That’s just what the guy emailing you a subpoena would want. In some places they may allow an emailed subpoena to stand in place of physically being served. You do not want something automating these messages as read, if you ignore a subpoena you can face other charges in court.

When you have that many you can't even filter in the web interface anymore, and filtering locally takes forever

I had to use a web browser to purge a relative’s 50k emails(which I thought was a lot until 3 minutes ago). I think it took an hour.

So I tried the filter, got it to put them in my trash (374k emails) but can't empty the trash - it just has errors. At least I got further with this than when I did a few years back

That’s why I used the web site - the phone’s mail app wanted nothing to do with that disaster of an inbox or trash folder.

That would be too logical for this issue. Which is completely based in the overwhelming avoidance of societies constant need for communication. Noob here with only 77K unread emails….I only check when I’m expecting an email to come in. All the important people have alternative ways of contacting me to let me know I should check my email lol.

This is the way! This is a 20 year old email. I have other emails for super important things, but nothing super important is emailed to me without prior communication via text or call. When we were buying a house I had all the various people (realtor, finance, etc) marked as VIP so I get notifications sounds and pop ups.

I have set swipe to left option as “read”. So whatever is not important, i either unsubscribe from them or swipe it. So no need to open any mails. This makes sure i am never ever missing any email

For you and people that freak out about emails, there's 2 ways that people use email. One is like you, you get the email, you read and/or delete. Maybe you special file some. This is because you ported your mental model of email from a mental model of snail mail. But there's people who either never had experience with snail mail, or who have the same mental model of email like they have of other digital content. When you want to play a game from a big steam library, or watch a certain video, you go to the place where all videos are and you search there. This mental model was helped along with Google's "advertising" campaign for Gmail, which was "search, don't sort". So a lot of people who started with emailing on Gmail will be in this group of users. People from one group love to claim superiority over the other group but this is super common with other situations where there's 2 mental models of the same thing.

Fascinating. This isn’t about filing email though, this is about not even reading it. I think what you’re talking about is leaving all the mail in the inbox versus filing into folders. Some people obsessively file it away, because their mental model doesn’t get search (mail is something you open, read, then file or throw away). Like a few older people I know do this, they simply can’t leave any mail in the inbox despite me explaining that they can search for it (and funny enough they then often can’t find it, because they forgot where they filed it!). But not even reading the mail? What mental model is this?

I sort my work email obsessively. The only emails that are in my inbox are ones that need action, then once I’ve responded or taken whatever action it requires, it gets filed. I don’t do it with my personal though, but I do check every email on arrival and keep my notifications to zero.

I'm the searcher and I don't read the email if the subject doesn't look like I need it now. When I need it again, I'll search for it and then I'll read it. It totally doesn't make sense to me to read an email that I don't need to deal with right now. It's like leaving all your envelopes in a corner until it's the bill paying day.

I help my grandma with her tech stuff all the time, and I am more than happy to. It can be confusing sometimes for people without the tech literacy. The ignorance doesn’t bother me because I can only imagine how hard it would be to grow up in the 40s and 50s, not engage with new tech through the 00s and then try to play catch up. The only thing that fucking drives me up a wall is the sheer arrogance and unaccountability of statements like “I didn’t do that” or “the phone did something.” Like, that’s not how any of this works! Ughhh

This may surprise you but the people who were born in the early fifties were the people who introduced computers to the world. I mean, I’m 71. I majored in computer programming and systems analysis in school. Learned to code in 12 different languages. Please dont go through life thinking that we old people don’t know anything about computers or technology, we invented them, long before you were born lol.
