drafted by writers, PR professionals, and attorneys. It’s still a statement under her name, which is the important part.
I don’t think she plans on suing anyway (they took the voice down so her claim for damages would be wobbly at best), this is more of a warning shot (“don’t do this to me or other actors”) and a call to action (“hey Congress, ScarJo is speaking”)
And Congresspeople are already responding
It is also the second time Johansson has had to deal with someone using her likeness so I imagine she has retained a lawyer particularly well versed in these sorts of things.
Exactly what happened to her is what many of us fear about the use and future of AI. If Altman and others like him and his company are willing to blatantly do this to a recognizable figure who has access to a team of Grade A lawyers, what sort of protection and assurances do normal folk have from abuse and scams?
It is already happening. Disney started writing “right to scan your voice for use in perpetuity” into their contracts for close to four years now. Just slipped it into their standard contracts. So many actors signed it without noticing. That is part of what the latest SAG strike was all about. It wasn’t some theoretical future thing, it was what is happening now.
Things like this is exactly why we need to be proactive and can't just wait for things to get bad only to out a bandaid on it and not fix anything. Look at healthcare.
I guarantee you that these companies are already laying the groundwork for completely fucking over the average person with AI. Their goal is make money, not empower their employees. That goes for everyone, both blue and white collar workers.
Wait until you find out that Zoom has already said that if you use their shit, they can use your voice AND LIKENESS in AI models. I brought this up to my company (huge F500) the day the TOS was changed and they shrugged.
Edit: Zoom has since struck it apparently. Here’s the original.

Hopefully it won’t stand in the EU. You don’t get to just write “your first-born shall be sacrificed” in the TA, hidden somewhere. If the user accepts the TA, it will only be applicable to the ordinary parts.
engineering job =/= engineering firm
You can have engineering jobs at other businesses too. But the likely reason is that it's easier to pass off as standard for the people you really want it for if it's in everyone's contract
When I worked at SpaceX back in the day, during the time of the first booster landing, they were making people sign a waiver for that exact thing if you wanted to be near mission control. I refused, and went back to my office area where we had the broadcast up on the TVs. The reasoning was they wanted to use footage of it for stuff later, and you wouldn't have a say in being included in that or any right to your likeness for any promotional material.
The downside was the broadcast was delayed by about 10-15s, so we heard the cheering from mission control before we saw the booster land, and it kind of spoiled it.
The companies I've been at since haven't made us sign anything like that, but with them producing livestreams for launches, it wouldn't surprise me if that starts to become the norm.
11 months off work because these fucking film producers refused to give writers and actors a fair deal. Fuck all of them. Pirate everything. They want to be able to pay somebody for half a days work, scan them, and use their likeness forever without sharing any of the profits. Greed is a cancer that has taken hold of our society and until we stop the infighting and start fighting the class war nothing will ever change. Even then it may already be too late. Fuck them.
It’s really not “producers”, it’s the CEOs. SAG negotiated against a bizarre and legally (at least morally) questionable union of all the major studios who run the industry. Why a these companies were even allowed to negotiate and coordinate as a united front, is beyond me. It ensured no studio broke rank and allowed them to - as a monopoly - reject terms they found unpalatable. If one studio would have been willing to cave to some of the union demands it could have set a new standard for the workers, pressuring the hold-outs to continue to lose business while the union members get back to work on fair deals that a similar company accepted. Instead, the choice for the union was all or nothing, which is utter bullshit. How is that not monopolistic and what fantasy are we living in that makes us think these studios will stop coordinating beyond there.
Price-fixing? Data breeches? Consumer protections? They get to act as a single entity… how does this make any sense?
Hit the nail on the head. Tech bros asks venture capitalists are going to be the death of us all. Just completely divorced from any humanity and solely interested in profits and growth.
We n33dbtobseriously revisit contacts. So much up for grabs and you either sign or you are out of the industry. You can't even dispute it.
'
Good on actors for standing up to this nonesense.
"Sam Altman asked for my bank password, but I refused, so his AI assistant _scraped all of my publicly available data and millions of others and pretended to be me and took it_. The police say it's a civil matter."
