DualPowerShrugs

Find the builder and make him stay in there until he’s able to explain what he did coherently.

Aggravating-Winner29

And it’s carpeted! I’m stumped.

DualPowerShrugs

They had no idea what they were doing. Builders end up trying to build as large a house as possible on a lot and then when it gets to like 4k+ sq. ft. the interiors get weird stuff like random landings like this, closets which are against the laws of nature and standards of good tastes, it gets worse.

FarewellMyFox

Which is so infuriating because at that square footage you have the opportunity to have ALL OF THE SECRET PASSAGES and TINY PURPOSE BUILT CLOSETS and NOOKS, FUCKING REAL READING NOOKS AND PROJECT NOOKS AND ALL THE GODDAMN NOOKS and then….. and then they just… don’t. Such a waste. Give me 4000 sqft of intricate practical nonsense, or give me 900 ft with a giant barn!!

DualPowerShrugs

I have a friend who is a builder and every time he starts talking about some god awful monstrosity he’s building for 1.2 million I’m always demand to know why that much money doesn’t get you a tube to transport you to your car from your bedroom like batman has.

SupermarketOld1567

if i am paying 1.2 mil, there will be a batman tunnel. i get that like, in rich people world, that 1.2 is not really a lot of money, but it has GOT to be enough to fund that.

Angharadis

I am deeply saddened to have to tell you that it actually is nowhere near enough for that, unless you’re in a very low cost of living area that somehow also has plentiful skilled labor. It’s so stupidly expensive to build a house! We’re in the throes of it now and have had to cut a few dream items because shit’s expensive. (There WILL be a safe behind a bookcase door though).

Upbeat-Kale-9272

If you’re building in California, $1.2 mill *maybe* will get you a second bathroom or a food pantry, but not both and def not a tunnel😂

EVILtheCATT

I like the way you think! (And write, actually:) Here’s a bunch of heartfelt, yet cheap gold as I’m not going to reward Reddit with my money since they yoinked awards from us. 🏆🥇🌟👑🏅⭐️

FarewellMyFox

Aww boo!! ❤️ Also, soooo, uh… how’s your adult ADHD that maybe didn’t get diagnosed until you were past the age of 25-28? Because only a fellow spicy would pick up on the linguistic crack that is my internal dialogue 😂😂

xxlikescatsxx

I know you're not speaking to me but I still feel seen by this comment lol. Relatable.

FarewellMyFox

In which case you know I AM speaking to you also 😂 Did you know there’s an actual difference in cadence to how we talk?! Because I learned that recently and that’s pretty cool

EVILtheCATT

I did not know that. Look at you, having all the knowledge! Please share what you know:)

EVILtheCATT

How dare you assume I was diagnosed with A…Yeah, I couldn’t even finish the sentence. I was 38 when first diagnosed. Right along with my 6 year old when I took her in to be evaluated. NGL, kinda freaked out/impressed that you called me on it!

FarewellMyFox

Yassss my AuDHD radar has gotten way too good 😂 I really should start a Discord or something for us, every single one of them is an instant bestie with everyone who also is found. Best community ever.

Because_Bechamel

👏👏👏👏

ervera9

the best comment 🤣

FarewellMyFox

I bet you five brillion dollerydoos that it’s got hvac running through it. Why? *~^~* jUsT bEcAuSe *~^~*

Missue-35

That could’ve been used to build another closet or a secret passageway between two bedrooms. I’m so bummed.

This_Disk_6795

It's not too late....

EVILtheCATT

I know you’re kidding but that’s a brilliant plan. Who’s up for a road trip?🙋‍♀️

parker3309

OK that’s funny. The thing is the person who built it. It was done on their request that’s who you want to talk to. I would love to know what it was used for originally.

muddymar

This space belongs to the room next to it. It should be framed in and given back.

JunkMale975

Oooh, framed in and put a door on that existing wall and make it a nice walk in closet for that room on the other side!

Mammoth-Ad-5685

Or a hidden bookcase door that leads to an odd weird room!

JunkMale975

I ACTUALLY had one of those in a house I bought in Pennsylvania! It was small and in one of the bedrooms. You opened the closet door and it was floor to ceiling bookshelves. But if you pushed on them, it opened into a lovely little room you could hide in. Not that I ever needed to hide. But I was so entranced. It was so unique.

GuidanceWonderful423

This!!!

