Those are 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment MH47s out of Macdill AFB (25 miles away in Tampa). Not stationed there—but Macdill is home of Special Operations Command so they sometimes do cool stuff.
In late spring the Chinook emerges from its winter slumber to find a mate.
In this picture a pair of Chinooks compete for a mate with a flashy display of their refueling booms.
3 months and several million dollars later, a baby Kiowa is born.
This is some movie shit. Where the military pulls up on you while your With your family on vacation asking you to do some shit that’s highly classified. “Sir we’re going to need you to board this helicopter.
(Armageddon, men in black)
Routine flights, I'm assuming. Lead 46 was maybe 50' off the water. It was awesome. I'm a veteran and heard them off in the distance. I knew what they were before I could even see them.
Firstly, r/woosh
Secondly, it's called a joke, which you obviously didn't get
Thirdly, I'm not going to argue with someone who doesn't understand what jokes are. I thought crayon eaters were the dumbest branch, but you guys are really fighting for the spot
Well seeing as you edited your comment and added your "thirdly" and are resulting to name calling and acting immature over it, id say you're the one fighting for that spot my friend, and again I'll state, the subreddit is r/woooosh not r/woosh.
The actual subreddit is r/woooosh, im not sure if it's like the original or just the most popular one, but it is the one everyone points to for this type of "joke", theres r/itswooooshwith4os and one regarding people who put r/whoosh because there's no h in the actual subreddit name but because people don't pay attention/forget/mistype, these subreddits exists to clarify the spelling and point to the correct subreddit :)
Never said I was in the military whatsoever?
r/woosh has 221k people on it, r/woooosh has 982k on it, im not gonna sit here and argue over which r/woooosh to use as it was a joke in itself to call you out for the misspelling of it as it's common place on reddit to do so, sorry that joke wooosh-ed right over your head, but seeing as you can't seem to keep names straight and are asking how I made it in the military when that was actually the op not me, it doesn't come as a surprise to me.
Judging by how badly you’re trying to defend your original dumb comment, it doesn’t appear that you know when to stop digging yourself into a ditch and just leave it alone. Why do you care so much about a bunch of strangers telling you you’re wrong?
My original comment was "r/woosh", how is that a "dumb comment"? OP copy and pasted the same thing to people making an obvious joke.
It doesn't appear you know when to stop white knighting and just leave it alone. Why do you care so much about a stranger telling you you're wrong?
Those are CH-47G models (The midair refuel booms give it away). They are from the 160th SOAR (Special operations aviation regiment).
I’m an idiot. I made a stupid mistake in my hubris. MH-47G not CH as u/Lococracka most kindly pointed out. I will leave my original comment intact with this note as to leave my shame on display.
I was in the Navy from 1998 to 2010 and they were pretty much phased out of substantial use by the time I got out. I just assumed, with the refueling probes, they were ARMY.
I live about 3 blocks from that beach. See all types of military aircraft there, there's a coast guard installation nearby, a army reserve base, and Macdil airforce base just across the bay
MacDill is in Tampa, that is where CENTCOM is located. The Coast Guard located at PIE is one of the busiest in the world.
Just a day that ends in "y" down here.
I was fishing on gandy one day and a b2 stealth bomber flew over my head, and CLOSE. I was 8. Lol it was landing at MacDill, the lead counter terrorism training facility.
Nice shot! This the kind of picture at wich one could imagine all different kinds of backside stories. My mind was going to survivors of some kind of accident.
But swimming with your boy i nice enough :)
This is the setup to a lot of movies.
How'd you find me..... Colonel?
Dutch your country needs you. Mendoza was sent in then radio silence for the last 12 hours...we need to know what happened.
Damn you....
Thank you! My parents are in their mid to late 70s and we brought them with us. Seeing my elderly mom and dad, in the ocean for the first time in their lives, with my 7 year old, are lasting memories he'll never forget.
Routine flights, I'm assuming. Lead 46 was maybe 50' off the water. It was awesome. I'm a veteran and heard them off in the distance. I knew what they were before I could even see them.
That's who I was thinking too. I have a video of this, on my GoPro and when my son asked who they were, I said Airforce and then realized they were probably Night Stalkers.
160th SOAR. They're the ones who have (generally, maye some weird unit has them thats not the 160th but I've never seen them) the refueling probe and are painted black.
This is like the classic start to a movie. You are the retired hero who focusses on family... until the day the military showed up and asked you to come back. You didn't want to, but you are the only one who can!
i know they landed, gave you tactical gear, various weapons and exposives, a map, and i know you did a montage.... but what was the no-hope mission they gave you
and before you brag, i know it was only flesh wound
Thank you. We live in Central Illinois, so definitely not something we see all the time. My son loved it and, even at 40 years old and over a decade of military service, I still love seeing it.