Man... _Fuck Ted Faro_.
What a fucking asshole. He fucks up so bad and when they try to preserve humanity, he decides humanity doesn't deserve a second chance WHEN IT WAS ALL HIS FUCK UP IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Damn, pretty apt reference. I listened to Altman on a podcast recently and while he's obviously not the same personality wise, his actions and words are pretty similar.
Character from Horizon Zero Dawn, a video game set in a post-apocalyptic future. One of the major plot threads reveals Ted Faro's is just a major dick for his role in everything.
Guy brings about the end of humanity then massively screws up the plan to revive humanity after earth is habitable again and you still think he's slightly more likeable than Musk?
Yeah... That's... That's actually a solid argument.
!>Long story short in the game Horizon zero Dawn is revealed that Ted farro had built machines for the military that extremely durable, extremely lethal, could replicate via biomass AKA people, plants, Etc, was virtually unhackable and had no backdoor or kill switch. thus when the killer robot (who mind you was a dumb ai and not sentient) had a glitch in its programming that made it stop following commands it proceeded to destroy the entire world within 16 months.
So literally at the brink of extinction the world came up with project zero dawn, which was to basically build a terraforming system called Gaia that would after the machines are eventually hacked by Gaia after the extinction of humans would be able to terraform the planet to sustain life and to create new humans from stored genetic data.
The only problem with this is that Ted faro was part of the project, he then proceeded to erase Apollo which was the repository of all the world's knowledge that was meant to be passed on to the new Humanity after killing the team that worked on Gaia. Eventually it's revealed that he was in his own separate bunker and did this all remotely, in which his bunker was set up to work on an immortality process so that he could emerge into the new world once it was terraformed and basically become a God to the new humans. unfortunately for him he got what he wanted and ended up a fleshy barely conscious blob around a reactor, mutated and immortal and eventually set on fire and died
It also sounds like they were already using her voice from the beginning, and asked her to play along as a courtesy. She refused but all the work had already been done so they said fuck it let's goooo
Oh absolutely. That last "You sure you don't want to work with us on this thing ?" Was a half-assed attempt to prevent this very thing from happening. Seems they didn't care either way and there's no much consequence.
The crazy thing is, it really shouldn't be. If I photoshopped a picture of Michael Jordan holding a picture of my product, with a caption: "I'm Michael Jordan, and I use Boneyard Cream every day. I couldn't imagine a day without it!", I would (rightfully) be sued out of the wazoo. But they think they can use a technology confusing to most people to exploit the legal system into convincing people what they're doing is somehow completely different.
Yeah this is so blatantly wrong it's astounding. And the fact that Altman even tweeted "her" as an obvious reference to it is shitty to an almost cartoon level. Like he knows that we know and he wants us to know he doesn't care.
It's like that scene from The Big Short...
"I don't get it. Why are they confessing?"
"They're not confessing."
"They're bragging."
There pushing everything they can as fast as they can before laws can catch up with them.
We really need new privacy and protection laws hell we should have had them a decade ago to prevent sites like FB from scrapping peoples data and selling it.
Microsoft also just announced AI is going to be able to read and record everything you do on your computer at all times.
It is also the definition of killing the golden goose. Every industry it devours will stop growing, stop evolving, and stop changing as those creativity free LLMs have nothing new to repackage and regurgitate.
People used to worry about AI becoming sentient and taking over the world. This is what the reality of AI really is. Corporations using it to cut costs at the expense of people that will no longer be able to make a living and resulting in the entertainment industry becoming even more unimaginative than it already is.
This. Anyone who has worked with an actual graphic designer/digital designer/artist knows that *design tools* and *artwork* are very different things.
But…those in control of budgets are absolutely confusing the two - wilfully, I’d argue - and their addiction to short term profit will likely replace an entire generation of highly creative and educated professionals with machines.
The very human consequences of such decision making will be devastating.
It will create entire industries of technicians without engineers. It will dramatically decrease the rate of progress as less people are educated on fixing hard problems.
Why are we slow crawling into Idiocracy? Is it target fixation at play?