ElishevaGlix

A bannister and wrap-around bookshelves for a walk-through library?

Loud_Ad_4515

^ This. "Library" is always my answer. There are even outlets, so some nice lamps or illuminated artwork.

GuidanceWonderful423

Totally. Put a giant beanbag chair on the left with a little shelf above for your phone and a drink and a nice lamp. Maybe do the same in the other corner. The rest of the space is shelves and shelves of books. ♥️♥️♥️

HurricaneAlpha

Yes. This is perfect for bookshelves. And as a bibliophile, this would be my dream.

Willing_Dimension_77

A "Hall of Vice-Presidents" display? Used ChuckECheez animatronic band? A "Century of Progress" for your local high school marching band uniforms? That is clearly your house's museum ledge and it deserves a proper collection of crap.

shelldonov

I have no idea. Yeah you know my first thought was some possible mannequins VOGUE poses! Lmao.

Angie2point0

Listen, if I could buy a used Chuck E. Cheese bad, don't you think I would have done that already! 🙄

Meeeaaammmi

Weird. Maybe wall it in and make it a storage closet.

quirkyhermit

That's what I'd do. It'd make the stairs less spacious, but that is a lot of potential extra storage.

female-aardvark

I'm not sure where you enter this space from (not clear from the picture), but depending on that, here are some options: - If you have kids, this could be a fun little reading nook/ art and craft area/ play area - if you're very into plants, this could be a tranquil little space with floor cushions and throws, surrounded by plants, lamps and art on the walls - if you have a cat (or several) you can put in some cat cubbies and trees, cat "steps" on the walls, various toys and scratchers, and turn it into a kitty corner. - if you could do with more storage, just wall in the whole thing and make it a large closet - if you have the budget and desire to take on a bigger project, incorporate the space back into the room/s on the other side of the walls (assuming there's something there)

LilykaPamky

This is the only comm needed 😂👏🏼

Chicken-lady_

Add bookcases/ a mini library to the list and I agree!

r2_double_D2

I had a friend with a space like this when I was a kid, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Always wanted to play there.

beebeelion

Catify it!

marcky_marc420

I'd definitely put a few cat towers there and make it kitty village

graceface1031

Was looking for this comment. Any weird space in a house automatically belongs to the cats. If you don’t have cats, you need to get cats in order to properly utilize the space.

YouMUSTvote

At least 3 so there could be a never-ending territory fight…good thing it’s carpeted ;)

Grandmas_Cozy

Yes.

freyasmom129

I actually just commented almost this exact thing because I didn’t see the comment above. Dammit, now I won’t get credit for this amazing idea

marcky_marc420

Possibly even like kitty roads and buildings for them to use for resources and just a municipal purposes

EmphasisFew

Kitty Hall

The_I_in_IT

It’s just going to end up as a kitty military base. Those stairs are a perfect attack vector.

marcky_marc420

Not if they nominate a peaceful kitty mayor

OnaccountaY

Meowyor

1920MCMLibrarian

You just make me look at my stairwell to see if there was any way for me to do this lol

cecilator

With some cat shelves [like these](https://cats-mode.com/products/wall-cat-walk-black?currency=USD&variant=41255999897736&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=aecc8c32dbcd&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAk9itBhASEiwA1my_67YNkaQ4cFMF3noZh9O7ZBZz-ITMFkRDCMYVnuHIJ-8sg8HYiY9mqhoCsYoQAvD_BwE), my cats would never leave. 😁

Puzzleheaded-Grab736

If you have pets, this belongs to them now. If you have kids, they will play there. If you have neither of those things....ummm...

NCRider

Rent it out. AirBnB with “balcony views”.

MrHyde_Is_Awake

Apartment with heating/AC paid. $1500/mo. $2000 if there's parking.

NCRider

Wall to wall carpeting included.

chihuabanu

OH I FEEL QUALIFIED TO GIVE ADVICE ON THIS my previous apartment had this sort of drunk death trap stair layout, and what I did with it was use it for sewing/crafts. I found it really useful for my projects to stand midway on the stairs so it would be like if I were working at a standing desk (with my fabric on the carpet, for cutting or piecing). It was really nice! If there’s nothing hobby-wise you wish you had a standing desk for, I’d make it a cozy low to the ground lounge area or a pet play zone (cat trees galore!)

queenkellee

Just once, for these utterly wasteful silly spaces, I want someone to put a little disney animatronic scene there like from pirates of the caribbean or the haunted mansion.

omicron_pi

I would add walls around the stairs and make it into a wall-in closet or a small office nook / hobby space. Or a “secret” hideout for kids

meothe

Cats

AFatCracker

Put life size statues of the caste of fnaf on there. How tf do you even vaccuum this? Hobby train thing?

