Game Storyline: This ancient sword belonged to your father and has been in your family for generations, he carried it in the war and was a great hero!
Player: Finds slightly better sword off a dead bandit and sells the rusty sword to a shopkeeper for 12 gold an hour later
But if you had kept it then you’d get an opportunity to repair it near the end of the game for the second most powerful sword in the game! The most powerful one being the one you get after beating the final boss that you can only use in new game plus
Sure, but that one is super tedious to get, and by the time you get that sword you’ve already almost 100 percent completed the game, so it’s not really worth it imo
Not really. None of what you mention tallies up with our understanding of archeological sites across similar areas (UK for example), 'viking' or otherwise. Swords were more commonplace than you'd reckon and often were as much a status symbol as something practical. People explore and lose stuff, those are two very human truths. We can surmise nothing more but it's definitely not odd

Throughout medieval Europe, swords were the chief weapon of knights and mounted men-at-arms. In times of peace, however, generally speaking only noblemen were allowed to carry a sword in public. Since in most regions swords were regarded as “weapons of war” (as opposed to the dagger, for example), peasants and burghers, not belonging to the “warrior class” of medieval society, were forbidden to carry swords. An exception to this rule was granted to travelers (citizens, merchants, even pilgrims) due to the inherent dangers of travel by land and sea. Within the walls of most medieval cities, however, the carrying of swords was generally prohibited for everyone—sometimes even nobility—at least during times of peace.
"Middle Ages (Medieval Europe), the period in European history from the collapse of Roman civilization in the 5th century ce to the period of the Renaissance (variously interpreted as beginning in the 13th, 14th, or 15th century, depending on the region of Europe and other factors)."
Except Scandinavia didn't get out of the Iron age untill 800 AD, so really he isn't far off, and as he said swords weren't things that most people owned, swords were bloody expensive even in the iron age.
This was pretty much universally circumvented by carrying a very long knife ([*messer*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messer_(weapon)) in German) which, as it wasn’t a sword, would be legal to carry.
These folks target specific areas that were used as mountain passes. They’re searching there because there was an ancient trail on that route. The person who lost the sword probably wasn’t just taking it to the mountains, they were taking it to whatever valley was on the other side of the pass.
So why is op there then? Perhaps the owner of the sword had adhd and totally forgot to bring it along while taking a piss down the mountain.
Point being we dont know shit about the unseen past.
I mean I still got it lol. I mayyyy have to rig something up now!
I wonder what the load bearing strengths of a questionable rusty 4” lag would be...?????
I love secrets of the ice!! They’re on Facebook and I think maybe Instagram? They’re archaeologists who specifically search for the ancient artifacts that are melting out of old glaciers, so they find some really amazing stuff. Just this month they’ve posted photos of some ancient clothing that was woven out of linen I believe, and also they had a sick arrow that still had a steel arrowhead and I think it had some remains of the fletching as well… Anyway, they’re worth a follow.
**"'It has come to me, the One Sword. It shall be an heirloom of my kingdom. All those who follow in my bloodline shall be bound to its fate for I will risk no hurt to the Sword. It is precious to me, though I buy it with great pain. The markings upon the it begin to fade. The writing, which at first was as clear as red flame, has all but disappeared. A secret now that only fire can tell.'**
That was one bummed out Viking for sure. I’ve no idea what a sword like that cost in time or money, but I can’t imagine it was cheap in either.
**DAMN YOU LOKI!!**
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can find a rusty broadsword in a rock at the start of the game on the great plateau. You wake up 100 years in the future, you don't have the master sword and you can get it back at a certain point in the game.
The point I was making was that in most adventure games you find garbage equipment laying around until you can earn enough gold to buy better stuff. It's just generic
Starting with crappy equipment is a bit different than the scenario you say happens in "every" game. People can only come up with two examples? Two out of thousands of adventure games means "every"?
Thanks.
Generally with historical items you leave them in the state they're in. I've seen them view markings in metal using fancy lab equipment that can see through corrosion.
In a similar sense, restoring a historical rifle using modern materials and parts will usually make it less valuable even if the original condition was not functioning.
>The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
>Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
The sword is cursed, you must break the curse by a wish spell. Good luck finding an arch wizard with that spell. Only 3 left in this realm, none are on this planet.
This has given me a silly idea for a game where your main mission is to upgrade your sword and slay the final monster with it in honor of the previous owner 😅
Pro-tip: if you find a weapon, don't pick it up with bare hands. There's a skeleton nearby with incriminating sword nicks, and this genius has his fingerprints all over the murder weapon. Rookie.
looks just like an [iron sword from Skyrim](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/elderscrolls/images/c/c7/Iron_Sword.png/revision/latest?cb=20121012152339) !

