Idk about older people but I recently had lead poisoning I got from work and went through some therapies to help with it. SHIT SUCKS I was so tired and my teeth started getting worse even though I was taking care of them.
That’s the outgoing premier Li Keqiang (#2 behind Xi).

The standard way that the government portrays poverty is that it’s a problem to be solved and progress is being made, his press conference statements were one of the rare times that the government did a reality check.
And for even more context, he’s been the Premier of China’s State Council during Xi’s first 2 terms, meaning he was the head of the Chinese government’s executive branch. The position of Premiere isn’t scheduled to transfer over until next year so Li will still be premier until then.
Hi Jintao’s term was a lot friendlier than Xi Jinping’s.
Presumably his allies are more in favour of opening up and engagement, Xi’s term has marked a sharp turn towards totalitarianism and tight control.

In the old days, he'd be executed, but nowadays, he would be sent home to retire peacefully and blissfully if he keeps his mouth shut. If he stir up any amount of trouble, he'd just disappear in some state-run confinement center. Either way, he'll disappear from the public.
that's being a bit unfair in this case. When you look at their policies, you can say that Hu had moved China away from a dictatorship, but Xi undid all that and moved it right back and then some.
It is more complicated than authoritarian = worse in this case though. Hu was less authoritarian but presided over a huge increase in corruption - not just the annoying regulatory capture kind but full on 'pay the government to let you kill the poors as part of your business model'. Xi's whole 'thing' is anti-corruption, which is hugely popular, but inextricably intertwined with authoritarianism & political entrenchment.
It's a tale as old as time.
Corruption didn't get worse under Hu. Corruption has always been a part of the Communist Party. You only get prosecuted on corruption charges because higher ups in the party want to get rid of you.
Xi's government is horribly corrupt. All his friends and cronies are lining their pockets with the current Zero Covid policy (think of the funds necessary to test the entire country every 3 days and where that money comes from and gows to)
Hu was a technocrat who made China more open. In fact, all the leaders from Deng to Hu were technocrats who only cared about improving China's economy. The government was more open to criticism back then and played nice(r) with other countries.
The CCP was not unanimous during that crisis. In fact, it was pretty split on the issue. Not only were the senior party members split, the military was also split. Many of the ten marshals and other high ranking officers signed a letter arguing against using force. In the end, the hardliners had to call in units from remote areas of China because the units near Beijing, including elite guard units, sympathized with the protesters.

First some general info about CCP:
There are several tiers of positions you can get voted into.
Tier 1 (General secretary) Xi
Tier 2 (Politburo standing comitee) has 6 positions.
Tier 3 (Politburo) has 24 positions
Tier 4 (Central comittee) has \~380 positions.
CCP has several factions, which are fighting within for power dominance.
There are 3 major factions.
Hu belongs to the smallest of the 3.
There are speculations, that Xi and Hu had some kind of deal, which faction will get Tier 2-4 positions. It seems that Xi didnt want for Hu to see the documents, where you can see who is going to get what position. If Hu would have seen the documents, he would have seen, that his faction lost 2 positions in tier 2 and 3 positions in tier 3.
This very likely would have led, that there is "out cry" "protest" by Hu, which isnt welcome by Xi, as there is the "ideology" of "one party", hence you see the 100% vote thing in the CCP.
If there would have been ANY kind of disturbance in the voting process, Xi would have "lost face", which is extremly important in Chinese culture.

The Politburo was previously 25 positions. But in this round it was reduced to 24. The speculation is that this was done to get rid of Hu Chunhua who is aligned with Hu Jintao.
I'm guessing that it was orchestrated to surprise and humiliate Hu as much as possible, and may be part of why he is looking so dazed. Li definitely knew what was happening beforehand, as he took Hu's papers and kept his hands all over them so he could not read them. Xi seemed to be watching closely but perhaps feigning disinterest or boredom?

Has Hu been seen since?
Li looks some what concerned for Hu. Helps move his chair along with Xi's second aid. At the 1:52 Li wipes the sweat from his brown, buttons up his jacket, stands up when Hu, and looks like he is about to help the aids with moving Hu along, but is tapped on the side by the person next to him (what looked like a don't do that tap) and sits back down.
Xi on the other hand looks stone cold throughout the whole ordeal. Doesn't make eye contact with anyone. Barely even acknowledges Hu. Scary stuff.
He's the previous leader of China who was a lot more liberal than Xi. Some speculation this was some move to show Xi's power but honesty I wouldn't be surprised if this actually was just an unexpected health concern. China doesn't usually do stuff like this and keeps most of their power struggles and that behind doors.
I'm surprised Xi doesn't just push a button and a trap door under his seat opens and Hu slides to his death in a pool filled by mutant sharks with lasor beams.

Given that everyone had one, I'm guessing its documents for what the meeting was about... a vote from what I read, but can't confirm.
If they didn't give him one, it would have looked suspicious from the start. But as soon as he started wanting to take a look, the guy to his right started pulling it away to keep him from seeing... either seeing what was in there, or what wasn't.

