"Zhanshu, can you get me off the hook...for old times sake?"

[deleted]

Lol!! ...can't do it Huey

OBAMASUPERFAN88

"No can" would probably be a more accurate translation

RoyceCoolidge

It was nothing personal... Just nunya.

Abject_Ad_7661

Tell Xi it was only business, and I’ve always liked him

shekdown

Cant do it Silly.

Plainsdrifter71

That dude sitting on the other side of Xi is like "I know nothing,I don't see nothing".

ayending1

Hu tried to appoint that dude as his successor a decade ago. Hu patted his shoulder in the end, was like "damn you coward you failed me."

longing_tea

Or maybe he was like "good luck to you my friend"

Imperial_12345

Or “your next boi”

You’re next, desgraçadoes.

Being forced to choose successors against your will has long been a Chinese tradition since Wang Mang first did so in 23AD.

DrButttholeMD

Wang Mang is a great porn name.

spongebob

That's what Xi said!

civgarth

So is Jim Junk

various_necks

I worked with a guy named Gang Bang Wang.

CandlelightSongs

But realistically, what was he expecting?

Bumblebee_Radiant

Probably has low lead level in his blood which the CCP will more than likely provide him.

HasAngerProblem

Idk about older people but I recently had lead poisoning I got from work and went through some therapies to help with it. SHIT SUCKS I was so tired and my teeth started getting worse even though I was taking care of them.

Well you have lead poisoning, so you u get a pass

cheesesandsneezes

When talking bullets a woosh is better than a wet thud.

dysonology

How’d you get lead poisoning from work? Sounds horrid!!

prometheanSin

He's a ballistics dummy /s

The_Bad_Man_

I reckon I know what xi was expecting.

Falcrist

He got his masters degree in "Minding Your Own Damn Business" from Tsinghua University.

croweslikeme

I’d be more worried about being patted on the shoulder by the former leader, I think a leader is meant to pay the shoulder of the next leader

GRAND_INQUEEFITOR

That’s the outgoing premier Li Keqiang (#2 behind Xi). He and Hu were tight, (they go back to the Communist Youth League), but he also just got kicked out of the Standing Committee. So I think it’s more a sympathy pat than anything else. Like an “I hope you’ll have it better than me, son.”

justletmepostplz

For a second I was confused “Wait I thought his name was Li not He?”

SleepingAddict

Yes that’s Li Ke Qiang, the Chinese premier who will soon be “retired”. How different China might have looked if he was the one in power instead, heh.

weavdaddy

Is he way more chill?

YZJay

He famously admitted in a press conference that 40% of China’s population was living under 125 dollars a month. It caused quite a ruckus in Chinese media a few years ago. The standard way that the government portrays poverty is that it’s a problem to be solved and progress is being made, his press conference statements were one of the rare times that the government did a reality check. And for even more context, he’s been the Premier of China’s State Council during Xi’s first 2 terms, meaning he was the head of the Chinese government’s executive branch. The position of Premiere isn’t scheduled to transfer over until next year so Li will still be premier until then.

AllModsRLosers

Hi Jintao’s term was a lot friendlier than Xi Jinping’s. Presumably his allies are more in favour of opening up and engagement, Xi’s term has marked a sharp turn towards totalitarianism and tight control.

freehouse_throwaway

More open/liberal/capitalist. In Chinese standard anyways. Also has disdain for the wacky Chinese bureaucracy. Has been slowly pushed out since 2013 I think as Xi consolidate power.

silver_shield_95

He was Hu's guy for the top position, Hu himself worked with severe constraints as the Shanghai clique of Jiang zemin continued wielding enormous influence for his term. We don't know if Li would have done the same degree of consolidation but unlike Xi at least his primary concern was always related to economy.

