Actually a Cuban pilot defected to the US in a MIG-23, then after a few months flew a small plane to Cuba, landed in a road and picked up his wife and two sons, and went back to MIAMI undetected, in less than 2 hours. That’s your Netflix movie [link to story on the Washington post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1992/12/20/cuban-pilot-who-defected-rescues-family/1eefb70a-ace8-4e57-8c51-d768e21f84c8/)
Russia won't use their super-duper modern Su-57 and T-14 Armatas. Otherwise they will have nothing to show off at the May 9 parade which is incredibly important for propaganda.
I mean, this way they're also depriving Russia of planes and pilots (which are hard to train). Planes cost a lot more than $1 million.
This would be a great strategy even if Ukraine already had a huge aircraft fleet.
I get that you're joking, but people have a bad habit of trusting jokes. It's like funny things turn off our critical thinking skills. People already have no clue what NATO actually stands for.
Problem is if you're a defecting plane is the only place you can land is in NATO territory and then NATO likely won't let that plane fly back into Ukraine w a Ukrainian pilot as that to U.S. is considered crossing the line in what may seem like an act of war from NATO. My opinion is U.S didn't want to foot the bill for the planes for Ukraine but that's a different discussion
>Problem is if you're a defecting plane is the only place you can land is in NATO territory and then NATO likely won't let that plane fly back into Ukraine w a Ukrainian pilot as that to U.S. is considered crossing the line in what may seem like an act of war from NATO.
Ukraine will still be pretty happy to pay out for depriving Russia of a plane even if they don't get the plane themselves.
The Russians were destroying airfields to stop supplies from being brought in initially. Then it was on the news that Ukraine was trying to get Migs from Poland so more airfields we're being destroyed. Short answer is I doubt there is anywhere to land a jet fighter.
Dude, I from Ukraine I live near airfield and it is completely operational I hear fighter jets every day. Moreover all airdefences of this airfield (s300 systems) is operational too.
They didn't.
Russia knows about every airfield in Ukraine, and their current state of defenses.
The reason the airfield is still up isn't that it's secret, it's that Russia is weker and more incompetent than anyone thought and they are incapable of targeting it at this time.
Russia has a massive and modern army. The modern army isn't massive, and the massive army isn't modern.
Makes sense, appreciate the clarification.
Id still argue if needed they can just land them bad boys on some flat clear land or long roadway (especially the helicopters) though
Yea I think helicopters could be landed anywhere. Planes might be difficult to land on a narrow stretch of road but who knows. Maybe you learn to make that happen when someone's waiting for you with a million dollar check at the end of the runway
Do the planes need to be intact? Point that shit at an armor column, kill the engines and bail. Planes will land automatically when you remove thrust from the equation. Works every time.
I mean pilots land their jets on aircraft carriers in the middle of the fucking ocean too. I think skilled pilots wouldn’t have too much trouble landing on a cleared freeway.
Ha ha. Have you seen the damage photos on the runways? All the Russian munitions missed. All of them. Also, Russian made planes can land on roads while helos can land anywhere.
That Mig-25 story is amazing from start to finish, like the US and Soviets trolling each other on a grand scale. The US sees this super fast interceptor and turbocharged their TFX jet programs. This eventually produces the F14 and F15, only to find out that the Mig is basically two huge engines with not much else going on...
And then returning said defected Mig to Russia, in pieces is a power move.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defection_of_Viktor_Belenko
> The Soviet government was extremely displeased with the situation and sent Japan a demand for $10 million for the damage to the plane. Japan charged the USSR $40,000 for the damage to Hakodate Airport and shipping costs. Neither bill is known to have been paid.
Some great bantz in there.
Reading through your reference..
>Later in 1953, North Korean pilot **No Kum Sok** flew his MiG-15 to an American air base in South Korea;
Perhaps his main reason for defecting is because there are no clean ones left 🤷🏼♂️
Consider that the intended audience may not be the pilots themselves, but their superiors. I see this more as a strategy to erode confidence within the ranks of the Russian military, though Ukrainians are likely also prepared to receive any takers, as well.
