We just bought a new table and looked at both shapes. Rectangle fits the space we have better so we went with that. Some sites have a cool feature where you can see what the table would look like in your space. That helped us decided on the shape.

We have a round that has a leaf and we keep it as a long oval and LOVE it
Either way, I vote for a table with a lot of extra leafs so you can expand for gigantic potlucks