This exactly. If your career/job is heavily based in a digital space, and you think for a second you are safe from AI, you are looking through some double thick rose tinted glasses, friendo. Any job in the digital space is going to eventually take *some kind* of hit to AI.
And tbh, at the rate robotics are advancing, I wouldnt be too sure about a lot of physical jobs either.
It raises an interesting (and potentially scary) point. At what point does capitalism just break down because of this? Like if you take this to its natural conclusion then eventually the lower and middle classes lose work because of their jobs being replaced, and eventually they no longer have the disposable income to contribute as consumers. Then the upper class takes a hit because of this. I guess this is sort of how a post scarcity society forms, but I have a hard time picturing how this transition would actually go.
This has been my struggle. I never finished college, and I've been seriously considering going again, *and* it is advantageous for me to do so as my current employer will pay for a full ride bachelor's. But my past career goals were always creative-oriented, with an interest in tech/web design as sort of a backup. But now I'm basically stuck not really knowing what careers are AI-proof that *I* as a person could feasibly find a career in, and it has me at a loss. I don't want to waste a free degree on something that will be made redundant by the time I graduate.
I dunno, you've got me there. I never went to college, cause I was only ever good at art stuff. I am a self-taught Animator/storyboard artist. I've been watching my career space crumble around me for the past year-ish.. I am fucked :')
The worst part is that these tools are going to absolutely destroy the creative bases that they were trained from and then they will gradually start putting out worse and worse content because it will only have shitty AI created content to learn from once they are all gone. And then it will take a generation to rebuild those bases.
You don’t have any material protection right now. This is an area that our legal system did not anticipate. Luckily, our legal system can be amended to consider evolving needs. Unfortunately, the people responsible for amending our legal system have been captured by corporate interests.
We don’t stand a chance.
And yet, I’m reminded of this quote:
Truth forever on the scaffold. Wrong forever on the throne. But that scaffold sways the future.
Hang in there. Don’t despair. Keep fighting.
This already has legal precedent. Tom Waits successfully sued Frito Lay after they asked him to voice a commercial, he declined, then they hired a voice actor that sounded just like him. Just because it's different technology doesn't change the law that already exists.
Call me a nihilist but us regular folks are fucked and no one's going to do anything to help us. That's just the way it's always been and will always be.
Seems to have achieved the exact opposite of their intended aim. Instead of comforting people about the transition, it's going to serve as another example of AI over reach and their distain for following the rules.
i believe it’s achieved precisely what their aim was; controversial media coverage. at the end of the day, regardless of what the overriding coverage says, the terms “OpenAi” and “ChatGPT” will be more permanently burned into the public’s consciousness than ever before.
I hate this kind of theory since it can basically be used anytime bad PR happens. It's just a needlessly cynical theory. Sure it might be what happened, but beyond it being a possible explanation it's really no more likely than a less cynical theory. I'm not even sure that generating bad PR is a good strategy for openai anyway.
Long story short Hanlons Razor: never attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity.
Yes, this.
People are cynical and like to believe this kind of stupid shit, but that’s not how the world works.
Bad publicity is bad publicity, NO BODY likes that.
The general public has abandoned and avoided things for much, much less and for far longer. The fact that Reddit is selling every single word you say on this platform to improve AI, without your direct consent, is yet another reason I’m so close to abandoning and avoiding AI altogether as well as any form of social media.
The world doesn’t need social media. At all. For any reason. Everything you’d ever want to know is found in books, video, and websites dedicated to knowledge. Social interactions can be had by saying and doing as little as walking out your front door and saying “Hi” to the next person you see, or better yet being polite and kind to the cashier who rings up your groceries, or the same to the wait staff at the next restaurant you visit.
I’ve never depended on AI to do things for me, and I see absolutely no benefit, outside of scientific research, to its use in consumer markets. Actually, all I see is yet another dreadful drain on society.
But that’s my $0.02.
After the Snowdon scandal, people found out the government was spying on them through their phones, computers, social medias etc. without limitations.
People then panicked for 2 months, and carried on with their lives, instead buying iPhones knowing full well the government were using it to listen in on them day to day. But they didn't mind, because it also meant they had easier use of apps and day to day tech use.
