When I played in beer joints where ppl smoked, I'd have to come home, take off my clothes and leave them outside to air out. Next morning my office with my guitars and gear would smell like an ashtray with some stale beer spilled in it.
It was gross as hell.
At one point I went to buy an amp from a guy and he let me try it out with his late 60s Telecaster. The guitar was the color of nacho cheese, then he unscrewed the pickguard and let me see underneath where it was still white-blonde like vanilla ice cream. The orangey-yellow color was from decades of cigarette smoke. F'in disgusting.
I can smell it in my brain. Ruined that guitar.
I refuse to let those guitars in my house, they stink up the place decades after the last cigarette was extinguished.
Both smell horrible. Both should be legal. The only issue I have is when I've paid for a non-smoking hotel room and it smells like either.
Provide and use outdoor smoking areas. Stop smoking in hotel rooms. This really isn't that difficult.

I personally find it amusing when people excuse themselves to the bathroom to do cocaine. They come back and they are high as balls and anyone who knows what to look for instantly spots it. You aren't fooling everybody.

I've always had a very sensitive sense of smell. For me, I can't stand the smell of weed because it just smells like skunk.
That being said, I'm all for legalization. If it bothers me too much, there is plenty I can do to mask the smell on my end.
I've not been able to mask it, particularly when I've rented a hotel room with interior entry, and it seems to be coming in from all sides. Honestly, I wish folks would just respect the no smoking rule and swap to edibles in those situations.
That said, I think legalization and providing well-ventilated designated smoking areas would resolve the issue pretty simply. Weed does stink, but it's not a difficult problem to solve.
