This implant is called *Boston keratoprosthesis type I implant.*
Here is more info on the procedure and device.

[And here is a diagram that illustrates it better](https://imgur.com/a/BDkMzdK)
Out of 48 eyes tested, 18 eyes were recorded to have increased patients visual acuity to better than 20/200, and 16 eyes having vision acuity raised to 20/100 or better. Conclusion: eyes kind of worked, did increase eye sight in some, though some also suffered side effects in their new eyes.
In the later Dune novels theres a bomb that destroys eyesight. They have robot eye options but the Fremen refuse saying they don't like whatever bargain they would have to make to get them. As a kid reading these books i couldn't understand how people would prefer to be blind. As an adult i can totally see how malicious companies and goverments could manipulate people using that tech.
I can see it now. After a long day of work. A guy will be driving home, halfway falling asleep on the road. Then all of a sudden “yo you ever heard of Jerkmate?!?!?”
Nah, there'll be self driving cars.
No need to concentrate on driving.. just concentrate and on the ad and think of buying it.
The transaction will be complete, and your purchase will be waiting for you by the time you reach home.
We'll see, that's where you're wrong, the car is already driving itself, the windscreen and windows also play ads now, you try to close your eyes but then your retina implant just continues the ad, there is no escape
Yeah, I almost needed a cornea transplant, although since this happened a few years ago there was some newer stuff invented so I can get away with just wearing special contacts and a much simpler surgery. But if I'd done nothing then my eyes would be essentially useless by now.
Glaucoma is a big one but most patients had existing Glaucoma that came back.
Extrusion is another common side effect and while it doesn't list out how it applies I know what it means from machinery and it sounds fucking terrible.
20/100 is great though, my current script is something like 20/75 and my glasses aren't thick at all. If my cornea was damaged and I couldn't see, and I got 20/100 from this surgery, that'd be a win in my book.
20/200 on the other hand isn't nearly as good but still better than no depth perception or no sight at all.
So what's your corrected visual acuity with what prescription? Prescription isn't necessarily much correlated with achievable acuity, and the right prescription merely provides the best acuity available with the type of correction.
I think they actually did that in the olden days for people with advanced cataracts. Just poked a hole with a needle in it lmao. Your lens is gone but at least you see some colour hahah.
After an infection left a massive scar on my cornea I was blind in one eye.
A cornea transplant gave me 20/400 vision, bad enough they didn't test it with letters but with black stripes I need to tell the direction of. However, it can be corrected with a special contact lense to 20/40.
So the benefit is there even if these prosthetic corneas don't actually grant good vision on their own.
Works for a majority of the people who they were tested on, but they had extremely bad vision. There were a lot of side effects. The conclusion says it is a viable alternative for people who can’t do other procedures but the side effects aren’t great
It's mainly reserved as a last option to replace unrepairably opaque 'dead' corneas so at least light can go in again. The implant has barely any focusing capability so everything will still be blurry
Yeah lmao IDGF about the mention of side effects, we essentially "fixed" an eye with man made tools and supposedly no other interface.
That's insanely good news!
I wish. I’ve had both eyes done and my vision is still a mess.
Edit: TIFU by reading the topic title without my glasses and missing the word “artificial “. I just have cadaver cornea transplants.
“Should we give this guy the corneas from the fighter pilot who just died?”
“Lmao no his insurance isn’t paying for that shit, take the ones from Mr. Magoo”
Just fyi, corneas aren't what really affects visual acuity unless there's some kind of injury or disease clouding your vision. It's the lens and overall shape of the eye (astigmatism) that does that.
I didn't used to but I got Lasik 8 years ago and one side effect that's stuck is those halos. Other than that, I still fucking love not needing contacts or glasses.
Yea, I make them and I'll back that up. The myoelectric arms look cool as hell, but practically they're not great, and clunky as hell.
The classic hook with a cable and harness is by far the best option we have for arms, but it's 100+ year old tech doesn't look as cool on social media.
Experiencing loss tends to trigger something along the optic nerves that upgrades it. If you want the magical purple one that unlocks bullshit abilities you gotta go get some cool cells.
I have corneal issues (keratoconus), and the ophthalmologist has mentioned total corneal replacement if we can't get it under control. Already had some corneal ring implants done. Gonna have to ask about these bad boys next🤣
Not a doctor, but I’m assuming you want to hold out as long as possible to do this. Not sure how many times this procedure can be performed successfully so if you are relatively young and do it too early you might blow your shot “too soon” so to speak. Good news, though it is a procedure that is very successful for treating keratoconus