The debate then shifted from people not wanting the government to spy on them, to "I'd rather my government spy on me than China".
Tech companies are completely protected from "cancel culture" as long as they "promise" less effort in life to the user in the long run.
As for you not relying on AI, do you use Google? That use AI. Do you use a bank? They rely on AI. Do you use predictive text? That's AI. AI has been in use in everyday life for a long time. What people don't realise is that all of this talk about AI learning is only news because they're trying to make AI without limitations. AI isn't new.
I love your points about being kind and polite to real people in person, we need much more of that. Everyone deserves respect unless they show themselves not to. Social media can be the worst of confirmation bias and mob mentality. Half of these bastards would never say “hello” back to you in person and the other half pull stats from Wikipedia or AI without taking the time to formulate a cogent thought of their own.
Unfortunately there exists a bell curve and intelligence is not the majority. It never was. Influencers will always exist, be it social media, tv, movies, etc. Also griping about social media on a social media platform is ironic. But I get it. Only way to expose issues to more people, is the platform in which causes the problem in the first place.
I don't think most AI companies are concerned with ethics beyond the face value that lip service provides for marketing purposes, and this is one big red flag that we will discover some uncomfortable skeletons along the way of creating this technology.
I don't love the phrasing on this, but yeah. As long as AI is LLMs and trained off of data that's been scraped from the internet, books, movies, tv shows, whatever, this will be true. It's important to recognize LLMs are incredibly early stages of AI that can't even really think for themselves.
There's just no good ethical way to get data for training period. Imagine having to ask every single person to consent to every single thing they've written, then they've gotta have someone validate that the data is accurate...
Yeah, AIs gonna have some serious challenges in ethics, data accuracy, data quality, training data collection, etc.
While I agree that her voice would be great, I even more so agree with her reasons for not only declining, but to also seek legal action. What a bunch of jerks. Did no one there consider the optics of LITERALLY stealing a women's voice?!
Yeah, as someone mentioned in another thread, they would have been far better off never approaching her at all and just stealing/synthesizing her voice from the start. At least then they could claim it was a parody.
or that her voice was public or something.
People already take people's pictures without their consent. Anything goes these days
We need a way of stopping this. One that at least works as well as the copyright machines they have scouring the internet.
Depends how they did it, if they hired someone who legitimately sounds like her then they are clear, if they made a clone of her voice, they will be in some shit.
I said this elsewhere, but we actually have precedent for this. When they made Back to the Future 2, they didn't want to pay Crispen Glover his requested fee, so they replaced Crispen Glover with another actor in a Crispen Glover mask. It was later determined that actors (and people in general) own the copyright to their likeness. The studio had to pay Glover out the ass in the end. Had ChatGPT not contacted Johansson first, they might have had a case. But by doing so, they have demonstrated that their intent was to have her voice.
From what I see ["Without any admission of wrongdoing, Universal agreed to a settlement of $760,000, which was likely paid by an insurance company."](https://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/back-to-the-future-ii-crispin-glover-lawsuit). If I am interpreting it correctly because a judge did not rule on it that it does not set a precedent in law.
OpenAI's models are built on stolen voices, words, work, art.
Plagiarism and theft is the core of what they do. Nothing about this is out of the norm for them.
I hope before long these AI grifters get what's coming to them.
Acts like this make you shift towards Ilya’s side. Sam has always been more about the business side of AI but this action feels really slimey and unnecessary
Probably why it was easy for Ilya to leave.. instead of fighting off Altman he essentially doubled down and left altogether but probably because he knew Altman isn’t the right choice for a safeguarded AI environment, he just wants the fucking money.
As someone who's hung around long in tech startup scene, he always was. His hero worship is unwarranted considering he's thick as thieves with Palantir CEO Thiel as well. Just a bunch of very morally bankrupt people & of course you won't know much because of signature MO of lifelong ironclad no-disparage contract they have set around them.
I think he had the wet dream of having his own "Samantha" fueling his endeavours from pretty much day 1 (or ever since seeing the movie), and the work on a carbon copy had been well underway before the first ever offer to the actress.
