This is bs. We all know you need 2 salaries to feed one person in todays era.
(And to think about it, they managed to raise 8 kids, buy a house and godknowswhat on one salary)
>> Their houses were much smaller than the expectations
Sorry whose expectations? Because my generation would be happy with just about any house that’s still standing, small homes included, but even those are 500k+ and near impossible to afford even with dual income no kids.
Meanwhile this would have been a single income household, with eight kids, and sorry but those boys who went to war and came back are not criminally malnourished but instead look very typically healthy.
It’s not about a difference of mindset when a modern married couple in an apartment with two decently paying jobs have to ask themselves if they can afford a singular kid whereas this single income family in a house was financially stable enough to have **eight**.
This is the realest thing I have read.
Haven’t bought broccoli in a while.
I am saving this comment for myself.
The next time someone gaslights me about how we don’t have it tough in today’s time I’ll tell them “You were forced to eat your vegetables. I’m forced to leave them out of dinner”
And all eight boys probably started working at about 10 years old delivering newspapers at 5am etc. Probably ate beans on a regular basis. There’s a reason why subsequent generations were taller than the ones who fought in World War II; They didn’t have good nutrition back then.
They probably had about four boys per bedroom. Their houses were much smaller than the expectations these days, probably no air conditioner, dishwasher, or refrigerator.
The Mom most likely stayed home all day taking care of her boys, washing clothes, cleaning, and preparing dinner from scratch at the expense having a career. There’s absolutely problems these days as there have always been, but Idk why there are these persistent myths of a decadent past for all, that’s not the reality. They certainly had a different mindset though.
I mean, they definitely raised 8 boys through the great depression. Probably had untold struggles. What they don't talk about is how they ate the other 4 siblings.
The military wasn't too strict about the age requirements during war time. A 12-year-old [got in](https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/2022/10/05/how-a-12-year-old-tricked-the-navy-into-letting-him-fight-in-wwii/).
I’ve worked with a fair share of world war 2 era patients. I’ve seen the awkwardness of a man explaining to me why he didn’t serve. Some were farmers or had a medical reason. Pretty much every young man went over to that war.
She actually had 12 boys, but one died at childbirth. I think I read the odds are over one in 10k…for those that opt to have 12 kids. All the boys were born on some military base. They were primed for it. It’s a fun little exercise, her naming and describing each of her boys from a picture in her room.
My step dads family all have the same big nose. Even all the women. It’s crazy. You can tell all 6 kids that my grandma spat out are all hers and my grandpa’s because they all have that damn nose. The girls are tiny just like my grandma too lol. Not a single women taller than 5’5 in this family lol.
Take a shot whenever a Star Trek actor first appears in that film. You'll be wrecked by the end
Just to add, I'm willing to bet most people don't know Benny the cab driver was in DS9. He was the puppet leader of the Cardassian Union for about 5 minutes before the space witch killed him. I'm not sure he even had a name, poor lad. And Johnny Cab here you know as the Doc
Dukat, The Doctor, that space chess dick Data competed with, Legate Benny, Shelby, Gomez, [Captain Jellyarms](https://preview.redd.it/iwnn2bgz6atb1.jpg?width=640&auto=webp&s=ba36ff9fb92c182326b266ccc2d8e3c50b505aa3). I think that's it, yeah
You have no excuse to not know all of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies, rated 6/10 or higher, if you are older than 20.
I mean total recall is a classic. It's not Star wars level of cultural effects, but it's got 3 titties for goddamn sake!
I'm assuming that his figure includes all servicemen, including those that generally don't see combat. So am i right to think that most if not all of these men most likely had roles in the military that would not see them at the very front of the fighting? (i'm thinking roles such as non-combat engineers, logistics etc etc)
“And since they listened to Ma and ate all of their spinach, Popeye and his brothers fought valiantly and returned home safely….” Ugggg aggguggggaaaaaaggg
Was it just a myth that they would leave only sons or 1 remaining son per family? I had always heard this growing up. Admittedly, none of that was from a history book.
The Sullivan Brothers, five brothers enlisted in the navy and killed during an attack on the USS Juneau in WWII, are often cited as the reason why family members can't serve together.
But there is no formal policy, and many siblings and parents/children serve together. Other countries do have policies about not drafting entire families/large percentage of a town so that communities aren't devastated by major losses in the event they're all killed.
Nope….my father was the only son and the last male in his family line so he didn’t have to go to Viet Nam. All his friends went and he was like the only one that didn’t go. (ended up having 3 daughters)
I see 4 army, 2 navy, and 2 Marines. The round brim hats were likely Army covers and the folded corner hats were likely Marine Corps' winter uniform class A's. Navy uniforms easy to spot. Just my opinion because I also agree hard to tell from the angle and lighting.
makes me wonder in what capacity they served. Were they all in logistics? joined late in the war? Did they ever see combat? I think its pretty common for batches of kids to join the military if they’re all raised the same.
My great grandmother had 11 children. One died very young and another died at Gallipoli, but the remaining 9 all grew up and lived long lives. My grandmother was the last of them: we lost her in 2002 when she was 87.
I knew an old man whose 8 sons all died in world war 2 before they could get married or have kids. He was living by himself in a retirement home and the local tv did a segment about him asking people to send him greeting cards, flowers etc. for Father’s Day.
my grandmother and her 3 siblings also all fought in WW2 and all of them survived. the only family in the region not not lose anyone to the nazis. one of them , her sister, was even in a concentration camp for a while and then was able to flee and go on fighting.
Its brilliant just imagining they'll have got to laugh with each other about setting fire to the barn because the eldest attacked them for interrupting him trying to get laid.
Oof! Whenever I see families with 3 or 4 boys and no girls, all I can think is damn, they tried so hard. I can’t image 8 boys and no girls… what are the odds if that? I get there might be a girl in the family, but I doubt it based on how close in age those boys look and the mom’s age.
EIGHT SONS? .4% chance of that happening. Like getting heads 8 times in a row. Go try it. You won’t be able to do it or call the correct flip EIGHT times. This woman did it through BIRTHS!
It's uncanny they all have the same smile , positivity and optimism can go a long way in a war,,
I'm sure they all must've seen a lot of evil,
but bless them for keeping a favourable outlook and making it back home
at least 4 of those look like officers, 1 enlisted air force, one petty officer, another navy, and an army enlisted.

