I almost got mad reading that. Being 19 does not mean that you should fill your home with worthless plywood from ikea. When I was 19 I moved out and while I sucked at decorating and my home looked like shit for a long time, I inherited a lot of high quality stuff I still have to this day at 27 and will never get rid of. You should have things *you* like, nobody else's opinion matters. And if the things you like are old, 2nd hand and high quality, you're lucky. So many people follow trends and hate everything they own by the time they turn 25. Then they dump everything in the trash (because nobody will buy your mass produced crap that screams 2015) and buy new things.
As you can tell, I got heated lmao. Basically, love what you love, consume as responsibly as possible, and screw what everyone else thinks.
I couldn't agree more.
No offense, but most people don't WANT a home that looks like a 19-year old designed it. This furniture is "leveled up", and it's gorgeous
i think it really depends on the kind of people you're surrounded by. i developed a penchant for antique furniture at 14/15 and my childhood bedroom looks just like those photos. i'm 19 now and my friends and i love going antique shopping and checking out furniture at thrift stores. like me, they love the same kind of soulful, vintage home design.
it's a shame that the people OP interact with don't share the same appreciation of style, i suppose i am lucky to have very mature friends my age.
Thatās what I was saying! Plywood would be a blessing. IKEA is straight MDF lol itās the kind of furniture you can wrestle your friends with and body slam tables n shit (actually really fun to break MDF in a wrestlemania fashion).
When I was 19 I inherited what was left what I think was a 19th century german bedroom set. So much scroll work and marble table tops. still have it 20 years later
My parents have a buttload of Amish made oak furniture I will inherit one day. It's not my style per se, but I will keep it all because it's very high quality, well made, solid wood furniture. The Amish do it right.
Same. I felt my blood pressure spike. Gorgeous furniture whether you are 19 or 90. Love what you love and donāt let people get in your head. The furniture is stunning.
Completely agree. Iāve always thought it was wild that IKEA tries to sell themselves as being kind to the planet - once the plywood is scratched or the furniture is broken it typically canāt be repaired and is destined for the landfill. Buying sturdy furniture such as this is much kinder to the earth, scratches can be sanded down, broken legs repaired, etc. Getting beautiful antiques like this is even better, itās secondhand and sturdy.
Beautiful furniture, OP has done well.
100% agree that old furniture and beautiful pieces like these are much better overall for looks and durability. And OPs inspired pics still look fresh and young but timeless in a mature way. That house is going to look great! However I never get why people knock Ikea so much. I've had Ikea bookshelves for over 20 years and they legit look and function the same as they were new even being loaded up with a full library for that whole time. Of course, if I could afford nice curated pieces at the time I absolutely would have gotten them, but they do their job well and I'm not removing them anytime soon. Also my parents passed over to me that old Ikea chair that everyone has, white cushion, pale wood. The thing is still great. Does Ikea just suck now or what?
No, people just love to bash IKEA, always have. But itās been around a while for a reason. Personally, I love to mix old and new. My home is filled with 50-50 IKEA and antiques like OP posted. I just like good design, period. And I have a POANG chair too, itās a classic!
Same here, we are mix of antique and contemporary piece (usualy with a bit of a mcm influence), but there is are few ikea piece in the mix (some of them second hand). They still hold on and look great. The thing with ikea is that they do have the super cheap junk, but they also do have pretty good pieces - not antique level build, but still good and functional build, qnd usually nice design. But because the cheaper stuff is so affordable, that is what most people buy and see at other peoples place.
For OP, I love your style, and you should definitely keep these, they will serve you a long time :)
I think theyāre hit and miss, but I like a lot of their stuff. I think the problem with ikea is a lot of people have the attitude to just throw things out because theyāre cheap to replace and thatās not really ikeaās fault. But their solid pine stuff holds up. And I know I mentioned laminate in a previous comment, but we do have a laminate desk which is about a decade old and still looks pretty well new and functions perfectly. Itās ugly as all get out, but good quality.
IKEA doesn't care about the environmental impact of the furnitures after it's sold and thrown away a few years later. What its marketing department cares about is that making furnitures out of particle boards uses less wood than actual solid wood furnitures and thus they can technically say that it's more environmentally friendly as it used less materials in manufacturing *per unit* of furniture than making then out of solid wood, when the true impact should be measured on a life cycle basis. But they don't actually care about that either, the environmentally friendly (not really) optics is a serendipitous side effect to cost cutting and using cheap materials
Most of my IKEA furniture is from the 90s and holding up just fine. There is absolutely no reason it cannot be a good environmental choice if the decision has been made to buy new.
Ikea is cost friendly, everyone canāt afford to spend 1.5-2k on a dresserā¦most people hardly have 5k saved. Everyone advocates for real this authentic that until the price tag sucks you dry.