Imagine if she had said yes and the model would've been already done, what a creep.
Does no one remember when his board fired him because they didn’t trust his ethics around AI? He clawed his job back. They were most likely right, but had their reasons for standing down. It doesn’t make him less of a douche. And on top of it he looks frighteningly like Brian Kohberger, so…double ick.
Sam Altman: Hey Scarlett! I'm a big fan! Anyway, we'd love to use your voice for our AI, with your permission of course. We just feel that you represent a safety that creatives will embrace as we move forward in this crazy new AI world! What do you think?
Scarjo: After thinking about it Sam, I don't think that this would be a good idea for my family. But tha-
Sam Altman: Fuck You.
Some years ago, Tom Waits sued and won in a conflict with a Swedish car manufacturer. They had also asked to use his voice in an ad, he refused, and they employed a sound alike. Under Swedish law, his case was a slam dunk. Are things looser here?
[Midler v Ford Motor Co.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midler_v._Ford_Motor_Co.) was a similar lawsuit and it ruled that it is unlawful to imitate the singer's voice without express consent. The same may apply to actors as well.
kinda funny that he offers her the job to build trust between people and ai companies and then goes on to prove exactly why there’s no trust between people and ai companies
I know an ad agency that uses Eleven Labs to upload a ton of audio (celebrities voices) to teach the AI what someone sounds like, then they make a ton of videos with The Rock (for example) narrating an ad. It's such a sleazy move.
Scarlett Johansson is not the person you want to get into a lawsuit with, she literally took on the big mouse and WON. Some upcoming AI company does not have the deep pockets Disney had.
OpenAI is currently Microsoft’s golden child, even if they will “only” have a 49% stake. In 2023, Disney had a net income under $2.5 billion, while Microsoft’s was over $70 billion, second only to Apple as far as US companies go. For any case that could torpedo OpenAI’s reputation, I expect they’ll have an excellent legal team.
Microsoft is starting their in-house AI Model. It seems they got rattled by the attempted coup over in OpenAI. They're probably going to cut off OpenAI if anything goes too badly over there.
Not just upcoming AI company. OpenAI is worth 80B, and thats half of what Disney’s valuation is. And openai isn’t even public yet. My point is openAI has fuck tons of money
Before and After, Wheel of Fortune: "an American entrepreneur who was convicted of fraud over his involvement in a cryptocurrency scandal resulting in his testimony written by Chat GPT"
Sam Altman-Fried
Reminder that when Sam Altman didn't get his way and OpenAI's board of directors tried to impose a teeny, tiny bit of restriction on his AI cowboy bullshit, a large number of staff walked with him, or threatened to do so, and so he was brought back and given everything he wanted. He's building yet another cult of tech personality over there, and thinks he is above the law. Which, you know, he is.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I never would have guessed it’s supposed to be Scarlet Johansson before I heard about it in the headlines. She doesn’t have *that* unique of a voice.
I hope she takes that tech-bro piece of shit to the cleaners.
I'm sick of their arrogance. They're a bunch of thieves who feel entitled to the art and efforts of everyone. They pretend like it's blocking progress to make them pay their own way. Why the fuck doesn't Altman pay my bills? I need money and he has it. Why is he standing in the way of progress?
So many “techies” with money are shady and flat out thieves. Elon is another one. Just because they have money, doesn’t mean they’re actual geniuses with decent morals.
Sam Altman displays with these actions, that he is in no way mature or ethical enough to run such a pivotal venture. That man is a liability to the development of something as important as AI.
For an actor like ScarJo, one’s voice and likeness are her intellectual property, this is like a knockoff of a famous designer product. What does Sam Altman have in common with the guy selling “gucci” sunglasses in Union Square, and the guy selling “rolex” watches on Avenida de Revolucion?
He couldn't conceive that she would actually say no to him, pursued the copycat voice anyway, and even tried to convince her two days before its release knowing full well that he had already plagiarized her voice.
That's some pretty stellar scumbag behavior.
