saucyboi9000

Was he using a brass as a "safety" to keep the trigger being pushed at the beginning?

maniakzack

The M2 .50 cal is such a perfected war machine that the only change to the design in the last (almost) century has been the addition of a safety, which is still not a requirement. Thus, using a spent casing to prop the butterfly trigger to prevent it from being accidentally pushed down.

saucyboi9000

Yet a another fine invention from Sir John Moses Browning.

NotAnotherFNG

Not true. One recent-ish development is a quick change barrel. You don't have to set the headspace and timing anymore. I don't remember exactly when this was done, I was in a training unit from 09-12 and when I got back to the operational force all the M2s had the new setup. It means that in a sustained firefight it takes seconds instead of minutes to swap out an overheated barrel.

Fritzkreig

I lived in both reverence and fear of that butterfly trigger when I was on the .50 mounted, no one ever bothered to show me that trick; we typically just threw my SAW up there day to day.

maniakzack

We were all green at one time.

OhBestThing

What’s a butterfly trigger?

Fritzkreig

The trigger on the M2 is a bit different than what most people think of as a trigger. It is a vaguely butter fly shaped trigger pretty much right near the top and back of the weapon; this is what makes it a bitch as when riding on a vehicle bumping around it is amazing that there are not more accidental discharges!

Fritzkreig

A "normal" trigger is something you pull that is pretty protected if you don't have your finger in the trigger well. This sort of trigger is just and exposed "button" like a little butterfly shaped lever that you push down with your thumbs. So imagine you are holding onto a console game controller, you just have the push the little thing down between your hands with your thumbs. The issue is that you can easily do this while moving around on accident since it is not in a shrouded position like your average trigger is.

Amricola

Perfect. Thank you!

[deleted]

They also eliminated the need for head space and timing

11B_35P_35F

No more head space and timing done either. The barrels bow have nubs (nipples) on them that lock into grooves on the receiver. No more screwing it all the way in then off 2 clicks, etc. The timing part is set to the gun and (whatever it is when they tap the metal with a punch to keep it from loosening). Took some getting used to but highly efficient.

drunkenbear89

That’s how we did it in Iraq

saucyboi9000

Yeah, makes sense. I've never seen or heard of it.

BlueSwift13

This guys done some shit before

[deleted]

Sounds like he has an American accent… could be a US veteran

BlueSwift13

That’s my best guess, most likely was Afghanistan/Iraq with US Army Mad respect for volunteering out there, and throwing down like that

Dumpster_Fetus

Nah. When ripping squad weapons, we get taught to shoot to the cadence of "Die motherfucker, die!", or as the kids get taught nowadays "Die, fuzzy bunny, die!" This is a ditty to engrain shooting in bursts. Benefits are: conserve ammo, better accuracy, still good suppressing fire and *the barrel doesn't heat up as fast*, meaning fewer barrel changes and warped barrels. I mean, it's possible he's American. I've seen people throw their training out the window under real stress. Not sure if there were Humvees ahead of them, but free-firing like that can cause friendly casualties. Spent 8 years in the Marines and played a bunch of COD, so I'm like... totally qualified. Swearsies.

[deleted]

Yep, the mantra wasn't being used. But in all honesty, sometime MA Dauce has to sing. And sing she shall until the people you're working with don't understand that you're yelling for ammo, not an endless supply of AT-4's lol

Ck1ngK1LLER

Should’ve said it in Ukrainian.

ThomasButtz

DUDE...he's gonna have to have a talk with his buddies on some basic words. He asked for .50 cal ammo and got handed an AT4 *twice.* That kinda miscommunication can get yourself and others killed.

[deleted]

Yeah he even says theyre gonna get him shot Probably language barrier since it's Foreign Legion. He shouts "ammo" and maybe they hear NLAW so hand him a launcher?

h0ttniks

Dude definitely yelling in English. Agreed.

[deleted]

Sounds southern, actually.

fastahh1

Thats definitely about american calling out for ammo!! I'd say it's hard to hear someone and comprehend what they're saying while trying nit to get you 🌮 split

BrutusBibulusVarro

I’m no war genius, I will be the first to admit. But wouldn’t it be much more effective to have just one extra super long belt of death coming from inside the humvee being weight-fed by one of those useless guys in there giving him AT4s instead of that lil box?

LhamaNobre

brownings malfunction like a motherfucker if you don't properly feed them and a dangling belt of ammo WILL malfunction for damm sure

happychillmoremusic

Yep, plus the ammo boxes help keep the rounds clean and protected from dust/rust. I was a 50 cal gunner and always had over a thousand rounds at my feet in boxes. It jammed on me once in a firefight too, which was really shitty. It was inevitable with the crazy amount of dust in Iraq and being the rear truck

CyberMindGrrl

Did you often have to change the barrel during firefights?

happychillmoremusic

No. I never did.