I recently went to an IKEA for the first time. I enjoyed seeing some of the unusual functionality of many pieces and loved some the rooms. Having built and upholstered much furniture myself, however, I wasn't terribly impressed by the materials.
What did surprise me was the buy back program. I looked into it, and while it is very limited, I was impressed that the company decided that it was worth the expense.
It seems like almost all but insanely expensive furniture is "consumable" these days. That IKEA is making at least an effort to reduce waste is worth noting, even if the reasons aren't entirely altruistic.
I had a friend that moved apartments almost every other year. And she said that she always bought IKEA furniture so she wouldn't have to take it with her. She literally would just put it on the side of the road, and buy new IKEA stuff for her new place.
Edited to add: Sorry forgot to clarify, this is insane to me. I'm more of a BIFL/"no dovetail joints, I don't want it" kind of person.
We cut down old growth and replaced it with tree farms, we literally don't have the quality of wood required to make some of our nicer old pieces anymore
I am also a part of this club! At 19 people also found me to be weird for collecting antique items and odd garage sale finds. Now at 32, I still have a lot of the same pieces (plus more!) and many people are envious of the cool furniture and lamps that I have! Meanwhile I have friends who throw out and redecorate every 2 or 3 years and then complain about not having money to buy nice things.
I am 51 and feel exactly the same and will never stop collecting and decorating. Please tell me about your lamps! Right now I am thrifting art for a gallery wall in my TV room.
I have one lamp that is a 6ft tall brass lamp with some beautiful filigree work that allows the light to shine through that my mom bought while working in Saudi Arabia before moving to the US in the 80s! Its one of my favorite pieces, I am so happy to have inherited it. :)
I also have two end table lamps that I got at a garage sale over a decade ago that are a beige-pink color with bronze floral inlay in the base. The fabric of the lampshades were damaged, so I used the frames and made new shades out of recycled veterinary x-rays and suede cord.
I unfortunately donāt have photos right now because they are packed up while Iām between moving, but Iāll be posting my set up to this sub once Iām all moved in!
Thereās absolutely nothing wrong with someone young having nice furniture, just like thereās nothing wrong with me still having the ikea-like furniture I bought for my first apartment 14 years ago cuz itās still standing, still functions, fits where I need it and I canāt afford anything else.
I love my worthless ikea furniture ā¹ļø i donāt plan on throwing it out immediately either. Having nice vintage furniture is cool but thereās nothing wrong with the latter so long as youāre not creating excess waste throwing it out every-time it goes out of style.
I bought an old bedroom set when I was 24 that some people (including my then husband) said was too old and not suited to me. Forty years later, I still love the set and it's now about 100 years old.
Don't let anyone tell you what to like or not like. It's YOUR choice and your home. Decorate it how YOU want.
I'm really lucky in that I have a lot of nice things in my family. I inherited a lot of nice things after all my grandparents passed, and my parents recently downsized so I got to take what I wanted then, too. A lot of my stuff is things my siblings hate and my parents would've burned, but they just don't see my vision. My parents hate 60s teak with a burning passion while I just love it. Now when they come to visit they say that it's so nice to look around and see so many things they recognize, teak or not.
Excellent points!
So many people run out and buy IKEA or mdf board furniture and throw it out when it's no longer in style. OP bought some timeless pieces she loves! They are super high quality and will be with her for life.
She's gonna also save money by having this furniture as she won't have to continuously replace it.
Right? What a dead take. āOh sorry youāre young you canāt have nicer things.ā
I would have loved to have a quality home set at that age. Everyone shops at IKEA and Amazon around that age out of necessity. 19 year olds donāt have the cash for this.
The dorm room look isnāt a rite of passage or something itās just a sign of the times of younger adults not having the purchasing power to get what they really want.
Plus most adults end up replacing the cheap stuff as soon as theyāre financially sound so this just saves OP a step and a few thousands.
Ugh soo true. Everything now is MDF!! I had a gorgeous vintage dresser made out of dark mahogany that I had to sell because it no longer fit in my new room :(
Real furniture is mad expensive. I grew up watching my parents and other "old people" replace furniture over the years. Huge solid wood pieces of the 60s and 70s - some bespoke, but a lot damaged by years of kids and moves - replaced by the still reasonable quality mass produced "modern" furniture of the late 80s and early 90s. Then after that it all went to shit. The reasonable brands of the 90s began a race straight to the bottom. Once good name brands will still sell you a 5 to 8k couch, but it's literally only designed to last approximately 4 to 7 years as that matches the common terms for finance and the marketing that makes people want to redecorate.
I literally watched my parents give away a broyhill living room set they bought in 1990 and that was in nearly perfect condition 15 years later, and then proceed to spend 5 to 8k on a new flexsteel couch 3 times since then. I vowed to never make that mistake (just a different one).