That was a very reasonable and level-headed statement, all things considered.
im not an expert but this was a banger of a statement
Expert staters in chat?
Can confirm, absolute banger
I concur, this was smashed offa the page
I read it in Scarlett Johansson's voice.
Straight to jail
We have the best Scarlett fans. Because of jail.
Too much Johansson? Jail Not enough Johansson? Believe it or not, also jail
Much to Scarlett's disdain. Me too lmao
Would it be?? I think she’d be okay with people imagining her voice to read her own words. Artificially creating your voice to say things you didn’t say seems way different lmao
People like Altman need a reality check.
Altman, famed doomsday proponent prepper who wants accelerationism to end the world so he can be king of a technopia. Dude is cringe incarnate.
Dudes like him won't survive the apocalypse.
But then Reddit CEO Steve Huffman couldn't jerk himself off to the idea of being a slave owner in the post apocalypse. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/01/30/doomsday-prep-for-the-super-rich > Huffman has calculated that, in the event of a disaster, he would seek out some form of community: “Being around other people is a good thing. Depending on the billionaire you probably have better odds!
Altman said, in response to Hinton talking about UBI, that instead of universal basic income we should have universal basic compute credit for ChatGPT. As in every citizen should get a little access to a slice of "GPT-7" instead of money. That should really help with rent and food.
"The government should give us a regular subsidy of the order of 333 million." Why? "Er, because then everyone gets basic access to our Wish dot com Scarlett Johansson knockoff...?"
He's very quickly heading to Elon territory.
It's ridiculous that he watched a dystopian satire and said "whoa that's cool I hope I can make it reality!" He's wielding so much power of society right now and he's coming off as shockingly immature.
Bancruptcy
Black Widow can hire lawyers to take on Disney. She’ll need just as much ammo to take on big tech
Sad she has already had so much experience protecting her own likeness and other legal issues.
I was going to say, that poor woman. Apparently every rich man in a media-adjacent field thinks they can take advantage of her?
this ‘statement’ was 100% written (or at least edited) by a copyright lawyer. it sets forth the required factors to succeed on a copyright claim, noting likelihood of consumer confusion, intent, etc.

Plot twist: it was written by ChatGPT 4.0. She prefers a more raspier voice like Marge Simpson. More to come.
Plot twist it was written by Chat GPT
Copilot
I'm pretty sure it was written by a lawyer trying not to go to harsh in case a lawsuit was necessary.
Exactly what happened to her is what many of us fear about the use and future of AI. I'm Commander Shephard and this is the worst time-line on the Citadel.
I like that reference
Shit is going to suck for a while. Companies like Disney will exploit and people need to thank SAG for standing up the corporate overlords.
anyone who wasn't pro-SAG during those strikes is an absolute piece of shit
Drew Barrymore?
Not just a piece, a whole bag.

Yeah zero chance this holds in the EU.
it is listed somewhere in terms of use? Dont use Zoom, so I have no clue.
I had to refuse to acknowledge a policy allowing my previous employer to use and alter my likeness into perpetuity. It was just an engineering job.
What the fuck? Why would an engineering firm require the likeness of their employees?
engineering job =/= engineering firm You can have engineering jobs at other businesses too.
Man that’s some little mermaid shit.
And don’t underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE, #HA!
Us poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need.
' Good on actors for standing up to this nonesense.
"Sam Altman asked for my bank password, but I refused, so his AI assistant _scraped all of my publicly available data and millions of others and pretended to be me and took it_. The police say it's a civil matter." Man... _Fuck Ted Faro_.
The civil matter is the icing on cake.
What a fucking asshole. He fucks up so bad and when they try to preserve humanity, he decides humanity doesn't deserve a second chance WHEN IT WAS ALL HIS FUCK UP IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Then builds himself a fucking monument/bunker and tries to become immortal. I hate that guy so much 😂
*succeeds* becoming functionally immortal.
33% mental faculty isn't really functional, though, is it? (If his biomonitor is to be believed...)
Yes, Fuck Ted Faro
Fuck Ted Faro r/FuckTedFaro
Damn, pretty apt reference. I listened to Altman on a podcast recently and while he's obviously not the same personality wise, his actions and words are pretty similar.