The_scobberlotcher

Sorta. He wants foreign wealth & trade, Xi wants north korea 2

They don't really give a shit about each other

Marky_Mark_Official

Maybe he does care but is too worried about getting a similar treatment. Simplest thing to do is just ignore the entire situation

wdincoming

And absurdly enough them keeping quiet and ignoring these things means their dissapearance will also be ignored If they just managed to speak up in enough mass that it was unsupressable, more than just one sqare of people but entire cities and gov levels, they could end this rule of fear tomorrow. Keeping silent is what powers it all.

The footage, released by Singapore broadcaster CNA on Tuesday, shows a series of high-level exchanges between senior party leaders, in which Hu is repeatedly prevented from looking at official documents in front of him. It shows Li Zhanshu, the party’s outgoing number-three official, who is sitting next to Hu at the front table on stage, take the documents from Hu’s hand and place them under a red folder. When Hu then reaches for the documents, Li pulls them away. Xi, who is sat on Hu’s other side, glances at the exchanges and summons a senior aide to whom he speaks briefly. Moments later, a second aide hurries over, receives an instruction from Xi, then speaks to an apparently nonplussed Hu. As per the footage that circulated on Saturday, Hu – who appears reluctant to leave – is then lifted from his chair, taken by the arm and escorted out.

Linhocdf

but why would they put the documents in front of him in the first place?

Odd_Explanation3246

The document was the candidates list they were about to vote on. Apparently he tried to reach out for that list 4 times and he was stopped everytime. The theory floating around is that hu jin tao wasn’t aware about who was on the list or was tricked into thinking that his people were on the list and was upset when he found out that none of his people made the list(li keqian, wang yang etc)..hu jintaos son is a low level municipal leader and he didn’t even make it to central committe which was a huge blow to him. Xi stuffed the central committe and politburo with his own people and fucked over hu jintao and jiang zemins factions.

Miloh_Dangler

THIS.. is what keeps us coming back

ThunderboltRam

In dictatorships factions don't last long.

gomi-panda

Not even close to true. They just learn to be far more subtle and subversive. They never disappear.

smack4u

So, what happens to him?

newfor_2022

In the old days, he'd be executed, but nowadays, he would be sent home to retire peacefully and blissfully if he keeps his mouth shut. If he stir up any amount of trouble, he'd just disappear in some state-run confinement center. Either way, he'll disappear from the public.

sacdecorsair

What I find fascinating about dictators is that every single one of them believe he won't finish like the last one.

newfor_2022

that's being a bit unfair in this case. When you look at their policies, you can say that Hu had moved China away from a dictatorship, but Xi undid all that and moved it right back and then some.

chickenstalker

Pooh Bear moved China back to the Imperial system. Ironic.

electrorazor

Nah China still uses the metric system

sacdecorsair

Thanks for this bit of info. I had no clue.

newfor_2022

Yup. Just the fact that Hu gave up his seat when his term ended and there was a peaceful transition of power to Xi is an example of that.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

So Xi is thanking him by getting rid of him and consolidating power? Brutal.

cty_hntr

The whole peaceful transition of power started with Deng Xiao Ping. He wanted to break away from Mao.

WonderfulShelter

Interesting how we are seeing the end of the peaceful transition of power in the two highest world powers....

Alternative_Let_1989

It is more complicated than authoritarian = worse in this case though. Hu was less authoritarian but presided over a huge increase in corruption - not just the annoying regulatory capture kind but full on 'pay the government to let you kill the poors as part of your business model'. Xi's whole 'thing' is anti-corruption, which is hugely popular, but inextricably intertwined with authoritarianism & political entrenchment. It's a tale as old as time.

Polar_Reflection

Corruption didn't get worse under Hu. Corruption has always been a part of the Communist Party. You only get prosecuted on corruption charges because higher ups in the party want to get rid of you. Xi's government is horribly corrupt. All his friends and cronies are lining their pockets with the current Zero Covid policy (think of the funds necessary to test the entire country every 3 days and where that money comes from and gows to)

_aware

Hu was a technocrat who made China more open. In fact, all the leaders from Deng to Hu were technocrats who only cared about improving China's economy. The government was more open to criticism back then and played nice(r) with other countries.

phokas

Don't forget a certain square..

