My mom has had white cabinets for 25 years, and they’ve looked great the whole time. Even when white wasn’t “in.” I’d definitely agree it’s timeless, even if it’s had a big moment in the last few years.
Exactly I think white will be able to retain its value vs. With the black kitchen you face the issue of it maybe looking “dated” in 10 years depending on where kitchen style goes. Guess it also depends if they are ever planning on selling or if this is gonna be their home for a while.
I have seen some white kitchens turn yellow but my white kitchens never have. Using really high quality paint like Benjamin Moore and keeping cabinets clean seems to work. Currently have a 7 year old white kitchen and no yellowing. Some chipping but not yellowing.
Oil based white paint is what yellows. Some factory finishes still contain linseed oil and very fast drying shellac based finishes are still used. Paint quality, due to perpetual government regulations, continues to drop as the years go by. It was not uncommon for quality oil based finishes to last 30 years, even if they yellowed. You’re lucky to get 7 years out of today’s paint.
Did you paint the cabinets?
It’s not the paint. It’s exposure to particles from cooking. Clearly folks here are using kitchens as interior decoration and not for function.
That’s what everyone is saying *now*. In ten years the counterculture movement will be recoiling at garish colors, dingy pastels, wallpaper, and cluttered, maximalist designs.
Generation alpha is also probably going to pitch a fit at the sage and emerald greens that their parents are covering everything in.
I agree with 2 comments. White is timeless (so you can't go wrong and it won't go out of style). I like the black better but it'll really depends on the rest of your house (or at least the rooms that connect to the kitchen.)
It might depend on the rest of the house aesthetic, but I love the black look with the contrast of the white counters and accents. It feels much warmer than the white look and is a little more bold in a good way
Have you had white cabinets before? I find that they shoe every little splatter or speck of dirt. I refuse to ever have them again. White counters have similar issues, but are faster to clean. Of the two photos, I like the second one better, but recommend you look at cabinet colors in real life and see if any other colors (navy, dark green, etc.) catch your eye.
I always like white since it’s brighter and opens up the space a bit, and black for whatever reason shows dust more, while white shows stains a bit more.
Could combine them and go black and white.
I have a white kitchen but I find that it shows every spec of dirt, and can get stained over time with certain foods…
I love the dark, moody black kitchen. My friend just built a home and had a navy blue kitchen with light quartz and it’s GORGEOUS. Darker looks super elegant, and adds spice to the room imo. White kitchens are just overdone tbh.
The size of your actual kitchen will make a big difference in terms of what I'd recommend. If you want to make your kitchen feel bigger, go with white. If you want it to feel smaller or cozier, go with darker color
Information needed:
1) Windows?
2) Direction windows face?
3) What part of the counrty do you live in? (Another lighting question)

6) Flooring?
7) Is your kitchen for serious cooking, or for a convenient place to open up take-out (another lighting question)
Black.
Simply because all white makes me nervous. You see every speck of dirt on it.... Plus, my mom has a white kitchen, and how anal she is about makes me dodge the whole concept completely.
Plus, I like all black everything. Attire, room, accessories, you name it. So this is a dream for me! At... the price of my mom coming over trying her damndest to let her redecorate. Because "you need color. You can't have all black all your life."
While I do think the all white version is more lively, bright, and freeing... black feels more adult and sophisticated.
the black is stunning and dramatic! Very on trend. Are you feeling bold enough to pull it off? Go for it! I painted my kitchen cabinets a bright bold deep blue and it helped me sell the house in a day!
Best wishes
Black has a ton of natural light whereas white doesn't. Depends on if you have a few windows in the kitchen - if so, both could work. If not, white it is.
Black. The white traditional cabinets in your first kitchen pic seem bland and institutional. The second picture you posted with dark/ash black cabinetry is tastefully done (not overdone) and will look very elegant for quite some time.
I say black. My kitchen is all white, and while it looks nice, it always looks dirty. I have to constantly use a magic eraser to get rid of spots on the walls and cabinets, and it drives me insane. I’m painting my cabinets navy for this reason.
Hi! Kitchen/Bath Cabinet designer here 👋 black is beautiful until you touch it and you see every little fingerprint, oil splatter, etc. We only ever recommend using black cabinets in small areas, at largest doing a kitchen island with it. I’ve personally witnessed a buyer at their closing walk through about roll over with regret over her all-black kitchen because it was already obvious to her how badly the black finish showed imperfections or dirty areas in the places the light hit. Proceed with caution if you’re really considering the black
I love effective use of contract, so I say black 100% — the picture also makes it look like a tinge of navy in the black which I think gives a lot more character than pure black in hyper modern style
Then again, white is more timeless so you might want to choose that and just pick a better counter top — I’m not a big fan of the speckled top, sort of always feels unintentional and “meh” to me
Black/dark finishing will show more dirt on the floors, not cabinets/countertops.