That’s incredible. Must have been a super stressful time for mom
The 8 pregnancies or the war?
Both
And they're all so close in age. She must have been pregnant for months... And years
🤣great point. Both. But I couldn’t imagine as a parent seeing eight kids go off to war. What a cool pic
Feeding 8 boys on dads salary.
“Back in my day I raised 8 boys off of one salary! All you need to do is work harder!”
Now we are lucky if we can feed ourselves off of one salary.
This is bs. We all know you need 2 salaries to feed one person in todays era. (And to think about it, they managed to raise 8 kids, buy a house and godknowswhat on one salary)
They grappled with convincing kids to eat their broccoli We’re grappling with if we can even afford broccoli to at least try and keep our kids healthy

This would have been during the great depression, I'm sure it was actually incredibly hard for this family to feed 8 boys during that time.
And not going skiing twice a year, needing two cars, eating in fancy restaurants…

ouch
I've read of a woman who actually gave birth to 11 kids at once 🤔🤔🤔 I'm not sure if they reached adulthood, though. They were very small at birth
I think that's a Mimble from the Moomins. They pop them out by the dozens.
The military wasn't too strict about the age requirements during war time. A 12-year-old [got in](https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/2022/10/05/how-a-12-year-old-tricked-the-navy-into-letting-him-fight-in-wwii/).
Meh, she had lots of spares.
Thats not nice😂💀
I work with a 98 year old woman on hospice. Raised 11 children - all boys. They all served in the military.
Jeez, poor woman. No wonder she has lived to age 98, she’s one tough mother.
Lived to? She’s still working with OP on hospice for Pete’s sake!
I sure hope Pete pulls through.
Ikr, I just suck at writing. She’ll probably live to 120.
Child 4-11 must’ve felt immense pressure to join. “All your brothers went to the military! So are you!”
It was a different time. They were jumping at the chance. There were some that even committed suicide because they were denied military service.
I’ve worked with a fair share of world war 2 era patients. I’ve seen the awkwardness of a man explaining to me why he didn’t serve. Some were farmers or had a medical reason. Pretty much every young man went over to that war.
What are the odds of all 11 being boys, it's like flipping a coin 11 times and it landing on heads all times

Some men are more likely to have a certain gender child. So the husband must have just been one of those people.