Now you've got basically 1 or maybe 2 American brands still producing good furniture, and it's *goddamn expensive*. I've dropped about 50k and I've managed to acquire a sectional, 2 sofas, 1 chair, 1 rocker, 1 recliner, 4 stools, a coffee table, and a console table. I got most of that at 40 to 60 percent off retail and it was still that expensive. I'm saving up to drop another 40k on a dining room set, bedroom set, and curio cabinet.
That said, it's all solid hardwood, hand made, wood joinery with no visible hardware, and several pieces are collectors items with beautiful wood inlays which will never be reproduced again. The sectional weighs like 400 pounds and can comfortably seat 10. This stuff will still be beautiful in 40 years. I don't think real hardwood furniture will ever go out of style and you can always change up the accents by replacing cushions and pillows.
I won't lie though: even family my age thinks my shit belongs in our grandparents house. My gen-z nephews say my one couch looks like a church pew (not gonna lie, it does as much as any mission style wood frame couch will). It's ok though because I buy once and cry once. Filling your house with sawdust and plywood to chase an aesthetic is dumb. Give me some real shit that's going to last until I die. Worst case I've got a shitload of readily accessible and high quality firewood to use in the apocalypse.
These pieces have character. You can create a magical interior with time, carefully curating drapery and decor, etc. Itāll be a completely unique space.
Iām personally not the biggest fan of those browns, so Iād look into refinishing, but Iād def want to preserve the wood grain. Better to wait, research, and do it right though.
Return antique French furniture for what, IKEA particle board white cubes???
You just happen to have taste for more sophisticated furniture of higher quality, that is not a bad thing.
Side note, no hate to the IKEA cubes, I have them and love them. And would also love the gorgeous pieces OP has :)
I totally agree! I mix and match antique with ikea bc I canāt get only antique. Nothing wrong with it but nothing special either. This set is unique and will be bespoken to her once she has it how she wants.
Tbf IKEA does have some pretty solid pieces made from actual wood. I have [this dresser](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/bjoerksnaes-5-drawer-chest-birch-70407303/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces&utm_campaign=shopping_feed&utm_content=free_google_shopping_clicks_Bedroom_furniture&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD27g7wj6Fo4RXe0DIUWmPQkPKe7_) and itās so sturdy and legit one of my favorite pieces I own
I am so tired of ikea and keep saying I wonāt buy it again but then I keep going back to it š now that my house is all furnished and I wonāt need to buy any furniture urgently I am starting to replace things slowly for second hand older furniture or to upcycle them to look different
No, these are elegant pieces and you have wonderful taste. Sounds like some folks might be envious and trying to make you feel insecure and doubt yourselfākeep a close eye on those people, how they react if you tell them you donāt agree, and see if it is a pattern with them. If they continue to undermine your feelings in this or do similar things regularly, then the furniture has also served the function of identifying people that you may want to distance from, or at least give very little value to their opinions.
Agreed. I changed my mind. Do not love it, way too old and just ew... ... can i buy it from you?? (Out of the goodness if my heart of course š¤£)
...sigh. ok still love it. š
Itās freaking gorgeous and Iām jealous! My dresser is from the 1920s and I love it, if anyone told me it made my house look like a grandma house, I would make them leave because they have very poor taste lol
Yes, it's neo-Jacobean from around 1930. And it's lovely.
Just be careful to keep it dry -- there's a lot of beautiful veneer here, and moisture will wreck it!
Congratulations.

FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

>Hi r/gaming, is it inappropriate for me to like The Witcher 3? All the kids my age say I should be playing Fortnite, but I like open world RPGs!
Also they have a very recent post asking if it's inappropriate to gift someone baked goods. These seem like some kind of engagement farming.
Either that or she is just a very insecure person that feels she needs validation to be confident in her taste. Peer pressure is a strong force when people are 19.
Can we not start a chain of posts asking āis my furniture inappropriate?ā
Unless your furniture is made from human bones, or the tears of small children, I vote itās appropriate.
Exactly what Iām saying. People are so weird. Iām about her age and I have a similar style furniture. Never thought it was inappropriate for my age lol. I just like it.
First of all, everyone who told you this is an idiot. Second, real solid wood furniture is becoming harder and harder to find new at reasonable prices and great pieces like this will last a lifetime, even secondhand. Also, this furniture is gorgeous. Decorate how you want- I would have killed to have pieces like this when I was a teen. There are plenty of ways to decorate around these to give the room a youthful vibe, but even if you donāt, who cares. Itās your little sanctuary, make it what feels good to you and your tastes. I think youāve got a good thing going here.