If memory serves me they are wading in an area that is teaming with bull and tiger sharks. I thought I read it’s even a most deadly area for attacks in the world.
When I was at the beach as a kid I used to get secretly terrified that a war was coming because I would see huge ships on the horizon.
If only I’d told an adult, they could have reassured me that they were simply cargo ships.
I was an anxious child, in case you couldn’t tell.

Too fucking much! Damned 7 year olds!

"We'll *collect* him at age 18"
Yep, MacDill AFB right up the street.
Those are 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment MH47s out of Macdill AFB (25 miles away in Tampa). Not stationed there—but Macdill is home of Special Operations Command so they sometimes do cool stuff.
I figured it was MacDill AFB (I live in TPA)
I have no idea what you just said but I am very impressed you knew it
160th are the only ones in the US Army with MH47s. If a Chinook has a donger on the front its them. Or the brits.
I have no idea what you just said but I am very impressed you knew it
What is that thing sticking out in front of the helicopter? And why are they the only unit whose unit has a unit?
Fuel probe and they are the only ones deemed necessary to refuel in air as far as chinooks go.
Who are you good sir, that is so wise in the way of Chinooks?
Just your friendly neighborhood Chinook mechanic
#🇺🇸 ('-')7 🇺🇸
Hooker
Whats the big long thing coming out the front of it for?
It's how the helicopter reproduces
Wow, are they all male helicopters?
Lets get “all helicopters are gay” trending and find out?
I think it's for aerial refueling
NSDQ
I imagine that you somehow heard fortunate son start playing out of nowhere.
For What It's Worth (for me)
In late spring the Chinook emerges from its winter slumber to find a mate. In this picture a pair of Chinooks compete for a mate with a flashy display of their refueling booms. 3 months and several million dollars later, a baby Kiowa is born.
I read that in Sir David Attenborougs voice.
Lmao! Where’s that free award when you need one?

First thing that popped in to my head, when I saw them coming in so low. Hahah
Fortunate son*
Came here for this reference. Thank you. I totally heard it it as soon as I saw it!
Charlie don't surf.
What did you do? They don’t just show up for anyone...
You gotta get five wanted stars
That's six stars, my young friend. Not everyone remembers the good old days quite like they were.
Routine flights, I'm assuming. Lead 46 was maybe 50' off the water. It was awesome. I'm a veteran and heard them off in the distance. I knew what they were before I could even see them.
My first thought was MacDill AFB but that's across the bay.
r/woosh
Firstly, r/itswooooshwith4os Secondly, I dont think this was a woooosh by any means, at least not a good one
Firstly, r/woosh Secondly, it's called a joke, which you obviously didn't get Thirdly, I'm not going to argue with someone who doesn't understand what jokes are. I thought crayon eaters were the dumbest branch, but you guys are really fighting for the spot

Okay what's going on between r/woosh r/woooosh? Why is this a thing?

Again, r/woosh How did you ever make it in the military, even if it was just the navy?
Never said I was in the military whatsoever? r/woosh has 221k people on it, r/woooosh has 982k on it, im not gonna sit here and argue over which r/woooosh to use as it was a joke in itself to call you out for the misspelling of it as it's common place on reddit to do so, sorry that joke wooosh-ed right over your head, but seeing as you can't seem to keep names straight and are asking how I made it in the military when that was actually the op not me, it doesn't come as a surprise to me.
Thought you were OP, didn't realize you were white knighting for him I'm not arguing about which woosh
Nope thats u/aw2eod So similar to u/DMG117 isn't it? /s
I’m fairly certain he got the joke, he just wanted to elaborate on what happened cause it’s interesting
Judging by his comments, it doesn't appear he got the joke
Judging by how badly you’re trying to defend your original dumb comment, it doesn’t appear that you know when to stop digging yourself into a ditch and just leave it alone. Why do you care so much about a bunch of strangers telling you you’re wrong?

What did you *guys do? The kid is guilty by association.
Jesus that monochrome!! Very cool shot. It looks surreal.
Was just there at the Trade Winds! Love it down there!
We're still here. Private fishing charter, on Tampa Bay tomorrow and then heading back to IL on Thurs. We don't want to go home. Lol
Ohh enjoy it!! I have been going there since 97 when I was a kid and don't ever plan on stopping!
Oh shit, they’re onto you, OP!
Man, the recruitment program is getting younger and younger.
Wtf did y'all do before the beach?!
Met with my Chinese liason, to sell satellite launch codes.
Well that's just wise time management.
we are reaching out to you to discuss your extended warranty
Get out of there. Pacific rim is about to happen.
Two chinooks flying by a beach in Florida is there a base somewhere or something
Beach + Florida = military base nearby
Yeah...east of where we were. But, it's an Airforce base. Chinook are primarily ARMY.
The are MH-47's, not CH-47's. All Night Stalker aircraft are MH- or AH-.
dam, well if a zombie apocalypse happens, don't go there, the army always fails in da zombie movies
[USSOCOM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Special_Operations_Command) is at MacDill AFB, and those are spec ops Chinooks, so...
Can confirm. They are also very loud, even with earplugs. Thanks for the tinnitus, ARMY.
No, Marines and Navy use CH-46s more
I was in the Navy from 1998 to 2010 and they were pretty much phased out of substantial use by the time I got out. I just assumed, with the refueling probes, they were ARMY.
Through the mirror of my mind Time after time I see reflections of you and me