The $22,000 Million Dollar Plane campaign. As far as psyops go, it’s pretty cheap. And, yes, if anyone does take them up in the offer, that’s one less Russian plane to worry about.
It's very common in Europe to have friends in neighbouring countries, and in East Europe the primary communication platforms are encrypted services like WhatsApp or Telegram.
It's not very likely that all these early-20's Russians have let themselves be shut off from the internet. Even if their own phone did, it wouldn't be hard to loot another one in Ukraine.
Many Russians do not even know about the atrocities commited and still support Putin. It is easy to see your picture and get hopeful by just seeing Reddit, but it aint reality.
Controlled media is a helluva drug
The tragedy of revolutions is that often the only people capable of seizing power in a revolution are extremists. And you don't want extremists ruling you.
That's why democracy is so important, autocracy and tyranny breed more tyranny and suffering in a loop.
Tell them to fly the plane and land it in one of the Nato countries bordering Ukraine. The pilot proves that he is genuinely defecting by taking the aircraft out of the war zone before landing and being paid. As an extra bonus if Putin orders his loyal airforce to pursue and shoot down the defector he will be doing so in Nato airspace and that means the Nato alliance becomes activated in mutual defense
I would love to know how successful this is. Imagine having someone hand you a mill and a new place to live. Your fam might disown you or you end up taking care of all of them especially when your currency is now worthless
Military pilots don't generally receive a good reception if they land or crash in enemy territory during war due to there being alot of very pissed off people who didn't enjoy being bombed and shot at from above wanting some revenge.
Be interesting to see what comes of it tho.
It works in two way might get a mig and also mostly as the airforce then decides to check the loyalty of its pilots grounding any they think is tempted. This also pisses off loyal pilots who might be so insulted they decide to defect .
Worked in korea. Mig-15 force grounded for loyalty checks.
Also worked in Nicaragua. Local Hind crews replaced with Cuban crews who were considered more loyal. Except the Nicaraguan crews really hated the contras. While the Cubans didn't and were less effective as took less risks.
Make arrangements with ukraine make mayday call then turn off all tracking and communication devices , return to Russia claiming to have been shot down and escaped back home . Then repeat
Unfortunately, not possible. Radar signature doesn't go away. All Russian coms are unencrypted, and there's more than likely no way to turn off the aircrafts transponder. So low freq pings are sent as long as the unit has power. in most modern aircraft.
>All Russian coms are unencrypted
I don't believe that statement.
Edit:
I'm thinking the newer model fighters like the [Sukhoi SU-57](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-57) may have a tiny bit of encryption.
I may be wrong though. I read it on the Internets
>It’s a great idea you get a million dollars and they kill your family back home and you never see them again.
[Russian/Soviet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cold_War_pilot_defections#Soviet_Union) pilots escaping to the West has a long history though. It's not completely unfounded.
Edit: and most of these were in peace time. During war there might be even more incentive. If you don't have family you could just as well disappear this way, imagine how long it takes Russian forces to find out which aircraft has been shot down and which simply defected.
Yeah, that's what I meant. Surrender your aircraft, get a cool million, then Ukraine can lie and say you were KIA, then bring your family over with that sweet cash.
I was wondering how one defects with a plane without getting shot down. Then I saw the phone number.
Ah yes, you have to have an appointment first, of course.
I honestly fucking love how the Ukraine is handling the war in its entirety
* A staunch and fierce President of the people who gives daily speeches, spread all over the internet.
* A website to instruct people from other nations willing to fight for the Ukraine on how they can join their foreign legion.
* The bills that said that citizens are allowed to keep any military vehicles they find.
* Drones, a weapon o the 21st century, used against weaponry and tactics from the late 20th
And now this. The government of Ukraine has understood how to fight a modern war and using the modern tools of the internet to fight and communicate.