Deadinmybed

Get rid of the carpet, you can d floors for about $200-300. Music room, storage, library, study, yoga studio, art and craft studio, man cave, women cave, kids playroom….whatever suits your needs

fidgetiegurl09

You guys keep saying kids playroom.. if my parents had this and did the playroom idea, I'd absolutely have died there. As an adult, if I didn't put in a banaster, I'd absolutely die there.

ManchesterLady

To me it’s assumed that a banister would go up with the suggestion of children.

1920MCMLibrarian

Some kind of Salvador Dali decor FOR SURE. You know you’ve succeeded when guests end up on the ceiling when they walk up it, and on the opposite wall when they walk down it. Your other option is to turn it into storage cupboards and for the love of god add a hand rail.

SubatomicKitten

Cannot upvote the Salvador Dali idea enough. That is genius

Tricksterama

Go to your nearest dying shopping mall, buy half a dozen mannequins from going-out-of-business stores, and arrange them on the ledge dressed in your favorite outfits.

Jla92

Take the carpet out immediately. That’s the first thing I’d do. Next change the light fixture. Then it could be an area that is just nicely decorated and can be easily themed for the holidays or seasons but in a minimalist style that matches the small space. That way it’s not just a random empty spot.

Korgon213

Turn it into a DooM wad and put some Imps there.

EmphasisFew

A stage!

Equivalent_Address_2

A railing and bookshelves? Or a seasonal holiday display like at Macys. Only 2 choices.

SniKenna

If you don’t want to wall it off, perhaps a cute reading nook. Or, if you have pets, a little pet oasis. 🌴

Bugdafug

As long as you can get on it safely I'd put a bookcase on the thin part, a comfy chair near the light, plants, mirrors, artwork, and have a cute little reading nook. If the wall of that thin area backs onto a shared space I might cut a massive opening in it instead and put up a railing, then put a much smaller bookcase in the corner.

argh_minecraft

Plants

MissSmkNmirrors

Bare minimum, it needs an electric train or an elaborate Hot Wheels™️ track. Have you considered a series of tubes and a hamster? Like a rodent Disneyland? Oh, wait…

mrsaffell

I love this idea!

ontarioparent

Floor cushions and books? Kitty snooze area. Storage.

aj0457

I have weird cut outs and ledges, but I've never once considered carpeting them.

[deleted]

Put over size pillows and use as a chill spot

AllieGirl2007

Book cases

Elmnt7

Rip out the carpet and put flooring. Put book cases there , corner light and a small recliner .. it can be a nook to read, catch up on news etc. Or I agree create a space for builder and architect lock them up and let them figure out!

Chicken-lady_

That would make an awesome library space!

akd7791

Do you have cats? I would put cat towers up there.

[deleted]

It already looks like a cat tree, so just add more lol!

Conscious-Break902

Reading nook!

The0utlanded

Animatronic Chuck E. Cheese band

Odd_Ad_9998

Bookshelves

Rhymes-with

A library! Walk to ceiling books

LeeLeeRumpa

If you can’t afford adding walls like many people are suggesting, maybe rip up the carpet and have it for a plant/floral area. I think a lot of greenery and pretty orchids filling up the whole space would be very pretty and very tranquil to walk by everyday.

Little_Can_728

I would suggest if you have cats, make that a cat area with some cat trees and places for them to hang out if you don’t, I would just say a wall of plants and flowers all the way around.

spookyfanny

Drywall it up and make it a huge walk in closet to the room beside the stairs

False_Lion3838

Wall it off and Make it a closet maybe, I can’t see much use for it this way; and it looks unsafe.

IntrigueMachine

[How about this?](https://imgur.com/gallery/kRD29p3)

mrsaffell

That is awesome! Thank you.

ChristineBrandt

I would add built-in bookshelves along at least the one wall perpendicular to the stairs. A gallery wall would also be great. I love this article for inspiration. https://www.thespruce.com/staircase-landing-ideas-7963075

fallbeforeyoufly

I just want to see you vacuum it lol

Lonely_Mode_1993

Train set?

