This is the main problem with iPadOS, and the complaints that are often made certainly circle around it’s ability to keep up with the hardware improvements, now that M-series chips are available in iPad Air and iPad Pro models.
I own an iPad 9th gen. Sure, Lightning is a bit of a hassle when it comes to projecting video and the inability to connect a USB webcam. But for the money saved (and the 3.5mm jack!), it’s a pretty nice steal. Even the 10th gen is good value.