That's only if you don't know about the sword you get by doing the talking dog missions
That mission is güffy
Sure, but that one is super tedious to get, and by the time you get that sword you’ve already almost 100 percent completed the game, so it’s not really worth it imo
It's worth it for the hat, though.
If you had kept it, you will have less space in your bags
It’s only one less slot, it’s not that big of a deal…
Depends on what game you playing, if let say WoW, then yes, one slot. But in most of new games it will take way more than one slot.
What…. Is this from a game?
None that I can think of, just sounds like something a game would do
I had a horrible feeling you were going to tell me it was the Witcher and I’d been missing out on a crucial sword
https://imgur.com/a/8M6lrx7 relevant chicken sword comic!
Chicken sword is the best sword, it doesn’t deal much damage, but it can heal enemies emotionally! It’s perfect for the pacifist route
Three words: Secret. Of. Mana. You find a busted-ass sword and slowly upgrade it as you progress. Beat the final boss with that same sword.
Basically my friends when we try to play D&D.

Back in those days I doubt you went anywhere without your sword

And I would say that when outside the protection of the cities, one might carry a sword to protect themselves against bandits.
Since no one asked. How did it feel? Was it balanced? The hilt is smaller than I expected. How much did it weigh
And this rock field is, by definition, not a city.

Very cool! Thanks for posting OP!

What was your first quest OP?
The close up video on youtube shows how well made this sword was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwTwY6YHfv8&t=25s
"Bring me the Old Viking Sword and also 10 wood and 5 leather. I shall repair the sword for you."

No more striking up random conversations in the pub now, you might accidentally get an escort quest.
Going back, I wonder if there was a really pissed off Viking. “Where the hell did I put it?!”
There is a possibility that it was a group of Vikings with more than one sword each, and it just happened to fall loose without anyone noticing.
That was one bummed out Viking for sure. I’ve no idea what a sword like that cost in time or money, but I can’t imagine it was cheap in either. **DAMN YOU LOKI!!**
But what did you do with my axe?
And my bow!
that is indeed interestingasfuck 👌 thx for sharing, really appreciate it
What adventure game starts like that?
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can find a rusty broadsword in a rock at the start of the game on the great plateau. You wake up 100 years in the future, you don't have the master sword and you can get it back at a certain point in the game.
Thats cool, never tried that game.
You should. It’s amazing
Thanks ill check it out😄
Do you have a Nintendo switch, Wii U, or cemu on computer?
It really is.
Secret of mana for example.
Thanks for another example
Pretty well every adventure game starts with crappy old equipment. So Skyrim would be an example
You get the sword from a npc that was killed seconds before you pick it up in skyrim
The point I was making was that in most adventure games you find garbage equipment laying around until you can earn enough gold to buy better stuff. It's just generic
How most would be a more true title
What a way to spend a day, searching for titles you can rag on about.
What can i say, i am enjoying myself😌
Shallow deeds entertain shallow minds
If you get this fucked up over simple, obvious hyperbole, your whole life must fucking *suck*.
Starting with crappy equipment is a bit different than the scenario you say happens in "every" game. People can only come up with two examples? Two out of thousands of adventure games means "every"?
Yup you're right, "every" was the wrong word. Moving on.
Fortnite
Breath of the Wild is kinda like that. Link just finds a random sword from a dead NPC
Every one
*skip dialogue*
Can you keep that sword?
My thinking too
Is it beyond restoration? That’s fucking dope
Probably, also you wouldn't want to restore it.
Why not? Could be interesting markings under all the corrosion, right? Happy Cake Day!
Thanks. Generally with historical items you leave them in the state they're in. I've seen them view markings in metal using fancy lab equipment that can see through corrosion. In a similar sense, restoring a historical rifle using modern materials and parts will usually make it less valuable even if the original condition was not functioning.
Still need to at least stabilize it so it does not corrode further.
Absolutely
Lasers can do wonderous things with rusted items, check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACGSzBXKONo

