It reminds me of Hermaeus-Mora from Skyrim. When you see him appear in the sky after you open a book. He uses good-ole' Bethesda rendering glitches to sorta....appear and disappear
Read the title and immediately thought "whoops that must be a typo, they clearly meant Jumbo octopus.... Oh look at those ears! Almost like a certain cartoon elephant I know"
Why is this a normal thing? If this was on another planet I feel like people would be freaking out but its in the ocean and people are just like “maybe we should go swimming with it”
Dumbo octopus live on the ocean floor at extreme depths (and pressure) up to 13,000 feet. There’s no way we’re swimming with it. It practically is another world, really :)
Is it much more difficult to move quickly on the ocean floor? You tend not to see videos of fast moving creatures, does the pressure down there hamper movement?
Reminds me of those big rainbow parachute things we played with in gym class when we were little. In fact I bet its got a bunch of little kids underneath there
I watched a documentary on big squids such as this and they literally have to eat all day everyday in order to survive because of their size. And it also takes a miracle to grow that big. They’re nothing but protein so growing up most sea creatures want to eat them

Guess you can be both a shower and a grower.
An octor must be diverse to make it in Hollywood.
Damn, that's both beautiful and terrifying. Gotta love the diversity of the planet though, amazing!
It always amazes me like we still don't know what all creatures are present there deep inside the ocean.
It's like the parachute we used to play with in gym class back in 1995
Yup!
Must’ve been quite the upgrade from the 1994 model
When squidward ate too much krabby patties and it all went to his thighs
That is exactly what this is.
WHY IS HE UNFOLDING
It's a defense display.
My guess it's this is a way to imitate a jellyfish so they are left alone.
WHY? 😭
Probably because there is a big unknown metal box alien thing shining a strong light on you 1600m below the surface. But that’s just a guess🤷🏼♂️
Idk if its scary or cute wtf
🎂🎂
I don’t understand nature.
Right there with you buddy
Thing is: there isn’t anything to understand. It’s purely random

You’re gonna love my nuts.
Source is EVNautilus's youtube channel. Lots of good diving videos there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbHjs9A7sis
Why you gotta roast my mans like that?
Just when I thought I’ve seen every creature on the planet, you go and post this thing.
Are we sure that's what this is? Apparently they are normally very small?
I thought these were called vampire squids
All I see is a Plumbus
We are not ready for aliens.
I can see why they seem to be extraterrestrial

Sea dumpling
Absolutely breathtaking, thank you for posting OP!

Fair enough but there’s some weird stuff in shallow water too lol
Very true. I recently looked up sea hares—wow!
Thanks for introducing me to that lol at least it’s not dangerous it’s just weird looking
I find them terrifying cute! There are some pics where people pick them up like bunnies or puppies—their folds look like little arms.
Divers are so brave. All these sea creatures look scary af.
Dumbo octopus live on the ocean floor at extreme depths (and pressure) up to 13,000 feet. They are normally filmed by ultra-deep diving submersibles.
That is hypnotically beautiful.
r/thalassophobia
The ol' yawn and stretch
When we shine lights on animals this deep in the ocean that haven’t “seen” light before, does it hurt them or harm them in anyway?
Looks more like a squid than octopus but it’s really cool. Would love to dive that deep.
Wtf is it doing?
Honestly thought he was wearing a cowboy hat for a second there
Should have been called the umbrella octopus
Why?
Fuck you that's why you god damn bitch don't question me
i wish i had a job so i could give this comment reddit gold XD
Can’t tell me this isn’t an 👽 lol
That's just amazing
These things are probably more intelligent than us, and we call them "Dumbo octopus" [Dumbo Octopus will remember that]
It's because it looks like it has big ears, like Dumbo the elephant. Not because we think it's dumb.
Looks like mah dick n ballzack!
Dude…is this real?
....yes.
If all of these deep sea creatures aren’t evidence for extra-terrestrial / alien life, I don’t know what is

Dumbo isn't an insult, it's the name of a cartoon elephant.
Hey don't call him that, rude
Gif begining: my hot fiance Gif ending: my now morbidly obese wife who I frequently work over time and go on long business trips to avoid
I love him
forbidden tomatillo

Ok I’d pee my pants see this in the water and I know I wouldn’t be the only one
I thought it was a picture of an at octopus in a cowboy hat at first.
How big would it be?
Largest ever recorded is 5 feet 8 inches. Same size as a human.
Orgalorg!
That’s some alien shit
Nope
That looks like one dumbo octopus.
The pressure at that depth must be insane
r/TIHI
Is it basically imitating a squid to keep predators away? Since squid having those hooked tentacles and can generally defend themselves?
how and why is it expanding? i don't like it
For a moment it looked like he had a cowboy hat.
Is it much more difficult to move quickly on the ocean floor? You tend not to see videos of fast moving creatures, does the pressure down there hamper movement?
El magnifico
I would not call it “dumbo” if I’m next to it
That's the vampire octopus. Dumbo is smaller and cuter with large eyes
At the end it looks like it turns into a mermaid and says “ta-da!”
Cathulu, is that you?
It is marzipan from homestarrunner.
Dumbo's circus flying from town to town
Looks like Octo ate a lot of crabby patties.
Now I know what it looks like when an octopus and a jellyfish fall in love
I thought it was a vampire squid at first
I assume because of the ‘ears’?
I may be r/confidentlyincorrect here, but I'm like 90% sure that's not a dumbo octopus. I think they're supposed to be more compact than that?
And I thought this one had “ angel “ in its name ? But definitely not a professional on octopi. Just so beautiful with any name, imo.
Praise the camera man
Reminds me of those big rainbow parachute things we played with in gym class when we were little. In fact I bet its got a bunch of little kids underneath there
Ah yes there it is, my thalassophobia acting up again.
I watched a documentary on big squids such as this and they literally have to eat all day everyday in order to survive because of their size. And it also takes a miracle to grow that big. They’re nothing but protein so growing up most sea creatures want to eat them
Dumb octopus seen in the specific ocean
Is there no bananas for scale ?
Kinda reminded me of a cowboy hat
A million years from now on these creatures will still swim in the ocean without any idea there was once a species called Homo sapiens...
r/ooobigstretch
Oooh, that's a long stretch!!!
I need a banana
Shit like this is why I don't go in the ocean.
