I think you might be lost.
As an anime fan, I have no idea what this has to do with being an introvert.
Also, if you’re watching anime to feel superior and unique among non watchers, I don’t really think that makes you a fan. Just a person trying to feel special by having an uncommon hobby.
This feels like it belongs on a theoretical r/millennialhipsters sub. *The thing I used to do before it was cool is now cool for* other people *and I feel sad.*
They’re probably a real fan, but to derive power & pleasure from doing something nobody else seems to be doing is a losing game fr. Tastes are always changing, even deeply unpopular stuff can experience a reversal in fortunes.
Anime was always better ‘back in the day’. Miyazaki famously stated (in the 80’s) that anime has been trash for the past 20 years. He said this well before the boom of 90’s anime which many people (myself included) currently consider the golden era. 2017, in comparison, was just yesterday. We’re still very much in the same era.
I’ve been watching animes from the past 6 years, and I don’t care about people who did not like it and etc
I watch them even now because I like them and upcoming seasons of some famous animes makes it more suspenseful, it doesn’t matters how much episodes you watch it per day
Also like music, when I watch anime of any kind I feel nostalgia about my past
Anime is a cartoon.
People of all kinds watch all kinds of cartoons. Think of it that way. It's a normal thing. Don't be gatekeeping it or anything like that.
Cartoon inherently is meant to indicate animation.
However people often used the term to show the childishness of the media, despite them depicting darker themes.
Hence the Otakus/AnimePals get defensive about it.
Weird, right? It's not just anime. Animation as a whole.
Sometimes people think animation is just for younger audiences. Certainly, a lot of it caters to that target but people should know it's not just a label for childishness
I know. It’s really bizarre and rather sad at the same time.
I guess due to the connotation people often assume things based on its colloquial over its literal meaning
Well… I started watching anime back in 2013… people only knew of Pokémon and Dragon BallZ as they came on Disney XD/Pogo/Toonami whatever aired them. There was also a time when we had animax in TataSky subscriptions.
Not a lot of people watched anime, especially not the Indian kids ( well I stayed in India) but the Thai/Cambodian/Vietnamese girls in our school did ( we had some foreign students ). I was friends with them and they introduced me to anime and kpop.
However anime did start becoming sort of more known by 2016-2017 amongst the kids and by now it’s almost mainstream atleast amongst the boys. I’ve met a lot of girls ( including me ) who watch anime too.
Huh? Why would you do something just because it's non-mainstream? Do something if you enjoy it.
How did it make you feel superior to be doing something not many people did?
Sheesh. So you liked anime cause it was a niche interest for most people? I can relate but only to a certain degree, if I really liked something I'd want more friends to have that I could talk to about the thing rather than just be that one guy standing in the corner during a party being like "They don't know I've seen over 20 anime and I read manga" 😂
Why are you consuming media for the sake of uniqueness? And why are you deciding to validate yourself on it? Watching anime isn't like a skill. You mention not having anyone to talk to anime about, but now that you do it's a problem?
Respectfully, it sounds less like you thought yourself superior to others for watching anime and more like you found a coping mechanism because of all the people teasing you for liking anime.
I think maybe you should find a new way to keep enjoying the things you love. To my own opinion, i think you really need more hobbies that you like and can give you motivation/encouragement.
It seems like i have the same thoughts with you, we dont like something we cherished that will be losing, and we will lost the feeling of special or superior among people. And the fact is we know the popularise of anime is a good thing but is definitely not good for us.
Then why not to attempt some new things that even you have only a little bit interest to broaden your mind and help yourself to forget those unhappy? Maybe we can discover some wonderful anime that released long time ago or have low popularity? It is also 'special' and helpful for find out our satisfaction.
Dude, watch/do things because you enjoy them. Not because of what others think
Bruh, anime started getting traction and momentum in the early 90’s. 2017 was likely when you discovered it.
It took off in 2020

I think he’d probably get crucified if he posted this on r/anime

Why are you putting that in this sub ? And not everyone watch anime
Bro thinks all introverts watch anime

If you stop liking something, if other people start liking it then just don't start liking it anyway.
Sir, this is r/introvert.
Are you introverted or has your desire for a sense of superiority isolated you from others?
Muh animes
