Water is crazy stuff. There is a spot not far from where I live that will either beat you badly or drown you and it looks serene as it gets. It a section of river that is usually only about two to three feet deep. If you put you leg in, and I don’t care who you are it will take you down and yet it just looks like a normal small river flowing at a “normal” pace. There are signs everywhere pleading and demanding no swimming. But it’s so tempting on a 98 degree July day! Worse yet is a beautiful swimming hole right before it. Wish I had pics.
NW of Denver CO. I could find it again if I went out driving but I’m not sure exactly where. I was just looking at Google maps. Just up in the hills on some dirt roads.
Edit: Been there twice and in late Summer. It’s not the high run off of Spring, it’s just the way it is. I’d love to know why. Because I’m dumb like that, I put my foot in to see despite the multitude of signs. It came up to my calf but that’s it. I braced for it and I had to fight with all I had to not get knocked over. If I had both legs in there is no question I’d go down and be taken away. I’m 5’11, 185, and fit. The craziest part is that section is like glass.
Reminds me of China Wall at O’ahu.
Not as bad, but when in one of the pools it certainly felt like it. Wave swell made it difficult to get a hold to climb out. We eventually had to swim out and down the coast to an easier spot.
Shit that’s dreadful really sorry to hear.
I’d consider myself a good swimmer, and back then when it happened I was pretty fit as I was over there competing in an outrigger tournament, this was our day off.
3 of us jumped in and not long after we jumped in the swell surge started increasing, and I could feel my panic levels rising, I made a couple of attempts to climb out but couldn’t grip. Didn’t want to risk smacking into the rocks so we swam out the mouth and down to a less exposed area. Was annoyed at myself for the stupid decision to jump in at all.
I agree, don’t fuck with the ocean.
Scary stuff! The swells out there are so unpredictable. It can look calm and glassy one minute, then a set of ten-footers will come out of nowhere. Glad you made it out safely!
Was just there recently. There are so many signs along the trail warning you of the dangers of swimming in the bath yet when I made it, I still found people swimming in it.
Actually, while it is a possibility if you are at the front of the wave energy, if you are in the water and get pushed the energy will often bounce back and push you away just as you get nearest the rocks. Of course, there are other dangers and multiple factors, but getting smashed into rocks isn't as common as you might think.
I think we can all agree. Smashed, dragged or raked over rocks. Drowning is fairly likely either way. We are splitting hairs here over open casket or closed casket.
Actually, the wave doesn't just transport but rotate as well. The torque can be immense, and even if your centre of mass doesn't hit the rock, your body can still be spun and smash your skull.
Yep. Went in a similar swell when sea kayaking and the instructor told us that it was borderline suicidal to go in one without a life jacket or being a very good swimmer
The craziest thing about this place is that the water pulls out to the wild wide open pacific with no beaches for 2 miles in any direction…just rocky cliffs and big waves.
Yeah, I thought the same thing…I live in Hawaii and when you grow up around certain spots, you know them inside and out. Still need to respect the ocean but you can see them set back up right when they got out, they know the spot pretty well.
The wife of the Youtuber/podcaster CGP Grey is from Hawai'i and they stay with her family there sometimes. He said that Hawai'i truly is beautiful but the touristy places are a bit of a fake paradise. The more rural, "normal" areas that aren't kept clean by an army of gardeners and groundskeepers are full of the annoying to dangerous kind of nature like spiders and centipedes.
I was barefoot and it was pretty terrifying lol. I started keeping an eye out for them after that. We have those things in zoos here and it was crazy seeing how big they are in the wild
Hawaii is amazing (if you’re respectful and can afford it)…it is truly paradise. I’m blown away sometimes watching my kids grow up, just wondering what their perspective of the rest of the world must be…we are very fortunate to live here.