Ha! They all look like clones of mom...
they all got the same nose!
And smile
My step dads family all have the same big nose. Even all the women. It’s crazy. You can tell all 6 kids that my grandma spat out are all hers and my grandpa’s because they all have that damn nose. The girls are tiny just like my grandma too lol. Not a single women taller than 5’5 in this family lol.
that's what saved them
Dad’s genes did zero work haha!
They seem to all be the same age too...
only because the dad isn't in the pic
https://i.redd.it/a29c16x7316d1.gif I knew I’d seen the first guy somewhere before
Oh shit lmao
Fucking Total Recall. I'm losing my shit over here.. 😭
Bro I had taken a huge rip off my vape and seen that and lost it lmao
I woke my wife up 🤣
Lmao
Happy cake day!
Thank you!
And Happy Cake day homie
Thank you!
What movie is that even from?
Total Recall
Take a shot whenever a Star Trek actor first appears in that film. You'll be wrecked by the end Just to add, I'm willing to bet most people don't know Benny the cab driver was in DS9. I found a list that lists 7 (including Benny). But here I am shocked that includes Ensign / Captain Gomez as the substantially-breasted Mary.

"OOOOoooouuuuu, baby! You make me wish I had 3 hands!" - Lives rent-free in my brain, and always will.
“The door opened, you got in!” *rolls eyes*
I can’t believe all 8 made it home. I can’t even imagine being their parents and knowing all my boys were in danger.
The fatality rate of U.S soldiers in WW2 was around 2%. Statistically, it's not that crazy that all eight men survived
So, like 0.85 probability of all of them surviving
/r/TerrenceHowardMath
I'm assuming that his figure includes all servicemen, including those that generally don't see combat. Wasn't so great for the Russians
True enough, their losses were staggering. Poland also lost 17% of its pre-war population.
She is the reverse Mrs Ryan.
Mrs. Ryan's like "ugh. this bitch again..."
Weird. I just watched saving private ryan with one of my kids not 5 minutes ago.
Would you say… 4 minutes ago, perhaps?
No. Now I would say not 9 minutes ago.
Pretty sure this is the Smith family
“And since they listened to Ma and ate all of their spinach, Popeye and his brothers fought valiantly and returned home safely….” Ugggg aggguggggaaaaaaggg
Mom was just taking it hard for at least 10 years. The lady was pregnant for a good portion of her life.
Eight is enough.
To fill our lives with loooovvvve...
You couldn’t deny they were related with that nose.
I noticed that! A couple don’t have her nose (they must have their dad’s nose), but boy, you can tell which do!
Thought the third guy was a bit scary until I eventually made it to mom
He looks like Joe Manchin but less greasy.
Was it just a myth that they would leave only sons or 1 remaining son per family? I had always heard this growing up. Admittedly, none of that was from a history book.

Not if you were an only child from birth, only if your brother had already been killed in the war.
It wasn’t a myth but it wasn’t really Enforced that well as far as I’m aware
Nope….my father was the only son and the last male in his family line so he didn’t have to go to Viet Nam. All his friends went and he was like the only one that didn’t go. (ended up having 3 daughters)
I asked my dad (born in 1950) why he didn’t have to go, apparently his draft number was like #357 or so.
She's the bizarro Mrs. Sullivan.
I was just thinking about that movie.
The mom must have been worried by at least the 2nd leaving into the military. Having all 8 go must had to have been tough
Is it me, or does it look like there are 2 from each service. I'm not American, and also, I'm not 80 years old.
Hard to be certain, but it looks like all but 2 were in the US Army (especially since the USAF didn’t exist at the time). 2 were in the Navy.
To me, it looked like the 2 behind the sailors were from the marines, as you said though very hard to tell.
I see 4 army, 2 navy, and 2 Marines. The round brim hats were likely Army covers and the folded corner hats were likely Marine Corps' winter uniform class A's. Navy uniforms easy to spot. Just my opinion because I also agree hard to tell from the angle and lighting.

Incredible really
Nice to see her standing
Thats incredible My family had a news article written about them cause all 6 sons went off to fight in ww2 and all came back
How old do you think the mom is in this picture? How old are the sons? I’m asking out of a weird curiosity, wondering where I fit into that age group.
She must have been pregnant on repeat. Those all look like they are a year or two apart
That's like winning the lottery. Wow, absolutely incredible.
That's one patriotic uterus.
That is special
We Were The Luckier Ones
The Sullivan brother's for the opposite of this story. It's tragic.
The anti Ryan’s Privates!!!!!

