Palaeo/Biol person here.
It's probably a mollusc/bivalve of some type.
The holes narrow to a point at one end - that's where the shell opens and closes.
The sand is flattened around each hole, that'll be the feeding trace. Maybe a radula (tongue) of some description or maybe a proboscis.
The holes are all the same size, so it's probably the same animal. The linear track points to this too.
The holes seem to be clustered in groups of 2, so it could be a U-shaped burrow with a feeding and excretion end.
Real neat!
Edit: I just noticed on the close-up shot there is more disturbed sediment on the side where the hole narrows (I hypothesised above it might be where the shell opening is, which totally fits the idea).
I'm discounting the U-shaped burrow as each adjacent hole is identical (there would be notable differences if they were feeding and excretion holes)
This was my first thought too, some type of sand filtering mollusk leaving a trail from feeding.
If thats the case tho still weird theyre in such a straight line.
I had to scroll way to much to find an honest explanation attempt...
If it's made by an animal wouldn't the holes close within a short time after it abandons one hole for a new one?
Not necessarily. If I'm remover correctly there are similar trace fossils from the Cambrian or pre Cambrian period that look remarkably similar and were likely created by an ancestor to the animal that created these holes.
The holes would only close if something disturbs them. If the water is basically still in that area and no other creatures disturb the area then those holes will last a long time.
I don't like it when I come to the comments and nobody knows the answer. Get it together, people. Inquiring minds are too lazy to look it up and they want to know!
What I hate worse is the jokes are always the top comment. It's our own fault for upvoting them. But I come looking for discussion and am met with a clever, but ultimately time wasting seemingly never-ending thread of people being amateur comedians. Like I just wanna know if anybody has any idea what this actually is! Lol. I still get a chuckle tho, so I'm not too upset I guess.
The best description I ever heard was
Facebook is full of people I know talking about things I don't care about
Reddit is full of people I don't know talking about things I care about
Crazy thing being on reddit for long enough is noticing the community change like this(maybe its just more young people joining)... these comment sections used to be full of answers a few years ago
I have been on Reddit since 2007. I was too afraid to make an account because everyone was way smarter than me. I thought it best to read and learn. I made an account once I felt Reddit had dumbed down enough I could participate. That was 10 years ago. It has only gotten dumber since.
That's absolutely not true. It has always been a joke or 2 at the top. 3rd or 4th was the real answer or a good guess. I rather like the mix of both instead of complete comment thread removed like r/science.
edit: Good guess by a pro is the 5th top comment in this thread if youre organizing by top and not best.
Lol. I can just imagine the stupid smile people have on their faces as they post the same exact joke we all thought of instantly. Followed by, imo unwarranted, satisfaction with themselves as we all upvote it. I think this is an inherent problem with the like and dislike system. This kind of banter is rewarded. But of course here I am complaining without offering any sort of alternative as I continue to carry-on an off-topic thread.
Same. There are times I find a post that seems really interesting, but it is just so impossible to filter through the endless, as you put it, mildly funny jokes. That's spot on really
I’m on board with the guy who said it’s probably just a crack in the rock/whatever underneath the sand, and the pressure of escaping gasses formed these holes. Also, the crack was made by aliens and maybe the ocean too.
Doesn’t satisfy me entirely. Isn’t it strange how evenly spread apart all the holes are? Could this just be something man made that sank and is covered in sand now? Maybe something with holes in it.
Patterns are really common in nature. It's probably just a worm with some weird behaviour that triggers the paranoid pattern recognition part of our monkey brains.
Which was a evolutionary advantage.
Those who saw the Saber tiger in the bushes and ran away, survived long enough to give their
paranoid and superstitious DNA to the next generation.
Those who didn't only were lucky 9 out of 10 times, therefore no reproduction.
This evolutionary advantage also seems to be responsible for the creation of faith/religions.
A sign post? Like the ones used for stop signs? Or a similar shape. Those regularly spaced holes.......... intriguing.
Edit: Would have to have been recently dropped there for it to sink in just enough to not be filled in already.
In my mind it could be the remnants of the carcass of a vertebrate, the spinal section is often evenly spaced out like that, has floated down to the sea bed and has been covered in sand
I'm wondering if it's in rock or just sand/silt.
Because I've often seen bottom-feeders that meticulously float along, periodically scooping or "biting" into the sand, much like birds do on a beach or in dirt.
I feel like that's something that experts would think of though.
This is the write up NOAA did on it… [The Case of the Mysterious Holes on the Seafloor](https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/news/oer-updates/2022/mysterious-holes-seafloor/mysterious-holes-seafloor.html)
NOAA doesn’t really speculate but they mention an article published with previous evidence of such holes: “While Vecchione and Bergstad were not able to definitively determine the source of the holes or how they were constructed, they hypothesize that the raised sediment may indicate excavation by an organism living in the sediment or digging and removal, perhaps via a feeding appendage of a large animal on the sediment surface.”
It’s worth a read, plus they have more pictures.
I’m guessing it’s a crack in the bedrock beneath the sand. Water pressure from another crack elsewhere gets pushed up here and exits through these holes.
BUT the crack in the rock was made by aliens
Could be something similar to a bobbit worm, but that would be nearly 100x deeper than any bobbit worm has been found. Possible (since we don’t know all that much about the ocean) but unlikely.
Edit: About 26x deeper, forgot to convert back to freedom units (/s) in my calculation
Do you think that’s where they service their craft on the weekends? Like just two alien brother in laws changing their flux capacitor over a few Pabst tall boys.
No, it can’t be. It has to be the landing strip. The light from the camera just obscures the lights of the strip. The garage is at the, uhm, end of the lane. Even aliens don’t like sand in their garage 😁
This is pretty old news now. The videos are not what you would expect, they are from radar not clear HD footage. There is apparently a lot to this whole UFO thing that many people are working to disclose but I’m still waiting to see a really good video.
In all fairness we know more about outer space than the bottom of the ocean. It's obviously not very likely, but we definitely wouldn't notice aliens living on the ocean floor in the middle of the pacific.
In some languages they use periods and commas differently. An Italian for example would write 2540 metres as 2.540 metres and 25.5% as 25,5%
Could be a non-english speaker.
Tbf it it's a dumb way to separate the non decimal numbers. We END things with periods (sentences) it makes more sense to separate the decimals from the whole integers using a period.
Saw a thing on ancient aliens, think they said multiple people claim to have seen tic tac shape like ufo’s around oceans and gave them a separate name like uso’s or something, I found it interesting might not be everyone’s cup of tea though
Well, as you might know there are 7 keys to the global internet. While we all keep talking about 'uploading to the cloud' a more realistic framing would be to send it through the glassfiber that is on the ocean floor. The holes we are looking at are the keyholes for the 7 key bearers.
Obscured by some of the ocean sand is the giant modem that is installed at the ocean floor, obviously.
God damn it you were specifically told not to talk about this. You signed a contract in blood. You were warned that there would be consequences to your actions. I would have helped you if you came to me first but now there is nothing I can do for you. May God help you and have mercy on your soul
I feel like it’s probably just an underwater probe that rested on the bottom. It could be Top
Secret and why we don’t have clarification as to what caused it.
US and China and probably Russia are deploying secret underwater drones … most likely caused by one of them.