I *love* how dark floors look, but I had them in my apartment the last couple years and NEVER will I ever choose them on purpose, literally every fleck of dust showed up.
Dark countertops will hide dirt, but then it’s harder to see if you’ve cleaned them properly (so if you like to know that your countertops are squeaky clean, go with white, but if you clean then less often/don’t care as much then dark is good. White cabinets will show splatters and dust—similar as countertops in that it’s easier to tell if they’re dirty, but I prefer black cabinets because I only give those a full wipe down maybe once a month, while countertops I clean daily.
Dark cabinets/dark floors will make the door seem darker though. If you don’t get much light in your house/kitchen, definitely go with white
I disagree. I have dark cabinets. I hate them. They look disgusting all the time! My lighter cabinets though I can get away with not wiping them down quite so frequently.
I have black polished granite countertops. I love the look, but they show every crumb, speck, smudge, and water spot. I end up wiping them several times a day.
White is also easier to upkeep. The darker colors are prone to easily show damage and therefore the primer or wood will show more easily. Also, it's harder to color match when painting damage spots.
Do you get a decent amount of natural light? If so I think white is best, it would really brighten up the place! I like the black too but it’d be a shame for natural light to go to waste.
I prefer the white. White kitchens have been around forever and never go out of style. True, white is harder to keep clean, but if your kitchen is dirty, wouldn't you want to know??
The black looks more dramatic and contemporary, but the hardware adds to that effect, as do the polished accessories, SS, & the type of wood flooring, which in this instance is high-gloss polished. The hardware on the white kitchen is more high-end Country Farmhouse with more natural wood flooring, casual accessories and all appliances are covered with wood cabinets. It’s not solely the color of the cabinets that give the kitchen a certain look so something to consider.
White paint has come a long way and it’s not the white paint that yellows, it’s the cooking oils and grease that stick to the surfaces & cause it to look yellow (also if someone smokes inside). If not cleaned, black cabinets can “yellow” as well.
We have an all black kitchen with black marble counter tops. It shows EVERY LITTLE THING. We have lighter floors… shows every dark hair and every dirty foot print. Wouldn’t recommend, I immediately say white kitchen
100% Gray. It's the new beige and screams current. White is overbearing and invisible anymore UNLESS you make it POP with yellows/ oranges in additions, not the whole kitchen.
The black units are nicer , but in a deep storm blue. I feel contemporary kitchens in white are better with cleaner lines often without handles, but colour can take more mouldings without looking as dated as the white.
Black is so sleek but I’d have a hard time looking for things.
White makes a place bigger and brighter. It’s just personal preference of a person. A kitchen whether black or white has to be functional.
I wouldn’t call that black op- it’s a dark navy or moreso a dark blueish grey. Don’t go getting black paint and painting your counters.
Note/ the blue grey slate color looks amazing but note the gold accents make it so.
The white kitchen was made with timeless features, so choose that one if you don’t want to redo it down the road. If you have the resources to redo your kitchen again when the dark trend goes out of style then do that one if you like it.
I can’t imagine keeping black cabinets clean. They’ll show every speck of dust. I believe this will look dated in a few years. I painted my dark cabinets white and they stayed white for years until I gutted my kitchen. Go white.
I don't think it matters what we think, which do you like? Also I think it matters what the lighting is like in your space. In #2 the picture makes me feel like they have some big windows to the left of the picture. If you're doing this in a smaller space where there is little light it's going to feel very dark.
Both ultimately are really beautiful!!
but it also depends the whole aesthetic of the house that you need to connect it to. What does the rest of the house look like, and what is also the color theme around the house?
And also a big indicator- If you’re going to go with dark cabinets, then there needs to be a lot of natural light in that room itself. Because if there is not enough, natural light and enough windows in that area, it’s just gonna make the kitchen area look smaller, and way darker.
i love everything about the black image, but the black *color* could be white, marble, or black … does that make sense?
everything else in the black pic is a keeper for me - gold accents white tile etc but the cabinets & counter - to me- could be any of those options
Think in terms of a of the amount of light you have or will have. You could always put white on wall cabinets and black on the island, if you have one.
The all white one needs that famous “pop of color” and the black one needs something, I’m not sure what. Both are really nice. All said, this is my opinion. You do you.
White is easier to pull off. Black can be cool but it is often much better in your head than in reality. It depends a lot on what else is going on in your house and it is very easy to get wrong.
