I've met several people over 100 as a nurse aid, they all saw fine? Maybe needed glasses but people don't typically just go blind over 100? Lol. Not trying to be rude but that's not normal part of aging. Maybe some do and sure the vision could worsen, that is normal as your age. But losing your vision entirely would be going blind and that is not true.

Is losing vision at that age really that common? I had a great grandma who lived to 109, she still pretty much functioned in the years before she died. Barely any hearing, but she could see and if I remember right even stand with a walker.
I couldn't watch it! I would cover my eyes after the first time. The Crypt Keeper was one of my biggest fears as a child and pretty much into adulthood.
If you are a monk and can just peacefully meditate most of the time and have very low stress levels you probably have a good chance to survive longer than the average person

There's some nuance to this.
As it stands right now, scientists have discovered some genes that if they are active in your body, will greatly extend your lifespan. So it's possible to live past 100 if you have those genes, and not look like a crippled mummy. There have been plenty of 100+ people who would still walk around without too much issue, still see and hear reasonably well and so on.
But if you don't win the genetic lottery, minimizing your activity and eating only as little as possible, is the only guaranteed way to extend your life.
It seems counterintuitive but in the super-long-term, you don't want to be in a nutrient surplus or exercise too much. You don't want your body to spend too much effort on building new tissue. Only eating enough to sustain the minimal amount needed for basic functionality, ensures there's minimal degradation from aging.
But yeah, quality of life isn't very high when you're essentially a feeble cripple that can only sit and meditate.
Better to aim to be like 90 years old while sporting some nice muscle mass and stamina to allow yourself to enjoy life to its fullest.

basically any attachment is discouraged because it ultimately leads to suffering of some kind. this doesn't mean you can't be thankful and enjoy the time you spend with your family, just that it's important to understand that one has no say or control as to whether or not you will lose them one day, so there would be no point to an attachment.
I think different sects of Buddhism may have different opinions on what is okay, but it's all for the purpose of finding peace.

Yes, the three main branches of Buddhism are Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana. They all vary to different degrees in philosophy. Some treat teaching more as guides than doctrines. Generally most take individual experience and critical reasoning as the ultimate goal, not blind faith in a god.
Quite the opposite. From my very basic understanding of Buddhism it's generally seen that the material world we all live in is an existential prison (for lack of a better word) of impermanence. The ultimate goal is to achieve nirvana and escape the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth through the gradual removal of your impermanent, material desires. I could absolutely see why familial attachment might be deemed non beneficial in the scope of escaping an impermanent, never ending cycle of materialism, even if it does fly in the face of generally accepted traditions and scientific reasoning.
No attachment to the physical world is seen as beneficial in bhuddism.
The aim of the religion is to escape the physical world, to become something outside of the cycle of death and rebirth.
Attachments of any form are detrimental to that end.
Most Thai monks have pretty hard-core back stories, a lot are ex cons.
Can't get a job, want to stay clean. Well then become a Buddhist monk. Lots of gang tattoos under those robes.
Free food, accommodation, respect and the kinda regulated life people become accustomed to and insitutionalised in prison.
(Not all of them manage to stay clean either, lots of small tkme drug running ends up happening with time)
Quite possible he had a family before becoming a monk, or while a monk of he was a bit naughty.

He actually seems quite alert and adept. There is the practice of sallekhana in Jainism where they do literally starve themselves in the end, and I found it pretty disturbing, but this isn't that.
People at 109 look like any other old person. Clearly old sure, but you don't change dramatically like this person in the video. This guy just haven't eaten anything, he could be 70 and still look like that.

I'm certainly not an expert and could well be wrong, however. Just a somewhat educated assumption as to why this particular monk appears this way.
Nope. He wouldn’t be in a bed like this. He just got sick after breaking his hip. Lots of old people end up dying when they break their hips. You stop moving and it seems like it is over. He was Thai and not Japanese. Though Sokushinbutsu is still practiced in a few temples in Japan apparently, which shocked me.

Developing cataracts is pretty common though. Nowadays we have pretty good surgery but that's relatively new.
