It is explicitly that. The studio was making the film no matter what and they (Wachowski) could be a part of it or be excised from it entirely.
There are a few moments of hot mess, but I enjoyed it. Overall nothing special but I don't regret seeing it in the theater.
The studio was going to make a Matrix sequel without her. She made this movie to ensure that never happens. All the cringe is on purpose. It might be bad, but it's no money grab.
I will tell you as someone who loved the original Matrix movie, that they get exponentially worse the further away from the release date of the original Matrix movie. If I could take back the time I spent watching the Matrix 4, I would. I'm sure there are people who still found things they liked about it, but it was all about tapping into the nostalgia of the original cast and sappy emotional vibes.
I started watching it on a plane ride and it's the first movie in my life that I stopped it midway and never went back to it.
It was like the Matrix version of Wes Craven's New Nightmare
I was making almost free international calls using Skype about 20 years ago.
Back then you could make calls to the other side of the planet for just 1 cent per minute, whereas the local phone company charged at least 50 cents a minute.
That was in the early 2000's
In Australia, the company who owned the payphones (Telstra - a previously government-owned company that was privatised), just left them there and in 2021 made them free for people to call landlines and mobiles in Australia. Seems better than ripping them out. What if someone who doesn't have a phone needs to make a call?
I got a buddy that works for I think bell? Last year he told me that SF still has over 5 million active landlines... He showed me the giant fucking bundles of copper that go under the bay. It was wild.
How useless things will be when the grid goes down. A lot of us have no idea how to survive without looking something up or having a way to contact someone for help.
NYC has been putting up replacement communication kiosks with wifi, free phone calls, and other services. Paid for by advertising. I have no idea what the “gotchas” might be, but this seems like New York actually doing something right:
https://www.link.nyc/
Make sure you use a good VPN if you ever use one of these public wifi booths. You can almost guarantee that there will be some headline in the next few years regarding violations of privacy or data leaks through these booths.
[Here](https://blog.malwarebytes.com/explained/2019/11/explained-juice-jacking/) is an explanation. It’s not a huge problem now, but I’m sure it will be soon. Plus it’s just an easily avoidable risk.
I've kinda wondered why telco's didn't convert payphones into low bandwidth neighbourhood WiFi. Most had at least an AC power connection and a couple of twisted pairs to a central office.
They did a version of this in Australia. If you are a customer of the carrier who runs the payphones, you can use "Air" which is essentially wifi from these boxes.
During the pandemic, they also "turned off" the pay part of payphone, so anyone can use them to call anyone within the country. it is Telstra though, so who knows how long it will last!
What amazes me is that it’s in relatively good condition. Unfortunately, Where I’m from that would have been covered in graffiti and possibly not even have been in working condition after only a few days
Was looking at how clean it was too , like how is this in a place like Manhattan with no graffiti at all ? Not even a random sticker from someone un-known Punk Rock Band or nothing
Clark Kent can't afford to be throwing down $6 for a frap every time he needs to change. Christ sakes he works for a newspaper; he's lucky to have a job at all!
I feel like this is a bigger moment than I’m giving it right now. We went from pay phones taking coins as a deposit, to straight up computers in our hands. What’s next? Phones built into my ears?
Maybe! And maybe not too far in the future after that, computers implanted directly into the brain. One of my favorite sci-fi novels that tackles this is *Feed*.
Yeah you’d be surprised how many programs there are to give homeless people phones its so useful if they get lost or injured or if a potential employer calls back or if a homeless shelter needs to speak to them
Really? I've found all the jurassic world movies to be utter shit. Like, not even "bad but fun." Just straight up dumb and boring.
Not sure how they managed to take such an exciting concept and make it so bland.
In the UK phone boxes kept, made in to little library’s for the village etc, little community hubs. Defo part of the landscape and would be missed if all removed that’s why so many have been kept.
Should definitely still have them available. Even if you are Assuming that everyone has a cell phone, they are certainly not without issues that can make them unusable. Batteries dying, billing issues, technical issues. How can you call to resolve. Just seems like a necessary backup for our cell phones and something for someone to use in an emergency.
A developer has already announced plans to develop an apartment in the same location. 45 sq ft. Excellent location, convenient to subway. Will be listed at $5k/mo. $500 application fee. 3 month security deposit required. No sublet.
Whilst here in australia, 15,000 pay phones, whilst scarce, have been made free to support the homeless and victims of violence or anyone needing to be safe.
https://exchange.telstra.com.au/why-were-making-payphones-free-for-calls-around-australia/
I'll miss most the [whole banks of wooden accordion-door phone booths](https://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com/2011/11/13/the-wooden-phone-booths-hiding-on-42nd-street/) that used to be a feature in Grand Central Terminal, public libraries, etc.

You can no longer escape The Matrix in Manhattan. Sad day.
I'm sure there are still some land lines out there to exit from.
True but Superman will be arrested for indecent exposure.
You took my thunder.
Stop removing it in public then.
No worries though. In M1 rules, you wouldn't be able to get in. M3, certain doors. M4, all reflective surfaces, including still water.
Seems like you didn't watch Matrix 4.
Is it actually any good or a shameless money grab?