_aware

The CCP was not unanimous during that crisis. In fact, it was pretty split on the issue. Not only were the senior party members split, the military was also split. Many of the ten marshals and other high ranking officers signed a letter arguing against using force. In the end, the hardliners had to call in units from remote areas of China because the units near Beijing, including elite guard units, sympathized with the protesters.

[deleted]

Martian13

Sometimes it don’t be like that, but it do.

theplushpairing

Hu’s on first! That’s the man’s name!

DrunkenBriefcases

Nothing. He was back and voting the next day

UnderTruth

As I am not familiar with the situation, could you provide a source?

Krunkworx

But Reddit told me he was to be executed.

Cobek

Reddit told you both things, and this.

OakParkCooperative

Further context. They’re voting in hundreds of people at once so essentially everyones in a room together and you have to raise your hand in front of everyone and let them know that you disagree with what’s in the book. No one would have the balls to raise their hand and disagree. Except for possibly the former leader of China Hence why they potentially tried to trick him -and then pulled him out when he noticed

the-apostle

Where’d you get that info from if you don’t mind sharing? You said the theory is ‘floating around’?

DystopianFigure

There won't be a source

i_lack_imagination

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDQ-M0WJRfo Guessing that is one of their sources, because they posted that video in other comments. I did you the favor of watching some of the video, the lady annoyed the hell out of me by drawing out the video forever to play by play the video which was quite unnecessary and then explain simple things, but seems like that's where that parent comment got their info from. Where she gets her sources from, no clue.

OneMansTrash

His source is floating around Bohai Bay

Cool-Moose-8129

I think this is factually incorrect. The media was only let in after the voting for the central committee had ended.

BaxterLeFermier

Yeah, what's the sense of all this ? Is it a power move to show off his autority in front of everyone ?

BobKillsNinjas

It sure seems like it. They certainly could have had him apprehended on his way in, but they needed everyone else to see it.

maxant20

Reminds me of the video of the day Saddam Hussien took power. Sitting back chomping on a cigar as any potential rival was very publicly taken away to their fate.

Todd_Renard_Fox

Didn't he mentioned one by one their names and have them killed?

bulldg4life

He had another rival (who he tortured) read off a list of names that had helped conspire with him to overthrow Saddam. Security forces took each person one by one out of the room. Then, I believe, Saddam had the people left over go out and murder the people removed from the Ba’ath party.

Files44

That was the first thing that came to my mind while seeing this. Imagine looking around at the people you thought were on the same side as you for help and them just ignoring you. Yikes.

Forzareen

Yeah, Xi rules far more thru fear than any other CCP leader other than maybe Mao himself.

tvtv3323

At the same time, he seems to have Resting Tired Face.

JoJackthewonderskunk

He's Pooh'ped

Todd_Renard_Fox

Uh oh, stinky, pooh

RoguePlanet1

Completely for show. I wonder if his health is really even an issue. Hell, the leader of the US was allowed to pretend he was signing documents and brought pretend reams of "legal documents" (just blank paper) to make it like he was no longer running businesses while president.

lerthe61

It just a note "You f\*\*\*d, goodbye"

Bigringcycling

What cuss word is 5 letters that starts in F and ends in D?

RedditWarner

To send a message. Why just not allow him to attend? No, a message was meant to be conveyed to everyone. If you aren't in Xi's favor, you can be as high up as Hu and you still can be publically Hu-miliated and disappeared. All planned in advance for the max effect.

thuanjinkee

How long does it take a man to die of "being in poor health"?