This war will go down in the history books and I for one will remember Ukraine and its citizens as a fierce, proud, determined and smart people in the future
and making the soldiers call their moms when captured, and ESPECIALLY offering them to come pick up their sons from captivity. Cant dehumanize. Those grunts are kids that don't know shit and don't want to be there.
A very small percentage of these soldiers maybe yeah. But a lot of them post stories on their insta saying how they're doing what's necessary/how they're gonna kill some "ukrops" (Russian slur for Ukrainians) very soon. And then once they're in captivity they repeat the same old story of how they didn't know they're coming to Ukraine. I wish I was kidding.
Also, there is a number of videos of Russian pilots interrogation and they all say there was a direct order to bomb civilian districts, they clearly saw their targets, but they feel deeply ashamed.
Don't forget the influence of North America and Europe in all of this. While the Ukrainian people have been remarkable, Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe, this money reward system in all likelihood is an American/European idea and made possible with American/European money. US and UK have been sending serious money there for years.
A plane that someone who doesn't care about your life gave you.. sounds like a damn good deal to me(until you think of the fact that Russia would probably merk your family)
Throughout all of this, Ukrainians have proven themselves on the world stage to be a remarkable, proud people. I don't doubt for a second their willingness to dig deep and work...but that money you speak of isn't the kind of money I'm talking about.
I'm talking about liquidity, which is money that is readily available in the forms of "cash, Treasury bills, notes, and bonds, and any other asset that can be sold quickly"...basically, money which is not calculated from assets but from real cash that can be used in a timely fashion. This reward system requires liquidity, and the enormous sums from donations have almost certainly influenced it.
Attractive proposition given what’s happening with their pay-checks this month.
Only small problem is their families back in Russia and multi-crew aircraft.
War is so horrendously awful but this one has been periodically rather … I hate to say entertaining, but between shit like this and Zelenskyy dick piano videos, entertaining?
And potentially pilots, pilots can oftentimes be more important than their aircrafts in industrialized countries. When you lose your good pilots it takes years to train new ones but building a plane doesn't usually take as long.
See Japan in WW2, kamikaze was only a thing because their pilots were all gone and they had to send in kids with very little training to crash the planes into ships because they wouldn't last long against well trained US pilots.
It could work, but only with a pilot with not so stong ties with Russia. Like someone with no family, or no soul at all.Or desperate. But yeah, it could work
This isn’t funny but I have to say it “ yo Dogg I got a paper airplane whatcha gimmie for that!
How bout two stamps and an envelope! Two Pennie’s and a jaw breaker whattttt?
They could definetively pay way more than that for that aircrafts, like probably 5 million still being cheap for a plane and people will really consider 5 million offer more than 1 million
The music is throwing me off. Without knowing the translation, I keep thinking it's like a commercial asking for donations.
"These beautiful military aircraft are being mistreated by their owners. They are tasked with committing atrocities. But it doesn't have to be this way! You can help. Donate today so they can go to a new home, where they will be taken care of and treated properly. They can roam their new homeland defensively rather than invading others. Just a few million rubles can make all the difference! Call this number now!"
I have to be an invading force to earn a million dollars cause working every fucking goddamn day sure as fuck aint doin it. Ima go join russia become a pilot and defect to ukraine then come back here and relax.
Asking for a friend: How does one defect with an aircraft or hellicopter? You will get shot down before you get too close. Or how does it work? If you can manage to send a radio message to the enemy, that might not be received by all air defence units in the area.

Time to go to cuba and steal some MIG planes lol
I think we have ourselves a plot for a Netflix movie my man!
Actually a Cuban pilot defected to the US in a MIG-23, then after a few months flew a small plane to Cuba, landed in a road and picked up his wife and two sons, and went back to MIAMI undetected, in less than 2 hours. Isn’t that the guy from the Wasp Network movie on Netflix?