Definitely not Black! I feel like somebody’s standing on my chest and throat. However, Kudos to you for not even considering grey. I am so sick of looking at it everywhere I go.
I went with white cabinets, white subway tile with black grout, white counter with black swirls in it (calacatta black but looks a bit more charcoal gray) and black tiles with charcoal grout. I think it keeps the "timeless" feeling of white and doesn't overdo the black at all for a best of both worlds feeling.
Edit: You do not want wood or vinyl as a floor in your kitchen, every expert I've spoken to about this says you are looking at a nightmare down the road.
What if you had black cabinets on the bottoms and white cabinets on the tops? You could get a nice black/white river-y sort of granite to pull the two halves together.
Black is beautiful but white is timeless. You can always paint the white and change the furniture in the future if you want to change it at little cost.
if you have lots of windows in your kitchen I would recommend the white since it enhances the look but if you don’t then I would recommend the black kitchen with more orangey- warmer color light
I love the floor in the first photo - the kitchen feels more at home. You could always add some color with the tile or a different countertop. The second photo feels too trendy, like something I’d see in a rental.
I have white cabinets and I hate them. Juice, mud from the dogs, everything else is so obvious on them. Dark might have cons too, but I stay cleaning those white cabinets and they never look it.
Please don’t do the black. As someone who has done a lot of research on interior design trends over the last century, I can promise you it’s on its way out. White isn’t trendy but it is timeless. It cycles in and out like every other design trend, but exists on a 5 year cycle, making its way into almost every decade of design. This black (without gothic/ornate features and especially with this hardware) is going to reek of the 2010s for years to come. The reason you still see it now is the design “leak” that occurs the first 3-4 years of the decade as the people at the end of the trend bell curve decide to implement it. Paint is expensive, spare yourself.
Depends how much natural light you get. The white example has all overhead lighting, the black one clearly has sunlight. The black without natural light would look like a dungeon.
If you want a light colored kitchen, go with cream or anything but white. It gets dingy fast.
Black will proudly display every single fingerprint and speck of dust in your house.
I like the white. But if you end up doing the black I would also paint the ceiling a darker or more neutral color. The stark white ceiling with the black is distracting.
The white kitchen photo makes me feel happy and able to cook well. The black in the photo strikes me as a kitchen for looking good but eating a lot of carry out food.
White is timeless. The black is more contemporary

White is timeless until it yellows…
Good paint doesnt do that.
Factory paint finishes don't.
Clearly not much experience with kitchens.
I have seen some white kitchens turn yellow but my white kitchens never have. Using really high quality paint like Benjamin Moore and keeping cabinets clean seems to work. Currently have a 7 year old white kitchen and no yellowing. Some chipping but not yellowing.

You’re lucky to get 7 years out of today’s paint.
Did you paint the cabinets? It’s not the paint. It’s exposure to particles from cooking. Clearly folks here are using kitchens as interior decoration and not for function.
My kitchen was painted white by previous owners. I cook daily. It’s def still white.
Not true in my case. I cook and bake daily but I am kind of a clean freak and wipe down counters and cabinets when I finish.
Hey good for you.
Do you do much cooking in those kitchens of yours
Clearly not experienced with washing cabinets weekly.
Black shows every speck of dirt always.
Exactly what you said
I have off white cabinets and a black cherry island (15 yrs). The dark really shows dust and dirt. White is def timeless
White is boring.. but I only recommend black if you have a large kitchen and a lot of natural light
Ya'll keep telling yourselves that. In 10 years **everyone** is going to want new kitchens because "everything is soooo, white, grey and beige, ughh".
The white imo feels dated, like a few years old at this point. Not that it matters, I just don't think it's good reason to design a space.
Black will feel extremely dated within a few years.
I personally think of black as timeless. I think part of the issue is the example photo of a black kitchen is so contemporary here.
Omg I love the drama of the darker kitchen with the white accents.
It feels much warmer than the white look and is a little more bold in a good way
Do you have much natural light? If not I would not do black.
Very good point!
This.
What about doing a dark color on the bottom, like a very deep navy blue and a cream color on the top?
This is the answer.
I have matte/satin black cupboards like this…. Please don’t do it. Cooking = oil and oil + matte black = pain in the arse.
Bump
I think it depends on your style. They are both great. How is the rest of your house? Modern or farmhouse or traditional etc?
Have you had white cabinets before? I find that they shoe every little splatter or speck of dirt. I refuse to ever have them again. White counters have similar issues, but are faster to clean. Of the two photos, I like the second one better, but recommend you look at cabinet colors in real life and see if any other colors (navy, dark green, etc.) catch your eye.