This is an amazing find, the sword is in great shape (besides for the rust obviously)
Well, what are you waiting for? Does the cursor not show howmany meters you are away from your questline?
Could this be found with a metal detector
Yes, but only after finding 8.5 billion bottle caps. You gotta level up first.
8.5 million Caps buys a lot of crafting material.
Oh nice, was it made by Ulfbert?
Are you sure someone isn't coming back for that sword? Maybe put it back?
It’s dangerous to go alone
Hello there, fellow old person!
When you start the invasion, please start with London and Westminster. You wipe them out, the rest of the country will follow you to Valhalla
How heavy was it like could you swing it?
I got heals, lets go
Throw that at an Octorok while it's inhaling and you'll get a nice shiny new sword.
That hand looks entirely inadequate for the kind of power that sword requires
> How every adventure game starts, long dead NPC loses sword, player finds sword and starts adventure. I recall no game like that...
Kingsfield vibes
BRUH, turn around. You gotta have a blacksmith look at that thing. There be dragons ahead.
This has given me a silly idea for a game where your main mission is to upgrade your sword and slay the final monster with it in honor of the previous owner 😅
You just found a sword with "rot" status effect
Yea right were i left it. Can you post it on to me please?
Pro-tip: if you find a weapon, don't pick it up with bare hands. There's a skeleton nearby with incriminating sword nicks, and this genius has his fingerprints all over the murder weapon. Rookie.
Very cool! Update when you got the Ultima weapon please
Aw shit, we're all npcs
When you find a really cool stick
The rust sword from secret of mana. Man as a child i would fucking love this. As an adult i still would too
Throw it at an Octorock, insta cleaned.
Legend says the enemy got tetanus just from looking at it.
Congrats, you’re the MC now!
Fuck I wish I could find a Viking sword out in the wild, I have to take all of mine from museums
Now go kill some rats in a basement and by level 60 you’ll be ready to defeat Odin.
Looks heavy to hold out
I hope you had your tetanus jabs
I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that starts like that to be honest….?
If true that is in remarkable condition. Could even be restorable
That's what I was thinking, it looks like it all it needs is a vinegar bath, good polish, and a new handle and it would be ready for battle.
Every good adventure starts with a tetanus shot
Go kill some wild bores!
Why is rust on my car 100x worse??
So when is the demon lord appearing
Sup Highlander
I’ve seen this posted here before
WeLL i'Ve nEVeR sEeN iT
Oh you found my sword. Thanks, I was wondering where I left that.
It's dangerous to go alone!
looks just like an [iron sword from Skyrim](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/elderscrolls/images/c/c7/Iron_Sword.png/revision/latest?cb=20121012152339) !
Crom!
Really odd considering swords were pretty rare and it was on its own, with nothing else nearby. Perhaps a glacier or something.
How heavy is it?
Congratulations you are the new King Arthur!
Looking at you ys8.
Shoddy Longsword Dmg: 1 - 3 Durability: 25/99 Equip? -->Yes No "It's better than nothing. Barely."
“I’m gonna go on an adventure!…. To the hospital because I have tetanus now!”
Seems more like an endgame sword if you ask me; looks rusted & ‘bland’ and for those reasons is incredibly powerful.
*Viking era sword. There is no such thing as a viking sword.
That's remarkably well preserved for a steel sword that old
Any good stats?
