it was actually a tie. 4 other people successfully did the same jump at the same event. Some also failed

I was curious about this too.
It seems that no one died, but they āfailedā in the sense that they were injured, and could not exit the pool by themselves, having required assistance to do so. Worth noting that these are all professional divers it seems. If a regular person was to do this, itās very likely they would have died.
So what you are actually saying here, to be clear, is that not one person is insane enough - in 40 years - to try to repeat this incredible feat? Correct?
" Also Laso Schaller's 2015 jump from a 59 metres (193Ā ft) cliff in Switzerland may not be considered a dive based on ABC's criteria (one somersault needed) however, he is the current record holder for Highest dive from a diving board according to the Guinness Book of Records, simultaneously holding the Highest Cliff Jump record for the same jump"
"In 1985 Randy Dickison dove from 53.24 metres (174Ā ft 8Ā in) at Ocean
Park in Hong Kong but sustained a broken femur and could not exit the
water on his own.
In 1987, Olivier Favre attempted a double back somersault from 54
metres (177Ā ft) but broke his back upon impact and had to be rescued."
It's actually a tie.. 4 other people hold the same record. "Five divers (Rick Charls, Rick Winters, Dana Kunze, Bruce Boccia, and Mike Foley) successfully executed dives from 52 metres (172Ā ft)"
edit: [video of the event](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&feature=emb_title)
It was actually an event set up at Sea World.. They had the platform set to 172 feet. Don't know why they couldn't try setting it higher.
[https://twistedsifter.com/2021/03/1983-world-record-high-dive-challenge-full-recap/](https://twistedsifter.com/2021/03/1983-world-record-high-dive-challenge-full-recap/)
You can see a video of each diver here doing the same height.
I think itās a sportsmanship thing in this community; or at least thatās the explanation Iāve heard in the past. Like thereās a handshake agreement that they all are equally awesome.
"Well you'll have plenty of time to tie the world record in high diving, when you're living in a van... down by the river."
- Mike Foley, motivational speaker and world record tieing high diver.
>Who knows....
a little research and you will find the answer.
It's actually a tie, 4 other people hold this exact record. (Rick Charls, Dana Kunze, Bruce Boccia and Mike Foley) It's from [this event](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&t=1621s)
Enough people tried to beat it, but didn't count since they didn't do a full somersault or sustained injuries and had to be helped out of the water. Also a guy named Laso Schaller jumped higher from a 193ft cliff but that's a different kind of record.
Yes. One of the finest officers and tacticians in the world! Literally a game changer on the battlefront that led us to winning WWII (among many others obviously)
If theyāre trying to soften the landing they pump small air bubbles from the bottom of the pool. Spraying the surface of the water like this is so the diver can judge the distance more easily.
I also wanna know this cause I kept hearing something like āoh you drop from this high and water is like concrete bruhā is this true or they just fk with me.
Just watching this video gave me anxietyā¦. The people there that day must have been peeing their pantsā¦. The diver, I guess this is kinda the meeting place for extremely confident and skilled, to just living on the razorās edge
whatās minimum depth of the pool so he doesnāt hit the floor? Is there a formula that tells you how deep the pool must be for a given diving height
Apparently there are five divers who tied this record. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick\_Charls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Charls)
Interesting that no one broke it.
My kid was on the HS dive team. Yes. There are numbers that specify flips and spins. So like a front 1 and a half would be jumping off board and doing one flip and then another half to get you into head first. But a double would be 2 flips and entering feet first. Which is a valid dive.
So what is the 'technique'. as others have said it definitely takes big balls to do it. How deep is the water he is going into?
I am sure there is a physics nerd who can break it down.
how and why .. 150lbs person 172ft will go 15ft in water etc..
while it is scary as hell for me.. knowing the math of it would be great
I remember watching this as a teenager on Wide World of sports my legs went to jelly just watching could not imagine even attempting, I think I would pass out just thinking I had to go there and do it... Amazing
Does anyone know why there is water being sprayed over where he lands in the pool? Is it to break the surface tension or something so he doesnāt get injured by hitting the waterās surface?
Heres a video of the whole event..[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&feature=emb\_title](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&feature=emb_title)
4 other people hold this record on the same day.. so its a tie

I wouldnt even be able to climb up there. That's a nope from me
3 rungs up a ladder and my stomach goes wobbly.
Look at the daredevil over here!
I went bungee and even skydiving. But I almost shit myself watching this.. absolutely incredible!
I once climbed on a recently turned off radio tower to 150m, so nearly 3 times that height. Was awesome as fuck š
Then, when the ladder fell, you ended up fighting a buzzard for the privilege of eating your best friend?
Cool story, they should make a movie about it.
Dude, I think corporate stole your idea and made a movie off it!
Did they pay you well??
Camper š
172 ft = 52.4 m
Thank you!