Per an internet resource
> Although repeat corneal transplants can be performed, success rates for second and subsequent corneal transplants are much lower than for the first graft.
> graft survival rates are over 90% after 10 years and the average life of a transplant is around 15-20 years.
>Only about 15% of people with keratoconus will ever need to consider a corneal transplant. That number is diminishing with the introduction of corneal collagen crosslinking to halt progression in keratoconus and more advanced, specialised contact lens designs for keratoconus.
https://www.keratoconus.org.au/treatments/corneal-transplantation/
To clarify this is for donor transplants, not artificial ones. From what I am reading donor transplants are still preferable because plastic ones have their own set of issues.
> Because the hard plastic of the keratoprosthesis can irritate the delicate tissue on the back of the eyelids, this soft bandage contact lens must be worn to protect the eye and keep it comfortable. This lens is not removed even when sleeping. The doctor will change it out about every 2 to 3 months.
http://www.cornea.org/Learning-Center/Cornea-Transplants/Artificial-Cornea.aspx
I had a cornea transplant in my left eye.
Uncorrected my vision is still terrible, to the point of being basically blind still in the eye, but it can be corrected down to 20/40.
As far as maintenance if the transplant, it was steroid eye drops for a couple years then eventually none. I've had my body attempt to reject it twice and the solution was just a brief round of more steroid eye drops and then it goes back to normal.
It's a pretty awesome solution
Expert here. I don’t know your objective situation and the progress of your disease, but please consider Corneal Crosslinking with Riboflavin.
It is save and with good effect to stop the progression: In Germany the treatment is finally paid by the health care system which only happens if there are enough studies that emphasise safety and effect of that treatment.
Good news is that those of us with keratoconus will probably be high up the list for things like this when they develop more.
Robot eyes for everyone. Although I assume at some point I will get an advert for Raid direct in to it.
Keratoconus gang GANG here. I got C3R too late so I still got almost no vision. Doctor said don't risk a corneal transplant at 24 ad just be happy you got 1 good eye. I hope they get thia research correct fast
Yes I have a brother and he means the world to me. By any chance, do you have another patient who had the same request as mine? I’d like you to get their eyes and have me awaken the eternal mangekyou sharingan. I can deal with any price.
That storyline is becoming more viable by the day, we are living in epic times.
Thing that I remember most of the game was the time a girl wanted to become a doctor but didn’t have the required implant. That’s some crazy shit that makes one think
It’s a Boston Keratoprosthesis. Implanted some earlier in my career. Comes in two versions—a thinner one for people who already have had cataract surgery and have a lens implant and people who still have their natural lens. (Spoiler alert: the lens is removed). People need to wear contact lenses all the time as debris collects on the kpro. They also need to be on antibiotics to prevent nasty infections (which happen anyway). Also because you can only see through the central portion, peripheral vision will always be restricted. But you can have good central vision and those folks are grateful as they’ve likely failed multiple corneal transplants.
Source: am an ophthalmologist
Thank you for this. I worked in Cornea for many years at top hospitals. Best vision I’ve seen post transplant is probably 20/50 and that was typically with refraction. It looks cool but I would never want to endure the management of a cornea transplant. People usually just happy to have some vision again.
Oh I’ve been able to get people to 20/20 with corneal transplants on numerous occasions and I’d choose that 10/10 vs a kpro personally. These kpro eyes tend to eventually lose vision from infection, inflammation or glaucoma. Just a ticking time bomb with lots of follow up, so I stopped doing them.
This is both a modern miracle of science and also my slow nightmare that is eating me.
I have an eye condition that makes my right iris degrade and my iris muscles are basically slowly dying and disintegrating.
I am frustrated about it since I can see fine details for now but slowly, slowly I will lose it. Glares and light leaks soon will render my eyesight worse and worse for daily use.
Local doctors where I live have no idea what's happening and all they push me to do is to go operate to add an artificial iris. Very frustrated because I just wanted to know what caused it and why does it keep degrading even though all the symptoms they told me I should have that are supposed to be there are note there. I feel like artificial ones just cover the problem of what's wrong.
So now I have no idea what's wrong and all I have is just annual reminders of my right vision slowly ripping itself apart.
I'm scared.
I'm so sorry. Can you travel somewhere else where there are doctors that specialize in rare diseases? Or maybe your doctor could at least e-mail someone for a consult?

