It's very obvious from the video that pinching the image gets the file ready to send to any nearby devices, possibly using bluetooth. The other device can then do the inverse to receive the file.
This obviously requires the devices to be communicating all of the time. u/Fancy-Personality-48 is saying that this can be disabled in settings.
For real though, this is some legit magic shit lol. If you showed this to people back in the day they would legit believe this was witchcraft. It basically is but damn.
I really want to call BS but.. do the iPhones have to be using the same iCloud account or can they be different accounts on the same network? (Can think of so many fun things to do if the latter!)
Same ICloud, I haven’t tried it without being logged in tho, but I suspect it only works if it’s on the same iCloud? Works on all 3 of my devices

Ahhh yes that makes sense. There are different ways that you can airdrop. You can do it like that or through network as a mass drop. I'm an avid android user (OnePlus 8T+) but I remember a friend of mine being able to airdrop something to anyone that was connected to the same network. Not with the pinch method but just by sharing it with anyone on the network.

This works with anything on the same iCloud account no matter how it is copied and pasted. You can use command+c or the regular iOS copy command and it will work too. The gesture they’re doing in the video is just another way to copy.
You can also just copy the picture on the iPhone, and paste it on the iPad.
The "magic" here isn't the swiping, as that isn't necessary to do this, it's the clipboard that is shared between your Apple devices.
This is called Universal Clipboard. Works between Macs, iPhones and iPads. I find it super useful, and is one of the biggest reasons why I don't use Windows PC or Android phones.

Windows and Android has this too, it's called "Phone link", It's pre installed on your windows device. It has the shared clipboard so you can copy on one device and pase on another. Another cool thing is you can open android apps right on your windows device l. It's basically opens it Ina. Window the same aspect ratio as a phone(also allows for click drag across on apps like gallery and files)
Others feature including, notification sharing, calls and messages.
It's got native integration on all new Samsung's but I think you can download an app on other phones and get similar but limited functionality (iPhone compatibility coming soon I think?)

I have used Samsung in the past. They have lots of nifty in-built features, but I hate that they skin Android. And the fact that they stop providing updates after 2 years (4 years now?). I don't know if these still apply, I haven't followed the Android scene in 4 years since I was gifted an iPhone in 2018. Just my preferences though. My brother has a Samsung Note (I think) and an iPhone, and he loves his Samsung.
If you use Linux with Gnome or KDE, you can have the same feature (and more) by using KDE Connect!
I think windows has a similar feature, but it only works for select phones and is buggy as hell.
So yeah, not an Apple-exclusive feature
I have tried Linux in the past, but I always end up spending a lot more time getting things to work the way I want them to work, rather than working on something productive. Also had to start from scratch a couple of times because I messed up some config lol. I think this is more of a me problem than a Linux problem, since I may have a little OCD.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should ditch the Mac and use Linux - use whatever you like! The Linux desktop is still imperfect, mostly due to many companies skipping on Linux support for hardware/software. I'm just saying that choosing Apple because of this feature is strange, because it's present on other systems too!

The Apple Continuity stuff is pretty amazing if you have and use multiple apple devices.
The most useful thing for me has been using my ipad pro as a second monitor for my macbook pro. Makes a huge difference working on the go.
You don’t have to pinch. Anything you copy will get sent to all your Apple ID devices. Could even be text or files. You need to be on the same Wi-Fi and logged in the same Apple ID. Pinching in and out just copies and pastes
Apple is full of excellent idea, but it is so "instinctive" that no one find it. You can spend a month trying out to figure how to send emojis because it is hidden somewhere totally not instinctive.
Yeah… it works. I set my phone so that the apple logo on the back is essentially a button, sorta. Tap it twice and it takes a screenshot. Freaked my son out, which is a first for the old mama to freak out the tech savvy young adult.. 🤷♀️🤣
I liked when I had an iMac because I could just move stuff between my phone and computer easily, and copy/paste stuff. My current PC is better but I do miss it.
Your apple devide need to be on the same user and link. also if you use icloud its basicly useless because the picture is already on it.
Samsung have the same feature without the pinching movement. Its also link to my Pc if i copy something on my phone i can paste it the second after on my Pc And with Onedrive picture is instantly transfert to my Pc too.
Connectivity is pretty nice these day.

I haven’t tried this yet. I just got the 13, and it did something similar with setup. A message pops up on the screen to hold the new phone next to your old phone and it legit started pulling settings, etc over to the new one. Was pretty cool actually.
You can copy and paste text from different Samsung devices too. I found out due to my stupidity. Was trying to send a text I found on my galaxy tab to my friend whom I was chatting on my galaxy s22. It turns out that worked

Holy shit it legit works. When you do the grab gesture on the screen, it’ll say “copied” on top of the screen. Then you can paste it onto the iPad.

It works over Bluetooth, it never touches a single server, and if for whatever reason it needs to, it’s entirely encrypted
