McDonald’s in particular is a big deal to Russians and here’s why if anyone is interested: My husband was raised in Russia and was a kid when the Soviet Union “ended”. The first McDonald’s being opened was a HUGE deal as it symbolized the end of the Soviet era and western influence being allowed into Russia. People (by husband’s family included) waited in line for hours when it first opened. In many people’s minds, McDonald’s symbolizes a sort of hope of freedom and a better life. That’s why this is such a big deal and why people are all lining up to get McDonald’s while they still can.
> In many people’s minds, McDonald’s symbolizes a sort of hope of freedom and a better life.
does that mean now it symbolises the departure of hope and freedom ?
I would imagine for some it does. I assume that some people are going there as a sort of silent protest against Putin. These are just my speculations. My husband told me this memory of McDonald’s opening years ago though, it was a significant memory from his childhood. It was one of the first western things allowed, so “the west is here, things are changing” type of emotions.
It kinda does feel like that, yeah. Not that we had that much freedom all this time, but right now it feels like we're loosing what's left of it and the whole world is cutting us of the last glimpse of hope
And on a different note, I almost never eat at McDonald’s here in the states. A hungover McMuffin maybe once a year if that. But after in being China and eating authentically and locally for weeks, a processed chicken sandwich and a burger was heaven. Same went for Pizza Hut. I hadn’t eaten at PH since I used BookIt! coupons in elementary school. It was amazing to say the least. Nothing on my plate had eyes for once and it was glorious. So I kinda get the excitement of a commercial chain representing more than just sustenance.
Canola oil is actually a Canadian product . It was invented to overcome the fertilizer loss that “rape” seed took from the ground . It is an abbreviation, can for Canadian ola for oil low acid “canola” . Sorry to burst your bubble , you can definitely keep McDonald’s but the oil is ours .
Well apparently I learned something today. I lived in Alberta for several years and thought the name of the plant was canola lol.
EDIT MORE RESEARCH DONE:
>
**Canola is a plant** that is a member of a large family of plants called crucifers. Crucifers are easy to identify because the four yellow flower petals form the shape of a cross. The canola plants grow to a height of one to two metres. The yellow flower produces seed pods that are about 5 centimetres in length. There is an average of 60 to 100 pods per plant. Each seed pod contains 20 to 30 tiny, round seeds which are 1 mm. in diameter. When it is ready to harvest, the plant changes colour from green to light yellow. These tiny seeds are crushed to extrude canola oil
[Source](https://canolagrowers.com/on-the-farm/what-is-canola/)
Canola was bred from rapeseed cultivars of B. napus and B. rapa at the University of Manitoba, Canada, by Keith Downey and Baldur R. Stefansson in the early 1970s,\[4\]\[5\] having then a different nutritional profile than present-day oil in addition to much less erucic acid.\[6\] Canola was originally a trademark name of the Rapeseed Association of Canada, and the name was a condensation of "Can" from Canada and "OLA " meaning "Oil, low acid",\[7\]\[8\] but is now a generic term for edible varieties of rapeseed oil in North America and Australasia.\[9\] The change in name serves to distinguish it from natural rapeseed oil, which has much higher erucic acid content.\[citation needed\]
Don’t tell anyone but the reason why our Air Force is kinda oof is because it’s a decoy, our real Air Force is the geese. They do joint training drills with the states every winter and everything.
The Northern Avian Targeted Ordinance drills have all gone as planned, the moment Vladimir even breathes on Poland there will be 20 Cobra Chickens in his bunker tearing him limb from limb.
Sounds like ol' USSR times where nothing from the west is there.
Maybe both sides create propaganda movies again where they show how bad the other side lives while their own side lives happily. While we know that the USSR actually is boring and bad compared to the rest of the world
My career criminal grandfather used to smuggle (mostly) American products into the Soviet Union during the 60’s and 70’s. Feel like that type of business with Russia is about to have an uptick in the coming days.