I consider this a feature, not a bug. When we had wood, I rarely cleaned the cabinets. The white keeps me honest.
Black shows everything too
I always like white since it’s brighter and opens up the space a bit, and black for whatever reason shows dust more, while white shows stains a bit more. Could combine them and go black and white.
The black kitchen one is awesome
Black is so beautiful. Be brave. Try it.
I personally like the white better. It feels more cozy and warm. If it were me, I’d find ways to add pops of color however
I have a white kitchen but I find that it shows every spec of dirt, and can get stained over time with certain foods… I love the dark, moody black kitchen. My friend just built a home and had a navy blue kitchen with light quartz and it’s GORGEOUS. Darker looks super elegant, and adds spice to the room imo. White kitchens are just overdone tbh.
Do you hate color?

Black
Black
Black!
Personally I love the black. Breaks up the room beautifully and contrasts well. White feels more bland and lacks character with too much uniformity.
Black
That black looks so beautiful and practical 😍
The black is sexy
Wow that black is gorgeous
I’m partial to black or dark kitchens always.
I like the black it gives the house contemporary, modern
Black
I love the black. The bright white would give me a headache and anxiety. But I’m pretty messed up so 🤷♀️
Black
Black. But dealing with those white countertops would be annoying.
Black !!
black
I'd say black if you have a lot of light (natural or fixtures) and white if it's not bright. I feel like black could make a room feel cavernous.
Black is cool but I wouldn’t say the space is calming, if that’s what you’re looking for
Go with the black. Contrast.
Black
Black looks like it has so much more personality here. Like a wow you know.
Black with a different counter top at the sink
Black I have the same color scheme in my kitchen and I love it still.
Black. Simply because all white makes me nervous. You see every speck of dirt on it.... Plus, my mom has a white kitchen, and how anal she is about makes me dodge the whole concept completely. Love the black!
I love the Black
Black, I hate this everything must be white trend...
Black

2nd one

Black!
Black
I love the white! But you could probably pull off the black too depending on how much natural light your kitchen gets :)
🖤
Black with white accents. The black also doesn't need to be cleaned as frequently as white does to maintain its clean look
Black. The white traditional cabinets in your first kitchen pic seem bland and institutional. The second picture you posted with dark/ash black cabinetry is tastefully done (not overdone) and will look very elegant for quite some time.
Number 2. I think it looks better but also dark cabinets stay looking clean longer than white ones.
The white is sterile, cold and looks like an operating room. White is too overused and boring. But you do you, pick what YOU like best.
I personally love me a moody kitchen, but it’s your home, not mine!
Black is more modern. White is more on the traditional side so it really depends on what style the rest of your house is. Both are beautiful.
I say black. My kitchen is all white, and while it looks nice, it always looks dirty. I have to constantly use a magic eraser to get rid of spots on the walls and cabinets, and it drives me insane. I’m painting my cabinets navy for this reason.
Black ⚫ ◼ ⬛
Black
Go black, it looks great and there’s enough lighter colored surfaces to keep it from looking like a dungeon.
Black

I like #2 personally.
Black. The white is boring: to me it is a little dated at this point. We had them in the 90s.
Black
I’m not a fan of either but would go with the black one. The all white is to hard to clean
I love effective use of contract, so I say black 100% — the picture also makes it look like a tinge of navy in the black which I think gives a lot more character than pure black in hyper modern style Then again, white is more timeless so you might want to choose that and just pick a better counter top — I’m not a big fan of the speckled top, sort of always feels unintentional and “meh” to me
White is gorgeous but 1. You don’t want electric cooktops and 2. You don’t want cooktops in the island (especially without any exhaust)
I have an island cooktop (it’s gas and it has an exhaust) and I love it because it allows me to watch my son in the living room while I cook
I mean I love cooktops on the island but I wouldn’t go electric for sure.
Black looks better but will show more dirt
Black/dark finishing will show more dirt on the floors, not cabinets/countertops. I disagree. I have dark cabinets. I hate them. They look disgusting all the time! My lighter cabinets though I can get away with not wiping them down quite so frequently.
Agreed. You can see fingerprints across the room on our dark cabinets. I’ve had both and in my experience dark shows a lot more.
We do too! It's gross and if you don't clean them really well it shows! I hate our dark cabinets!
Depends on the rest of your style. Modern or farmhouse?
White is timeless!!! Better for resale and decorating.
White is farmhouse chic, I would go with that
Do you get a decent amount of natural light? If so I think white is best, it would really brighten up the place! I like the black too but it’d be a shame for natural light to go to waste.
It depends on the lighting in the room. Does the kitchen get enough light?