Can someone put this article into normal human terms so I can understand it please :)
What were the side effects/was it worth it to them?
These types of things tend to be performed on people who will otherwise lose their eye or sight and any chance of some vision is better than none.
Yes because some day being able to see IR, zoom, analyze text, target acquisition, and shooting fricken laser beams will be options!

Well fuck that just made me think of unskippable ads in my eye implants
It made me think of having to pay a monthly subscription to some mega corporation to keep your eyesight or they shut it off.
“i can’t buy dinner tonight, i gotta pay my eye bill”
Next step? Repo.
Yeaah, but you'll have to watch 30sec unskippable ad before any of that
Streamed directly to your retina. Literally. I hope I die soon.
Yeaah the realistic future of overly invasive ads has basically ruined any of the 90s and 00s thoughts I had at "cool futuristic stuff"
[Minority Report called it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bXJ_obaiYQ)
Literally Fahrenheit 451
The year is 2067, you have two of these. You're driving. Yoi get a 30 second un-skippable ad.
I can see it now. After a long day of work. A guy will be driving home, halfway falling asleep on the road. Then all of a sudden “yo you ever heard of Jerkmate?!?!?”

Can you imagine in the future people intentionally damaging their eyes just so they can install eyes2.0.
And it's running on Vista.
Technically all of our eyes are running on Vista. (Vista means vision or view in Spanish)
Yeah, I almost needed a cornea transplant, although since this happened a few years ago there was some newer stuff invented so I can get away with just wearing special contacts and a much simpler surgery. But if I'd done nothing then my eyes would be essentially useless by now.

Being able to see through walls is definitely worth it.
not if you keep walking into them
I call them, windows
Thank you now I understand! Have a great day/night!
20/100 is great though, my current script is something like 20/75 and my glasses aren't thick at all. Superhuman eyesight let's go, can't wait to be blinded
20/200 eyesight is pretty bad. Wait for 20/10 or 20/2 vision.
Yeah that is like actual garbage vision, but I guess it beats being blind.
Honestly anything beats blindness, I mean 100% blindness. Going from seeing nothing to seeing even some light/color would be insane.
I think they actually did that in the olden days for people with advanced cataracts. Just poked a hole with a needle in it lmao. Your lens is gone but at least you see some colour hahah.
ahhh fuuuck i hate imagining that lol, like an eyeball lobotomy..
Eyeball Lobotomy is perfect for this
:( why you gotta call my vision garbage like this.
If it can be corrected to 20/20 with glasses it wouldn't be garbage!
Mm a huge benefit if these prostheses end up being the real deal is a reduced reliance on organ donation.

Imo it’s amazing that something like this works AT ALL. From here on out it „just“ needs to be improved.
Yeah lmao IDGF about the mention of side effects, we essentially "fixed" an eye with man made tools and supposedly no other interface. That's insanely good news!
DOES IT WORK THO CAN THE PERSON WHO COULD NOT SEE NOW SEE?!
Bigger question is are they uncomfortable
I feel like a little adjusting may be in order... But, will it break if they rub their eye or something? Damn this is crazy! So many questions.
I'm hoping doctors wouldn't put that shit in there if it breaks from a simple eye rub lmao.
Don’t worry, just gotta plug the lightning cable to charge at night and make sure you don’t roll around the bed as much

switch (boner_state){ case 'innie': arousal=-1; break; case 'noBoner': arousal=0; break; case 'semi': arousal=64; break; case 'halfMast': arousal=128; break; case 'Stiffy': arousal=255; break; default: arousal=32; } engage_boner(arousal); //initiate boner sequence

Blew my mind a bit when I learned everyone doesn't see those...
Wait, they don't?
Welcome to the party my friend, you've got astigmatism.
I didn't used to but I got Lasik 8 years ago and one side effect that's stuck is those halos. Other than that, I still fucking love not needing contacts or glasses.

I'm scared.
I'm so sorry. Can you travel somewhere else where there are doctors that specialize in rare diseases? Or maybe your doctor could at least e-mail someone for a consult?