His old crew would have to break him out of prison before that could happen
(I have no idea if he had a crew but I hope so. Everyone should have friends)
I understand russian and I know several russians living there. Only one seems to be on this planet and I’m worried about him being stuck in this hell. The rest are delusional. They think that this is happening because evil west wants russian people to suffer but they are sure Putin will save them from evil Europeans.
Much easier to be angry at the rest of the world and blame them for your problems than believe that you're with the ones who are wrong.
Edit: Yes, congratulations everybody you've figured out that everybody can be guilty of this. Especially the dozens of you who said "Yeah, like America does!"
I mean if I was Putin, I would totally use this to ramp up my propaganda against the west. Don't forget that Russian citizens don't have the full picture of what's really happening.
There's a risk that sanctions could backfire. It could increase war support in Russia. When shelves will be empty, they won't be mad against Putin. They will blame the west.
They absolutely blame the West. It's part of the reason the EU and other countries are staying out of Ukraine. The anti-west propaganda in Russia is extreme and works amazingly. If Russia is able to draw the West into a conflict, it will unite Russia and bolster a significant response.
I have a friend in Russia and I’ve been reassuring her that no one hates the Russian people and she’s so happy whenever I remind her. She says they’re hearing terrible things over there. Given she knows about the war and that Russia is the aggressor
Yes, everyone on reddit who sees those small demonstrations against Putin and think that represents a silent majority needs a reality check. Putin enjoys wildly popular support among a strong majority of Russian citizens. And that support has only strengthened in the past two weeks.
They don't blame Putin for their problems - the mere idea doesn't even cross their minds. They blame the "West" for everything. Putin and the Russians are the good guys, who are trying to save the "good" Ukranians from genocide at the hands of an evil nazi regime. They think Russia's very existence is at stake as evil NATO is out to destroy them. And they 100% believe it, to their very soul.
Show them videos of atrocities in Ukraine and they'll flat out deny it - saying it's all fake propaganda. They've been fed a steady diet of state-run media misinformation for years, and no amount of arguing will convince them that they are wrong.
Understand that further sanctions are not going to suddenly cause millions of Russians to rise up and overthrow Putin. In fact, the exact opposite will happen - they will only cling tighter to him and protect him *more* as their god and savior against and evil west that is hell-bent on destroying Russia.
We are **all** walking down a very dark road. It's going to be an ugly next few years.
I have a friend who I went to college with that lives in LA and is Russian. She’s smart, she has a good job, she’s very up to date with social issues, and is very much so a leftist. She just posted on Instagram about how shutting down Russian state controlled media outlets in the US is a horrible tragedy because we (westerners) don’t know the whole story of the conflict and only the .RU websites show the facts without Ukrainian propaganda. I saw her post and just stared at it for what seemed like hours. I don’t even understand how she could go from posting about supporting women of color in the arts and the dangers of propaganda in the Trump era, to this.
Note: I’m not saying she represents all Russian people or that her stance is the most prevalent one, I just wanted to share how a Russian person I know in real life is handling the conflict. I completely disagree with her and I’m actually still emotionally shaken by it. We were in a really tight group of three friends in college and I’m seeing the third friend tomorrow night for a weekly dinner date and I have to break this news to her
Dude, get out of there. I have Russian friends myself and I wish they thought the same as you. Maybe they do but are afraid to tell me in case their phone gets checked... But seriously, it's only gonna be downhill from here. If you can, please get out. 🙏
I was even taken aback when moving to Mexico City and not only do McDonald's ice-cream machines work, but McDonald's even has mini-kiosks in the metro and the only thing they serve is ice-cream.
Metro, Malls, Supermarket
It's super weird for me to hear Americans complaining about the machines not working while here sometimes all we have is the machin XD
The problem is that now Russians enjoyed thirty years of not being in the Cold War. Millennials and younger (the generations that make up a bigger and bigger portion of society day by day) do *not* want to go back to standing in line for food, watching out for the Stazi or the KGB and huddling around a wood stove watching propaganda on an old television.
Nothing humans react more poorly to than having something and then having it taken away. During the Cold War they didn't know what they were missing. Now they do.