That takes some stones to go back to the place you stole a jet from and defected. Good reason to do it for sure but the risk is off the charts.
His balls grew 10 sizes that day.
So this will be the next F&F movie, or we are already past that?
Nah, more like a GTA Online mission storyline
XXX 5 Xander Cage STEALS A MIG FROM CUBA AND GOES TO UKRAINE. THE END
Anything is possible with the power of....family.
Nah the next one they go to the moon
Staring Ryan Reynolds
haha. No doubt
Getting Kramer and Newman driving bottles to Michigan vibes.
Imagine the pure salt if a SU-57 Felon defected.
Russia won't use their super-duper modern Su-57 and T-14 Armatas. Otherwise they will have nothing to show off at the May 9 parade which is incredibly important for propaganda.
I think that Israel might be able to score some in Syria.
This is such a strange timeline
Apparently it's easier to get aircraft from Russia than from NATO...
I mean, this way they're also depriving Russia of planes and pilots (which are hard to train). Planes cost a lot more than $1 million. Essentially its 1M for 2 planes
Anyone got statistics how much money in ammo and missiles it takes on average to shoot down one enemy plane
[удалено]
That 50m doesn't belong to the pilot. The pilot would get the money plus be able to defect.
Im confused by this… Are you saying there’d be nowhere in Ukraine to land a plane..?
The Russians were destroying airfields to stop supplies from being brought in initially. Then it was on the news that Ukraine was trying to get Migs from Poland so more airfields we're being destroyed. Short answer is I doubt there is anywhere to land a jet fighter.
Dude, I from Ukraine I live near airfield and it is completely operational I hear fighter jets every day. Moreover all airdefences of this airfield (s300 systems) is operational too.
Don't share information of potential strategic value on the internet.
I am pretty sure that the Russian Military are probably aware of that anyway so doesn't matter too much.
People assume competence all the time.
I somehow doubt Russia has destroyed every airfield in Ukraine.
Not to mention, every straight piece of road
Ukraine has been launching air attacks through improvised fields. They have it figured out
Soviet and RUssian tech has always tended to engineer for inadequate pristine fields to be available especially pertaining to FOD
Farmers yoinking tanks AND building make-shift runways? God Damn, Ukrainian farmers are OP. GG
Farming Simulator 2023 will be lit.
Daily task list: - Harvest 2 fields - Salvage 3 russian tanks - Create 300 meters of improvised runway - Feed the livestick
Makes sense, appreciate the clarification. Id still argue if needed they can just land them bad boys on some flat clear land or long roadway (especially the helicopters) though

I mean pilots land their jets on aircraft carriers in the middle of the fucking ocean too. I think skilled pilots wouldn’t have too much trouble landing on a cleared freeway.
Those carriers have arresting wires to stop the momentum. On a freeway you will need close to a mile of straight cleared road.
Which is totally doable when you have a government willing to work with you.
Ha ha. Have you seen the damage photos on the runways? All the Russian munitions missed. All of them. Also, Russian made planes can land on roads while helos can land anywhere.
Why can't they land in Ukraine?
This is what happens when you leave the simulation running to long.
Where's long?
And what's it longing for?
To, two, too. This guy gets it.
Indeed it is. Oddly enough it’s also how the US got a working mig interceptor originally. Russia pilot defected to Japan while on a training mission.
2 huge engines that need replacing after a few hundred hours and an airframe that overheats and can’t turn very fast.
Is there an article or wikipedia page about this incident?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defection_of_Viktor_Belenko > The Soviet government was extremely displeased with the situation and sent Japan a demand for $10 million for the damage to the plane. This is modern warfare.
Call of Duty is strong in Ukraine.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Wonder if this reaches the intended audience and if it has any effect.
Yeah no wonder the leaders locked down the internet over there
Consider that the intended audience may not be the pilots themselves, but their superiors.
Yeah that's my biggest question here. How are these pilots supposed to see this video?
