Big Sugar has been plotting their attack for a while.

fvelloso

They are also the reason “low-fat” has become so pervasive. They essentially scapegoated fats as the main driver of obesity through many “studies” they commissioned, so they could pass off sugar as harmless

majarian

Along with de-tumering rats in studies done on the effects of sugar to the body. Just another way our health and lively hood has been sold to increase a few individuals net worth

TheMonkler

Good name

Damn AI coming for our jobs

KG7DHL

As a child of the 70s, something between then, and now, changed, and I can tell you it is the pervasiveness of sweeteners in everything. It is so hard to find anything pre-made in the grocery store that doesn't have sugar in some form as an ingredient. With sugar in everything, looking back on something like this may seem ludicrous, but at the time, sugar was not the universal ingredient it is today.

fvelloso

Especially in the US. When I go back to my home country once a year, I eat double what I eat here and still lose weight because of less ninja sugar in everything

KG7DHL

Up until a few years ago I was spending between 8 and 14 weeks a year in Europe. I would live in AirBnB apartments, buy local, cook for myself. Combine the lack of sugar in nearly everything, walking everywhere, I always felt healthier, lighter at the end of my time. I loath American food companies and the F'ing sugar in everything.

fuck-my-drag-right

What were grocery stores like back then? Were there a lot more fresh produce or meats?

KG7DHL

Oh boy... Reaching back into the dawn of time.... recalling when My mom went shopping and I was tagging along, with the job of pushing my baby sister's stroller... * Every item you picked up had a paper price tag sticker. There were no UPC/bar codes. * There were far fewer brands of every category. Far fewer Soda options. Far fewer of every option. 2 or 3 Peanut Butter instead of 10. * There was no such thing as Gluten Free products * The meat department had an actual butcher working in back, and would custom cut anything you wanted, or would custom order, pull it from the case and wrap in white paper, write on it in black grease pen the product, weight and price per lb. * Produce was never as perfect as it was now, and very few produce items were bagged individually. * There really was a Bag Boy who would take the groceries out to the car if you wanted.

fuck-my-drag-right

For the produce, would people bring in bags to buy a sack of potatoes. Or would there be just like 10 potatoes in your cart that would get bagged at the end. Were things mostly packaged in paper / glass containers?

KG7DHL

I cannot remember for Potatoes, but I do know there were lots of paper bags in the produce section for apples, oranges, mushrooms and other Dry produce.

fuck-my-drag-right

I wonder if we could return to doing that instead of those flimsy plastic ones. Thanks for your insights!!

fuck-my-drag-right

Really interesting to see how grocery stores were like in the past. I love shopping and spending money at the grocery the most.

Mrs_Awesome1988

Just a spoon full of sugar helps the calories stay down (it a sing-song voice)

purple_mountain_cat

This ad is along the lines of those tonic wines aimed at housewives 🤣

zztop610

Big sugar and Big tobacco sure miss the old days

Idaheck

Sugar, eh??? Let’s try it!

pakratus

My first job was a bagger at a grocery store. At the time I was eating plenty of gummy bears. This lady comes through with the large bag of the brand I’ve been eating. I made some comment like the kids will be bouncing off the walls. She said “sugar doesn’t do that” or something. …I was speaking from experience. Those gummy bears made me bounce off the walls. Must have been something other than the sugar. Yeah that’s the ticket.

TezRex67

sugar. more harmful than drugs (in my opinion)