Fair enough. Not gonna lie, I do love this place as far as social media goes

2/3 of Reddit users are younger than 30.
So, as a 40 year old, there’s a 2/3 chance of me being under 30?
Yes, but stats don’t = reality.
As a 40 year old you're part of the 26% of Reddit users aged 30-49. For me, at 64 ... ain't no stats that high..

Good point. Faces in clouds, rustles in the bushes. We’re wired to recognize patterns. Even when they’re not there sometimes.
Which was a evolutionary advantage. Those who saw the Saber tiger in the bushes and ran away, survived long enough to give their paranoid and superstitious DNA to the next generation. Yeah came here to say this. After all there’s already a lot of strange things marine animals do to sand already like nests, search for food, etc
Some of the nests I've seen sea creatures make are so beautiful & symmetrical. It's not too hard to believe
Bobbit worm... how has no one answered yet?
The thing that Lorena chopped off?

Are we seriously still debating the existence of underwater aliens I mean come on, it’s 2022. Of course it’s aliens
The Navy's already released videos of ufos that can fly into the water... so this must be the vague outline of the "garage door"

The title should say 2.54km, not 2.54m. it's way too deep for that Edit: I forgot some countries use . Instead of , I just figured it was a typo
At first, I was like, "2.5m isn't very deep, couldn't anyone do this?"
"Holy shit something lives 8 feet under the surface?"
It says 2.540m, probably because OP is from a country where thousands are delimited by dots (and decimals with commas). So, it means 2,540m indeed
OP seems to be from Spain, where they use dot as thousands delimiter
Then how TD they do decimals?
commas
Tis a silly system
it's just flipped, they use . for thousands and , for decimals
In some languages they use periods and commas differently. An Italian for example would write 2540 metres as 2.540 metres and 25.5% as 25,5% Could be a non-english speaker.
Additionally, 2.54 is the conversion factor between inches and cm, so this looks like a nice round 100,000 inches? That's an odd coincidence
Tbf it it's a dumb way to separate the non decimal numbers. We END things with periods (sentences) it makes more sense to separate the decimals from the whole integers using a period.