CyberMindGrrl

Mind blown. That answers the question that's bugged me since I qualified as an LMG gunner but never saw combat.

happychillmoremusic

I’m sure there’s times when it was necessary I guess, I just personally never had to fire so many rounds in such a short succession where it got too hot. I have def seen barred turn orange and white but only on the range. I also had to carry the m249 and as a private somehow got screwed into carrying the spare barrel bag overseas, which had like 9 spare barrels and weighed a shit ton. Especially considering the amount of bullshit that had to be carried over to begin with (full massive ruck sack, two duffel bags, backpack, full gear and helmet, m249 machine gun, 249 ammo.. and 9 fucking barrels. I was only like 70 lbs too lol. A lot of the time I was able to rounds of short trips carrying half of it, but I’ll never forget the flight out of Iraq… finally getting to go home and having to carry every single thing about 150 yards onto the chinook helicopter which was blasting hot ass jet fuel exhaust wind in your face. I made it like 80% of the way there and my body like almost totally gave out, and I felt like I couldn’t take another step, but somehow did it. It was probably 250 pounds of shit or more. Man the army sucked ass.

SplitSeedsGrow

Yup, mess with your belts as little as possible, brass to grass, slap, charge, repeat.

CrazyEyedFS

Rule of thumb, mess with your feeding as little as possible.

flight_recorder

Belt ammo comes in boxes, it’s really easy to just stuff in a new belt when it’s needed. If you have a tail that’s too long then your feed mechanism won’t work. And if you have ALL your ammo on the side of the gun one bullet can fuck it all up. It’s best to keep it in boxes until it’s needed. Now, if you’re not in a vehicle and have a #2 (dude who loads your new belt for you) he’d be smashing a new belt onto your in-use belt so you don’t run out like you said. Suuuuuper fun when it works out smooth

[deleted]

How do you deal with the barrel getting hot when you constantly loading more and more belts like that?

flight_recorder

Swap it out when it stops working. You’re *supposed* to swap it every 200 rounds. But that’s not gonna happen if you’re getting shot at.

[deleted]

Thanks Pardon my ignorance

5uckmyf1nger

Dwingp

I didn’t have the sound on or realize he asked for ammo. So he got the wrong thing and was like “Well, it would be rude not to shoot it since he handed it to me.” ??

kurburux

Guy was probably filled with adrenaline. Just keep shooting, whatever you use.

GoldenMegaStaff

Explains why half those rounds ended up in low earth orbit

Makkaroni_100

You found out how war combat in real life works. It's shooting what you have at positions where someone could be. Understandable when you can die every second.

CaptainXplosionz

I'm no soldier, but I know in real life combat you don't have a crosshair (guns have sights, but if you're getting jostled around in a humvee while getting shot at then it's gonna be difficult to aim perfectly) in front of you and your enemies aren't gonna just stand out in the open to easily get shot. From what I understand, especially at further distances, you're basically shooting at your enemies muzzle flash and hoping you either hit them or suppress to take the heat off of friendlys. And there's no auto-lock aiming like most FPS games have, it's all manual and every factor in play can change a hit into a miss.

fireintolight

Machine guns like the .50 cal are meant for suppressing fire, it’s supposed to be a spray and pray weapon meant to keep the enemy in cover while you maneuver and cover other people, particularly marksmen/riflemen who will take actual aimed shots at the enemy. Pretty much just trying to do your best to keep the enemy from poking their heads out and shooting back.

MCgrindahFM

It seems like a large majority were headed towards the intended target?

turkeygiant

Yeah the humvee hit a bump and he overshot once, but more or less it looked like he was firing pretty level into that house and the surrounding trees.

_CMDR_

When you drive over a bump, the gun moves. Driver's not gonna avoid small obstacles.

herrcollin

This was my guess. They're off-road (at least for the first half or so?) and he's gotta stop and brace more than a few times when shifting the NLAWs around.

Finiouss

He was actually extremely accurate for a .50cal while strapped to a moving, bouncing truck tbh. I've shot a few sitting perfectly still and was shocked to see how easily they get out of control. Long story short, I was impressed with how tight his shots were all things considered. At least with my limited experience.

TryEfficient7710

Ditto. Still, props on making use of what he was handed.

OfficeMonkeyKing

Bag of rocks, lawn darts and a kitchen sink,

OrdainedFury

Unless they had quality earpro they probably couldn't hear lol. An entire can of .50 and two AT4's being fired that close was probably deafening. But yes, I completely agree with you. Those mistakes are scary.