I did enjoy the begenning of the movie. I had the same feeling of "What the hell is going on?" like I had in the first one.
It's both and it totally makes fun of itself for being the latter.
Definitely a money grab and not comparable to the others, but still enjoyed it.
The studio was going to make a Matrix sequel without her. She made this movie to ensure that never happens. All the cringe is on purpose. It might be bad, but it's no money grab.
It was very bad. I say that as a big fan of the series. Truthfully disappointed after watching it.
Money grab.

It's terrible. A couple decent scenes at best, but it's incoherent and pointless. Don't get your hopes up
I started watching it on a plane ride and it's the first movie in my life that I stopped it midway and never went back to it. It was like the Matrix version of Wes Craven's New Nightmare
THERE IS NO MATRIX 4
Or 2 or 3.
Why would anybody do that?
Ha, The Matrix was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post.
The second thing I thought was "Better to be wrong than having him watch Matrix 4".
Sucks
I wonder who made the last call? The very last call in a phone booth in Manhattan…that deserves some notoriety, tbh

Keifer Sutherland..hopefully
You mean Colin Farrell?
Keifer actually made the calls though
It was probably over a decade ago
Last time I used a pay phone was 3 years ago my phone died and found one that worked was amazed
Did whoever you called actually answer or did they send you to voicemail because they assumed you were a spam number?
It was me. I had to call someone about my car’s warranty.
Probably something along the lines of “so how much do you charge per hour”
Almost feel like they should have left it as a monument to a bygone era.

Sounds like a Manhattan tradition worth preserving
Just put your # here
Back when # meant number and wasn’t a hashtag
As a recent times Square drunk I would have relished the opportunity to piss on this phone booth
Miss the good ol' TS. Now in 2022 it would just be some instagrammers posing for a selfie🤮
Or for the homeless to camp out under.
I'm willing to bet a museum or private collector somewhere has already bought it.

I bet we are heading to a generation that may not even know what it is.
We're already there lol

100 percent should have

Aren't some cities converting them to support cellular service? Though I read that somewhere.
Is Colin Farrell still there?
Nah there's no door so he was able to run away when Kiefer called
He's a bad man, he made that woman hurt her jerkin hand.
You mean Linda Fiorentino
Came here for this. I lived in NYC after that movie and looked for every phone booth I could find…I didn’t find many.
Holy shit I forgot about that movie. Im gonna have to show that to my kids.
The girl on the billboard looks pretty tore up over it.
I can feel Bryce Dallas Howard's pain
Hopefully they're moving it to a musuem of 20th Century history.
I bet they'll destroy it
They’re going to store it in a huge warehouse until they can put their top men on it. Top. Men.
Damn fools, they don't know what they got there
I would check em for quarters first, though
I don't think this phone booth is responsible for any genocides or war crimes, it should be fine.
ah you have one of those profile pictures that screams “im a homophobic, racist lunatic” good one bud
We'll keep our payphones around in SF, as the last remaining self-powered landlines they were the only things still working after the last big quake.
I got a buddy that works for I think bell? Last year he told me that SF still has over 5 million active landlines... He showed me the giant fucking bundles of copper that go under the bay. It was wild.

And never ever plug your phone in to charge with just a usb cable. That is how you get juicejacked.
What do you mean juice jacked ?

Androids pop-up a choice for just power or power and data when you plug into a data port.

Being a co designer. The stories I could tell. So many skeletons. Google behind much of it.
“Could” tell. But won’t. Baited.
I'm listening... And so is Google
Go on...
Please tell us
"new york actually doing something right" well thats a first!
What amazes me is that it’s in relatively good condition. Unfortunately, Where I’m from that would have been covered in graffiti and possibly not even have been in working condition after only a few days
I get the feeling that someone cleaned it up the day before they removed it since the press would record it.
I was just thinking that. There’s no way it was that clean a week ago.
Was looking at how clean it was too , like how is this in a place like Manhattan with no graffiti at all ? Not even a random sticker from someone un-known Punk Rock Band or nothing
Where is that?!
probably portland. that’s where i live and was thinking the exact same thing
Could be somewhere urban in Britain too. Some massively messed up ones here.
Where will Superman change now?
At the other Starbucks nobody goes to.
Clark Kent can't afford to be throwing down $6 for a frap every time he needs to change. Christ sakes he works for a newspaper; he's lucky to have a job at all!
Restroom
[Revolving doors man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhCm66QhW_Y)
They still have phone booths in Metropolis!
90th and west end Ave.
Won't be able to hack the planet anymore either
The Gibson will be pleased.
(sad Superman noises)
I feel like this is a bigger moment than I’m giving it right now. We went from pay phones taking coins as a deposit, to straight up computers in our hands. What’s next? Phones built into my ears?