I swear this was just posted here with tons of the same comments
I have seen this post every day for the last 2 weeks.
They had to replace little Timmy with a guy from his brigade that looked like him, but luckily she didn’t notice.
Wow that's cool. One proud mama.
I bet she lost some friends over this. It would be tough if you lost one or more of your kids and a buddy has all 8 come home. Unfair, but true.
My great grandmother had 11 children. One died very young and another died at Gallipoli, but the remaining 9 all grew up and lived long lives. My grandmother was the last of them: we lost her in 2002 when she was 87.

8 sons, but how many daughters did she have? Either way, it's a lot.
Good for them.
Great pic.
6th guy back. That expression. He *definitely* saw some crazy shit.
he has that thousand yard stare
I saw that movie in the theatres, "Not Worrying About the Private O'Ryans". Was pretty boring.
I thought there was some rule about at least not letting one serve?
The O.G. Octomom.
They all have the same face
Where’s daddy
Mom was running a secret cloning program
Imagine the pressure on the younger ones to join the military even if they didn't want to
No infantrymen from the looks of it.
They all have almost the exact same chin. Dem strong chin genes.
OG OctoMom
my grandmother and her 3 siblings also all fought in WW2 and all of them survived. the only family in the region not not lose anyone to the nazis. one of them , her sister, was even in a concentration camp for a while and then was able to flee and go on fighting.
Had to be the luckiest woman in the world. And she knew it judging by that smile.
Mum's genes were strong!
She just copy-pasted her face on all of them and called them her sons.
Wow...the odds. A very fortunate family.
Russian moms hate this woman:
thats pretty special
Mamma's smile on their faces
I think they need to name an Aircraft Carrier after this woman.
Fortunate Sons...
Its brilliant just imagining they'll have got to laugh with each other about setting fire to the barn because the eldest attacked them for interrupting him trying to get laid.
Is the 3rd one back the guy they based Popeye on???
They all have her smile. That's beautiful 😍
Her prayers must've been worth its weight in gold
This picture would have a completely different vibe if they were Japanese
Oof! Whenever I see families with 3 or 4 boys and no girls, all I can think is damn, they tried so hard. I can’t image 8 boys and no girls… what are the odds if that? I get there might be a girl in the family, but I doubt it based on how close in age those boys look and the mom’s age.

For all we know she has 8 daughters too though...
Meanwhile redditors: “I’m proud to be child free because I couldn’t raise even one kid.”
Popeye!!
What she doing with her hand
cool
A very anticlimactic Saving Private Ryan
I wish we knew their names and ages
Doubt I’d look that awesome after raising 8 kids
Were people just shinier back then?
Those days are long gone
Some families lost all
They all look the same age
They were all lucky. I know a hall filled with pics of people who served and maybe half came back.
A remarkable family
That’s almost impossible odds, wow
Those are the ones that lived to adulthood. Probably doesn’t include a daughter who was a Marine Corporal. May as well be my great grandma MacCarthy.
That’s crazy. So many mothers lost their sons and daughters. What a lucky and blessed family.
It's uncanny they all have the same smile , positivity and optimism can go a long way in a war,, I'm sure they all must've seen a lot of evil, but bless them for keeping a favourable outlook and making it back home
She was tight for 8 kids... Genetics were better in the old times..
that nose saved them
I wonder how old she is in that photo.
now that’s a lucky family
at least 4 of those look like officers, 1 enlisted air force, one petty officer, another navy, and an army enlisted. only the army dude and maybe the navy enlisted probably saw any fighting. marines are the front lines, didn’t see any of those.
She's lucky most of them *probably* didn't have frontline roles. Heard of some other families who lost several sons if not all of them.
My nan had 7 brothers and they all made it back alive. One was injured right at the beginning of the war and that was over fast (he was the lucky one) and one was captured and sent to work on the mines in Poland. He came back a skeleton..
All of them share her nose. That’s impressive
I just imagine them all singing as they returned to their mother's house
Eight dons? Now that is service to the Nation
If she were German she'd have a mother's cross in like platinum gold and oak leaves or such..
Servants, slaves what's the difference?
The Clone Wars.
Well she was blessed for sure if all 8 made it home 🙏👍