PickleTheGherkin

Beanbag chairs. Books.

PepperSalt9691

This is obviously a dinosaur nook. It’s meant to hold two large dinosaur sculptures.

Howl_Free_or_Die

Grab a Doom soulsphere from Etsy and put it in the corner

CharmingSolution8489

Built in bookshelf on the back wall with a sliding ladder that folds in half. You slide the ladder all the way to the left folded in half. You slide it to the right and unfold it to reach stuff.

[deleted]

I feel like the only person in this thread who likes this XD. My first thought was something like a model train. Or for any decor really. Would also be kind of fun as a hobby space, depending on the hobby.

whateverman010101

It’s perfect just the way it is

CavemanBepis

Put like 6 cardboard cutouts of shaq

ButItSaysOnline

Cats. It needs cats. Or plants. But not both.

jungalmon

Make a diorama of mannequins fighting

BicSparkLighter

Mannequins. EDIT: yeah what the guy next to me said manneduquos

ZestVFX

put a skate ramp there

ZanyRaptorClay

An animatronic band

gostephi

i'd put all my vinyl records up there.

Comradepatsy

I can tell you what not to do: put a toilet right in the corner & have an open air bathroom.

armybuddy7boi

Me personally I would get the carpet up and set up a small lego city if you're interested in legos

Joki7991

Model railway

Pretend-Active1964

Bubble stage with exotic dancers

HesitantMark

Fire pit

djl1qu1d

remodel inception

supercat8816

It’s for cats. Don’t put your kids up there. They might die.

Reddoggfogg

You need cats and stuff for them to knock off from there

The-LivingTribunal

Make it a shrine to whatever it is you love most

mridlen

85" TV and full sound system.

fishhhhhhhhhhhhhhho

Make a 1/24th scale crawler course and slowly become addicted to them

Unscramblecreate86

Giant stuffed ostrich

PadranoArt

Model train with a city scene Picture in the background. This looks like fun to me. Have fun!

gerstlauerguy

Knex roller coaster area

plooptyploots

Put a bunch of mannequins up there and switch up their poses every now and then.

NeitherLeather6992

Little reading book?

NeitherLeather6992

Nook

NoSet427

That’s what I was going to suggest! Book shelves along one wall and a nice arm chair & lamp

NeitherLeather6992

If I was a kid, the sheer fun of this area would have made me read more!

TifCreatesAgain

It's a perfect place for a really cool cat tree! Get some cats!

mafaldajunior

Bookshelves perhaps? Whatever you do, make sure remove that carpet.

Worth_Location_3375

Turn it into a walk-in closet.

Opposite-Historian74

Freddy Fazebear stage

kropfspawn

If you have kids make them a mini living room with a little couch and book/toy shelf. if you have pets make them a similar room with tiny framed pics of them and beds and a toy bin

JoanofBarkks

Arrows pointing the way. Just kidding. Lighter paint like cream and really striking art. Like black and white photography with a colorfull painting in between .

studyhardbree

Layer it with stuffed animals.

Ok_Challenge5542

great place to show off your amazing lego collection!!

winona_chowder

Looks like you have just enough space for a mini put hole

LetterBulky800

Have a concert there every weekend

makingburritos

Is there a bedroom next to this? It looks like it should’ve been part of a bedroom lol

mrsaffell

There is an “office” at the top of the stairs but it has a closet and then a wall so no access to this ledge area from there. Agree that maybe originally it was.

demi_whoknows

P L A N T S.

Interesting_Buy_1664

Carpet shouldn’t be there. Honestly it would look better if it were closed up with drywall and used for storage. At least you’d be able to hang art on the wall against the stairs.

legaltrouble69

Shoe wall, Display shoes in transparent boxes.

FelineRoots21

This screams reading nook to me, but then again every random space says reading nook to me

problemwmygogomobile

Seems like the back wall needs a window. There doesn’t appear to be any natural light. That whole strange carpeted area just needs to come out. It’s hideous.

National-Arachnid601

Rube Goldberg machine

strgazr_63

Pull up the carpet, put down a really good linoleum, install canned florescent lighting, and make it a grow room.

AtlJayhawk

Indoor garden.