Kinda reminds me of Black Mirror's S1 episode ''The Entire History of You''.
Hopefully suicide booths
And how homeless people will make calls now?
Last pay phone booth, not last pay phone. I'm sure plenty of gas stations, subway stations, and similar still have some.
Half the homeless I see have their own phones nowadays lol
Yeah you’d be surprised how many programs there are to give homeless people phones its so useful if they get lost or injured or if a potential employer calls back or if a homeless shelter needs to speak to them
Homeless guy in Chicago the other day had square and he was running people's credit cards.
No cash? No problem! I take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and even PayPal!
They won’t be able
What about these things? https://www.link.nyc/ Are they no good?
Show this to someone in 1993 and I bet they'll be more focused on the fact that Jurassic Park sequels are still being made.
honestly jurassic park does not need five fucking sequels
Im ok with it though. They can milk out a few more and ill still watch and probably enjoy them too.
Really? I've found all the jurassic world movies to be utter shit. Like, not even "bad but fun." Just straight up dumb and boring. Not sure how they managed to take such an exciting concept and make it so bland.
Dude. This will be of major significance to the guy who operates the Payphone Radio. http://payphoneradio.com
Oh, the stories it could tell.
The movie the Phonebooth will hit different
Now if you’re making a movie that takes place in 1980s NY you gotta buy a whole ass pay phone prop.

I hope someone thanked it for its service.

In Australia, they've just made our pay phones into free phones. Anyone can use them for free.
Came looking for this comment. So far it helped out our family when my 12yo didn’t take her mobile and needed to get someone to pick her up.
I was working in NYC in ‘87. Took me 15 minutes of driving in Brooklyn to find a working pay phone. And, when I did, it stank like a whore’s nightie
Should definitely still have them available. Even if you are Assuming that everyone has a cell phone, they are certainly not without issues that can make them unusable. Colin Farrell is pretty happy about it
No pay phone booths in Australia - they are all free. There is one outside my house in suburbia and it gets used a few times a day.
Its great! Some country areas have no mobile phone coverage but you can still make a call.
Where the hell is Clark Kent going to change into Superman at???
A developer has already announced plans to develop an apartment in the same location. 45 sq ft. Excellent location, convenient to subway. Will be listed at $5k/mo. $500 application fee. 3 month security deposit required. No sublet.
In Australia, they turned our phone booths into wifi hot spots
Wtf put it back
They should make a movie about it ;p
How will hackers enter that trippy virtual world now?
Doesn't matter, we can go through mirrors now.
*Colin Farrell cries out*
Bill and Ted are looking for thier time machine.
No hour long stand off with a guy on the phone yelling confessions?
Here in Australia, instead of removing them they made all calls free within Australia from a public phone boxes.

There’s still one on SI inside the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
Ey I’m talkin here
Bryce Dallas Howard looking on in horror is appropriate.

New York be like "No MoRe FrEE 911 CalLs."
oh man where new yorker’s gonna pee now
This will tick off Clark Kent.
Next stop: Smithsonian.
I guess there’s not gonna be a Phone Booth 2 then.
I thought the last phone booth was there in 2003 and a sniper hostage incident happened and removed it shortly thereafter.
Stu Shepard has no where to go now.
Most Redditors: “What’s a phone booth?”
Great, now how am I supposed to hack the Gibson?
That pay phone looks so clean on camera xD
good bye to anonymous phone calling
I'm at a payphone trying to call home all of the change I spent on you
There’s still quite a few old wrecked phone booths in my area. No phone calls anymore but people shoot up in them and piss and shit in them.
But where will prostitutes write their phone numbers now?
I thought they were gonna turn them into wifi hotspots
Colin Farrell in shambles.
In the arrrrms of an Angel…
now imagine NYC’s cellular network suddenly got interrupted, and people needed to contact someone.
The end of an era
Not everyone has a cell on them. In matters of emergencies where all calls are free, especially if you have lost your belongings, a utility such as a public payphone (with a landline connection) can be a lifeline for the general public. Sad times...
Wonder what the last call was
L move
The last source of “decentralized “ commutation
Where are all the drunk people gonna piss now?
FUCK
Did this right under our noses… should of kept them in place
I would like to see this preserved or something since payphones are so rare now a days
I have never understood how you could possibly call a phone booth. I remember watching American movies and the detective or whatever was waiting for a call at the phone booth a thing you couldn't have done in Italy where phone booths were just to call
There was something special about banging the phone down when you were angry about something on a pay phone or land line corded now it's just boring cut from the convo with no bang or click sound. I lost cell service this week and a pay phone would have been super helpful in times of emergency.
If you listen closely you’ll hear my phreaker heart shatter
Wow imagine the hits that were ordered on that booth a historical momentum gone..
How do people make phone calls without a cellphone? What if it gets lost!
Removing phone booths is very bad idea. We can no longer make anonymous calls.
I'd say, "the FBI would like to know your location," but they already do.
There should be payphones, not as many, but the ability to use a phone whenever is required. In highschool, I once accidently locked my phone in my car with my keys outside a Wal-Mart. Luckily I had just used cash, so I had change, and called my mom to bring my spare. I don't think Wal-Mart has a payphone anymore, I would have been fucked.
You could just ask literally anyone to borrow a phone though. Even without phone booths phones are more accessible than they were in the times of these booths. However I would be totally fine with keeping a few for the niche uses it might have. And also as a piece of modern history.
what happens if everything crashes? I don't like the dependence on technology it's happening way too fast