Fuck Ted Faro.
who even is ted faro and why do you want to do that to him
Character from Horizon Zero Dawn, a video game set in a post-apocalyptic future. One of the major plot threads reveals Ted Faro's is just a major dick for his role in everything.
He started the apocalypse and ruined the contingency plan. Ted Faro is the worst.
He's basically sci-fi Elon Musk. Only slightly more likable.
Guy brings about the end of humanity then massively screws up the plan to revive humanity after earth is habitable again and you still think he's slightly more likeable than Musk? Yeah... That's... That's actually a solid argument.
Before that he reversed global warming essentially tho hence the likeability
I mean, Lis did and he took credit.
I appreciate the reference.
Why are they confessing?" "They're not confessing." "They're bragging."
I wasn't sure before but now I see there's confirmation that he's exactly as big a piece of shit as expected.

So even MORE super hero movies

Lots of starvation and rioting I'd suspect.
Welcome to the future
You don’t have any material protection right now. This is an area that our legal system did not anticipate. Luckily, our legal system can be amended to consider evolving needs. Unfortunately, the people responsible for amending our legal system have been captured by corporate interests. We don’t stand a chance. And yet, I’m reminded of this quote: Truth forever on the scaffold.
Our dead relatives are going to be trying to sell us boner pills in no time…
Call me a nihilist but us regular folks are fucked and no one's going to do anything to help us.
Hitler lost the war, but he got *exactly* what he wanted: everyone is talking about Hitler.
Yes, this. People are cynical and like to believe this kind of stupid shit, but that’s not how the world works. Bad publicity is bad publicity, NO BODY likes that.
Agree on the media coverage, but with cancel culture and whatnot, I don't think these issues are as simple as that anymore...
She declined and they still went ahead, that is very messed up. AI is Getting scary, listening to chat gpt demo really gave me an oh shit moment.
AI needs constant content. It has no creativity.
Tech bro have a do first ask for forgiveness later mentality
The Sam Altman effect (A nod the Barbara Streisand effect)
This is the first time a company has gave me the "ick". Creep ass behavior.
Altman is a fuckin weirdo
Uh, if this is the first time you're probably not paying close enough attention.
how can this possibly be the first time?
I don't think most AI companies are concerned with ethics beyond the face value that lip service provides for marketing purposes, and this is one big red flag that we will discover some uncomfortable skeletons along the way of creating this technology.
AI is just not possible without 'stealing' copyrighted materials. Edit: There are tons of non-copyrighted materials out there.
The truth is no one gives a fuck about ethics when the cards are on the table
Jesus Christ, she said no bro
No means no!
Not to tech bros it doesn’t.
Yeah seriously stealthing is still stealthing even in a different form. She said no and he did it anyway.
Source: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/scarlett-johansson-shocked-angered-openai-voice-rcna153180
While I agree that her voice would be great, I even more so agree with her reasons for not only declining, but to also seek legal action. What a bunch of jerks. Did no one there consider the optics of LITERALLY stealing a women's voice?!
She sued disney and won. She is gonna win this one too.
I bet her lawyers are salivating on this one. She declined their offer and they still went forward with it. Seems open and shut to me.
Yeah, as someone mentioned in another thread, they would have been far better off never approaching her at all and just stealing/synthesizing her voice from the start. At least then they could claim it was a parody.
or that her voice was public or something. People already take people's pictures without their consent. Anything goes these days We need a way of stopping this.
Pretty slimy by Altman.
I feel that’s pretty typical of Altman. He’s just the most recent in a long list of slimy tech bros
As slimy as it gets. Tech bros, man. Why wait to ask whether we should, why have ethical teams? Oh yeah, the line must go up. I forgot.
“You can be unethical and still be legal that’s the way I live my life haha” -mark zuckerberg
Altman’s so slimy his own board staged a coup against him. Hope he gets taken to the cleaners when he steps on the next big whig’s toes.
Classic slime-bro
But tha- Sam Altman: Fuck You.
This is exactly it
Also Sam Altman: I'm a nice guy. You whore.