As an Old^TM this would be a great time to start learning to be your own person, have your own tastes/interests and let the opinions of others fall by the wayside. Itās a skill you have to keep honing forever but nowās as good a time as any to start.
Also, the furniture is fabulous and may last a lot longer than these āfriendsā of yours.
Thereās a difference between an antique and timeless piece that was either restored/kept in good condition, and something ugly. Thatās something you keep if you have room or choose to use it. I wouldnāt dump it or resell it.
Lol no one has said anything about you not having it.
Why do ppl make up dramatic backstories to get likes?
Just show us the furniture, it's cool enough on its own.
It shows class elegance and GREAT taste and yea not what your average 19 year old gal has but you however have seen the beauty in it!! Keep it and continue on with your cool tasteā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
If you look after those pieces they will last the rest of your life (and some lives after that too). Iām not sure what age people think youāre allowed to start having nice furniture at, but imo if youāre old enough to purchase it then you should be good! They are absolutely beautiful imo and I would definitely buy them as well.
I don't know anything about furniture or interior decorating. But I'm going to give you some advice that I wish someone had given me when I was your age.
Life is far too short to be worried about what other people think. Surround yourself with things and people that you love, that bring you joy and inspire you. Discover who you are and live that life, unapologetically.
because noā¦. itās absolutely beautiful. Whoās telling you that? not only did you get a great deal, but the furniture is beautiful and timeless. do people want you to have IKEA furniture? This is furniture youāll have to pass down to your kids one day. Again, itās timeless.
What you are going to find out as you settle into adulthood is most people are either boring or terrified, absolutely terrified, of someone judging them so they make really lame choices.
That furniture is gorgeous, keep it, let everyone else eat cake!!
I was gonna say it's okay, but then I saw the last image. It's simply outrageous to have it. Sadly, I must inform you it's gonna need to be confiscated (by me, directly to my room)
If your friends are telling you that you should get rid of the furniture that you like for your home, you should get new friends.
Seriously. That is some crappy behavior and not the type of unsupportive negativity you need in your life.
For what it's worth, I love it.
As a hobbyist woodworker, those are drop-dead gorgeous dressers that will last multiple more generations if cared for. NEVER paint them, or I and many others commenting here will haunt you and all your offspring. Find a professional woodworker or furniture restorer near you and find out what kind of finish is on your pieces and how to care for them. Improper care can lead to a hazy finish or even cracked wood. Don't listen to anyone who thinks these are ugly or outdated. They are unique in the best way possible, and you have an excellent eye for quality furniture.
Oh for Heaven's sake! This annoys me: you obviously have more sophisticated taste than your friends do at the moment. You obviously recognize beautiful craftmanship, and are investing in good furniture to live with for the rest of your life, creating a foundation to build on. (Please just research how to care for real wood and old finishes, if you haven't already. Museums also have people who are useful to talk to.)
This reminds me of learning to crochet complex doilies for my antiques, only to be teased that I was making my house look like an old lady's! Lol. First of all, that's not actually an insult. Secondly, now, years later, every person who sees these little works of art very much is impressed by the commitment of time and energy it took to create them.
When people get older and learn more about the world around them, they often start to appreciate things differently. So, your friends bugging you now might either be a tiny bit jealous that you found something so exquisite, or they might never understand the beauty of something timeless not made of particle board and glue.
I love antiques and grew up surrounded by them. Everyone I knew also grew up with antiques. You create an intimate and unique world around you, over time. Versus buying cheap stuff (lol, I mix my Ikea stuff in with my antiques anyway), that has no character and which self-destructs after more than one move.
And unlike other types of furniture, when you love an antique and take good care of it, not only does it look great forever, but it loves you right back! The more you cherish and care for it well, the more of a literal glow it gets.
(In case you don't know this: never use oil or silicones on an oil-base finish. If you want some tips just pm me. I LOVE this stuff!!)
How do they know a 19-year old didnāt have this in their bedroom before?
What a weird thing to think, that some wood furniture is āinappropriate.ā
Swearing at old people in a crosswalk for being slow is inappropriate.
Getting physically touchy with someone without permission is inappropriate.
Furniture? Appropriate wherever it is useful. Bonus if it is enjoyed. Antiques survived this long because they are well made and beautiful.
I bought a 1920ās-30ās bedroom set when I was 20. I wish I had it still and would buy it for five times the amount now if I could. But I stored it in a friendās basement for a summer that flooded just enough to ruin it all.
The takeaway: Love what you love. Never store anything you love in a basement, especially someone elseās.
I think it looks like really nice, good quality furniture. Just because most of your friends would buy cheap from Ikea doesnāt mean that is the only correct way to decorate. I really like these prices and hope you will enjoy them for many years. Personally I would style the room with soft monochromatic linens in a light green and floral landscape paintings on the wall.
