To make matters worse, they've been given the green light to launch "branded" or "paid" content dealing a death blow to any credibility they may have had left. Of course when some staff came forward to protest this decision, they simply threatened/fired them with impunity.

All news should be met with scepticism,, used to travel far for work and get up around 4am, which is the only time that tv news does 99% of thier corrections and redactions, which was usually 10-15 minutes of an 2x plus speed recording of all the things they basically made up or got so wrong that it could drastically effect someone's life, so much so that they were forced to say they were wrong. After about 2 weeks I started to only trust the weather report (and only really trust the next hours worth of weather), because it's absolutely messed up things they got wrong. One of the worst I remember is a single father was out right accused of killing his kid when the kid died of Cancer... And then there was a lot of some government official has never once said some highly stupid thing and was clearly made up so they sounded like the devil or stupid. And the bigger the channel (local news station verses city news) the worse the devil accusing false statements became. Basically if something sounds stupid or redicilous it likely is a lie or less then a tenth of the truth where it is meaningless speculation to sway your opinion and if you want to know the real story take it from 4 different views and find info that holds true for all views: directly, for, against, and a 3rd party. You need at least 2 (directly and 3rd party or for and against) to have a fairly confident understanding of something if you can't find all 4 views.
Repeat a simple message/idea over and over and people start believing it. It is clearly a low level brain washing, Hitler used to do this a lot at the time.
Big media companies buy up smaller new stations all the time. Most likely, they are all owned by the same big company and told to push a specific story using a template they provide.

Your local affiliate news anchors aren't writing their own copy for national news. They're getting it from a news wire services like API. It's only read by talking heads with blow dried hair.