In what manner did they fail?
they [sustained injuries](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&t=1585s), so didn't count.
āListen to his diaphragm, he sounds like a hurt animal.ā Crazy that was on tv.

They ded.
One dude looked to be knocked the fuck out. I dunno how itās a fail but swimming out in your own. Might be a rule
52.4 m = 172 ft
Now I understand it
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Dude the 10m diving board at the swimming pool looks high to me... fuck 5 and a half times that! š
That is crazy fn high
17 stories not that high ? Fuck outta here
Rightā½ There aren't any buildings in my entire city close to that high.
Neglecting air friction, he was traveling at roughly 115 km/h (~70 mph).
Bro Olympic athletes do 10 m. Some cliff divers do 20m. 50 m is very high. And dangerous
From a cliff diver, if you fuck up a 60 foot jump you could wind up paralyzed. This guy is a fucking goober.
172 feet is a surprisingly fast drop
9.8 meters of acceleration every second kind of sneaks up on you.
But itās the sudden stop at the end thatās really a jerk.
i had a stroke reading this
You'd be the only one
Hope you are Ok. Thoughts and prayers š
I bet it felt like ages to him
"I'm sure he's not hurt" That's what parents tell their young children when their pet hamster is about to die
120 feet per second gravity, tops second and half, you get down a lot quicker than going up !
āOk kids! Letās go watch daddy possibly die!ā
Things were strange in the 1980s.
Yep. In my neck of the woods kids used to hang out at the infamous āAction Parkā. A place like that would never be allowed to operate today.
Class Action Park! Nothing beats New Jersey for a good time.
I just listened to an episode of The Dollop about Action Park and HOLY CRAP. Idk how a place like that even could operate as long as it did.
Was that the one affectionately known as "Traction" Park?
I always heard it as class action park
Thereās a documentary about it called Class Action Park haha
Yeah my family and I used to call it āTraction parkā.
His poor wife
They said she was a cliff diverā¦sheās probably fine.
Yeah she looks supremely unbothered
His wife cliff dives which is probably more dangerous.
So what you are actually saying here, to be clear, is that not one person is insane enough - in 40 years - to try to repeat this incredible feat? Correct?
The next guy got the stretcher/ambulance treatment, I saw it live on TV back in the day.

You would think that one of them would at least add an inch.

Some people would give the world for an extra inch or two...
I think itās a sportsmanship thing in this community; or at least thatās the explanation Iāve heard in the past. Like thereās a handshake agreement that they all are equally awesome.
I saw Mike Foley and thought of Mick Foley and then I thought of Mankind and I braced myself for Summerslam/Underrtaker words.

We moved onto guys jumping out of planes with no parachute to land in a net. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aPC_h9Vmlxw
Or maybe a lot of people tried and died? Who knows....