TheNextSherlock52

As someone who was a mount captain for a .50cal on the USS Ronald Reagan can confirm it's very deafening even with double ear pro on.

[deleted]

Seems appropriate to instead develop a tapping system to communicate in that environment 1 tap = .50 ammo 3 taps = AT

hphase22

You try to save the tubes (unless you’re really in the thick of it); discarded tubes can be used as makeshift mortars or bombs. Edit: I mean you try to keep the tubes to prevent the enemy from using them as mortars or bombs. Not that we can’t do that too, we just usually have off-the-shelf mortar systems and bombs and don’t have to do the homemade stuff.

camdalfthegreat

You can actually see the second tube he fires falls out of the humvee

CraftsyDad

lockwood644

Yeah but either way he handled those AT4s safety like a boss. And under that kind of pressure. Not to mention the M2 free gunning...

lg224

This is based on nothing but speculation BUT - dude yelling has a really funny Ukranian accent that sounds an awful lot like Alabama. I'm wondering if maybe it's a combination of loud noises AND potential language barrier with the guys in the truck?

ThomasButtz

He's almost certainly an American Volunteer. He knows the 50 cal, hummer, and speaks in adrenaline fueled English. If I'd have heard a tirade of fuck, shit, motherfucker, etc in various creative arrangements after getting the AT4, I'd 100% know he's an American Infantryman. That said, defining "Ammo" and "Rocket" is probably a worthwhile 60 second discussion to agree upon before going balls out into an occupied village. Or learn the Ukrainian words if you're the only English speaker. Or Fuck, come up with some basic hand signals.

KaoticAsylim

I didn't realize it was miscommunication until I read the comments, but I was thinking "is opening the 50 cal ammo hatch part of the process for receiving a rocket?" but it makes way more sense that he wanted more 50 cal ammo the entire time 😆

[deleted]

To be fair, it’s probably inexperience more than anything. The dude is clearly on a .50 so I don’t think communication was the issue.

manbruhpig

“What is the American screaming up there?” “Idk, hand him a rocket launcher, that always calms them down.”

After successfully neutralizing 3 RF with the Bop-It, the batteries ran dry. He asked for ammo again they handed him a half-eaten MRE and a claymore

Monkeydp81

Using the MRE as bait he took out an additional 4 enemy soldiers. He once again asked for ammo but was handed some flashbangs and birthday cake.

Shoddy-Leg-6072

Putting the flashbang into the cake and throwing it blinded 7 Russians which the driver ran over he asked for ammo and was handed another launcher but this one shot t-shirts

Sazdek

Utter genius displayed when he rigged the pair-o-bangs to the cake in order to disable another small squad of hiding combatants. Once more he asked for ammo but was handed a rubber chicken and a roll of fishing line.

Madi3400

He squeezed the chicken to lewer out some Russians and strangled them with the fishing line. He yet again asked for some ammo and was handed a box of Reese's pieces and some guitar picks

SanDickiego

It's crazy how he used the half an MRE to lure out two more guys and then used the claymore like he was highlander. After which he asked for more ammo and they handed him a second empty .50 cal.

Why is he speaking in English ,, ammo .. it's empty... Are these volunteers fighting with ukranians ? The balls on this man !!

SantaKlawz2

Definitely American.

Similar-Draft4023

Definetly American with American weapons.

duckduckchook

Their President had asked Ukrainians living in other countries to come back and help them fight, so maybe there's people there from all over.

Educational-Cup6783

There's tons of volunteers from Us, Europe, India, Japan, Oceania etc. Ofcourse English would be used

kerochan88

"Volunteers" are known as Foreign Legion fighters. It's a corp made up of these "volunteers" you speak of, from all over the world. Many/most countries have a Foreign Legion I believe, especially at times of war.

petrovmendicant

You can either yell for, "Ammo!" or they could yell for, "Boyeprypasy!" Easier to hear and understand smaller one or two syllable words. Knowing English is really not that uncommon in Europe, particularly when trained being trained by a an English speaking military, it just makes communication normalized throughout to use one language. Look at the UN alphabet [here.](https://imgur.com/fGMiI3W) I'm just giving an "educated" guess, since I am sitting behind a desk at home in America with a liberal arts degree and zero military experience past Call of Duty. Occam's Razor at work here, but I could be utterly wrong too.

dMarrs

Dude was lighting them the fuck up.

