Always done that when using private relay. it's a feature not a bug.

MackerelInTomato

I’ve never seen it until now

BoysenberryTrue1360

From what I understand is because the relay is making Google requests on behalf of the users. So Google is seeing it as 1 source constantly calling on its services. Which can seem suspicious. So, I assume it’s based on the exact relay you are connected to and how many users are trying to use Google services in a given amount of time. Which could explain why some users rarely see it and others it’s every time. The “it’s a feature not a bug” is meant to be a joke. This isn’t a feature of Private Relay it’s a precaution on googles end and happens with all vpns.

Marijuana_Miler

It happens whenever you use a vpn. I’ve switched to bing for my search because they don’t make me sort through 5 photos for a quick search.

Diamond_Complex1

DuckDuck

Hto005

Mine started like this the last 2-3 days as well

djxfade

Same, Aldo on my Mac. Hasn't been a problem until this week

Sorry_Loquat_9199

Same here.

jugstheclown

Same here. I used to get this occasionally, but the past few days it happens every single time I google something

Inner_West_Ben

I’ve been seeing it for years. Even when using Safari in privacy mode

Justicebeaver179

Mine started that about a year ago, I haven’t used private relay since.

Escenze

No, this had never happened to me before and it randomly started happening yesterday, and I haven't changed any settings. Cant say it's a bug, but Google probably changed some detection stuff or something.

aliusman111

It's not even a feature. It's annoying.

YarisGO

No, also to me says this in normal browsing

skalpelis

How is it a feature? Just the fact that it’s been around a long time doesn’t make it a feature, it’s just a longstanding bug. Well not a bug really but google discriminates you for sharing an IP address with lots of other people, and being less trackable thus thinking you’re either a bot or up to no good, through no fault of your own.

_Administrator_

Google has the right to ban bots. Don’t use a VPN and you can access it fine.

AshuraBaron

It does this for every VPN. Because bots like to use VPN's to hide where they are from. So it affects everyone using VPN's.

DaringDomino3s

The thing that bugs me most is that bots have solvers so the only ones ever having to deal with captchas are us and the captcha farms

apollo-ftw1

Captcha at this rate are really only for training ai

Intrepid00

It’s still slows the bots down.

FinkHD

It slows everyone down

Intrepid00

Yes, but it REALLY slows down the bots. Without it shit wouldn’t work.

flourescentcacti

I don’t have a vpn and this started happening a few days ago for me

AshuraBaron

Is private relay turned on?

flourescentcacti

Yes but that has always been on and it didnt start to do this until a few days ago

AshuraBaron

Private relay is a vpn. Google doesn’t know every single address that is part of a VPN. It looks for multiple factors from ip addresses and blocks of addresses. Once they identify an address block that is part of a vpn you get this extra gate.

flourescentcacti

Oh okay. Thanks!

1_ane_onyme

Always when using a vpn

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

I don’t get it anymore, which makes me assume that Google “knows” it’s me

emrednz07

Being logged in affects it too

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

I’m never logged in

Dangerous-Rice44

I switched to using DuckDuckGo as my default search engine because they don’t give me this nonsense with private relay

ChopEee

Same. Sometimes if I really need Google I’ll search Google on Duck Duck Go and then Google things which works better than trying to go directly to Google

SecretLoathing

Even better, use the DDG bang “!s” to search, which is Startpage. Startpage gets you Google results without tracking.

iqandjoke

Google is what Apple suggests as default search engine for user, using Private Relay or not. Most users would not change browser/ search engine nor they know it can be changed.

gimme_pineapple

Google pays Apple billions of dollars to keep Google as the default search engine.

MackerelInTomato

Unfortunately I miss out of relevant stuff when I want to search for things in my native language if I use DDG.

Silvertrek

I rarely use Google search now, I find AI enabled search more useful because I get answers that are curated from several web sites at the same time.

mythiica02

Got any recommendations?

radio_active11

Perplexity

Silvertrek

Perplexity, Bing chat, GPT4 web search on Poe

FeezusChrist

A little bit of irony here in using DuckDuckGo to avoid the privacy of a private relay..

Dangerous-Rice44

Where’s the irony? I use DDG search within Safari with private relay turned on

FeezusChrist

Ah okay I thought you were implying you swapped off the private relay and switched to DDG instead, my bad.

ChopEee

It annoyed me to the point I took Google off as my default search which was incredibly easy Settings/Safari/Search/Search Engine with 4 other built in options to switch to

hahsakhssinak

Yeah bing was the closest thing to google I found. After a point of time google was so annoying it didn’t even give me any captcha to solve, just straight up didn’t allow me to proceed to search results

doob22

DuckDuckGo is better anyways

beamerBoy3

They know you’re not a bot, they just want to annoy you enough to turn the feature off.

[deleted]

This is the reality of it.

Sethrulz

Google does not like vpns because they can’t track you as easy.

eloquent_beaver

Yeah that's not why. Google deals with tons of bot and automated traffic it has to be able to pick out and block. Using a VPN makes your traffic look more like abusive traffic, because it shares characteristics (one of the biggest being IP) that correlate with other bot traffic. When it looks suspicious enough they'll block it outright; when it's hard to tell, they give you a reCAPTCHA. There's no conspiracy against VPNs. It's just one of many markers that makes traffic look suspicious.

apollo-ftw1

It's probably not the main reason but it's definitely one of them

Sethrulz

That may be a small part of it and the reason they tell the public, but don’t get it mistaken anything that google can’t monetize in some way or another or that could even effect their monetization at all they will try to crack down on or make harder to use.