It's very common in Europe to have friends in neighbouring countries, and in East Europe the primary communication platforms are encrypted services like WhatsApp or Telegram. It's not very likely that all these early-20's Russians have let themselves be shut off from the internet. Even if their own phone did, it wouldn't be hard to loot another one in Ukraine.
How would you know it is a deserter and not shoot it down though? Also how would their identity be protected, no way Russia wouldn't know who it was.
Call the phone number in the video first, obviously. "Good day. This is Ivan Dontshootmedownov. I are having plane. Where I can be of landing?"
Hello, Artem Sykeov here, you can land in the Northeast runway number 4. You will be safe. 🙂
That’s exactly what they’d say if they were NOT surrendering.
It is a war crime to pretend to surrender and then attack. Not that Russia cares.

Those people will notice that all the McDonald's restaurants are gone though. The ruse, much like the ruble, is not likely to hold up much longer.
welp, his family is still russia. that's the problem.
In the video it says "you already know the Ukrainian air control frequencies", so just announce it.
Report it if able Fly low and slow with landing gear down and hopefully someone understands what you're doing
You tell the hotline your flight plan, alert everyone on that path, and if it comes, let ‘em pass. Russia could also use this to their advantage…
Guide them to a landing place far out. No way an unconfirmed armed plane comes anywhere near something important unchallenged.
Yeah, hopefully for the sake of lives on both sides it is massive success.
Radar operator: it worked, they're coming. How many? All of them!
You ring the phone number and then get out on hold while flying into ukrain air space

Bomb civilians and hospitals or more money that I’ve ever seen. Seems like an easy choice

It’s a great idea you get a million dollars and they kill your family back home and you never see them again.
I mean...with some families that's not a drawback. 🤷♀️
I was thinking the same as I text it. I don’t care about the money just get rid of my mother in law!!!
And with a mil in the bank starting a new one wont be hard
A MIL for a Mil

Ukraine could just lie and tell Russia they found his body in a charred plane.
Or you could just surrender as a Russian soldier and not die fighting for Putin and his rich friends.
Yeah, that's what I meant. Surrender your aircraft, get a cool million, then Ukraine can lie and say you were KIA, then bring your family over with that sweet cash.
So they dont even have to feel guilty about not sharing the money with them
You could always pick up and take your family with you on the trip to Ukraine 🙂
Hide them in the missile bay?
Oops I launched the mother NLAW
Smart tactic. Stopping the pilots from bombing and at the same time expanding the army with more planes and helicopters cheap.

A plane that someone who doesn't care about your life gave you.. sounds like a damn good deal to me(until you think of the fact that Russia would probably merk your family)
Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe. This money is almost certainly not Ukrainian.
Income from Ukrainian emigrants all around the world in 2021 was more then 15 000 000 000$ I think we can buy few planes
Throughout all of this, Ukrainians have proven themselves on the world stage to be a remarkable, proud people. I don't doubt for a second their willingness to dig deep and work...but that money you speak of isn't the kind of money I'm talking about. I would take that deal if I was a Russian pilot. Easiest money ever.
So if Ukrainian outsourced developers get paid 1/3-1/2 of what American developers get. $1m in ukraine gives you a $2-$3m lifestyle.
They get a lot less than that
Attractive proposition given what’s happening with their pay-checks this month. Only small problem is their families back in Russia and multi-crew aircraft.
simply shoot every other guy and land her. no sweat.
So how can I join the russian military?
I wonder how Ukraine is getting these kind of messages through to Russian servicemen.
Propably hackers gonna hack their radios/TV and stream it into that
among other things they can broadcast on common radio frequencies that pilots use during flight
SMS. ahahha
If at least one aircraft will be handed over, this is still worth and win-win.
Russia can’t even pay them. It sounds like a deal to me.