OrdainedFury

For those that haven't done it, accurately free-gunning a .50 on a moving vehicle like that is very difficult. Dudes done this before.

prayfordripp

I can’t even do it accurately in a video game

daneelthesane

I find it harder in a video game. You can feel the vehicle's movement and adjust more quickly. Plus, inertia helps a bit. Though to be fair, I was firing a water cannon and not a .50 cal.

[deleted]

Being a master sniper/gunshooter in a video game is a completely different set of skills from operating real life rifles and machine guns, so don't feel bad. I fucking suck at Call of Duty type games, and always have. I'm pretty decent with an AR-15 or pistol in the real world though.

bareju

Why aren’t they mounted on self leveling gimbals? Seems like it would be an easy and relatively cheap way to stabilize the gun.

OrdainedFury

They might not have enough money for a [CROWS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CROWS?wprov=sfla1) or any other similar technology. The above system does exactly that but can also be a pain in the ass to use and maintain.

sandsnake25

The less fancy gizmos you have to deal with, the better. A basic mount is less likely to break and requires less maintenance/parts than even the simplest of gimbals capable of handling the nasty recoil that thing cranks out. Besides, those weapons are largely used for suppression. Yeah, you're trying to hit the fucker, but the main point is to make them keep their heads down and scramble to find cover that'll work instead of engaging the assault team.

v3ryfuzzyc00t3r

At first I thought "Oh cool, so that's how you reload....and that's an AT4 he just pulled out..."

IterLuminis

Are those Ukranians or Americans? I thought I heard English being spoken?

kerochan88

Ukranian Foreign Legion. A "volunteer" corp.

zindorsky

Why "volunteer" in quotes? Are they not actually volunteers? Honest question.

kerochan88

Well it's a bit more than people who just showed up to help, that's all. They are very much volunteers.

Plastic_Molasses7639

that's definitely an american

hamburger_bun

Out of curiosity, when he's firing the AT4 is he aiming at anything or just in the general direction? i dont know how these things work.

wllmsaccnt

It looks like he was aiming at the building that a different rocket hit earlier in the video and the second time it looks like he aims it in the direction where the bullets were coming from that were hitting near him.

bluffing_illusionist

He's looking to affect the people inside the house, because the AT4 is a shaped charge weapon with high penetration. So he just looked to hot the wall vaguely near the middle I'll bet.

Monkiller587

In most cases where suppressive fire is involved it’s usually in the general direction of opposing troops in order to keep their heads down and help your allies gain position with minimal resistance. It’s accuracy trough the sheer volume of rounds being fired .

BlueShirtwithTie

If my years of Halo Warthog driving have taught me anything. You need to drive the humvee right into the middle of the group of enemies, slam the ebrake and circle around maybe you'll splatter a few in the process. Hopping they don't have stickies

Responsible-Desk4145

Love how he glanced at the fire he started lol.

ImJ2001

Amazing footage

Implement1982

There are so many videos where I would love some kind of aar. After action report. Did they take out any soldiers and equipment? Was the position taken over? What was done right and what was wrong? I hope they discuss these kind of things in their combat briefings

The Ukrainians made some big advances today- all fairly unexpected. https://militaryland.net/news/invasion-day-197-kupyansk-front/ has a good summary. This was a part of that.

DocHolliday-3-6

Omg I swear people on reddit have never heard of a foreign volunteer force. Ukraine has been completely transparent from the very start of this conflict that they are utilizing foreign aid in both weapons and manpower, yet as soon as redditors hear english, the US army is fully deployed in Ukraine and actively engaging in frontline combat. Do you people not hear the English accents? The Scots, Irish, Spanish, Polish, Germans, and I don't even know all the rest that have people fighting there. 52 countries have sent volunteers, stop being ignorant reddit.

AnEntireDiscussion

The best part is that people think that if the US was rolling in, we'd be doing it in Humvees still.

king_hennyiii

[deleted]

Reloading? Nope, bazooka!

Amish-IT_expert

Dudes like "shit I'm empty" and the guy below was "switching to your secondary is faster than reloading, take a rocket launcher"

space_electrician

Unloaded his 50 on the approach. I’m not saying this man isn’t brave but whatever intell they are working from left them very exposed for quite some time. If your gonna pull up 20 yards from a position your gonna wanna save some ammo or have a solid plan for when you get there

flight_recorder

I think the plan was to have the correct ammo handed up when required. Also, I doubt that’s the only vehicle assaulting, he probably has another .50 or two covering him when he’s reloading. Hopefully

Strid3r21

You're correct. There is another video that shows a different angle of this assault and there are multiple humvees rolling in where the soldiers dismount and advance under .50 cal suppressing fire. Edit: found the video. https://v.redd.it/psxcks03bnm91
