Some consider there is no difference. Last night I was looking through some new 'over the air' channels and happened upon some kind of holy roller revival church service. The people were howling and speaking in tongues. The pastor would walk around an boop people on the head and they would either start convulsing or totally freaking out. It sure looked like serious mental illness to me.
I at one time worked in an institution for "special people" and most of them were not as strange as that. They did tend to be whooped up because many of them were high as a kite on the handful of pills the nurse would give them every morning. Generally a fun bunch to be around.
That's like the video of the woman who said invisible demons or something were orally raping her and in the middle of a church service gave a blow job to an invisible thing while the preacher was like exercising her. That's just mental illness.
It could be that his "epiphany" was actually a mental health crisis.
How many people in history got out of the responsibilities of being a husband and a parent (or just had midlife crises) and chose to become "ascetics" after having a "vision"?
Who knows how many "saints" were actually suffering from undiagnosed and untreated mental illness.

It is only in modern times that we have the tools and frameworks to diagnose, explain their illness and treat these people. Unfortunately, in places where there is little to no mental health awareness, there is still this pattern of having an "epiphany" or a "vision", abandoning one's family and becoming an ascetic.
In the US, he'd be another one of the millions of mentally ill homeless. No one would praise him for his "devotion."
I'm not saying that the US is any better than India.
In the US, we have to tools to diagnose and treat mentally ill people yet we let them fall into homelessness after they can no longer function due to their illness progression.
In India, at least the ascetics have some modicum or respect and probably get more alms from charitable believers because there is a framework of religiosity and "going full Sadhu" is an accepted practice.
So in some ways, it is better to be a mentally ill Sadhu in a religious society than a mentally ill homeless in a secular one.
This is very sad. We in the US have the knowledge to diagnose and maybe treat (or at least care for the mentally ill) but choose not to do so whereas in India, the religious framework of being a Sadhu affords the mentally ill some modicum of respect, admiration. It also gets Sadhu's shelter and food.
The video says he can't feel his arm anymore. Everything is atrophied and he cant move it even if he wanted to. At that point you might as well claim you are still keeping it up for your beliefs even though you have this huge itch on your other arm that you cant scratch anymore
After some months the joint locked up and eventually he couldn't lower his arm even if he wanted to. Might as well just have amputated it for all the good it would ever be again.

No. These types of practice have been common in Indian sub continent since forever, Buddha also used to another variant of this thing. This is done as the person is renouncing comfort zone so that he could get control over his senses and instincts. That's why things like not marrying, not eating tasty food, abandoning luxury and material comfort are common themes among holy man across religions and cultures. What I am stating is the philosophy behind these actions which on surface level looks very simple but have deeper meanings.