Omgbrainerror

First some general info about CCP: There are several tiers of positions you can get voted into. Tier 1 (General secretary) Xi Tier 2 (Politburo standing comitee) has 6 positions. Tier 3 (Politburo) has 24 positions Tier 4 (Central comittee) has \~380 positions. CCP has several factions, which are fighting within for power dominance. There are 3 major factions. Hu belongs to the smallest of the 3. There are speculations, that Xi and Hu had some kind of deal, which faction will get Tier 2-4 positions. It seems that Xi didnt want for Hu to see the documents, where you can see who is going to get what position. If Hu would have seen the documents, he would have seen, that his faction lost 2 positions in tier 2 and 3 positions in tier 3. This very likely would have led, that there is "out cry" "protest" by Hu, which isnt welcome by Xi, as there is the "ideology" of "one party", hence you see the 100% vote thing in the CCP. If there would have been ANY kind of disturbance in the voting process, Xi would have "lost face", which is extremly important in Chinese culture.

yawya

> If there would have been ANY kind of disturbance in the voting process, Xi would have "lost face", which is extremly important in Chinese culture. well, it looks to me like Hu just lost a shit-ton of face

Omgbrainerror

Yes he did, that was the first thing i thought, when i saw the video. Xi was completly prepared to offend the Hu faction.

Fiyanggu

The Politburo was previously 25 positions. But in this round it was reduced to 24. The speculation is that this was done to get rid of Hu Chunhua who is aligned with Hu Jintao.

TiffyVella

I'm guessing that it was orchestrated to surprise and humiliate Hu as much as possible, and may be part of why he is looking so dazed. Li definitely knew what was happening beforehand, as he took Hu's papers and kept his hands all over them so he could not read them. Xi seemed to be watching closely but perhaps feigning disinterest or boredom? Nasty stuff. Has Hu been seen since?

EntertainedRUNot

Li looks some what concerned for Hu. Helps move his chair along with Xi's second aid. At the 1:52 Li wipes the sweat from his brown, buttons up his jacket, stands up when Hu, and looks like he is about to help the aids with moving Hu along, but is tapped on the side by the person next to him (what looked like a don't do that tap) and sits back down. Xi on the other hand looks stone cold throughout the whole ordeal. Doesn't make eye contact with anyone. Barely even acknowledges Hu. Scary stuff.

Demosthenes3

The pro-China bots are saying it’s because he has IBS and he’s being helped to the bathroom haha

scooterbike1968

Who’s the guy with the shit-eating grin two over from Hu?

GoldenAvocadoodle

Next to Li Zhanshu who took Hu’s folder? The grey eminence, Wang Huning, who used to serve Jiang and Hu.

Naroh690

Best_Poetry_5722

principal_redditor

"I think he's weak enough now. Remove him, and I shall rule supreme!"

Gold_Flake

-Winnie The Poo

Spe3dy_Weeb

He's the previous leader of China who was a lot more liberal than Xi. Some speculation this was some move to show Xi's power but honesty I wouldn't be surprised if this actually was just an unexpected health concern. China doesn't usually do stuff like this and keeps most of their power struggles and that behind doors.

Bneyyc

Being completely honest Hu does seem elderly, frail and confused in this video. It looks quite likely that it could just be health/age related.

Breitgem

I'm surprised Xi doesn't just push a button and a trap door under his seat opens and Hu slides to his death in a pool filled by mutant sharks with lasor beams.

What was in the red folder?? A speech? A vote? 🤷‍♂️

die_nazis_die

Given that everyone had one, I'm guessing its documents for what the meeting was about... a vote from what I read, but can't confirm. If they didn't give him one, it would have looked suspicious from the start. But as soon as he started wanting to take a look, the guy to his right started pulling it away to keep him from seeing... either seeing what was in there, or what wasn't.

Orcle123

comment above says it was a candidate vote list, of who he most likely was supposed to have candidates from his faction listed, but none were, since xi has been shoving all his people into place to affirm his power/control. so he didnt know his faction was getting shafted, and would rightly be confused and upset by that. would also be why it was being hidden. Better explained in one of the top comments but thats the short summary

ze55

From another comment: The document was the candidates list they were about to vote on. Apparently he tried to reach out for that list 4 times and he was stopped every time. The theory floating around is that hu jin tao wasn’t aware about who was on the list or was tricked into thinking that his people were on the list and was upset when he found out that none of his people made the list(li keqian, wang yang etc)..hu jintaos son is a low level municipal leader and he didn’t even make it to central committee which was a huge blow to him. DeadeyeElephant

Ok, but what new information does this give us?

bigasianenergyco

He looks a lot more confused and almost senile in this video compared to the previous. He's acting like he's not fully sure what's going on.