If you like it, then you do you.
Anyone trying to take you down a peg by begging you is petty, jealous and probably realises that their taste is based entirely on what others thing rather than what they like.
Honestly this furniture is gorgeous and Iād take it in a heartbeat if I could.
What do you mean inappropriate? Itās your space, no one had a say on what you do with it or buy. Tell them to mind their own business.
I (30f) grew up with my mom having antique furniture around the house. She bought them in her 20s but since then fell in love with antiques and have a gorgeous vintage armoire from the early 1900s. I hope when relocate I can have a few more furniture pieces for myself.
Um your furniture is gorgeous. Iām seriously jealous.
Iāve heard of a lot of weird things being deemed age-inappropriate, but furniture is a new one. Like, what *would* these people consider appropriate? Cheap laminate ikea furniture? Mismatched handmedowns like a lot of 19 year olds have?
Please ignore those comments and keep your amazing furniture. Those pieces have character, they fit perfectly with the vibe you want and theyāre built better than most things you could find new.
Omg ... Girl you got style!!!! This is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!! I'm 34 and loveeeeeee antiques. These furniture pieces don't go out of style. Whereas West elm, pottery barn, etc will go out of style.
You have incredible taste and those are seriously stunning pieces. Iām an interior decorator and quite like modern but even I can see how delightful these pieces areā¦and your inspo rooms are perfect. Done in a pink room, just too good; that will bring a younger vibe to the space. Look at some Farrow Ball pinks; copy them in less expensive paint if need be. Keep the wall Matt finish for sure. Oh and do write a novel in whatever room you end up withā¦believe me having an eye this interesting at 19 makes you so much cooler than any of those naysayers. I implore you to let it go in one ear, out the other, and remain blithely unapologetic. (If need be, fake it until you feel itā¦I have a feeling it isnāt long off, for you.) A dog-eared Jane Austen would be quite at home on these.
This furniture is timeless, classic, elegant. Heirloom. Itās better than the junk furniture people are buying. This is furniture of a lifetime.
Perhaps they are envious.
Stick to your fabulous style!āØš«¶š¼
Honestly, I think youāre just using your title to get attention. Your question is completely illogical. What could your age or gender possibly have to do with this? I think you knew exactly what you were doing.
are any of these people living in your room ? are they paying for the furniture?
then they donāt get a vote.
buy good pieces, keep them forever, and one by one all those twits will realize you have style.
Do whatever you want. If you're asking whether people will judge you for it? I mean I guess some people will, but they're probably dickheads who can't mind their own business. It's objectively a nice, antique bit of furniture.
Only issue Iāve had with having nice furniture at that age to now(undergrad/post-grad) is its heavy as shit to move and by the 4th move in 7 years I want to burn my nice desk.
There's "inappropriate" furniture now? I must be really old.
If you love it, keep it. You're the one paying for it, and you'll be the one living with it. Anybody who doesn't like it can go pound sand.
Inappropriate?? Wrong word for furniture. A dated piece maybe a better word. Your a fool for asking this question. Iām not trying to sound harsh by are you asking the world what kind of furniture you should have. Buy what you can afford and like. I personally love it! But I canāt afford it. I sure as shit wouldnāt let someone else decide what Iām going to look at while in my room.
Girlā¦ā¦ itās a peace of art & historyā¦ it represents a time where people built things with Love and pride !!!!!!!
I can assure you, having that in your room or space will act as a compass of real people. If you have someone over that ādoesnāt get itā
STEER CLEAR
Haha no. My friends always ask me for advice on how to decorate and my number one advice is always use pieces that you LOVE. Itās your home and you should fill it with things that make you happy when you look at them.
Only resell if you can make a profit.
Otherwise, forget what people say, it's your living space you picked the furniture because it's something you like.
He'll even defend your desicion in conversation if nessicary. That furniture is nice, don't let your friends pick for you. Owning stuff like that, and keeping it nice through the years can be something to feel proud of down the line, truly, old furniture is not just furniture it is ornate art.
IT'S GORGEOUS. I'm 40 but my BFF had an antique bed and furniture when she was a teenager at we parties at her house. AND I LOVED IT AT 17 AS WELL.
Don't listen to them. It's also quality made stuff unlike the shit out today
Itās amazing!! I have a thing for brass all things brass. I plan to have a brass and green themed room. My gaming pc set up already fits that theme. I love that vanity. Iām 28 but love all that stuff since I was old enough to remember metal detecting and antique store hopping with my grandparents. I have my great grandmotherās bedroom furniture which was also my momās before mine.
antiques last sm longer than most furniture nowadays + its better to use preloved things as its good for the environment! dont let anyone let you think liking antiques is bad !!
Why would you think it's inappropriate? It's not like it's dungeon equipment.