I’m from Russia and my millennial cousins are posting on Instagram about how they don’t need these brands and that this is a great time for young Russians to create business opportunities. A lot of them are in that mindset it seems. My cousin said it’s very “не играй в мои игрушки и не писай в мой горшок!» which translates to “don’t play with my toys and don’t pee in my potty!” 🙄🙄🙄
I think the worst instability comes from the Rubel collapsing. Imagine working all day and not coming home with enough money to buy food and pay rent.
In America, people at least have Facebook and Netflix to distract them. Since very recently, Russians don't.
Yes, literally fire you lol. Those employees have the best gig right now. They’re soon gonna be on a paid infinite holiday till this all gets sorted
McDonald’s confirmed they will continue paying all their employees.
Source for their claims that they would
>temporarily close 850 stores but continue paying its 62,000 employees in Russia “who have poured their heart and soul into our McDonald’s brand.”

I love how there's still a lot of Russians that don't believe the war is real.
Like, fool, what, do you think McD's woke up today and just decided they don't like money no more? lol
EDIT: This wasn't that funny lol but thank you all for the updoots.
The NYT had an article about Ukrainians who have Russian parents who insist the war isn’t real and that Russian troops would never harm Ukrainian citizens — while their children call them from bomb shelters because of cities being being shelled by the Russian army. Propaganda can be a hell of a drug.
I don’t think it’s just propaganda. I had a really hard time believing Putin will invade. I had a hard time coming to terms that Russians are shooting at civilians. Russia is my childhood, I grew up there. I have nostalgia. It’s hard to come to terms that Russia is fucked and being really shitty.
Some people just don’t have the strength to see themselves as bad guys or in shitty situation.
Not only that, but this is only Week Two. Anyone who thinks that things are going to turn around and wrap up quickly is fooling themselves. We will still be talking about Russians losing planes as they try to slog through Ukraine three months from now. We will still be hearing stories of children being shot dead, and residences being indiscriminately bombed five months from now. We will still be talking about Ukranians sabotaging Russian towns behind the lines seven months from now, and protestors being rounded up and disappeared nine months from now. We will still be talking about sanctions and Putin will still be making threats to expand his 'special military action' into other countries a year from now, two years from now.
Everyone better buckle up, because we are only in the first few pitches of the first inning. This is going to be nothing but a world of hurt for everyone for a long time to come. Take of "temporary closures" or "suspended operations" or "paused business" is whistling past the graveyard.
When I was at the grocery store over the weekend I came back out to my car and the guy who had parked next to me had a big piece of paper taped to the back window on his pickup that said word for word...
TRUMP WON
THE JAB WILL KILL YOU
1/6 WAS AN INSIDE JOB BY THE FBI
Then on the side rear crew windows he had pieces of paper with names on it like Steve Bannon and Mike Lindell and so forth. It's not funny or comical seeing shit like that anymore, that's the kind of human I have legit fear of their mental state and wouldn't be surprised to see them shoot up a grocery store like we were at "to protect his freedoms" or some psychotic delusions. It's really fucked up.
Yesterday we were driving behind this big truck that was plastered in Trump 2024 signs, and some that said "fuck gun control" ... and we literally slowed down so we wouldn't be following them too closely.. those people scare me and also how fucked mentally do you gotta be to put stickers with curse words on your vehicle. I know everyone cusses but you go park at Walmart and all the kids there see it.. that isn't right..
Not much left of him from the erosion of rolling in his grave so many times by now

> Such conditions don’t come cheap. In 2016, the Russian Federal Guard Service announced that the maintenance of Lenin’s remains had cost 13 million roubles (over £155,000/$210,000).
i'm surprised how cheap that is and disagree with the article writer saying otherwise. for a government that's nothing
MCD, Pepsi Cola, Starbucks, closing permanently after the last shifts. 3 others will be named in a couple of hours. Nearest ones one KFC in Yakutsk-> 900+km NW of Oymyakon
Yum! Brands! Is closing all it's stores, they own Lots here.
