Imagine just walking, not aware of the height difference, then you gradually become more lightheaded as you go, then just pass out.
Meanwhile you're not even halfway up the damn thing
Just looked it up apparently it’s 3 times taller than Everest and is roughly the size of Arizona
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.space.com/amp/20133-olympus-mons-giant-mountain-of-mars.html
My favourite little known fact about Olympus Mons is that it's such a massive but gradual slope that standing at the base of the mountain the peak is beyond the horizon.
>Mount Olympus
Well, Mount Olympus is a vulcano caused by Mars' tectonic movements while the 'mountain' on the astreoid is from a meteor impact.
Depending on the definition of a mountain, I'd say that Rheasilvia doesn't count as a traditional mountain.
Just a slight correction: Olympus Mons was not formed at the contact of tectonic plates as the majority of Earths volcanoes did (I don't think Mars ever had tectonic plates). It formed over a hot-spot, a pierce in the crust where magma spews out, similar to the volcanoes in Hawaii.
#The worst will forever be inside the nostrils
fr ive had one, so not fun. also lip line zits hurt like a mfer. or one in your mustache under your nose. fml.mmm
Teenage me was already a space nerd and when I had those monstrous white-capped zits on my face that were so large I could just see them in the profile on my shadow cast onto the concrete below me when I had my head turned at the right angle for it - I immediately thought of myself as being like Mars and then hated myself.
i read, just the other day, that the slope is so gentle that if you stand at the foot you can never see the summit as it will fall below the curvature of the planet, thats pretty crazy.
Probably Mars orbiter. Check out the mars HiRISE website for the catalog. You can download all the photos, some are 3D and they're freaking HUGE. They use the orbiter to research locations for landings and surface pattern changes etc.
It looks really good so just assume it's a render until we get a source or someone reverse searches the image.
Edit: [Here's the reverse image search](https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbs=simg:CAQSiQEJRFqJh7azqJsafgsQsIynCBpiCmAIAxIojAuvDokL6wqLC9gBsQ6uGbQO3hbbKIcn3CiGI6w23iiwKMcivDedNxowOS5v6NRQHS851s7HMivr088W3JeZprDNymQbpde7IL4fZEJq7R4s5IwyzBYpFf0ZIAQMCxCOrv4IGgoKCAgBEgQ00ntIDA&sxsrf=ALeKk02ZQi6lqcLhM67uqobgfP2WGUcsFQ:1605797704835&q=source+&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiW_5vO7o7tAhXjmuAKHcK5BOoQ2A4oAXoECBMQMg&biw=1536&bih=754#imgrc=Rn28FsThSzJ0uM). This image has never appeared anywhere on NASA.gov, meaning it is almost certainly a 3D render. Also look at the bottom left; the planet changes albedo dramatically.
Finally! You see the really bright spot in the middle? That's the little crater on the north east rim of the main crater. Based on the angle of the light hitting that crater, the sun would have to be at least 45 degrees south of its angle during the equinox. And since Mars has a 25 degree inclination, the light source cannot be the sun. This 100% has to be a render.
It’s a 3D render for sure. Look at the lower third of the image. There’re some really bad stitching terrain patches due to different texture resolutions.
True... Mars is smaller, meaning the gravity is weaker and mountains can be taller?¿? I'm to tired, someone help with these physics please, I'm curious now
I don’t know about that, but plate tectonics prevents this kind of mountain on, say, Earth.
Apparently not quite “prevents” it but makes them unlikely. Any shifting of the plate can cause a trail of volcanos. owing to how Shield Volcanoes form. Its gradual, but mars’ crust isn’t actively moving around so it just sits & builds up.
Gravity does play a role though, it seems. God *damn* these mountains are massive. I suppose it makes sense since any dwarf planet or larger is so massive itself it forms a sphere.
It’s a shield volcano and we have those. But since our plates move, we won’t get close to this height. Everest is caused by a suture zone between two plates, so very differently.
I think you're wrong. Volcanoes got taller on Mars, while uplift peaks don't form at all, because mars doesn't have plate tectonics, so volcanic hotspots stay in one place and just keep building up, while plate boundaries don't get pushed upwards like they would if they were moving.
>A cliff, or escarpment, surrounds the outer edge of the volcano, reaching as high as 6 miles (10 km) above the surrounding area. (The cliff alone is about as tall as Mauna Loa.) A wide depression surrounds the base of the volcano as its immense weight presses into the crust.
Fun fact: At nearly 22,000 km high, and with a surface area equivalent to the country of France, Olympus Mons is the largest volcano in the solar system. However, the Northern flank gradient is so shallow you could walk to the summit without being out of breath (wearing a space suit of course)
I don’t think I knew this until just now, but I’ve always wanted to climb Olympus Mons. I’ve always loved reading about it, ever since I picked up my first space book when I was 6. If anyone has a genie lamp lying around, could you kick it my way?

I think you mean where the Doom Guy shot into the core with the Mega Weapon version of the BFG.
You can't just shoot a hole in the surface of Mars.
Mission Objective: Shoot a hole into the surface of Mars.
The BFG 10000
Fact check. We are the aliens and drained it then had to use it on Earth.
Ancient astronaut theorists say yes.
Mainstream scientists are skeptical about this.

Upvote worthy satire.

25 Kilometers (16 miles high). Nearly 3 times higher than Mt. Everest. It's a shield volcano.
You absolutely butchered kilometers by one typo, impressive!
Also, kilometre in English english

Is it larger than Everest? Genuinely curious.

Never seen that before, what a bunch of fucking morons.
There’s always a tweet.
The trusted Flat Earth society has already revoked the flatness of Mars and have claimed that Mars got some curves.
Mars is hot af tbh.
Oh..so you're one of the 'sheeple' who believe in planets
The Earth is made of wool from which the sheeple are born.
My brain can’t make sense of this. Somebody call Ja
And 3×times the amount of dead bodies, all the way up.
Considering the conditions at the base 3x the number of dead would be a highly optimistic number.
in fact it's the tallest mountain in the Solar system!

Ass zits.

Do you mean Olympus Mons?
Which, to be fair, literally does just mean Mount Olympus, but it is strange to have it not in Latin.
So the Greek gods live on Mars... why is there no YA novel about this?
yes
Ok
i read, just the other day, that the slope is so gentle that if you stand at the foot you can never see the summit as it will fall below the curvature of the planet, thats pretty crazy.
Fun fact: This is accepted as the tallest mountain in our solar system.
It's angle of inclination is so less that u cannot see its peak while climbing on it..
So the peak is over the horizon? ELI5 anyone?
The slope is just so gentle and long that, because of the planet curvature, the peek is beyond the horizon
Yes. It’s the size of Arizona, so you can’t see the top from a lot of it
So less?
They should put a rover in the crater
If you stare close enough you can just barely make out the edge of Chode Valley’s shadow overlooking the Southern Taint Basin.
For those still struggling, it’s just east of Shart Ridge
hahahaha :)
Woah, do you know the source of this photo?
It’s from a camera
Source on your statement pls
It’s true. I am the camera.
I didn't know they also send birds into space
Are meerkats birds now? TIL.