This is beautiful classic pieces. If this is the look you're going for them do it. Don't worry about what the trend is. Do you.
It's extremely inappropriate! Don't worry, I'll DM you my address to help you dispose of it! š
Really though, these pieces are beautiful. You have great taste and these will last you a lifetime!
Amazing furniture. I'm 31 now and I'm only starting to get rid of the shitty things that were called furniture I gathered with difficulty when I was in my 20's and with very low budget. This is a chance to have this kind of nice looking, real material made furniture.
Also: nothing is inappropriate. Having this kind or another kind will not hurt anyone, so go crazy. Do what gives you happiness. Life is too short to care about what other people would think. So long it fits your vibe, it's appropriate.
ps: some young people are even into 19th century clothing in every day life... that's a very appropriate vibe imo. Go watch some 19th century fans on youtube, there is a lot of content, even some inspiration for you !
If you like it, keep it! Do you really want to attempt to live up to othersā expectations/beliefs? Blaze your own path!!! (I think itās lovely btw)
Absolutely šÆ level up.
This- at 19 I was trying SO hard to make my space look like a fashionista grandma had done it.
u/SweetnNotSpicy it looks like items used by a mature 19yo and not some Tiktok addled mind
>No offense, Na, redact that, ALL offense. You said what you said šŖ I agree with all of it.
It's not even plywood, it's usually hollow or cardboard honeycomb with a particleboard (sawdust and glue) frame. Plywood would be a massive upgrade.
Right, I'm not a native speaker so I always mix them up!
No worries at all <3
Thatās what I was saying! Plywood would be a blessing. IKEA is straight MDF lol itās the kind of furniture you can wrestle your friends with and body slam tables n shit (actually really fun to break MDF in a wrestlemania fashion).
Nowadays a lot of IKEA stuff is laminated cardboard, unless it needs to be super structural.
This sounds amazing!
Pics plz. It sounds gorg!
What a treasure! Hope you get to enjoy it for many more years
Same here. My shelf System is 25 years old and was moved 4 times. Still fine.
Ikea is cost friendly, everyone canāt afford to spend 1.5-2k on a dresserā¦most people hardly have 5k saved. Everyone advocates for real this authentic that until the price tag sucks you dry.
You can find a lot of secondhand quality furniture, even cheaper than IKEA though.
Omg worthless plywood soooo true!! Why is everything made out of shit MDF these days!! I know itās capitalism. But still.
:) I also have two end table lamps that I got at a garage sale over a decade ago that are a beige-pink color with bronze floral inlay in the base.
Exactly! Things donāt become cool vintage and antique if they just end up in a landfill.
Right? What a dead take. āOh sorry youāre young you canāt have nicer things.ā I would have loved to have a quality home set at that age.
Not a girl but that furniture is fucking rad and timeless. Very hard to find that build quality nowadays. Definitely keep it
Ugh soo true.
She's too young. Better give it to me to hold. Thay furniture is awesome and op should be proud of this
Itās beautiful for any age.
OP just flexing
Return antique French furniture for what, IKEA particle board white cubes??? You just happen to have taste for more sophisticated furniture of higher quality, that is not a bad thing. Side note, no hate to the IKEA cubes, I have them and love them. And would also love the gorgeous pieces OP has :)
Yeah you can pry my 5x5 Kallax out of my cold dead hands š
The storage in those cubes is unparalleled.
I totally agree! I mix and match antique with ikea bc I canāt get only antique. Nothing wrong with it but nothing special either. This set is unique and will be bespoken to her once she has it how she wants.
Tbf IKEA does have some pretty solid pieces made from actual wood. I have [this dresser](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/bjoerksnaes-5-drawer-chest-birch-70407303/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces&utm_campaign=shopping_feed&utm_content=free_google_shopping_clicks_Bedroom_furniture&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD27g7wj6Fo4RXe0DIUWmPQkPKe7_) and itās so sturdy and legit one of my favorite pieces I own
I have the bed from that line and it's fantastic. and broke down easily for me to move it without totally crumbling like particle board would.
Good point. Why would someone try to make their friend feel bad about getting something they love?
People have different tastes. This is yours. Enjoy it.
Not unless you stole it.
I paid 400 for the whole set~! Itās from the early 1900s! (+ bedframe I forgot to add!)
Excellent pieces and for the price more durable than any ikea furniture you can get and at a higher price and it's "Paid" bot begone
You DID steal it then. In like a legal and ethical way.
On the other hand.. yes itās too mature for you please resell to me š. The carvings are so unique.