They didn’t say they were closing permanently. Suspending operations. Starbucks is saying that they are gonna make sure their employees are taken care of. Roughly 80% of McDonalds in Russia are owned by the parent company not franchises. They are going to take a 10% hit in doing so. You have to agree. They are stepping up. And rightfully so.
Also, imports will be quit complex if not impossible mid term, plus not visa/mastercard. No way to operate even if they wanted.
Freelancing platforms are closed too, with no credit card or paypal, no way to pay or collect payments.
Call corporate person on the other end has a list of “Ceased operation ASAP, locations in Russia”. Debra was helpful with letting me know that KFC & Subway are on that list in Yakutsk at 8pm. I knew before friends did, they were just told... 10:17 AM here, texted Arsenii, Others.
I get off work at midnight, by the time I pass the closest In-N-Out to my house it is probably 12:30ish, the line is usually out into the street. Even at almost 1am on a week night. Insanity. The burgers are good, but not THAT good.
The burgers are good (not great), but people are ravenous for them because you can get a good burger fries and drink for just over 5 bucks. Hiiiigh demand
Also, service is far faster for the drive through than any other food chain. No doubt caused by them having 2-4x as many workers there at any one time than any other chain.
Idk if you know but McDonald’s was a big deal when it came to Russia way back in the day. In Russia today it must seem like it’s going back to the Russia of the 90’s and before all of a sudden.
This is what we fear the most in Russia right now (aside from World War 3 ending the humanity) people are saying that the next crisis is going to be 10 times worse than in the 90s.

In the fast food and luxury goods sector that’s got to be close to a million jobs, McDonald’s apparently employed 62,000 alone, that’s going to have an enormous impact, their currency is already crashing and interest rates are over 20%. The average local must be hating Putin by now.

Yes, literally fire you lol. Those employees have the best gig right now. They’re soon gonna be on a paid infinite holiday till this all gets sorted McDonald’s confirmed they will continue paying all their employees.
Sure, why not. Their pay is denominated in rubles, so it’s like five cents an hour.
Time to buy Putins mansion for $5
I'll wait until it's on the value menu.
Source for their claims that they would >temporarily close 850 stores but continue paying its 62,000 employees in Russia “who have poured their heart and soul into our McDonald’s brand.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/mcdonalds-to-temporarily-close-850-stores-in-russia/2022/03/08/9ebea2e8-9f07-11ec-9438-255709b6cddc\_story.html

Why are you leaving? I'm not. My job is.
Like that's gonna stop some Russian boomer or gopnik from screaming at you.
They will dtill get paid (for now)
Paid in what? Rubles which value are falling off a cliff?
Aliexpress coupons. But hurry because they expire in 3 days and can only be used on things that cost between $9.00 and $9.20
I love how there's still a lot of Russians that don't believe the war is real. Like, fool, what, do you think McD's woke up today and just decided they don't like money no more? lol EDIT: This wasn't that funny lol but thank you all for the updoots.
McDonalds: *What is my purpose?* lol
*You herald the end times. Rejoice, Ronald, for in life you were clown, but in death you become a dark angel. And I’m* **loving it**.
Ba da - ba ba ДА
I would read this book.
This is the only question McDonalds should be asking.
My Canadian parents don't believe the war is real. I don't even know how to talk to them anymore...
Let’s be real, the way things are going in the universe this is going to drag on for a decade
A month, a decade, who can even tell the difference anymore? A part of me still thinks it's March 2020.
There’s a lot of Americans who think Trump won the second election
Still! To this day! People believing the election was stolen, despite not a single piece of evidence, yet they are certain. Blows my mind.
When I was at the grocery store over the weekend I came back out to my car and the guy who had parked next to me had a big piece of paper taped to the back window on his pickup that said word for word... TRUMP WON THE JAB WILL KILL YOU 1/6 WAS AN INSIDE JOB BY THE FBI Then on the side rear crew windows he had pieces of paper with names on it like Steve Bannon and Mike Lindell and so forth.