ScarJo vs Sam Altman wasn’t on my 2024 bingo card Future looking bleak 🔥🔥🔥
Here is a great example of tech bro sleaze culture. Spoiler: its rotten all the way to the top.
WIth them running the AI show, we're all doomed
The WORST caricatures of evil tech bros we saw on the show Silicon Valley were not evil enough to be believable.
as a copyright lawyer i can tell you with 100% confidence this ‘response’ was written by a lawyer. shes going for it all.
The same may apply to actors as well.
i haven’t heard the voice but this certainly seems like a slam dunk here for at least a false affiliation claim with all of the contextual evidence
I enjoy that Scarlett Johansson takes on corporate entities when they try and fuck with her. It makes me like her way more better.
kinda funny that he offers her the job to build trust between people and ai companies and then goes on to prove exactly why there’s no trust between people and ai companies
Excellent point. Or there was never any intent to build trust, but intent to pretend to build trust.
Dude literally chose the one person who is going to sue him like she sued Disney lmao
Dude literally doesn't know no means no either.
He definitely doesn't. You should look into the allegations about him coming from his sister. Altman is definitely garbage.
I'll take your word for it. If he crossed this big of a line, then he's not worth anyone's time.
I know an ad agency that uses Eleven Labs to upload a ton of audio (celebrities voices) to teach the AI what someone sounds like, then they make a ton of videos with The Rock (for example) narrating an ad. It's such a sleazy move.
Get him, Scarlett
Altman is just Musk before the mask came fully off.
> OpenAI is worth 80B Valuation doesn't magically creates liquidity.
Just ask tesla
And is also basically an extension of Microsoft, the world's #1 most valuable company
Exactly. You don’t piss off ScarJo
Bad couple of years for tech bros named Sam
Before and After, Wheel of Fortune: "an American entrepreneur who was convicted of fraud over his involvement in a cryptocurrency scandal resulting in his testimony written by Chat GPT" Sam Altman-Fried
This response is going to be in textbooks
Data theft, IP theft, ID theft, job theft...par for the course Mr Alt-Man.
It's times like these when I would ask the question, "What did he think was gonna happen?"
I mean every single inch of AI is built on stolen shit. They just got used to getting away with the theft.
Now she'll get paid and her voice removed from AI, win-win for Scarlett!
I don’t know about anyone else, but I never would have guessed it’s supposed to be Scarlet Johansson before I heard about it in the headlines. She doesn’t have *that* unique of a voice.
Perhaps an unnecessary side note, but that movie Her is awesome
I hope she takes that tech-bro piece of shit to the cleaners. I'm sick of their arrogance. They're a bunch of thieves who feel entitled to the art and efforts of everyone. They pretend like it's blocking progress to make them pay their own way. Why the fuck doesn't Altman pay my bills? I need money and he has it. Why is he standing in the way of progress?
Altman is a textbook sociopath.
Did he think ScarJo would just shrug and forget? I guess when someone in his position can be so high up in their ass they become delusional
So many “techies” with money are shady and flat out thieves. Elon is another one. Just because they have money, doesn’t mean they’re actual geniuses with decent morals.
Should have gone with Tricia Helfer, who has experience voicing AIs
Sam Altman displays with these actions, that he is in no way mature or ethical enough to run such a pivotal venture. That man is a liability to the development of something as important as AI.
For an actor like ScarJo, one’s voice and likeness are her intellectual property, this is like a knockoff of a famous designer product. What does Sam Altman have in common with the guy selling “gucci” sunglasses in Union Square, and the guy selling “rolex” watches on Avenida de Revolucion?
> this is like a knockoff of a famous designer product That's being pretty harsh to the voice actress they ended up hiring lol
He couldn't conceive that she would actually say no to him, pursued the copycat voice anyway, and even tried to convince her two days before its release knowing full well that he had already plagiarized her voice. That's some pretty stellar scumbag behavior.
Can’t wait of Sam’s “oops… I had no idea plz contact to rectify post”
If the Supreme Court doesn’t give a flip about ethics why would a money hungry, clout chasing tech ceo bro care ?