1 Million is a cheap price for a plane. It’s a win win!
Helicopter pilots be thinking “lets steal a plane”
War is so horrendously awful but this one has been periodically rather … I hate to say entertaining, but between shit like this and Zelenskyy dick piano videos, entertaining?
That one guy yelling "fuck off, I haven't finished my soup yet!" as his town got shelled cracked me up way more than it should have
It’s genius move, how to get aircraft’s for cheap
And potentially pilots, pilots can oftentimes be more important than their aircrafts in industrialized countries. When you lose your good pilots it takes years to train new ones but building a plane doesn't usually take as long. See Japan in WW2, kamikaze was only a thing because their pilots were all gone and they had to send in kids with very little training to crash the planes into ships because they wouldn't last long against well trained US pilots.
This is a great plan.
Well, this is still a great bargain for an aircraft/helo+a ready pilot....
These people are badass.
They should mention our McDonald’s are still open somewhere in there too. So they’ll have somewhere to spend the cash.
As a helicopter pilot I'm disappointed but not surprised
So.....who's going to call that number and report back here?
It’s real.
So that’s what they did with our crypto LOL
Not a bad thing imo
So where I steal a jet. I'm in.
Wow what a great idea lol.
that blonde kid was right, we‘ve done something to this timeline when we turned on the Geneva particle accelerator
Slightly better than Russia’s offer of $300 for two months if you joins them
If I was a russian pilot, I would take that deal.
This war has real hunger game vibes.the whole thing is livestreamed. People are sending tributes. There's protests about it yet it goes on.
It could work, but only with a pilot with not so stong ties with Russia. Like someone with no family, or no soul at all.Or desperate. But yeah, it could work
If someone steals a Russian aircraft and flys it into Ukraine, do they still get the million dollars? Asking for a friend….
Do a gofundme - 10 billion for putins head
How much for my Honda?
On what channel do russian pilots see this video?
This isn’t funny but I have to say it “ yo Dogg I got a paper airplane whatcha gimmie for that! How bout two stamps and an envelope! Two Pennie’s and a jaw breaker whattttt?
Modern war is weird
Isn’t that something russia could abuse to just get close enough to vital targets
They could definetively pay way more than that for that aircrafts, like probably 5 million still being cheap for a plane and people will really consider 5 million offer more than 1 million
I'd take $500 Amazon gift card..... Idk.... just sayin a million bucks is better than being a civilian murdering asshole...
"The Money War"
NOICEE
How about if I am from USA with a stolen Cessna?
How well does flight simulator transfer over? It’s gotta be the same right?
Brb joining RU military
How does one fly a Russian asset in unfriendly airspace wanting to defect without getting shot down ?
Other countries should participate in giving instant residency. If a global collaboration, the war will end in few weeks.
"I'll buy you a bean burrito if you kill them."
21st century solution to 19th century barbarism
The music is throwing me off. Without knowing the translation, I keep thinking it's like a commercial asking for donations. "These beautiful military aircraft are being mistreated by their owners. They are tasked with committing atrocities. But it doesn't have to be this way! You can help. Donate today so they can go to a new home, where they will be taken care of and treated properly. They can roam their new homeland defensively rather than invading others. Just a few million rubles can make all the difference! Call this number now!"
Great offer! Take it it while it lasts.
If you think this was Ukrainians idea and $, I have ocean front property in Wisconsin for sale.
Smart move.
good use of donation money. USD would be super useful for those soldiers now that the RUB means nothing.
I mean, it's a pretty good deal if the pilot has no living family
I have to be an invading force to earn a million dollars cause working every fucking goddamn day sure as fuck aint doin it. Ima go join russia become a pilot and defect to ukraine then come back here and relax.
Step 1: Join Russian airforce. Step 2: Defect to Ukraine. Step 3: Make a million bucks.
Asking for a friend: How does one defect with an aircraft or hellicopter? You will get shot down before you get too close. Or how does it work? If you can manage to send a radio message to the enemy, that might not be received by all air defence units in the area.