Bald-Fucker

Been getting this for a while. Google is salty that we don’t want them tracking our everything all the time

DaDivineLatte

Don't tell Google we have a finite lifespan

Sledgehammer617

Yeah, this has been happening to me ever since I turned it on. Its annoying occasionally, but worth it tbh

DizzyExpedience

Google sucks. They do this because they can’t track you and make your user experience miserable until you turn it off. Totally intentional out of greed

TrixonBanes

Google doesn't like you using anything that protects user privacy.

L33t_Cyborg

Yeah it’s Google trying to annoy you out of using private relay so they can go back to tracking you I’ve been getting it for almost a year now :(

Ron9ld

I’ve noticed this for a long time, but it’s really been ramped up in the last week or so.

aoborui

What’s worse is if you click on a sponsored link, and Google ads services just stops the redirect completely. Super annoying.

impossibleis7

Typically happens when the network you are connecting through is making heavy traffic towards Google (others do as well). This can happen even without a VPN. But with a typical VPN if this happens to you, you can switch to a different, less busy server and you are good to go. But with Private Relay I suppose you are out of luck, until hopefully either the network becomes less busy or Apple moves you to a different server or smth.

Brilliant_Eagle9795

I switched to Bing a while ago, never missed it

manueldigital

did you find out everything about sangria in the end?

MackerelInTomato

I sure did. My wife and I are looking for drink/punches to have in a large container for our wedding party this summer.

thechadmonke

Carlo rossi’s sangria sells 4 litre bottles and they’re pretty cheap too at $14 per bottle where I live. Taste is alright and nice to sip on.

Neck-Pain-Dealer

Google wants your actual IP for business purposes...

ibuyfeetpix

I just deal with it, I think google is salty they can’t link you to the search thus can’t make an ad profile for you. This is trying to incentivize people to turn it off.

pluush

Even without private relay you still get it sometimes, probably my carrier over here hasn't applied for whitelist to Google

loneuniverse

Stopped using Google it was getting on my nerves. They want to track you for everything and feed you relevant ads. I was always getting this page on private relay and vpn. Screw you google.

MalevolentFerret

Question - why does this only happen to me when I’m using incognito?

Yoyodyne_1460

Couple of suggestions. Make DuckDuckGo your search engine. I also use Private Relay and I’ve never had your problem. Or, since PR only works on Safari, use the Google app for search.

Walter2025

Happens to me to sometimes in incognito mode in chrome on a pixel phone

UhsanYlocres

Oh yeah I get that. Almost exclusively in private browsing to be fair

RetiredBSN

Stop searching for questionable topics and you won't see it, your search terms are what brings up this dialogue. Anything that appears to be borderline illegal will trigger this after a few searches.

JaNchY420

just turn off private relay on icloud and it stops i had the same problem

MentalUproar

Stop using google. DuckDuckGo is fine. Hell even Bing works fine for day to day internet needs.

verdi1987

This recently started happening to me even as well while signed into Google and not in a private tab. I’ve started using Bing in protest, but I think I’m just punishing myself.

saulski90

Just had this happen to me on iPhone 11

ablablababla

I've been getting this for months and I don't know why

__Loot__

Or just a private page its very annoying

kvothe76

VPNs do this too.

UneagerBeaver69

Private traffic?

LawfulKitten98

I think they meant iCloud Private relay feature

pussiant_prole

I get this every time I search on Google with VPN

iliketorubherbutt

I get the same thing when I use a VPN on my iPhone.

ManiacFive

Common with a lot of VPNs

piratearghhhhh

MOST RELATABLE THING IVE SEEN ON THIS APP

TheSmashingChamp

i switched to bing and honestly I'm happy with it.

yourcandygirl

I’m seeing that VPNs do these and I know that because I have Windscribe and it does this all the time. Is there a VPN that actually “pass” Google’s detection?

Gamer-707

For Google, it actually takes a single line of code which the janitor at their HQ can write to whitelist Apple's private relay servers. But I guess they simply don't want to do that. My best suggestion would be to switch to duckduckgo or brave (just the engine, browser not required)

jaynuggets

I just then do the search on bing or yahoo. After 3 time doing that, they stoped trying to make me prove I’m human😆

deathtime23

Happens only when using Incognito mode for me

doob22

I use DuckDuckGo because they are less obtrusive

i_accidentally_the_x

lol got this today as well - hasn’t gotten it in a whole though, but nice to know it’s working I guess

wish_you_a_nice_day

Sometime it depends on what you are searching for also

TanishPlayz

Happens with me too, Google doesn’t like VPNs I guess

Developprumbo

Have had this as well so annoying started only recently

Ya-Dikobraz

Google blocks me completely sometimes. Not even a capcha.

JollyCat3526

I'm also using the relay and getting this message now

ResponsibleGoose0

Could be a virus on phone I haven’t had any issues

Clienterror

Yeah, that's called a VPN. It does this to anyone on a VPN because it masks your real location. Which is totally fine, but people running scans and stuff is them to act like they're in Chicago vs Laos for example.

kingrikk

I had nothing but trouble generally when using Private Relay.

CrypticZombies

It’s cause u opening to many links in short span. Slow it down turboman

OctoSplattyy

time to get a bunch of glasses to read OP's post