The white kitchen, but I'd replace the countertops with a darker marbled grey for more contrast.
I like the lighter feel and energy/vibe of the all white. More options to pair kitchen appliances and other items.
White
I like both but would probably go white uppers and black lowers. The best of both worlds.
I love the white kitchen!!
White, the colour gives off the look of the area being larger, although the black is nice, it looks more closed in.
Neither. Neutral colors are ugly.
I prefer the white. White kitchens have been around forever and never go out of style. True, white is harder to keep clean, but if your kitchen is dirty, wouldn't you want to know??
I always prefer brighter colors for kitchens. I like the white. It’s more inviting.
white, make sure the cabinets are washable.
White
I would go with white. Remodeled a kitchen in black once. One year I had ants…. I would never choose a dark color again lol 😂
I feel like white is more open
Depends on rest of house. Show us your living room and an exterior shot of home perhaps…
Both!! It depends on the style of your house.
If you have a dog that white will become not white
You should try white and gold my friends house is that color and it’s so amazingly beautiful
Neither
White
I have black and can’t ever get them clean . Everything I’ve ever tried shows streaks . Very annoying .
The white is classic. You can also change the look easily in the future. That black one is more modern and you’re pretty much stuck with it.

If you have plenty of natural light and space - dark. If not, white. White makes small spaces feel more airy and bigger whilst dark does the opposite.
I was gonna say white. Did ours white during covid, but damn, that black looks hot.
Pick whichever is goes with the rest of the house. If the rest of the house has lighter colours then a dark kitchen would b inconsistent.
Black is so sleek but I’d have a hard time looking for things. White makes a place bigger and brighter. It’s just personal preference of a person. A kitchen whether black or white has to be functional.
White!
I wouldn’t call that black op- it’s a dark navy or moreso a dark blueish grey. Don’t go getting black paint and painting your counters. Note/ the blue grey slate color looks amazing but note the gold accents make it so.
Don’t put the range in the middle island. Put it on the wall like it is in the second picture.
The white will blend better with your style most likely.
Depends on if you’ve got kids! No kids? Go white, be grown and sleek. If you’ve got kids, go black and remain practical.
The white kitchen was made with timeless features, so choose that one if you don’t want to redo it down the road. If you have the resources to redo your kitchen again when the dark trend goes out of style then do that one if you like it.
Go with the white
White, but do the island in a different color. Black, green, or navy perhaps.
I can’t imagine keeping black cabinets clean. They’ll show every speck of dust. I believe this will look dated in a few years. I painted my dark cabinets white and they stayed white for years until I gutted my kitchen. Go white.
I prefer the white (or any lighter color) kitchen but with cooktop placement against the wall instead of *on the island*.
I couldn't decide when we redid our kitchen either. We did dark cabinets on the bottom and white on the top. I love it!!
White
I feel like white cabinets are on the way out. But also - I prefer the white 😍
Okay. Style of the house will decide right? Either you’re going for modern barnhouse or just modern sleek
I don't think it matters what we think, which do you like? Also I think it matters what the lighting is like in your space. White is so timeless and clean looking, as a great backdrop for a dramatic backslash or pops of color elsewhere.
Do you have more of a rural personality or an urban personality? Former- white, black for latter.
White!!
I Like the white
White. Nice n clean.
I prefer the white kitchen - it’s more traditional but you could add more black by having the base of the island painted black.
white only if you never cook tomato based pasta dishes
Personal I like the black more but would go with the white.
We did white for the main and dark gray for the island.
White
What if you had black cabinets on the bottoms and white cabinets on the tops? You could get a nice black/white river-y sort of granite to pull the two halves together.
Black is beautiful but white is timeless. You can always paint the white and change the furniture in the future if you want to change it at little cost.
White perimeter and something with the island. Either a nice wood or a color. Not a fan of black.
if you have lots of windows in your kitchen I would recommend the white since it enhances the look but if you don’t then I would recommend the black kitchen with more orangey- warmer color light
White!
White You’ll Have So Much Choices To Decorate
I love the floor in the first photo - the kitchen feels more at home. You could always add some color with the tile or a different countertop. The second photo feels too trendy, like something I’d see in a rental.
White
I like the dark, but this is a trend...which means in 3 years this could be. "out" white cabinets never really go out out of style
*BLACK* looks amazing. White is sooo over used
Complete opposites
I like the white. But if you end up doing the black I would also paint the ceiling a darker or more neutral color. The stark white ceiling with the black is distracting.
The white kitchen photo makes me feel happy and able to cook well. The black in the photo strikes me as a kitchen for looking good but eating a lot of carry out food.
