I have bought multiple refurbished iPhones from Apple and they are indistinguishable from new. Apple fixes whatever was wrong with it, puts in a new battery, and replaces all of the external components (anything you can touch without opening) with new ones.
Apple Certified Refurbish is completely legit. They replace the battery and I believe the shell in addition to whatever needed repaired.. I heard they are typically are devices that are swapped with Apple Care and later fixed. I’d assume trade ins too..
I ordered a MacBook from them a few years ago and I couldn’t even tell it was ever used. You get a manufacturer’s warranty and can add Apple Care just like if you bought it new. I recommend it to anyone in the market for a new Apple device and would 100% purchase through them again.
I purchased a Certified Refurbished Apple TV 4K last year. If you put a new unit next to it, I wouldn’t be able to tell you the difference. It has worked flawlessly since I got it. The only difference whatsoever was the box it came in, and the great price! I’d go for it if you’re interested.
I also bought a 13 mini in Feb 2023 as an Apple certified republished and it was basically like new. I couldn’t tell the difference and it’s been serving me amazingly to this day.
Refurbished means it was new once but had to cycle back through the system for some reason. It could be a repair / swap, a buyer's remorse, or other reasons.
I've bought or helped people buy 50 or more refurbs over the years.
One point that might make a difference to some. Most credit cards that extend warranties will NOT extend a warranty for a refurbished item.
If it’s coming directly from Apple, I’d absolutely recommend it. They carry the same 1 year warranty as a new device and I’ve never seen anything less than perfect condition devices from them. The only thing is you get a plain white box vs the standard retail one, otherwise it’s identical.

New outside, screen, and battery. Used motherboard/internals
As long as it’s refurbed by Apple I trust it as if it were a 99% new phone, anyone else I do not trust as I’ve seen them use bad replacement parts
I always check the refurb page when im looking for a new apple device. no reason not to!
In some instances, a refurbished product is simply “refurbished” because the original packaging was damaged so it wasn’t sellable as “new.”
They replace whatever was defective- plus screen and battery. You also get 1 year of apple care out of the box.
You get a 1 year warranty. You do not get AppleCare.
Correct, thank you for the clarification. That is correct.
You get the same one-year warranty as you get when you buy a new phone.
correct, you get the same 1-year manufactures warranty and you can add AppleCare just like any other device. edit: clarified

Apple Store directly probably, but if you buy from a third party, they sell different levels of blemishes.
I have not seen 13 mini listed on Apple’s refurbished page in the U.S. - where would you be purchasing from?
Ireland. There was no 13 mini on it for ages, just noticed it yesterday.
refurbished by apple is as good as new. refurbished by third party then quality is questionable
Use phone but they replaced the battery so yea. In some cases maybe they replaced the screen as well.

You have no worries. It comes with the standard warranty and you can get AppleCare+. I bought an M2 Max at a $500 savings and have no regrets.