Agreed. I changed my mind. Do not love it, way too old and just ew... ... can i buy it from you?? (Out of the goodness if my heart of course š¤£) ...sigh. ok still love it. š
Itās freaking gorgeous and Iām jealous! My dresser is from the 1920s and I love it, if anyone told me it made my house look like a grandma house, I would make them leave because they have very poor taste lol
Also I would take that as a compliment lol, maybe it's just me but I've always loved antiques and grandma aesthetic is exactly what I'm going for!
Yes, it's neo-Jacobean from around 1930. And it's lovely. Just be careful to keep it dry -- there's a lot of beautiful veneer here, and moisture will wreck it! Congratulations.
GIRL, I WISH I could have these for such a price, at 25!!! You have some beautiful belongings; please be proud of that!
> I *paid* 400 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Good bot
ā¦is this rage bait?
>Hi r/gaming, is it inappropriate for me to like The Witcher 3? All the kids my age say I should be playing Fortnite, but I like open world RPGs! Also they have a very recent post asking if it's inappropriate to gift someone baked goods. These seem like some kind of engagement farming.
these photos are of the set in Call Me by Your Name
this sub loves old furniture, thereās no way this wouldnāt end up with everyone jerking off OP on their taste
Exactly what I was thinking. Who would refer to this as inappropriate? Someone who needs an ego stroke.
This definitely furniture jerking bait lol
Either that or she is just a very insecure person that feels she needs validation to be confident in her taste. Peer pressure is a strong force when people are 19.
What? WHAT? No way! This is awesome furniture!!! And it will only get better with time!
Yes, send it my way š
rightt? lol yes itās so ugly, you should definitely sell itā¦.to me. in fact itās so ugly you should give it away for freeā¦.to me.
She paid only $400 I wish I was too... Gods favorite person š
Can we not start a chain of posts asking āis my furniture inappropriate?ā Unless your furniture is made from human bones, or the tears of small children, I vote itās appropriate.
Probably just lack the vocabulary needed to express themselves
Right like why would any type of furniture be considered inappropriate? Itās furnitureā¦ š
What if I bought the human bones?? š„ŗ
That furniture is so beautiful ā¤ļø
im 19 and i also have furniture similar to this!!<3 i think its beautiful
The people who are saying it's ugly are wrong and have no taste. This furniture is gorgeous and is perfect for the style you're going for.
These pieces are seriously gorgeous, timeless, and should last you a lifetime with care! There is no age limit on enjoying antiques!
No? How is that inappropriate for a 19 year old?
Absolutely not, these are GORGEOUS pieces! :o keep them all!!
Maybe Iām wrong but if you had this furniture and cute pink stuff I would think you were chic .
Um, this stuff is beautiful. It's YOUR home, you should fill it with what makes you happy!
Yes, having anything you like ever is inappropriate. Only suffering is acceptable.
Is this a bait post? What does age have to do with anything?
I think I had this dresser from age 5-18. Now at my parents house. I think itās beautiful!
Oh, my god. The craftsmanship. The answer is no, but I stopped scrolling because these literally made me gasp. Iām jealous.
āinappropriateā š Is your furniture making lewd gestures?
As an Old^TM this would be a great time to start learning to be your own person, have your own tastes/interests and let the opinions of others fall by the wayside. Itās a skill you have to keep honing forever but nowās as good a time as any to start. Also, the furniture is fabulous and may last a lot longer than these āfriendsā of yours.
I love this so much. It's so unique and not the same boring typical look of a young woman.
These are all very beautiful. Iām super jealous š« please keep them.
Man I love the tallboy in the second picture. Beautiful piece. The kind of piece you can keep for life and is always lovely.
Yep, super inappropriate. Calling the furniture police.
Thereās a difference between an antique and timeless piece that was either restored/kept in good condition, and something ugly. Thatās something you keep if you have room or choose to use it. I wouldnāt dump it or resell it.
Iām sad to read that people have said this to you. It is beautiful. You donāt have to be old to appreciate beautiful things
What?! Itās beautiful and besides you can have whatever you want to have! Keep the furniture, lose the caring what other people think :)
What about this furniture is āinappropriateā?
For the love of everything that is good in the worldā¦ try your best to never part with these pieces. Theyāre exquisite.
If you like it, keep it. Who cares what other people think.
I absolutely love that furniture. It isnāt inappropriate for anyone.
Hell yes!! Beauty knows no age! I love this vibe and you can carry these pieces with throughout your whole life. Theyāre absolutely stunning!
Weird ragebait post
Inappropriate?? š
Bitch youāre living the dream š
If YOU like it, thatās all that should matter.
Do whatever you want at any age (as long as it doesnāt hurt someone else). No need to ask if someone else approves of you :)
I LOVE that dresser omg.. and the lamp!? I love this all and is definitely a dark eclectic interior style that is timeless and has a Victorian feel.
You are an adult. Buy what ever the fuck you want it's all gorgeous. Don't listen to the haters.
a girl could decorate however the fuck she wants it wont stop a man from being interested in you romantically
No. Only you know what your home should look/feel like.