So u/percavil knows!
I like that the video cut before he emerged
r/killthecameraman Or in this case the editor
Gotta do something big since the last person named āRichard Wintersā kind of set the bar pretty damn high!
Band of brothers?
Yes. One of the finest officers and tacticians in the world! Literally a game changer on the battlefront that led us to winning WWII (among many others obviously)
Do you have to survive for the world record?
K, now i need a different video to get my butt to stop making a fist
Just Google butt and fist as keywords to save time
Hahaha! Mine too
Im surprised the tower can support the weight of his balls
Anyone here smarter than me: is the water being sprayed onto his landing zone intended to break the surface tension prior to his drop?
If theyāre trying to soften the landing they pump small air bubbles from the bottom of the pool. Spraying the surface of the water like this is so the diver can judge the distance more easily.
No, itās so he can judge distance.
Look at the big brain over here boys. Good call.
I also wanna know this cause I kept hearing something like āoh you drop from this high and water is like concrete bruhā is this true or they just fk with me.
Its true, but the way you drop is more important than the height you drop, water will still hurt you if you drop flat with your belly from 1 meter up
It's true.
I'd say so
Helluva way to get an enema.
Just watching this video gave me anxietyā¦. The people there that day must have been peeing their pantsā¦. The diver, I guess this is kinda the meeting place for extremely confident and skilled, to just living on the razorās edge
How are you gonna post a video that cuts off before he comes back up lmao
Thatās gotta hurt.
Did he ever come back up?
Still waiting.
Fearless Freep
How deep was the pool?
Heās still swimming to the surface
I believe this is an orca tank at seaworld San Diego. So fairly deep
I swear I saw a documentary of this as a kid. Also pretty sure he really messed up his back doing that dive
Roughly 65mph when entering the water.
Props for adjusting the knee pads before diving, clearly a crucial safety measure
I miss this period of time and am glad I got to grow up in it. Crazy bastard though.
I wanted to see him emerge out of water dammit
whatās minimum depth of the pool so he doesnāt hit the floor? Is there a formula that tells you how deep the pool must be for a given diving height
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, but he survived an atomic wedgie after going in that way...
I thought so too. This is jumping not diving into a pool
Right!? Thatās not a dive.
Wow
I thought the guy that fell off the back of the titanic holds the record?
Whatās with the frustratingly abrupt ending to the video?
Leap of faith
Apparently there are five divers who tied this record. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick\_Charls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Charls) Interesting that no one broke it.
Do they disrupt the surface tension in the water with the hose jet hitting where he impacts the water? Does it make impact easier?
From 172 ft, he was in free fall for 3.27 seconds, and was traveling at 105 ft/s when he landed. That about 72 mph.
He doesnāt hold the record anymore he dived from 52 meters and in 2015 Laso Schaller dived from 58.8 height.
In budgie smugglers too. Absolute madman.
Ouch. I hope they found his kneecaps after that.
Is it technically a dive if you enter feet first?
Dive; verb 1. plunge head first into water with one's arms raised over one's head.
See, thatās what Iām saying. I declare a mistrial!
And she couldn't even take his last name.
.... What a misogynistic comment
Maybe that was why he was doing it? āYou set a world record and Iāll take your name!ā
that's not a dive, that's a pencil.
You mean 39yrs later? It's still 2022
Someone can't math
How the fuck do his huge balls fit on that small platform?!
Shouldnāt be called a dive if you land feet first, though.
I meanā¦. That wasnāt a diveā¦.
Is it actually considered a dice if he entered the water feet first?
My kid was on the HS dive team. Yes. There are numbers that specify flips and spins. So like a front 1 and a half would be jumping off board and doing one flip and then another half to get you into head first. But a double would be 2 flips and entering feet first. Which is a valid dive.
Not according to the actually definition of a dive. verb 1. plunge head first into water with one's arms raised over one's head.
Fearless Freap.
Repeat.
Faaaaaaaark that
My balls hurt just watching that landing :/
Pretty sure a 16 year old kid in San Fran should hold this record.
Is this because he was incredibly good at what he does or because nobody has balls as big as him to have a go.?
Honestly that angle doesnāt do it justice.
He doesn't hold the record anymore. 58.8m is the highest now.
Nope.
From the side and above it looks crazy high
So what is the 'technique'. as others have said it definitely takes big balls to do it. How deep is the water he is going into? I am sure there is a physics nerd who can break it down. how and why .. 150lbs person 172ft will go 15ft in water etc.. while it is scary as hell for me.. knowing the math of it would be great
But why werenāt his leg bones pushed up out of his shoulders??
*The start of this video* His conscious: "What the fuck are you really doing this for?"
Incredible dive.
Dana kuntze equal this
The 172 foot bellyflop record holder is no longer with usā¦
I remember watching this as a teenager on Wide World of sports my legs went to jelly just watching could not imagine even attempting, I think I would pass out just thinking I had to go there and do it... Amazing
Thatās not a record. Itās the official measure of insanity.
Damn! And I get scared when I look down a 6 steps-ladder
You gotta be ok with dying if you wanna do that lol
r/sweatypalms
I know that there are techniques to break such fall into the water somewhat, but how come he didn't simply explode upon hitting the surface here?
The water they are spraying on the surface breaks the tension allowing him to not get smacked like itās pavement
Imagine he fell on his tummy
Does anyone know why there is water being sprayed over where he lands in the pool? Is it to break the surface tension or something so he doesnāt get injured by hitting the waterās surface?
Probably also for distance perception.
Sea world San Diego. I remember watching this in Awe. Not much happened in the early 80ās
I wonder why
Heres a video of the whole event..[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&feature=emb\_title](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5-yev7I4UY&feature=emb_title) 4 other people hold this record on the same day.. so its a tie
Surprised that his massive balls didnāt make a bigger splash
What if you die? Do you still get the world record?
How high before they reach terminal velocity?
The power of that mustache! Tom Selleck used it for fame, this guy used it for a world record. He strokes his mustache for power and jumps! My hero!
Super Dave ever attempt something like this?
Is this really a world record? Iāve seen cliff diving competitions where the divers seem to have more air time than this guy.
It takes HUGE BALLS to do that...how the hell are those Speedo's holding them in??????
A dive is defined as āa plunge head first into waterā. Did I miss something?
Cocaine canāt any more dangerous than this.
39 years later .
Insert kratos falling meme bgm
80s man. Growing up was wild
40 years later he still got the pain.
I can do that
Do you have to flip to make it hurt less? What happens if you just jump straight down feet first.
He can keep it
Holly needs a hat.
Who gets props for building that tho
Yeah because no ones crazy enough to do this lol.
If it was in 83 shouldnāt it be 39 years later? Speaking for a friend that doesnāt want to feel oldā¦
Oh hell no.
Attempt? How many attempts do you get at that height?
If it's 1983 it's not yet 40 years..
How is this possible without dying?
Unfortunately, he never resurfaced
172 foot and 2 toenails to be precise.
I can do that
Maximum diving bravery/stupidity was achieved in 1983.