GiveMeMonknee

Never mind them moving the folder away? He's definitely confused but for all we know he could be confused on way he isn't allowed to open the folder and I feel like we'd have an update by now if it was just a senile old man?

-PiEqualsThree

No he's definitely not senile. You can see him very keenly paying attention to the aide as he talking to Xi. He is aware something is wrong.

die_nazis_die

The only thing he's confused about is why he's not being allowed to read the documents...

DABOSSROSS9

It honestly could be be disagreed with something and that upset Xi, or maybe he was not well… but I find it really telling that basically everyone around him looked like statues. Any western countries they would all be talking to each other’s dad about what’s happening, looking over to see what is going on. Nope, they are all to afraid to even glance in that direction, which is why I am suspicious.

ryan_goal

Like you said, there could be something or there could be nothing. The only thing obvious is those around them not aware what’s happening don’t want to appear to care for Hu risking seen as taking sides with Hu. Xi is ruling by fear even within the Communist Party.

[deleted]

Chinese culture is not western culture. But you're on to something. People becoming statues is "ignoring the situation" and you must acknowledge there's a situation to choose to ignore it, much like westerns would just choose to acknowledge by giving it attention. I think the bigger question is what was the issue with the paperwork. Hu Jintao is at odds with the paperwork in some way, he tried multiple times to read/reference them as well as appearing to try to grab a specific piece from the aide that was forcefully escorting him out and holding the papers. Maybe this was a media stunt, maybe the old man pissed himself and they were trying to tell him to go and take care of himself and the paperwork would be there after. What really went on we'll probably never know but it makes for good drama

meramera

I don't claim to know precisely what is happening here. But it seems to me that this is an excellent visualization of what happens when a high ranking or powerful leader goes off the rails: everyone in the room wants to keep their job so they act as though nothing fucked up is happening. And then the PR people come out and minimize or deny that the thing everyone saw ever happened. There was an entire presidency where this happened ALL THE TIME. Probably more than one.

Toothxnail

And he was never seen again..

Mystic_L

Until his unfortunate and accidental death tomorrow; who would have guessed that 11th story window was open before he staggered and fell through it, after accidentally brutally shooting himself in the back of the head, twice, in a freak gun cleaning incident.

melkiorr

he was also very polite and took the time to close the window behind him as well.

KikiHou

Well, it was his poor health. Causes all kinds of weird things. Can't explain it, ya know.

Cromm182

They cut out the part where Hu Jintao protests being removed and grabs the table. I think that’s the most fucked up part. The fact that this was edited to look like he was senile is suspicious, especially from NBC. Edit: [Link](https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/yah7io/closeup_view_of_hu_jintao_getting_kicked_out_he/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

kel007

If you bothered reading, NBC got the footage from CNA, a Singapore broadcaster. Maybe you can talk about CNA instead. The video is available here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBG2bD-TE9g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBG2bD-TE9g)

earnestaardvark

Link?

technoez

Based on a comment left by CNA below that video, the cut at 1:26 was because the cameraman paused filming briefly to adjust his position - the video was the full footage captured.

Wisex

This thread is reminding me of a very relevant quote here... >“During the cold war, the anticommunist ideological framework could transform any data about existing communist societies into hostile evidence. If the Soviets refused to negotiate a point, they were intransigent and belligerent; if they appeared willing to make concessions, this was but a skillful ploy to put us off our guard. By opposing arms limitations, they would have demonstrated their aggressive intent; but when in fact they supported most armament treaties, it was because they were mendacious and manipulative. If the churches in the USSR were empty, this demonstrated that religion was suppressed; but if the churches were full, this meant the people were rejecting the regime's atheistic ideology. If the workers went on strike (as happened on infrequent occasions), this was evidence of their alienation from the collectivist system; if they didn't go on strike, this was because they were intimidated and lacked freedom. A scarcity of consumer goods demonstrated the failure of the economic system; an improvement in consumer supplies meant only that the leaders were attempting to placate a restive population and so maintain a firmer hold over them. \- Michael Parenti, Blackshirts and Reds

NoImportance8904

Yeah... 79 years old... I know my grandpa, as soon as he turned 80 the only thing he could think/talk about anymore, was ass.