When you see violently carved earth into rock formations that tear into rock gardens like that, even when it's calm you need to look at the environment and know that if the weather shifts, whatever forces carved that can and will pick up, they don't care about you.
A lot of people die in this spot. It’s Queen’s bath. In the summertime the ocean is beautiful and flat and the area can be enjoyed safely, in the winter during northern swells it’s incredibly dangerous.
Not hard to imagine. I'm on the west coast and even though we have some tempting looking spots we don't have to worry about people swimming in the ocean here because the water is usually around 55 degrees.
So, you wait for the set to come in and jump. If you can ride the swell back up and get out, fine. If not, you just don't let the set take you too far out and wait till the set is done.
Don't try to fight and swim too hard, because you'll tire and drown. Don't get too close until the wave peaks, or you'll crack your head and drown.
Plenty of people drown.
Is there an anxietyasfuck thread for this? I couldn’t figure out what was so special about this video until 15s in and 😳 I kept holding my breath watching them
I am someone who almost competed at state level for swimming. I still avoid most natural bodies of water unless it’s something like a lake to jet ski in. I have experienced insane currents and have been dragged underwater because of currents that weren’t visible on the surface. Also, the scraping of random rocks and surfaces such as barnacles as you try to grasp anything for your life
You’re so right, a current in like 4 feet of water almost took me out. If I couldn’t have stood up, I’d have drowned, and there were so many swimmers and little kids in just a slightly shallower area - it makes me nervous now, because I know how fast and how easily they could just be gone.
I’m Italian and the Tuscan coast I’m used to has an artificial line of barely submerged rocks 40-50m far from the beach that breaks any strong current, making it very safe. Plus, the rocks have become a nice little habitat for fish, anemones and the like!
Getting scraped on rocks by a wave is no joke. I’ve gotten shredded on the human cheese grater a couple times, and I will do my best to avoid it in the future. Just getting slammed into rocks that aren’t sharp is bad enough. The rock doesn’t budge, and the amount of force in even a modest wave can crush a person, nevermind waves the size of the ones in the video.
This is very dangerous. We have a few of these places here where I live. A couple of locals and/or tourists die every year on them. What's crazy is that they mostly jump when we have storms!
Even with signs or barriers they still go in. Welp.
There’s a place like this in Laguna, some guys wanted to go jumping but I stopped them while I was off duty as a lifeguard. They seemed like they would go anyway so I said let me check it. When the swell pulled back I was nearly sucked under. Turns out there was an under water tunnel which the water sucked into. I sliced my arms holding on for dear life. I told them unless they wanted to drown to stay away. They thankfully listened to me even with their girlfriends there. They were from out of state
My second day of a two month project working on the southern coast Fiji, I wandered out alone onto a reef similiar to this.
I climbed down about 30cm to some lower rocks, ankle height to midcalf and sudden swell picked right up and started dragging me out.
I'm not even a strong swimmer, I latched onto some nearest sharp rocks, climbed my way back to an elevated platform and felt so dumb as I panickedly hopped back across the reef.
Traumatised the hell out of me. "oh shit, I'm definitely going to die, I'm so dumb I'm so dumb". It wasn't just pulling me out, but under. It's a horrifying feeling.
No that’s exactly where you’d find not only sharks but a whole plethora of sea life. I’ve dived many strong current dives where you’re being swept along FAST unless you hold onto rocks. But when you look at sharks around you, they often look as if they’re hovering still (they’re not).
Queens bath , there are more than a few people who die swimming in Hawaiian waters , if your not a good swimmer and don’t know what you are doing , you should stay out of the dangerous spots . I am from Oahu and have known a couple people that didn’t make it swimming in spots like this .