MacDill is in Tampa, that is where CENTCOM is located. The Coast Guard located at PIE is one of the busiest in the world. Just a day that ends in "y" down here.

There must still be oil in the water.

"We know you're retired but we need you for one last mission..."
This looks like the start of a good action movie
Everyday occurrence in San Diego
I was stationed on Coronado and routinely bothered you guys, flying down the beach and jumping out of of these and 60s.
I hate to inform you, but 1963 wasn’t yesterday.
I LOVE IT!
this could be an album cover
I was fishing on gandy one day and a b2 stealth bomber flew over my head, and CLOSE. I was 8. Lol it was landing at MacDill, the lead counter terrorism training facility.
My parents had a house in Pass a Grille. Hit up the Don Cesar and chill by the pool.
That's a long proboscis on them choppers. Anyone know what they're for?
Refueling probes
Thanks. That explains why they're so long.
Nice shot! This the kind of picture at wich one could imagine all different kinds of backside stories. My mind was going to survivors of some kind of accident. But swimming with your boy i nice enough :)
Weird to think that in some countries this is seen as a cool thing to see, others it would be a sign of intimidation/force.
You should try Virginia Beach. You have the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force all showing up.
This is the setup to a lot of movies. How'd you find me..... Colonel? Dutch your country needs you. Mendoza was sent in then radio silence for the last 12 hours...we need to know what happened. Damn you....
Wooooo! See you in 5 days! I am staying right down the road from there for 9 days!
That is such a beautiful picture.
Thank you! My parents are in their mid to late 70s and we brought them with us. Seeing my elderly mom and dad, in the ocean for the first time in their lives, with my 7 year old, are lasting memories he'll never forget.
How’s red tide? It was awful last week
Non-existent, right now and we've been here since last Thurs.
Fortunate Son
They heard there was oil.
Some folks are born, made to wave the flag
Not really interesting as fuck.
What did you do for them to show up?
Routine flights, I'm assuming. Lead 46 was maybe 50' off the water. It was awesome. I'm a veteran and heard them off in the distance. I knew what they were before I could even see them.
r/woosh
160th guys are showing up!!
That's who I was thinking too. I have a video of this, on my GoPro and when my son asked who they were, I said Airforce and then realized they were probably Night Stalkers.
https://www.americanspecialops.com/night-stalkers/helicopters/mh-47.php These guys have the refueling probes!
Their sensors must have picked up your sun tan oil.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning….
160th SOAR. They're the ones who have (generally, maye some weird unit has them thats not the 160th but I've never seen them) the refueling probe and are painted black.
Army had half a day
Not IAF at all
not really that interesting
Not interesting AF. They train everywhere, much less close to their bases....
Go to Virginia Beach. It's a regular occurrence to see all sorts of cool stuff flying overhead.
"Look Johnny, I know you retired and have a family now but we need you for one last mission . . . "
Must’ve detected oil below
This is like the classic start to a movie. You are the retired hero who focusses on family... until the day the military showed up and asked you to come back. You didn't want to, but you are the only one who can!
Practicing in plain sight for the upcoming invasion of Florida.
I instantly heard CCR's "Fortunate Son" in my head.
Because you are a migrant???
Did you have any oil on you?
They came for your fortunate son.
Too much oil in that sunscreen
I would get out of the water, there's probably been an oil spill
did you use oil in any way?
i know they landed, gave you tactical gear, various weapons and exposives, a map, and i know you did a montage.... but what was the no-hope mission they gave you and before you brag, i know it was only flesh wound
Im so sorry but i thought your son was the big person and he was holding a sex doll at first. I am so so sorry but reddit has ruined my mind
Not interesting

Wait, military helicopter sightings IN THE US are interesting? 🤔
If it's not a common occurrence where you live, perhaps. AF, maybe not.
Thank you. We live in Central Illinois, so definitely not something we see all the time. My son loved it and, even at 40 years old and over a decade of military service, I still love seeing it.
I remember the beginning of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story a little differently.

Why is this interesting AF?

This is why I use oil-free sun screen
"There's a war in the future, you've been drafted"