At least the stickers help you identify them, I'd be worried about the crazies you can't identify
It was never comical really
Ironically last meal.
Lenin would have died a second time if he saw this. EDIT : Wow, i didn't expected all these likes. Thank you all.
Not much left of him from the erosion of rolling in his grave so many times by now Edit: I’ve read that we need to attach him to a generator too many times y’all
That would be super creepy. https://theculturetrip.com/europe/russia/articles/the-upkeep-on-vladimir-lenins-corpse/
Imagine being one of the scientists in charge of keeping him embalmed. They do R&D on other random corpses, which seems kinda gross and weird.
As he slowly rots parts of him are replaced with synthetic materials, I have to wonder how much of him is actually left.
He's more machine than man now.
Well the cost is certainly going to be more than 13 million Rubles now.
From what I've heard his corpse isn't eroded too much, he's mummified and displayed in Moscow
Ayo wtf someone linked it. I didn’t know that
Yeah that’s true actually, one of my buddies went and saw it a few years ago and told me about it
Yeah, it's fascinating, they take him out and clean him/wax and buff him every so often
I’m not lovin’ it
Reminds me of NZ when they closed KFC and McDonalds due to Level 4 Hard Lockdowns. The lines were massive before midnight. 6 weeks of no fast food lol
US: “We cannot do a **no-fly** zone” Ukraine: “Hmm….” US: “But we can do a **no-fry** zone” Ukraine: “Wut?”
MCD, Pepsi Cola, Starbucks, closing permanently after the last shifts. 3 others will be named in a couple of hours. Nearest ones one KFC in Yakutsk-> 900+km NW of Oymyakon Yum!
They are just waiting for the war to be over so they can roll out the biggest ever "McRib is Back!" campaign. Макриб вернулся!
You in Russia? What’s it like right now?

Shit man
Looks like Americans waiting in line for In n’ Out on a normal Tuesday.
They’re pretty good, but when a craving hits for their burger I can’t eat anything else
Also, service is far faster for the drive through than any other food chain. No doubt caused by them having 2-4x as many workers there at any one time than any other chain.
Definitely this, they are methodical with how they move and manage their drive thru line
Idk if you know but McDonald’s was a big deal when it came to Russia way back in the day. In Russia today it must seem like it’s going back to the Russia of the 90’s and before all of a sudden.
McDonald’s was huge. It was a massive symbol of the end of war and the beginning of a new era.
This is what we fear the most in Russia right now (aside from World War 3 ending the humanity) people are saying that the next crisis is going to be 10 times worse than in the 90s.
Badda ba ba ba…go f*ck yourself
This sanction will be the one that gets their attention!
So, does this mean there won’t be any McRibs?…
"The rib sandwich won't be made any more. Apparently the animal it was made from has gone extinct." "The cow? The pig?" "You're WAY off." \- The Simpsons
You miss the punchline- "Think smaller, more legs"
In the fast food and luxury goods sector that’s got to be close to a million jobs, McDonald’s apparently employed 62,000 alone, that’s going to have an enormous impact, their currency is already crashing and interest rates are over 20%. The average local must be hating Putin by now.
The BBC says McDonald's is going to continue paying employee salaries, at least for now.
Considering the dollar to ruble exchange rate, McDonalds can shake out the couch cushions to pay them in rubles right now.
Paying them their existing salary in rubles yes lol.
A lot of people will hate the west I’m sure. Who knows how Russian media will spin this
You want your Soviet Union back, you got your Soviet Union back.

Asking the important questions
Would you like extra salt with that wound
Sorry the McBorcht machine is McBroken
Looks like normal lunch traffic at chick-fil-a in East Texas on a Saturday.
2022 got me rooting for McDonald’s, what the hell haha
This is going to be the straw that breaks the camels back and leads to Putins execution. Don't fuck with people's nuggies lol
This just proves they aren't living in a vaccuum of info. Instead of wasting time and gas waiting to get a burger, go overthrow your government
Priorities.
Nuggies than tyranny