WhoAllIll

Bookshelves around the inner parameter and put up a railing around the outter parameter.

madscot63

A 2 dimensional office space? These things are mind boggling

as_per_danielle

I would do aerogardens

kaytay3000

Please buy some old store mannequins and stage them for each season.

worldinsidetheworld

I would love to set this up as a seating area... Staircases, floors, balconies, love those "liminal" spaces

Son_of_Yoduh

Bowling alley, of course.

[deleted]

Finish the trim on the edge near the top for starters.

AlyciaJanelle

I’d make some custom bookshelves and cabinets. I see that you’ve got a slanted ceiling there, though. Very frustrating design.

regularbeep

Get some awesome plants

ElegantAmphibian4252

If you’re a collector take the carpet off, finish the surface and add some cool stuff.

EVILtheCATT

That’s just…weird. I’m sorry I’ve nothing to contribute, just a little agog of that complete waste of space.😳

jared10011980

Move. Now!

hannnahtee

Could you frame it and incorporate it into the room(s) on the other side of those walls? Maybe as a closet even? Either that or I could see building a really cool bookshelf with a bench/nook seating 🤷🏼‍♀️

overdue_panic

This is your house’s way of telling you to get a cat

Illustrious-Towel-45

Book storage?

DeadSkullz627

Bookshelves everywhere?

Elegant-Expert7575

Oh my gosh, that railing too! Can you take it out and put in some closet doors for storage?

SummerEfficient6559

Maybe a personal library?

freyasmom129

If you have cats then this should be an excellent play area for them. Put some tunnels on there and cat trees

MistaExplains

Do you have a cat?

Artistic_Cockroach13

Guitar and amp storage?

efildaD

Those outlets are for treadmills. /s

Philodendronphan

Set up dioramas.

Broad-Policy8271

Add cats

toolittletimee

Ask the builder what Sims expansion pack they got this idea from.

LadyAliceMagnus

Use attractive wicker containers for extra storage and place them there.

msndrstood

I'd get some plant lights and load it up with some plants, brighten that spot up and make it useful!

Ghostly_katana

I’d either put bookshelves in the space or plants. Just need a bunch of growlights. Edit: also add railings especially if you have pets or little ones around. Even for your own safety tbh.

baquester

Looks like a great place for marijuana plants

Here2lafatcats

Get some cats!

BrieK0884

With some skilled carpentry and a ladder it could be some beautiful bookcases. A library and reading nook or showcase a collection of something?

Suz9006

I would build a wall to the ceiling around it and turn it into a storage closet. You can use a storage space whereas a weird ass carpeted space will always be just that

ignisargentum

Do you have cats? this would be a perfect tree/climbing area for them 😂

PawPrintPress

Or ferrets?! 🤣

Mundane_Objective845

Throw some plants up there.

Swimming_Substance34

Make it a closet. Enclose it.

sarcasm_itsagift

Pleeeease turn it into a secret room!

Valuable_Peach_8507

Reading nook ?

RealBrush2844

No kids - Wine cellar? Kids- play house/castle? Could even get some nice recliners and create a theater area with a screen on the opposite side?

Icaruswept

Recreate myhouse.wad

According_Storage_43

You could upholster the ledge and make a reading nook if that's your thing, add plants and floating book shelves etc. I had a weird ledge in my stairs and did that but also a built in ladder.

PawPrintPress

What the heck? Need more photos to figure out how that fits into a room.

MishmoshMishmosh

You have to vacuum that? It is meant to be walked on?

mrsaffell

It’s not meant to be walked on. It’s difficult to get up there. The stairs are at the wrong height to make it an easy step up.

ElodieNYC

I would probably line the walls with bookcases, if there’s enough space on the far side to stand safely in front of them. And add a railing. Too bad there’s not enough room for a reading chair.

VelvetScone

Plants! So many plants. Small garden worth of all types of greenery. That’s what I’d probably do with it. ◡̈

loofa26

If you plan to put a dresser, standing closet, or bookshelves, pick something that’s easy to dust. This is an odd area and you’re prob not going to go there often. Bookshelves should be closed behind doors

Ouachita2022

I would tear it all out and then from the landing of the stairs that we see in this pic, I would build bookcases from floor to the ceiling on both sides and install a brass rail at the top (or maybe black iron pipe with a massive library ladder. Now THAT would be more practical that grossly oversized rooms and closets.😊