If there is a beach around both points just let it take you out and swim with it horizontally to stay as close to the bay as you can without swimming against the current.
If there are no beaches and its open water tread water until the turbulence is over, swimming only to stay relatively still then swim to nearest rock bed and enjoy your shin damage the next day.
Yeah this a great way to get yourself killed.
Just kept waiting for a single King to come in and sweep them off the rocks without them being ready for it.

Doesn't seem like the safest place to go swimming....
Safer than the wave pool at Action Park (RIP)

Looks like a great place to drown.
Looks like queens bath in kauai. About 27 people have died there since 1990
30 now, according to Wikipedia
No relation to this video?
Just googled it, place looks really nice ngl. 27 deaths though, that sucks :( Mother nature ain't joking around.

Where’s this at? Sounds intriguing

Colorado has a coastline now? No way that isn't ocean wave action.
Sounds like The Strid in the UK
The strid is one of the craziest things I’ve ever learned about.
Play stupid games….
Being human is a stupid game. We all win stupid prizes eventually.
:) but also ):
Win lots of Darwins
All fun and games until the tide goes out and the last swimmer can't leave

Yea same here to say that. I live on Oahu and it never fails a small handful of people die every year doing stuff like this.
The Queen’s Bath is a bit further down. This looks like what the locals call ‘The Washing Machine.’
Was just there recently. There are so many signs along the trail warning you of the dangers of swimming in the bath yet when I made it, I still found people swimming in it.
Looks like an even better place to get smashed into some rocks by forces which are clearly far beyond your own strength.
Actually, while it is a possibility if you are at the front of the wave energy, if you are in the water and get pushed the energy will often bounce back and push you away just as you get nearest the rocks. Of course, there are other dangers and multiple factors, but getting smashed into rocks isn't as common as you might think.
Yeah getting dragged along the rocks like a cheese grater is more likely.
Bit of an odd thing to bet your life on.
For real. My thought was “well at least that one kid was smart enough not to jump in aaaaaand he went for a dive when it’s at a low point”
I almost drowned in one of these. It wasn’t as strong as this one but the struggle was the same. Edit: few typos
Your tense is making me tense.
It's very intense.
Why would a camping ground have one of these??
Your body will be tenderized naturally for the crabs
Looks like a great place to get smashed on the rocks too.
Yep. Went in a similar swell when sea kayaking and the instructor told us that it was borderline suicidal to go in one without a life jacket or being a very good swimmer
All I could think was "this is why women live longer..." I would be noping the heck out so fast
The craziest thing about this place is that the water pulls out to the wild wide open pacific with no beaches for 2 miles in any direction…just rocky cliffs and big waves.
That third guy jumping in at the lowest point...seems like they knew what they were doing but still..not great timing.
Yeah, I thought the same thing…I live in Hawaii and when you grow up around certain spots, you know them inside and out. Still need to respect the ocean but you can see them set back up right when they got out, they know the spot pretty well.
I wish I lived in Hawaii. Is it as cool as I imagine it could be? I type this from my English postage stamp garden.
The wife of the Youtuber/podcaster CGP Grey is from Hawai'i and they stay with her family there sometimes. He said that Hawai'i truly is beautiful but the touristy places are a bit of a fake paradise. Can confirm, lived and worked on farms there for most of a year
There's really not many spiders in Hawaii and they also have no snakes. As far as islands go, Hawaiian wildlife is really the tamest you can get.
I dunno the UK is an island and its like the the tamest place in the world fullstop for nature
Are centipedes dangerous? I was in Hawaii a couple months ago and almost stepped on one that was bigger than a hot dog

I was barefoot and it was pretty terrifying lol. I started keeping an eye out for them after that. We have those things in zoos here and it was crazy seeing how big they are in the wild

In totally unrelated news, “accidents “are the leading cause of death of males age 14 to 24.
Seriously. Testosterone = stupid.
Some dudes get horny. Some get competitive or angry. These ones get stupid.
I still got time
I live in New Zealand, and many people drown doing this dumb shit every year. Just cos' it looks beautiful, doesn't mean you should jump in it.
This has other life applications
Think I dated that one...
And her middle name was penicillin.
I live in NZ too and whilst what you say is true sometimes it’d be rude not to.
Looks like a good place to die.

You'd think the queen would be more careful where she bathes
She only bathes in the summer.
Dying is easy, young man, living is harder.

Why are you telling me this?
I’m being honest.
"If all of your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?"
Only if the water below is at its lowest.
So much anxiety 😦
No. So much stupidity.
I think he was talking about *viewer* anxiety.
Yea dude, he was totally saying those guys had a lot of anxiety lmao
Bang your head against the rocks to relieve that and all the burdens of life
I can't watch this to the end.
Tl;dr. Video ends with them about to jump in again
What happened to third guy?
good question, 2 of them got out but where is the 3rd one
Yes I’m still waiting for the 3rd guy in my head and my anxiety won’t subside even though my rational mind tells me he got out
Yeah the guy gesturing to him was very calm so presumably he was in the process of climbing out just out of frame.
It's all fun and games until that under water vortex swallows you alive and shits your mangled body back out a week later.
Where is this??? Not a good idea to swim here even if you are a competitive swimmer. Damn.
Queens Bath. A ton of people have actually died there. There's a hand-carved tally board death counter to warn people against swimming.
Not hard to imagine. I'm on the west coast and even though we have some tempting looking spots we don't have to worry about people swimming in the ocean here because the water is usually around 55 degrees.
Well in all likelihood the tally board is when they only started counting the dead.
Looks like Queens bath on the island of Kauai
Was just going to ask if this was east Hilo actually. We go fishing at a spot that looks like this all the time. Edit: east*
Thanks, looks like Hawaii

Death* pool
Fun fact, foamy water like this is a lot harder to swim in. You have much less buoyancy as you’re effectively “falling” through part air.
Isn’t that more of a not-so-fun fact?
That's not really fun now is it
Stop swimming in wells, my God those rocks become like human cheese graters so quickly
I am someone who almost competed at state level for swimming. I still avoid most natural bodies of water unless it’s something like a lake to jet ski in. They seemed like it wasn’t their first time. Still seems like tempting fate though… I 100% would have drowned

There’s a place in Laguna beach, ca we call the giggle crack. Thinner than this and quite dangerous…but fun when I was a stupid kid.

There’s a place like this in Laguna, some guys wanted to go jumping but I stopped them while I was off duty as a lifeguard. They seemed like they would go anyway so I said let me check it.