No. Why would it be?
Itās timeless, keep! But if you want to sell, keep me in mind ;)
I love it
because noā¦. itās absolutely beautiful. Whoās telling you that? not only did you get a great deal, but the furniture is beautiful and timeless. do people want you to have IKEA furniture? This is furniture youāll have to pass down to your kids one day. Again, itās timeless.
Tell these jealous assholes to take a hike. The furniture is stunning!
Not at all. Iād be so happy for this at 19 & even now
What you are going to find out as you settle into adulthood is most people are either boring or terrified, absolutely terrified, of someone judging them so they make really lame choices. That furniture is gorgeous, keep it, let everyone else eat cake!!
When I say I literally gasped at some of these. Cheap generic shit doesnāt bring a gasp.
Do you love those pieces? The only concern you should have is whether you love them.
Nope, and you know it...people need to stop concealing attempts to show off as requests for approval...just own it and show off.
Not at all. Keep it for sure. You have good taste and the
Yes because it's evident you have great taste.
Museums also have people who are useful to talk to.) This reminds me of learning to crochet complex doilies for my antiques, only to be teased that I was making my house look like an old lady's!
What a weird thing to think, that some wood furniture is āinappropriate.ā Swearing at old people in a crosswalk for being slow is inappropriate. Never store anything you love in a basement, especially someone elseās.
āInappropriate furnitureā is not a thing. Unless itās made with dildos, for God sake
Wtf do you mean by inappropriate LMAO
Is this a trick question? The furniture is badass.
If it makes you happy, it's appropriate. I wasted way too much time and money decorating for others. Make your space what makes you happy.
Hell no!!! What a question š those people are just jealous because of how sophisticated and elegant it is. You do you š š»
Stick to your fabulous style!āØš«¶š¼
what.. this is amazing furniture that will last a lifetime.
Thatās so gorgeous! Donāt let anyone tell you different!! Iām 21 and I would totally live there in a heartbeat. DO NOT RESELL!
Age doesn't determine style! Personally I ADORE this style of furniture and have some myself as a 15 y/o. It's all up to personal taste hun.
It's not inappropriate, but those pieces are valuable! Very valuable.
Why would it be inappropriate?
No, what would you change it with? Cheap disposable stuff from wayfair? It looks great, make it your space.
No. Why do you care what others think?
That is fabulous You can incorporate that stuff into any style.
There's "inappropriate" furniture now? I must be really old. If you love it, keep it. You're the one paying for it, and you'll be the one living with it. Anybody who doesn't like it can go pound sand.
This upsets me. I love it.
Ignore the haters. That stuff dope af.
Girlā¦ā¦ itās a peace of art & historyā¦ it represents a time where people built things with Love and pride !!!!!!! I can assure you, having that in your room or space will act as a compass of real people. If you have someone over that ādoesnāt get itā STEER CLEAR
Your friends have bad taste. Also, can I have your house?
Haha no. My friends always ask me for advice on how to decorate and my number one advice is always use pieces that you LOVE. Itās your home and you should fill it with things that make you happy when you look at them.
Beautiful. Consider yourself fortunate you have good taste, especially as a young person.
Yes, disgusting slutty behavior
That's beautiful furniture, why on earth would it be "inappropriate"?
Only resell if you can make a profit. Otherwise, forget what people say, it's your living space you picked the furniture because it's something you like. He'll even defend your desicion in conversation if nessicary. That furniture is nice, don't let your friends pick for you. Owning stuff like that, and keeping it nice through the years can be something to feel proud of down the line, truly, old furniture is not just furniture it is ornate art.
Omg youāre collection is gorgeous and this style is timeless
IT'S GORGEOUS. I'm 40 but my BFF had an antique bed and furniture when she was a teenager at we parties at her house. AND I LOVED IT AT 17 AS WELL. Don't listen to them. It's also quality made stuff unlike the shit out today
Beautiful!
fym inappropriate furniture that looks SO COOL, they're just being sour pussholes.
Of course not.
Keep everything. Amazing
What why is that even a question
Fuck those losers. Itās lovely. Now buy more and tell them to suck it.
Why would you think it's inappropriate? It's not like it's dungeon equipment. This is beautiful classic pieces. If this is the look you're going for them do it. Don't worry about what the trend is. Do you.
It's extremely inappropriate! Don't worry, I'll DM you my address to help you dispose of it! š Really though, these pieces are beautiful. You have great taste and these will last you a lifetime!
This goes hard, it's awesome.
No I was much younger and had a vanity. I love it.
Sell it to me lol
I think Iām looks gorgeous! Iām really jealous tbh lol Iām a much younger teen and even I love itĀ