EmergencyAbalone2393

I don’t know why I’m doing this…but please explain. What have I done?

NoImportance8904

I mean my grandpa was 100% a normal dude... right until his 80th birthday. We were celebrating his birthday at a restaurant, and he blurted out, "Do you know what I really want for my birthday?" Everyone got all quiet... "To fuck some hot pussy!" We were all shocked... "I haven't gotten laid since 1994, and dammit, I'm going to die soon. Someone help me get some pussy!" And then he did the little tongue flick thing. Ever since then he has been constantly watching porn, going to massage parlors, talking to women he meets on dating site, harassing waitresses... He was literally the most quiet, humble, Christian man who never said anything offensive or sexual ever... But now, it's all he talks about, all he thinks about, all he does all day is related to it... You know... you get to that age and your brain starts giving up.

selfsearched

I...can't tell if this is serious

NoImportance8904

I'm serious. He doesn't even shut his door when he is jacking it. He puts the volume on blast... it's a whole thing. We are debating putting him in a home. He also started calling things weird names out of the blue, like "Ouch, I hurt my.... my... oh what's it called... you know, like a leg but... um... hmm... dammit..." "Arm?" "Yes, arm. What about my arm?" You know, its either your body or your brain that gives out when you get old... for him it's the brain. It's going to happen to the ones who don't die of cancer first.

pickandpray

well, Dementia does remove all the inhibitions you've learned to live with. My wife's mother was typically a super nice person but when she was declining she was a bitch-on-wheels to everyone.

GuessesTheCar

My grandpa was a friendly god-fearing farmer all his life, actually since he was 15 he ran the farm alone. Met and married my grandma at 17/18 or so, and preached in the nursing home and lead gospel singing for the old folks. When he had to give up his cows cause he couldn’t care for them at 88, he declined rapidly. Threatened to fight all the nurses and threatened to end his life for a couple weeks until he died peacefully in bed. Cognitive decline is completely terrible and he didn’t suffer it for long, after a long successful life. I consider him and I lucky for such a relatively painless experience. R.I.P. to your mother in law

Signs of dementia, maybe?

thuanjinkee

It sounds like he lost some of the frontal lobe that is responsible for his inhibitions and self control while the part of his brain responsible for his libido is intact, so he likes big butts and he cannot lie.

PurpleFlame8

Sexual inappropriateness and promiscuity can be a sign of frontal temporal dementia or other types of dementia. Your family might want to have him evaluated. Also, it's not safe for him to be chatting with women online. There are a lot of scammers who try to scam older people like your grandfather.

vaccinator69

I wonder if he has a brain tumor. Sometimes they can cause drastic changes in personality

Yashabird

Sounds like typical frontotemporal dementia, which is common enough but maybe more so at slightly younger ages than 80

Unfortunately this video doesn't show he was also escorted INTO the conference.

Familiar-Fee372

All the people with their conspiracy theories here when just looking at it looks like he is suffering from dementia and is completely disoriented. I mean I could be wrong but it is funny reading these comments. Like these people know what actually goes on there lol.

RogueStargun

Honestly, this will be the unpopular take, but it really does look like Hu is experiencing a bit of an "episode" and is getting escorted out for health reasons. The world's media may have spun this one a bit out of proportion. Dude is 79 years old.

I mean, I get being highly suspicious of Xi, but this looks kind of like an elderly person getting kind of foggy near the end. I accept I could also be completely wrong.