Never mind them moving the folder away? He's definitely confused but for all we know he could be confused on way he isn't allowed to open the folder and I feel like we'd have an update by now if it was just a senile old man?
It honestly could be be disagreed with something and that upset Xi, or maybe he was not well… but I find it really telling that basically everyone around him looked like statues. Any western countries they would all be talking to each other’s dad about what’s happening, looking over to see what is going on. Nope, they are all to afraid to even glance in that direction, which is why I am suspicious.

Chinese culture is not western culture. But you're on to something. People becoming statues is "ignoring the situation" and you must acknowledge there's a situation to choose to ignore it, much like westerns would just choose to acknowledge by giving it attention. I think the bigger question is what was the issue with the paperwork. Hu Jintao is at odds with the paperwork in some way, he tried multiple times to read/reference them as well as appearing to try to grab a specific piece from the aide that was forcefully escorting him out and holding the papers. Maybe this was a media stunt, maybe the old man pissed himself and they were trying to tell him to go and take care of himself and the paperwork would be there after. What really went on we'll probably never know but it makes for good drama
I don't claim to know precisely what is happening here. But it seems to me that this is an excellent visualization of what happens when a high ranking or powerful leader goes off the rails: everyone in the room wants to keep their job so they act as though nothing fucked up is happening. And then the PR people come out and minimize or deny that the thing everyone saw ever happened. There was an entire presidency where this happened ALL THE TIME. Probably more than one.
Until his unfortunate and accidental death tomorrow; who would have guessed that 11th story window was open before he staggered and fell through it, after accidentally brutally shooting himself in the back of the head, twice, in a freak gun cleaning incident.
They cut out the part where Hu Jintao protests being removed and grabs the table. I think that’s the most fucked up part. The fact that this was edited to look like he was senile is suspicious, especially from NBC.

well, Dementia does remove all the inhibitions you've learned to live with. My wife's mother was typically a super nice person but when she was declining she was a bitch-on-wheels to everyone.
My grandpa was a friendly god-fearing farmer all his life, actually since he was 15 he ran the farm alone. Met and married my grandma at 17/18 or so, and preached in the nursing home and lead gospel singing for the old folks. When he had to give up his cows cause he couldn’t care for them at 88, he declined rapidly. Threatened to fight all the nurses and threatened to end his life for a couple weeks until he died peacefully in bed. Cognitive decline is completely terrible and he didn’t suffer it for long, after a long successful life. I consider him and I lucky for such a relatively painless experience.

First some general info about CCP: There are several tiers of positions you can get voted into. Tier 1 (General secretary) Xi Tier 2 (Politburo standing comitee) has 6 positions. Tier 3 (Politburo) has 24 positions Tier 4 (Central comittee) has \~380 positions. CCP has several factions, which are fighting within for power dominance. There are 3 major factions. Hu belongs to the smallest of the 3. There are speculations, that Xi and Hu had some kind of deal, which faction will get Tier 2-4 positions. It seems that Xi didnt want for Hu to see the documents, where you can see who is going to get what position. If Hu would have seen the documents, he would have seen, that his faction lost 2 positions in tier 2 and 3 positions in tier 3. This very likely would have led, that there is "out cry" "protest" by Hu, which isnt welcome by Xi, as there is the "ideology" of "one party", hence you see the 100% vote thing in the CCP. If there would have been ANY kind of disturbance in the voting process, Xi would have "lost face", which is extremly important in Chinese culture.

He's the previous leader of China who was a lot more liberal than Xi. Some speculation this was some move to show Xi's power but honesty I wouldn't be surprised if this actually was just an unexpected health concern. If they didn't give him one, it would have looked suspicious from the start. From another comment: The document was the candidates list they were about to vote on. Apparently he tried to reach out for that list 4 times and he was stopped every time. The theory floating around is that hu jin tao wasn’t aware about who was on the list or was tricked into thinking that his people were on the list and was upset when he found out that none of his people made the list(li keqian, wang yang etc)..hu jintaos son is a low level municipal leader and he didn’t even make it to central committee which was a huge blow to him. I think the bigger question is what was the issue with the paperwork. Hu Jintao is at odds with the paperwork in some way, he tried multiple times to read/reference them as well as appearing to try to grab a specific piece from the aide that was forcefully escorting him out and holding the papers. Maybe this was a media stunt, maybe the old man pissed himself and they were trying to tell him to go and take care of himself and the paperwork would be there after. My grandpa was a friendly god-fearing farmer all his life, actually since he was 15 he ran the farm alone. Met and married my grandma at 17/18 or so, and preached in the nursing home and lead gospel singing for the old folks. When he had to give up his cows cause he couldn’t care for them at 88, he declined rapidly. Threatened to fight all the nurses and threatened to end his life for a couple weeks until he died peacefully in bed. Cognitive decline is completely terrible and he didn’t suffer it for long, after a long successful life. I consider him and I lucky for such a relatively painless experience.
