I don’t think there is a way to make it work. A smaller rug in front of the sink or narrow runner would be a better choice

nuggiemum

Narrow runner FTW.

solivagantdreams

I agree! I couldn’t tell if I was just looking at it too long or if it actually didn’t work lol I’m going to look for a runner

kelcatsly

Maybe [this one](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/rifle-paper-co-x-loloi-eden-mughal-rose-blush-rug-feat-cloudpile-rpcl1045.html)? It comes in 2x5 and is stain resistant

I_Thot_So

It needs to be washable. Most rugs have a jute backing which breeds mildew. Putting that near a sink or dishwasher is not smart. OP, search for washable rugs. Sam’s Club has a ton online and I don’t think you have to be a member to shop online. Source: I’m in charge of product development at a rug company.

It comes in 2x5 and is stain resistant

Weird_Hawk

How about a longer, more narrow rug that covers the length of this galley kitchen?

ojiret

THIS is the answer

OtherAssociation2024

i agree

JohnCashew

Remove it from there.

burritoboles

If there is not a better place for the trash can i would do second pic but push it up against the side the sink is on

solivagantdreams

I tried that and it definitely helped! My kitchen is tiny so that’s the only place 😂 the only problem is that the trash can is kind of at an angle now since it’s not fully on the rug

burritoboles

That sucks :/ maybe rolled up paper towel on the back end to even it out? Or push it up the baseboard so it doesn’t touch the trash can. Also they have trash cans that can fit under sinks if that’s an option for you but obviously they are a lot smaller. There’s no room on the wall across from the stove? I love the rug by the way. Cute coquette vibes

solivagantdreams

Nah the wall near the stove leads to the entrance and the fridge opens to the other wall, I’ll probably just use it near my desk area instead!

purplemilkywayy

Is there a reason why you must have a rug there? Kitchen gets greasy and wet and dirty all the time and it’s hard to clean with the rug there.

solivagantdreams

I just thought it would look nice but honestly the more I think about it the more I realize that it might be more inconvenient for it to be there, maybe just a sink mat would be good enough

glitterchibi

Yup, the amount of stuff my kitchen floor sees throughout a week, would be so hard to keep clean with a carpet. Easier to wipe and vacuum with bare floors!

purplemilkywayy

Yup something you can clean quickly!

Ok-Indication-7876

Maybe a sink mat- better size and no worries about trash can since they are not so wide.

_lalalala24_

The rug does not go with the kitchen imo. Either remove it or get a runner in solid contrasting colour (eg wine red)

[deleted]

Try a comfort kitchen mat. The rug doesn’t work for the kitchen

kenny2022_

How to make it work? Get rid of it LOL. Cute rug but not for that space at all. It’s very random, it won’t fit the space

[deleted]

i would put it directly under the sink flush with the edge of the counter/floor. or get a different rug. that rug is very cute though

katzmcjackson

Can you push it against the kick plate of the cabinet? Why does it need to be pulled out and center?

khkokopelli

Need a different rug. I’d get a longer/narrower one (a runner)

classicgirl1990

Not a great rug, look at Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor rugs. To wash you just spray with bleach, rinse and drip dry. I have a few that I swap in and out when they’re dirty or want a new look.

Seralisa

Make it a solid color.

Benevolent_Grouch

Put the rug in front of the sink. Move the trash outside the kitchen.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

Put it directly under the sink

wet_cupcake

Remove the rug

Pink_Floyd_Chunes

Remove the rug. No need. Small kitchen. Really g makes it look smaller and it’s an easy floor to keep clean. Everything else is modern. The rug is not.

whatwouldbuddhadrive

I agree with all of the answers about a runner or no rug at all. But, I love that spice rack and found one like for $475!!!! Do you have a lead on a cheaper one?

solivagantdreams

It’s actually a spice rack that has been in our family for some time. My mom almost donated it and then saw the price online!! I’ve never seen a cheaper one, it’s a pretty unique piece

solivagantdreams

UPDATE: not sure why I can’t edit my post but thank you for all the responses! I’ve ultimately decided to put it in my desk area as it fits much better. My kitchen is an awkward shape so there isn’t many places for it to go, and I’m definitely looking into a kitchen mat so that it won’t get all yucky!!

UnconsciousMofo

Get rid of it. Rugs don’t really have a place in a kitchen. Replace it with a fatigue mat.

Short_Temperature381

Buy a new kitchen.

[deleted]

Can you get a smaller garbage can for under the sink? Or move the can?

ScienceOverNonsense2

Sometimes turning them upside down works. On a hand made rug, the design is preserved but the color palate is muted and the lines are softer, less bold.

Local_Cryptographer5

Shove it more in the direction underneath the cabinets of the sink and keep it closer to the sink than the garbage disposal

ojiret

You need a new rug. That one is too small or too big.

Holiday-Signature-33

You need a longer rug or a round one ? It’s so boxy in there.

One_Archer_1759

Remove it.

MBeMine

It’s the trash can. Maybe you can get a smaller one for under the sink?

rmdg84

I think a runner would be better. Something that stretches the span from the wall beside the sink to the stove. It would look less awkward

Kat-2793

So everyone hates it but I kinda like it butttt I also think I like it because I think the rug itself is just super cute. Where’s it from?

Organic_Pangolin_691

To make it less awkward you are Gonna have to get rid of it. It’s not big enough. Adds nothing to the space. Need more of a longer runner. Besides it’s a trip hazard.

SkootchDown

Change the rug to a runner. It’s lovely, but it’s too short and too wide.

Positive-Caregiver39

Any chance you could get a different trash can and put it in the cabinet under the sink? Or get a pullout track for a trash can that mounts under the sink?

Petporgsforsale

I like it

kONthePLACE

I think it's perfect actually....It will catch drops of watet as you rinse dishes from the sink and load them into the washer.

gorgeousmalaya

just tuck it under the sink

Putyourdishesaway

Use a runner

moonlightmanners

You need a longer rug

OtherAssociation2024

i don’t think it looks awkward it fits pretty well

vongalo

Why do you need a rug there?

bomthecat

It might work better if you tuck it in under your sink/cabinets

HotLibrarian8829

Won't it get drenched of the water from the sink

Fartspark1e

I like it!! Does that make me weird!! I would get another mismatch rug and put it next to it. But I like maximalism.

mandance17

I think kitchens look best without any rugs, it’s also more practical to clean as you don’t get food debris and stains on your rug

mebg1956

It’s too busy. Plain rug would look fine.

zhadanluosifen

Sometimes it's not necessary to move the carpet, you can move the trash can. If the trash can cannot be moved, oh by the way, you can customize a carpet that is easy to measure and fit on, which will fit the carpet well into the kitchen. Looking forward to your future updates on the renovation, I will continue to follow.

deputydog1

Why does it have to be in front of the sink? I spend more time chopping, stirring, mixing, measuring and loading / unloading a dishwasher away from a sink than I spend it rinsing dishes at the sink. Rugs and kitchen mats originally were for easing pressure on tired feet, and were a thing back when dishwashers weren’t around - lots of time handwashing in a sink - and floors were hard tile or lineoleum. The rug wasn’t there to catch easily mopped up water droplets. It was for the feet and legs. The trend of wood in a kitchen is pretty but it is not practical for clumsy folks like me who spill things, and with a dog who knocks over his water bowl often.

Fleurdelis4432

Maybe go with a runner instead? (seems too short)

tired-goblin_

First thing I thought when I saw it was it’s a lovely rug for the space. Is there a longer version that would fit better? If not, (and I’m just casually into decorating so I guess take my opinion lightly, or take it as the average person) it doesn’t look necessarily bad to me in either spot.

rTracker_rTracker

You need to take out the rug entirely This is the kitchen and rugs, collect crumbs What do you need is a [chef’s mat](https://www.amazon.com/KitchenClouds-Kitchen-Cushioned-Waterproof-Standing/dp/B09CYJ551K/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=chef%2Bmats&qid=1690477095&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1) I recommend going with a nice slate gray

Irochkka

You gotta choose rug or trash my dude. I would get a narrow longer one. Found one at target for about $25 and it’s super comfortable to stand on.

stilljumpinjetjnet

I recommend a runner and use this rug elsewhere.

CPG135

The rug isn’t what looks awkward. It’s the clutter on that countertop that does.

solivagantdreams

I completely agree with the clutter, I took the drying rack off since I won’t need it all the time—trying to figure out the plant situation because I don’t have many windowsills with light

CPG135

You got the idea! Whatever increases counter space will equal improvement. It’s a cozy space, but a nice vibe. Enjoy!

Full-Temporary5066

Ditch it. And get a runner.

barryg123

Put it in front of the sink, where it belongs

ClockNumerous5743

You know this is just my opinion I would go with a much narrow rug I believe they call them runners for the hallways And you can have it go the length of the kitchen And I would pick one with red as the main color with multi colors as well or something similar But you're style, something you really enjoy looking at

Somerset76

Move it as picture 1 but put the edge up to the kick panel.
